Can't add printers.

I'm running Mavericks on a mid-2010 MacBook Pro. Up until I upgraded, I was able to access my ImageRunner iRC3220 and HP 4MP Laserjet printers on my wired network. After the OS upgrade, the printers remained idle and unresponsive in the utility. I reset the printers in the System Preferences, and I added them with no problem…
HOWEVER, after a day, I had the idle problem again, and when I reset the printers again, I tried to add my network printers and each time I got a message saying “Unable to download the software from the server at this time” for all printers.
I'm at a dead stop, so how do I access them and keep them stable?

I also tried downloading the newest driver from Canon, and wound up with a "CNRC322X1.PPD.gz". Is this correct and where the heck do I put it? I followed the path System>Library>Frameworks> but there's no Application Serivces and that's where I got lost.

    3. If you are on a 64-Bit machine, browse to the "Windows x64" sub-key (else "Windows NT x86")
    4. Under the "Print Processors" sub-key DELETE ALL THE SUB-KEYS EXCEPT "winprint" key

    6. Test to see if you can Add a printer.

  • Lock "Print & Fax" Sys Preference user can still add printers, why?

lock "Print & Fax" Sys Preference user can still add printers, why?

I should add that, I click the lock icon and it shows locked, but the + sign to add a printer is not greyed out and still allows printer drivers to be installed.  It then allows the printer driver to be deleted.  I have tried quiting System Preferences and rebooting the system and still have the same results.

  • Printers gone, can't add printers, making PDFs

Suddenly all my printers and Adobe Distiller are gone from my (in-application) print dialogues. !! Truly this happened suddenly, with no apparent cause. I did nothing unusual. No new software, no deletions. Did recent update to 10.4.7.....
And no printers show up in Printer Utility, and i can't make them appear. When i try to create default, i see an error: 'server-error-server-unavailable'.
I can still make PDFs from within an application (like Finale), but nothing shows in the Printer field. It says only 'No Printer Selected', and there is no printer to select.
I have already reset the printing system a few times.
    Restarted the powerbook several times.
I tried deleting all relevant prefs - com.apple.printer etc, distiller, acrobat.....
I have Acrobat 7.0.8 and Distiller 7.0.7, but normally it works ok to use the 'Create PDF' in any print window.
What causes this? Where did all my printers go?
    Has anyone else experienced this?
Incidentally, i have also had a billion problems with fonts. I am trying to print a book of music created in Finale. Within that app i open the print window, create PDF, then collect PDFs together in Acrobat to make the book. I found that changing anything in Acrobat would make certain fonts bold. !! Tried 20 different thing then found that if i opened each PDF in Preview and saved it AGAIN as a PDF, the problem would go away.
So now i want to try using Distiller to create the PDFS, to see if i can skip the step of using Preview.
Thanks for any help, comments, whatever,
    Mark

    update:
I am able to create PDFs as i said above, using the normal mac 'save as PDF' choice in the print dialogue. And i can print normally.
But i still cannot print to distiller. That is, if i choose 'adobe PDF' as the printer, the (in-app) print window goes through the normal motions, but nothing ever shows in the Adobe printer, and no file ever results.
I have tried (not in chronological order):
    deleting prefs
    updating distiller
    updating printer drivers
reset print system, re-add printers incl. adobe PDF
    repairing disk perms
    updated cupsd.conf
    i am about to:
    re-update from standalone installer.
I do think that my problems were the direct result of updating to 10.4.7.
Thanks for the tip about fonts btw. I did go through and found several surprisingly bad fonts, i mean like Schoolbook and, i forget, i think Arial and common, Apple-supplied fonts, that you'd think would just never go bad. huh. I used these in the files in Finale, and maybe that was the problem. They are done, it was a lot of work and now i am unwilling to go back and change fonts, thus restaring the whole finale->PDF->PDF again->collect-all-PDFs-together-in-one-huge-file->number pages (which is where the problems with fonts would show up, fairly late in the process) etc etc.
There are several other threads in this section of this forum, which deal with this same (more or less) problem. I am sorry, don't have time to get the refs right now.
i will keep trying, and keep posting here.

  • Can't add printers while in WiFi/Airport

I can no longer add printers in Printer Setup Utility while using my WiFi network (AEBS). The <ADD> Button is GRAYED OUT.
Everything is OK when my printer is connected via USB, but in Airport nothing.
When I get the ADD page it shows the correct name of the printer and the correct Location (AEBS) Name. But, the <ADD> Button is GRAYED OUT.
    The printer's connection is Bonjour.
I'm not sure whether this started after the AirPort Firmware update 5.6 or the SecUpd2005-007 and SecUpd2005-007Ti.
But AirPort printing did start getting sporadic after SecUpd2005-007 and SecUpd200.5-007Ti.
I did a Reset Printing System when the printer would only print when it felt like it. Still everything was fine until 08-15-05.
I installed the AirPort Firmware update 5.6, the SecUpd2005-007 and the SecUpd200.5-007Ti the same day they appeared.

  • Can't add printers with Leopard in iMac G5

I upgraded to Leopard several months ago and noticed that coincidentally my printer (HP PSC 1610 All-in-one) no longer appeared in my list of printers. I've limped along without a printer for a few months now and just purchased a new one (Canon PIXMA MX310). Now I can't seem to add this printer either. There are no printers listed in the pull down when I print from any app. When I go to preferences to add a printer. The Canon is listed in the list of available printers but when I select it a "Searching for new Drivers" message appears with a spinning wheel but it never finds any drivers. I installed (and reinstalled) the drivers but Leopard can't find them. Any Help? I have an iMac G5 running OS X 10.5.5. Both printers are multifunction (Print/Scan/Fax).

I encountered the same problem trying to install and add a new Epson printer on my dual G5. The printer appears in the list but the "searching for new drivers" never completes. The same installation went without a hitch on my MacBookPro and my iMac (all three machines are running 10.5.5).

  • Can't add Printers in Mavericks, and a possible solution

I came here looking for an answer to this problem, and then was able to fix it, so I thought I would share it for others. I have a Lexmark X6600 all-in-one. It's maybe 3 or 4 years old. Still works great.
With the various OS updates since I got it, and new printer drivers, everything worked fine, except I could no longer print wirelessly. That wasn't a problem however because my printer was close enough to my iMac that I would plug in a USB cable. My son's MacBook Pro could print wirelessly because he was still running the older drivers, so the new drivers must have been an issue. I updated to Mavericks from Mountain Lion the day it was released. The printer and scanner worked fine.
Mavericks ran great at first, but then started getting slow, with lots of spinning beachballs, and things like the Finder crashing and becoming unresponsive, etc. Even though Activity Monitor would show 70% idle time on the CPU, clicking on things like the menu bar would cause more spinning or just wouldn't do anything. The Finder would take over 5 minutes to draw the contents of a window. I also could not shut down or restart. So I decided to do a fresh backup (I use Carbon Copy Cloner), and wipe the hard drive, and do a fresh install of Mavericks. The contents of my hard drive had been migrated through several computers, going all the way back to a G4 Digital Audio, so I'm sure there was lots of junk.
So I did that last night, and then restored from the backup. The Mac runs so much better now. However, I had no printer listed in Printers & Scanners, and clicking on the Add Printer button would pull up a blank window. So I downloaded the latest printer drivers from Apple/Lexmark, and installed them. Still no luck. When looking in the Lexmark folder in /Library/Printers, the driver was missing, and it only had some of the other files that were in my backup. So I tried copying them over, and repaired permissions, and still no luck. I went back to the driver version before that, and still nothing.
Finally, remembering that my son's MacBook could print (He's still running Lion), I downloaded the drivers for 10.6. This driver is known as 6600SeriesWebInstaller1.1.0.  Not only did this fix it, but it allowed me to print wirelessly! Scanning through Image Capture is broken, but the included Lexmark 5600-6600 Series Center app scans just fine. So there seems to be an issue with the newer printer software. It wont even install properly. So, for those having problems with printers, and reinstalling the newer drivers, try one of the older ones.

    Hi samuelfromkenosha!
I have an article here for you that can help you troubleshoot this issue. First, assuming your Wi-Fi connection is working properly, you may need to try restoring your Apple TV:

  • Open Directory Users can't add printers

    Hi all,
I've set up my teachers on OD on OS X Server 10.5 but now when they log in, they cannot add any printers. I've tried many different things to get the lock on the Print & Fax System Pref to be unlocked by default but nothing I've tried works.
When I log into the computer as an admin, the Print & Fax is unlocked. Logging in as a user via OD locks it. I've checked to make sure that the users are not being managed via OD prefs. Even if they are the lock still appears. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?
    thanks!

Ah! Thanks! No wonder I cannot do this...
Unfortunately, the printers are all USB shared printers connected to computers on the network. Is there anyway to preset these printers? They don't show up in the Print manage settings at all.

  • Still can't add printers in 10.4.7

I've tried everything suggested in discussions including resetting printer system, fixing permissions and downloading & installing CUPS 1.2.2 but still same error adding printers.
Both printers work fine over same network from Powerbook G3 running OS 9.2
Should I reset printing & permissions after installing CUPS 1.2.2?
I re-downloaded & installed 10.4.7 again but still same problem. Should I reinstall CUPS 1.2.2 (latest version on their site, or should I use 1.2.1?) and do I need to reset printing system & repair permisions again? In what order do I do these?
    What next?
    Help please, I'm desparate!
PowerMac G4 867 Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   HP 5MP, ethernet & ansante bridge to 5 MP. USB Epson Stylus Photo 1200

    Hi Paul
The 5MP is connected to the G4 and G3 via an Ansante Bridge and ethernet hub. The Epson S P 1200 is conected to the G4 by USB (powered hub) and to the G3 by serial cable. All was working well from either computer to either printer til recently ( I think when I updated to 10.4.6)
The printers disappeared from the list and when I try to add either printer I get "An error has arisen whilst trying to add the printer - server-error-service-unavailable"
The G4 sees the printers (puts them in the printers to add list and even pings the 5MP for info (light flashes) but won't add either
I juat have the G4, G3, an old 7220/200, 5MP, ansante bridge and 8 port hub on the mini network. Haven't tried printing from the 7200 (on 8.6) but suspect it will be OK.
Hope you can help. G3 still prints OK to either printer and can mount G4 for sharing (but G4 can't mount G3 for sharing - but that's another disappointing result of a previous upgrade)

  • I can't add printers to my new mac book pro with retina display

I am trying to set up my HP wireless printer to my new mac book pro with retina display.   I can't get it to work!  I have down loaded the latest driver for my printer, and when I go into the printer area and try and add the printer, nothing shows up and it won't let me even add it.   I can't seem to connect my mac directly to my printer either as I must need a different cord as there does not seem to be a port for the "phone like jack" that I could fall back on with my old Mac.    My printer prints great so I hate to just buy a new printer, but I can't get this to work.   My wireless router is located in the basement, far away from where I keep my printer so it also makes it hard to rest everything.  I even bought the blue tooth adaptor for the HP printer thinking that would solve it all, and nope!  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have made some progress.... I can print wirelessly from my printer now, but I can't set the printer itself to be wireless.  I had to move my printer downstairs to where my router is...which is not that convient.   I printed up the page you asked about....and as expected, it says it is off line and there is no IP address.    So now I need to figure out how to make my printer itself wireless.  I did download the HP driver I needed...but I can't access it to do anything else.  It seems l like I am missing a step... or I need to hook up my computer itself to the printer to help get the printer to be wirelss, but I can't hook it up because there is no port for me to do that (no port that looks like a phone jack).  I am guessing I would need a different type of cord, but I am not sure what kind of cord that would be! Ugh!

  • OS X Server Primary Domain Controller - Win XP clients can't add printers

    Hello all,
I have a Xserve set up as a PDC with Open Directory / File / Print services running. I have set up a test client, a Windows XP box, with a test user, and it authenticates fine, logs in, directories are mapped, life is good
When I browse to the Printers on that server and go to "Connect" on any print queue I get the following:
"A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting to this print queue. Please contact your system administrator."
The print queues were set up in Server Admin as IPP / SMB / LPR + Bonjour shares. We don't really care who prints to what printer on our network, so access rights aren't a big deal.
Ultimately I would like a user to login and these printers just be setup automatically via a login script, but I can't even do that until this is sorted out. Any ideas?
Thanks for your time and assistance

...Someday I'll be an expert at this Mac Server + Win Client stuff, just not today

I do not have guest access on, because I want to monitor who is printing, but also have no file shares either - I want to keep separation between file and print servers.
    Finally found an (the?) answer.
    1. Set up a standard TCP/IP port pointing to the IP address.
    2. When the "Additional port info required" message turns up, choose 'Custom'.
    3. Set to LPR (and tick 'LPR Byte Counting Enabled" - optional?)
    4. Continue...
Strangely, this didn't appear to work will SMB was enabled in the print queue but it did when the queue was LPR only (maybe I just imagined that).
Not the best solution but it works for my situation.

  • 10.5.4: Can't add printers in system preferences

I have an HP Officejet 7210 connected to my wireless router via ethernet. When I was using Tiger, I never had a problem adding printers or printing to them. When I upgraded to Leopard, I had no printers on the printer list, so I tried to add my Officejet in the printers section of System Preferences. I clicked on the printer in the avaliable printers list. The computer proceeds to "Search for new drivers" but it never finds one. In fact, the spinning grey wheel thing (not the beachball cursor) next to the words "Searching for new drivers" is flickering while its spinning. Eventually it stops spinning and just flickers.
When I try to add the printer via IP, I put in the ethernet address, at it the computer wants to use the Generic PostScript Printer Driver. I looked in the list of pre-installed drivers, and the Officejet 7200 isn't even on the list, even though the HP website says the driver is pre-installed on Leopard.
Has anyone had similar problems? I think I'm going to have to call Apple tech support.

Nevermind. Reinstalled Leopard. Must have not installed Printing setup utilities properly upon first install.

  • Can't add printers with \\SERVERNAME\PRINTER_SHARENAME but can add printers with \\IP_ADDRESS\PRINTER_SHARENAME

    Hi,
I've started getting problems with attaching shared printers via group policy to are client computers.
All the event logs i'm getting seem to be pointing to permissions on the printer, but they seem to be fine as are other machines are attaching the printer ok.
The user 'Printer BLK' preference item in the 'DeployedPrinterALL {578F2C91-17FD-4E52-AA09-8C2CC8BAF3A4}' Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070005 Access is denied.' This error was suppressed.
As a test i've also been trying to attach the printer manually by going to
    \\SERVERNAME\PRINTER_SHARENAME but i get...
"Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000005). Access is denied."
We do have a secondary print server for are sister site and i can attach printers fine on the same computer. But the strange thing is that i can attach a printer on the problem machines by using the ip address of the server so
\\IP_ADDRESS\PRINTER_SHARENAME. Which lead me to think its permissions on the server or a possible DNS issue.
I've check DNS and the correct IP address is listed/name and i can ping the server from the problem machines.
Kinda confused with this one any help would be grateful ladies and gents.
    J

Do you have the print server on an actual server, with a static IP address, or do you have the print server set as client machines, desktops with DHCP?
With the DNS, how do you have it configured?
Are you using the DNS of the print server, or do you have the Printers configured with an A record?
    So for instance..
    Desktop is 192.168.1.101
    Printer is 192.168.1.102
    Do you have printer/192.168.1.102
    or do you have printer/192.168.1.101?

  • Admins can't add printer

I was messing around with the cups interface and all of a sudden no one can administer (add) printers. I did all the commands to add to the _lpadmin group. Doesn't matter. I even added a new administrator. Doesn't matter - the new account can't administer printers either. I keep getting asked for a login for a member of the lpadmin group. According to the CLI, I am a member of the _lpadmin group but doesn't matter.
I've tried all commands given in support forums. Everything shows right in the cli in terms of group membership but no one can administer printers.
I reset printers and also reset cups to the default configuration through the web interface localhost:631. I'm getting very frustrated. Can anyone help me?
