Can't add iChat to Dock

When I drag the iChat icon from the Applications folder in a finder window to the dock, it will stay there for a few seconds and then disappear.
I deleted the dock preferences file from my Library/Preferences folder but that didn't fix the problem. I can add and remove other apps - Skype, for one - but iChat does not want to stick.
Any ideas?

HI,
If you have not done so already create a New Mac User account (System Preferences > Accounts)
Log in to this accopunt and try iChat there (Without creating Spaces)
Does iChat stay in the DOCK then ?
IF that is the case then we will know that it is something about the Preferences for original Account.
Return to the Original Account
Use the Finder's Go Menu > Go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Preferences
Find com.apple.ichat.plist This hold the windowing info for iChat (Amongst other things)
Drag it to the Trash and restart iChat.

Can't add volume to dock

Hello
We have one workstation that will not let us add a volume to the dock. We can add documents and applications but not a volume. The volume is on our network and is able to be mounted. It also is available in all other workstations docks.
Any ideas why we can't add it to the dock this particular Mac?

Are you adding it to the portion of the dock where the Trash is located? There is a divider in the dock that you may not have noticed. Apps and docs go to the left (if the dock is at the bottom of your screen), and drives/volumes go to the right.
Give that a shot.

Can't add iChat agent password to keychain...

Here's one for you veteran iChatters...Is there some reason why I must type in the password for iChat agent each and every time I reboot? I've tried adding it manually to the keychain, but it still pops up with that annoying dialog at startup. It's the only app that does this now.
And is anyone else having problems connecting to iChatters who are still using the Panther version or those who are using AIM screenname? Since I've upgraded to Tiger, I've had no problem connecting to other Tiger users, but nothing but problems with Panther/AIM users. Kind of frustrating, since I had no problems at all before upgrading to Tiger.

The ichat dialog message requesting the password for ichat agent comes up whenever I reboot and then start up ichat. As I just did after installing the latest security update. It is the only app that doesn't offer a "store in keychain" option and I can't add it manually to the keychain. Arrgghh!
And yes, I am running 1.4.2. Haven't updated the popup choice for awhile, I guess.
Just also found out that the person I'm having the most problems with is running 10.2.8 and ichat 2.0 on an ibook G3. Guess he'll just have to bit the bullet and upgrade to Tiger.

When accessing iChat for the first time to set up an account, clicking on the iChat icon from either finder-applications, or from the dock, iChat will not open and take me to the account set up to create a new account. Suggestions?

If you go to Applications and click iChat once to highlight can you then do a Get Info ?
Apple/CMD ( or ⌘) and the i key together.
This will bring up the Info panel
Which version of iChat does it say it is ?
At OS X 10.7.3 it should be version 6.0.1
If this is OK then close the panel
Go to the Finder > Go Menu and hold th ALT key down - then Select Library from the list.
Open the Preferences folder.
Find com.apple.ichat.plist and com.apple.ichatAgent.plist plus th ones with AIM and Jabber in the File names.
Drag them all to the Trash
Restart iChat.
If iChat is NOT at version 6.0.1 then download and reinstall the COMBO version of the OS X 10.7.3 Update over what you have. (this should Update iChat)

How can I get IChat contacts on my IMessage?

Hi, so I just got my new mac and I was very excited to start Ichatting. However, Ichat has been replaced by Imessage. I have a few questions regarding this. Is there a way for me to unistall imessage and get Ichat instead? If not, then how can I add IChat contacts to my Imessage. My sister is at university and she has IChat and I have IMessage and it wont let me message her because it says she is not signed up for IMessage. How can I make my Imessages connect to her Ichat?

As Niel said, if it's a first generation iPad, you cannot update it past iOS 5.1.1.

Can not add items to the dock

I can not add icons to the dock, I am able SOMETIMES to edit the dock (moving icons around or delete them), there is no rule, sometimes I can grab the icon on the dock, and sometimes I just can't (I have the pop up when I can't) , I deleted users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and issued a killall dock command, with no difference.
any help will be appreciated

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Dock did not return to default on that command?
Try again and also delete username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
If it's still no-go create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the Dock in this new account, if it works the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
Let us know.
EDIT: Also are you running any enhancement software?

Hi Wagnerian, Welcome to Apple Discusswions.
When adding files or folders to the Dock, they must go to the right side of the hairline (the same side that Trash is on).
If this what you are doing and it still doesn't work navigate to /Users/YourHome/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and delete that file. then log out and back in or restart. (You'll have to reset your Dock the way you like it)

Adobe applications can't add to the application dock (Apple OS X Mav)

I try to dock Adobe applications on Apple OS X Maverics.
I can only add Adobe applications shortcuts to the right side but not to the applications side. I can move other ones and add other applications.

NOT glad to see that this is still a problem under OS X 10.9.5 - I assume this continues to exist in Yosemite. It's great to see new features, but come on, how about some functional stability? I still occasionally lose the ability to toggle to hand tool with my spacebar.

Can't add facebook homepage to dock

Is there something special you have to do to add websites to the dock?
I can't add facebook to my wife's dock. I even set her account to be an administrator but it still won't let me add facebook.

What procedure are you using to do this?
With referene to SIg's comment, if you are managing to add an application, those go on the other side of the line from where you should be trying to add documents or non-applications. look for that vertical line because it is pretty faint but is critical to where you can put what.

Most of the JABBER Server (clients), have more IM client compatibility. Meaning,
the way it was explained (that link), so just like you add a msn adress you can also add a Yahoo nickn.
Youd should search for a Jabber server that handle a yahoo protocol connection too. If so, you can add yahoo too..
anything else or help just add me on iChat.

Can't add or remove programs from dock

I suddenly have a problem where I can't add or remove programs from the dock. When I try to drag a program icon to the dock it won't stick to it and shows a "+" next to it in green. When I try to drag an icon off the dock it shows a shadow of the icon that won't go away. I tried making a new user and the same behavior occurs in that user. I tried finding my com.apple.dock.plist but couldn't locate it. I was able to find com.apple.dockfixup.plist and tried deleting that but it didn't help. Any recommendations on where to go next?

Thanks, I will try this when I get home today. However, the fact that the problem was not corrected when I made a new user makes me think that deleting this file from my user Library folder may not correct the problem. Any other suggestions if deleting the dock.plist file doesn't work?

Can I add my MSN contacts to iChat using my .Mac account?

I was wondering if there is anyway to add my MSN contacts on to iChat using my Mac account. I know that it is possible using a Jabber account and using my MSN account on iChat, but since I am paying for a .Mac account I might as well maximize its capabilties.

You can not add MSN Buddies to the AIm Buddy List.
You can however create a Jabber ID and then with a Third Party App link to what is called a Transport that will connect you to the MSN Service for Text Only chats.

Thank you rk. The usefulness of image capture had somehow pased me by. To answer my own second question in case anyone needs to know, to put your printer in the dock you open printer & scanner in preferences, highlight your printer and drag its icon to the dock (in chains if necesary!)

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
iCloud is not an application, so it does not appear on the Dock or Applications folder. Instead, you can manage iCloud settings in System Preferences > iCloud.
iCloud only appears as an application in Windows because of iCloud Control Panel

You can use iChat to Video to PCs that are using the AIM for PC app or have the Trillian App with the Pro Add-on (which costs).
As you list OS 10.7.4 you may find you can find a copy of the Messages Beta (technically it was withdrawn before the release date for Mountain Lion that has the Full version)
