Can't add to dock

I am trying to add a new stack to my dock, but it won't let me. When I drag the folder to the dock, it shows what programs will try to open it when I hover over the apps, but when I release the mouse, it just goes back to the finder window (the icons in the dock don't separate like it knows I am trying to add something). I have tried this with a folder of apps as well as a folder of documents...
Also, when I try deleting something from the dock by dragging it off the dock, it shows the symbol with the icon (the "poof" or whatever it is!), but when I release the mouse, it goes right back to the dock. It also does this when I drag it to the trash. The only way I can remove anything is by click and hold on the icon and choosing remove from dock. It would be so much easier to just drag it off.

I think I haven an answer to part of your trouble. The Dock has two sides to it. The left-hand side is just for applications. The right-hand side is for documents and folders. You can't drag a document or folder into the left-hand side. If you look at the picture of the MacBook here, you'll see the dashed division line between the applications and the folders/documents in the picture.

  • Can not add items to the dock

I can not add icons to the dock, I am able SOMETIMES to edit the dock (moving icons around or delete them), there is no rule, sometimes I can grab the icon on the dock, and sometimes I just can't (I have the pop up when I can't) , I deleted users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and issued a killall dock command, with no difference.
    any help will be appreciated

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Dock did not return to default on that command?
Try again and also delete username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
If it's still no-go create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the Dock in this new account, if it works the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
    Let us know.
EDIT: Also are you running any enhancement software?

  • Can't add volume to dock

    Hello
We have one workstation that will not let us add a volume to the dock. We can add documents and applications but not a volume. The volume is on our network and is able to be mounted. It also is available in all other workstations docks.
Any ideas why we can't add it to the dock this particular Mac?

Are you adding it to the portion of the dock where the Trash is located? There is a divider in the dock that you may not have noticed. Apps and docs go to the left (if the dock is at the bottom of your screen), and drives/volumes go to the right.
    Give that a shot.

I can't add files or file aliases to the dock. All the help viewer says about this is this issue?

Hi Wagnerian, Welcome to Apple Discusswions.
When adding files or folders to the Dock, they must go to the right side of the hairline (the same side that Trash is on).
If this what you are doing and it still doesn't work navigate to /Users/YourHome/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and delete that file. then log out and back in or restart. (You'll have to reset your Dock the way you like it)

  • Adobe applications can't add to the application dock (Apple OS X Mav)

I try to dock Adobe applications on Apple OS X Maverics.
I can only add Adobe applications shortcuts to the right side but not to the applications side. I can move other ones and add other applications.
    Short screenrecording about the issue:
Adobe icons won't dock - YouTube

Glad to see this solution still works. Thanks robrevel2
NOT glad to see that this is still a problem under OS X 10.9.5 - I assume this continues to exist in Yosemite. It's great to see new features, but come on, how about some functional stability? I still occasionally lose the ability to toggle to hand tool with my spacebar.

  • Can't add facebook homepage to dock

Is there something special you have to do to add websites to the dock?
I can't add facebook to my wife's dock. I even set her account to be an administrator but it still won't let me add facebook.
I can still add applications to the dock
    Thanks

What procedure are you using to do this?
With referene to SIg's comment, if you are managing to add an application, those go on the other side of the line from where you should be trying to add documents or non-applications. look for that vertical line because it is pretty faint but is critical to where you can put what.

  • Can't add or remove programs from dock

I suddenly have a problem where I can't add or remove programs from the dock.  When I try to drag a program icon to the dock it won't stick to it and shows a "+" next to it in green.  When I try to drag an icon off the dock it shows a shadow of the icon that won't go away.  I tried making a new user and the same behavior occurs in that user.  I tried finding my com.apple.dock.plist but couldn't locate it.  I was able to find com.apple.dockfixup.plist and tried deleting that but it didn't help.  Any recommendations on where to go next?
    Thanks

Thanks, I will try this when I get home today.  However, the fact that the problem was not corrected when I made a new user makes me think that deleting this file from my user Library folder may not correct the problem.  Any other suggestions if deleting the dock.plist file doesn't work?

On iMac can't find scanner, how can I add it to finder or dock?
    20-inch, Mid 2007,
Processor  2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    OS X 10.9.2 (13C1021)
    and
    HP C5280 All-in-One printer/scanner
    Any advice appreciated

Thank you rk. The usefulness of image capture had somehow pased me by. To answer my own second question in case anyone needs to know, to put your printer in the dock you open printer & scanner in preferences, highlight your printer and drag its icon to the dock (in chains if necesary!)

  • How can I add the Happy Birthday widget to my mac?

How can I add the "Happy Birthday" widget to my dashboard?

Open a Finder window and click on the Macintosh HD on the left under Devices. One of the folders showing will be the applications folder; drag it onto the dock to the right of the System Preferences icon (individual apps can go to the left, but folders need to be to the right).
    Hope that helps.
P.S. Don't forget to update your equipment settings/signature.

  • How can I add monitor to 21.5" iMac purchased in 2014

Can I add a second monitor (HDMI connector) to my 21.5 iMac bought in 2014?  If so, how and what do I need?
    Thanks.

Apple sells em http://store.apple.com/us/accessories/all-accessories/cables-docks#!&f=video_cab le&fh=4098%2B2adc but you can get them MUCH cheaper elsewhere.

  • Can I add an image to Dashboard

I'd like to take a screenshot of an important document to refer to when needed. Can something like this be added to Dashboard for quick access?

No, but it can be added to the Sidebar in a Finder (folder) window. Drag its icon into the Favorites area of the Sidebar, and it should stay there.
You can also add it to the Dock, if you wish. Just drag the image's icon to the Dock, between the dashed line and the Trash (in the area where folders reside), wait for the icons already there to move aside, then drop it in. Note that like the Sidebar, this placement is a specialised alias, and is not the file itself - so don't trash the original.

  • Add to dock

i can't add an application to my dock

Not sure which method you've tried, but launch the application you want in the Dock and it should appear there. Control+Click or right click when the item appears in the Dock, select Options>Keep in Dock.
You should also be able to drag an appliction to the dock, a space will be created for it, let go and the apps icon should be in the Dock.

  • Can't add bookmarks anymore and issues with fix

    hi community
i need some expert help for i'm a newish mac user. i have a mac with os lion, safari 5.1.5
all of a sudden i can't add any bookmarks anymore using the plus sign next to url.  searched many websites which offer adequate solutions to fix but i cannot follow as folders/files can't seem to be found.  I even had trouble finding the safari folder as it don't exist under library-  may be clueless but i seem to have 2 folders for library: one under macintosh hd, the other under the system folder.  also can't find the bookmarks.plist file either using spotlight.  some sites say locate the com.apple.safari file, which seems to be missing in either cache folders, example of what is there is com.apple.components2.localcache.audiocomponents etc....
its frustrating especially when you find a good website to add to an already organised bookmarks folder.
NOTE- i did find safari folder via spotlight but within it was 2 folders of bookmarks and history and both don't have the bookmarks.plist file and only endless "webbookmarks..."

    Hi..
I even had trouble finding the safari folder as it don't exist under library-
The Safari app is stored in the Applications folder.
may be clueless but i seem to have 2 folders for library: one under macintosh hd, the other under the system folder
    There are two libraries.
    One is root /Library
The other is your user level   ~/Library   ~ (Tilde) character represents your Home folder.
I believe the cache you are searching for is the Cache.db but that may not help the Bookmarks issue. This may be more of a corrupted preferences problem.
Click the Finder icon in your Dock. From the Finder menu bar top of your screen click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly has you see it here:   ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Navigate to a site you want to Bookmark then from the menu bar click Bookmarks > Add Bookmark
If that worked, move that .plist file to the Trash. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder.
Deny.. when you post for help, please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed.

  • Ipad being seen as iphone, can't add music.

My iPad is being seen as my iPhone by iTunes. I can't add any new music on my iPad. Help!!

Try doing hard reset. Press and hold the home button and the wake/sleep button, ignoring the red slider, until the apple logo appears. You will not lose any data.
If that didn't work, try putting your device into recovery mode.
First plug the USB end into the computer, but DO NOT plug the other end to. The iPad just yet.
    Second, turn off the device.
Third, hold down the home button and then connect with the dock connector still holding down the home button.
Fourth, your iPad will turn on, and a Connect to iTunes message will be displayed, and iTunes will detect your iPad is in recovery mode. Restore it with your backup.

Apple sells adapters from either 30-pin or Lightning connectors to either HDMI or VGA. Check them out in the Apple Store at http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipad/ipad_accessories/cables_docks or your national equivalent "iPad Cables & Docks" store page.
Be sure to read the comments on whichever adapter is appropriate to your iPad model and your monitor model. Not every user has found satisfaction using them (though many have).
