Can't Administer Remote ARD Clients Over Internet

I am attempting to use Apple Remote Desktop to administer a computer in my office remotely from my home. So far, I have been unable to access it remotely (everything works fine if I am within the same LAN as the target computer). As far as I can tell (from reviewing other posts in this forum), I have configured everything correctly to make this work, but still no luck. Here are some details about my setup...
The target network router has a dynamic public IP address assigned by my ISP, so I have set up a dynamic DNS host for it at DynDNS.com and installed their DNS updater software on the client computer to properly resolve the hostname to the current IP address of the router. I set up port forwarding on the target network router for ports 5900 and 3283 (both TCP and UDP) and directed those ports to the internal static IP address of the computer I am trying to administer. I have tested the ports using the DynDNS Open Port Tool and both ports return a result indicating they are open and accepting connections.
When I attempt to access the target computer through ARD from outside the LAN, I am entering the dynamic DNS hostname in the "Network Address" section of the Scanner and it will show up immediately in the computer list below with the correct public IP address listed for the network router. However, when I attempt to add the computer to a list so that I can begin administering it, I am unable to verify my username and password for that target computer and it results in the entry showing up in the list as "offline." As I mentioned before, I can access this computer without difficulty using the same username and password when I am located within the LAN, so it does not seem to be a problem with those.
It would appear that my queries to this target computer are not getting through even though I have forwarded the necessary ports in the router. Any thoughts?

You want to be careful about opening ports that don't need to be opened, I'm not any kind of expert, but if you only need tcp, don't open udp just incase. Close the udp.
I know, I just opened it up to test things out. I closed it again as soon as I determined that was not the solution.
What kind of firewall is on your router? Is it something that you edit like a text document or do you click an add button and type a port number... specify an ip for the port to be forwarded to or just  a list of check boxes to open a port? Does it have or need you to tell it ip destinations for both directions? My firewall you have to tell it incoming traffic from external network on port x goes to ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and outgoing traffic on port x from ip xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx goes to external network. I would guess you don't need to specify both directions on yours, but you might want to check.
The router is a Actiontec PK5000 DSL modem. It has a GUI for editing the firewall settings (not a text file). As far as I can tell, you only need to specify port forwarding exceptions for incoming traffic, not outgoing. There are some fields within the port forwarding section of the GUI which are identified as "optional" entries that I don't quite understand, but I don't think they deal with outgoing traffic. They are identified as "remote ports" and "remote IP". I have been asuming that you would enter something into these fields only if you wanted to allow the specified port forwarding exception if the incoming traffic was from a specific external IP address and/or port(s). There is a notation next to these fields that says if you leave the fields blank, it will apply to all IP addresses and ports.
Now that I think about it, I'm not sure that I have ever tried entering anything into the remote port fields to see if that makes a difference. Perhaps I should try that. For example, if I am specifying that I want to forward port 5900, maybe I should try entering port 5900 in this optional "remote port" section as well. It seems like I should probably still leave he remote IP field blank. I won't be able to give this a try until I get back to the office on Monday.
One other thing... the router interface has the section I have described above called "Advanced Port Forwarding" but it also has another section called "Applications" where it seems that they have identified a number of pre-defined port forwarding rules that apply to specific applications/games. I have looked in there and there doesn't seem to be a pre-defined entry for ARD (there is one for VNC that opens up port 5900 only). Each entry specifies the ports to be opened up and then there is a blank field where you can enter the target IP address to be forwarded to. It is also possible to create new user-defined application entries in this section, so I have previously created a new entry for ARD to see if I might get a different result, but the end-result was the same.
I have considered buying a new dedicated router like the Apple Airport Extreme instead of using the router functionality of the DSL modem, to see if it's a problem specific to the router. Do you think this might get me anywhere?

  • Routing Issue for Remote Access Clients over Site to Site VPN tunnels

I have a customer that told me that Cisco has an issue when a customer has a topology of let's say 3 sites that have site to site tunnels built and a Remote Access client connects to site A and needs resources at Site B but the PIX won't route to that site. Has this been fixed in the ASA?

Patrick, that was indeed true for a long time.
But now it is fixed in PIX and ASA version 7.x.
Please refer to this document for details:

  • Locally displayed resolution of a remote ARD client question.

Hi - When I connect to a remote OSX system via ARD, am I limited to the max resolution of the client when displayed on the local system?  It seems as if I am.  There is no configuration on the local system for what resolution one wished the remote system to be displayed in.  As it is, my remote server has a 1024x768 resolution which works fine for its local display.  However, when I connect from my system which has 2 30" cinema displays, the 1024x768 is way too tiny.  I can actually go in via ARD and change the resolution up to 1600x1900, but then that's what it is set at.
You can do this in Windows by just scaling the window - this does not affect the remote system.  VMWare Fusion also allows one to recale VMs in the same way.  Does anyone know how I can set the locally displayed ARD window to be whatever I want it to be irrespective of the remote system's actual harware-set resolution?  Thanks.

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for your input. You're right I have used network streams.
I implimented more or less what I said in my original post. It works. My main objective was to keep all the config stuff, and data for the particular target on the target's SDCard. On reflection that did make my life much harder than keeping stuff on the host.
It is more (quite a lot more) involved to keep the config files on the target and send directory info etc. back to the host on demand. If I was to do this again I would probably keep the config files on the host machine and keep them in Dropbox or a Google drive so that if I had more than one host to work from (Work PC, Home PC and Laptop...) I would have all my files with little effort. Still I didn't konw that when I started.
    Thanks,
    James

  • Cisco Jabber Client for Windows 9.7 Can't Connect IPSec VPN Clients over two ASAs

    Environment:
2 x ASA 5540s (at two different data centers) configured as a VPN Load Balancing Cluster
Both ASAs are at version 8.4(5)6
IPSec VPN Client version: 5.0.07.440 (64-bit)
Jabber for Windows v9.7.0 build 18474
    Issue:
If I am an IPSec VPN user…
I can use Jabber to another IPSec VPN user that is connected to the same ASA appliance.
I can’t use Jabber to another IPSec VPN user that is connected to the different ASA appliance that I am connected to.
In the hub-and-spoke design, where the VPN ASA is a hub, and the VPN client is a spoke; if you have two hubs clustered together, how does one spoke communicate with another spoke on the other hub in the cluster? (How to allow hairpinning to the other ASA)

    Portu,
    Thanks for your quick reply.
Unfortunately, I do not have access to the ASA logs nor would I be permitted to turn on the debug settings asked for above.  I might be able to get the logs but it will take awhile and I suspect they wouldn't be helpful as this ASA supports thousands of clients, therefore, separating out my connection attempts from other clients would be difficult.
I can, though, do whatever you want on the Linux router.  Looking over the firewall logs at the time of this problem, I don't see anything that looks suspicious such as dropped packets destined for the Windows client.
As I said in my original post, I'm not a networking expert - by any means - but I am willing to try anything to resolve this.  (But I might need a bit of handholding if I need to set up a  wireshark andor tcpdump.)
    Thanks again.

  • After iCloud can no longer see my HD over internet

Used my HD over the internet that is connected to the back of my AE using mobileme
After iCloud this seems to have stopped. I just asume you can no longer do this under iCloud.
It was easy log into my laptop over the internet with my mobile me, the HD would show up in side bar... not now

For anyone who may have this problem in the future, I thought I would post a reply myself on how I solved this problem.
The problem turned out to be my router. In the middle of the night I had an idea, so I rebooted my router & switches & now ALL the computers (even the Windoze ones) show up!

  • WRV210- Can't establish Remote Desktop Connection over IPSec

    Hi there,
I changed the  BEFVP41 with WRV220 and configure the VPN  the same way, succeed to establish IPSec VPN connection with TGB VPN client with no problems but now Remote Desktop Doesn't work. I changed the firmware that didn't help. That didn't help as well, the answer is the same:The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connection might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. The Remote connection works fine in local and with BEFVP41 (even thou I had different problems with this one) the only change is the WRV210....Did you have this issue?
    Thank you
    Vesna

As a sort of work around, you could configure a dhcp reservation for that pc. Leave the machine as dhcp but know that it will always "recieve" a specific address. I think the problem the WRV210 experiences in this situation, is the mac address table times out and it flushes the pc's mac to ip binding. Therefore, it does not know who to send the request for X ip address to, because it no longer has a mac to port mapping.
However, when the router has the client via DHCP, the dhcp protocol takes care of making sure the mac does not time out in the CAM table. When the lease is somewhat close to expiration, the client renews and everything works fine. You can staticly map up to 20 addresses in the WRV210 (confirmed with configuration in lab).
With this solution, your RDP sessions and port forwardings will continue to work, and your mac will never timeout of the CAM table.

  • How can I share my iPhoto Library over internet

My friend and I want to share our iPhoto Library(size 5.19 GB and growing). We don't live together so we are not on the same network.
We were really hoping we could do this with mobile me. This is what we thought we could do with mobileme(but later found out it's not possible). Not possible but this is what we want to do: *We thought we would be able sync our iphoto library. This way we could work on or off line, make changes in iphoto have it auto sync and when he went to iphoto he would see the changes I made and he could make changes and I would see them when I went to iphoto. No one would have to manually sync or have to remember to sync.* On Mobile Me the sync function doesn't do it with iphoto. Are you aware of a company, software, or service that would allow us to do this?
Of if you don't know of a way we can have it sync then do you know of a service that we can store our library on and work from. The key would be to be able to work on the file while it's on their server at a reasonable fast speed. Doing it this way nothing would be physically stored on our computers. It would be stored on somoene else's server.
*Below are our options we are aware of using mobile me*(We are looking for other options:
We thought we could use mobile me to sync, but it doesn't sync iphoto. We could use idisk(in conjunction to or .mac account). We would upload the library to idisk, then when we wanted to use it we would download it to our computer make changes and upload it and the next person could do the same. The only problem is with it being so large it takes a very long time to upload to idisk/.mac account and up to now I haven't been able to get it up on .mac(I just got off the phone with mac and we tried everything and it the idisk sync just fails everytime.)Even if it did work it's not what we are looking for. The other option I am aware of would be to use *Back to My Mac*(also part of mobile me). This would entail both of us leaving our computers on(not in sleep mode) and we could log on to the other computer and grab what we want make changes and return it.
If you have other ideas please suggest.

YOu can share photos via web galleries but not the iPhoto library directly - and even if you were on the same network there is no ability to sync two iPhoto libraries
As to ahving your iPhoto library on the internet - no to that too - even a wireless connection to the library does not work - too slow and too unreliable - putting it on the net is not possible unless someone comes up with a giant step that direction
in addition to web galleries you can upload to your iDisk or to a third party service - Back to my Mac I guess would be a way - you would have to update yoru computer and your buddies doubling your work and increasing the time a lot more than that

  • ARD Client Doesn't Show When Using Scanner and Network Range

    All-
When I use the Scanner in ARD3 to scan a remote Network Range over the internet, the ARD client that I KNOW EXISTS in that same IP range DOES NOT show up (other ARD clients that I'm not interested in do show up, but not the specific ARD client I need to observe/control).
If I then call the user at the remote ARD client on the telephone, and have them give me their IP address (using www.whatismyip.com, for example), I can use the Scanner in ARD3 to "find" the ARD client and add it to my All Computers list. Process: change the popup box to read "Network Address" instead of "Network Range" and set the IP address field to the address provided by the user.
Why doesn't the remote ARD client show up when I scan for it using a Network Range in ARD3? Obviously, I don't want to have to call up each user every time I need to perform maintenance/control a client to get their (dynamic) IP address.
I could use dynamic DNS, but that's overkill. If I know (from experience) that my ARD clients are in IP ranges X, Y, and Z, then I SHOULD be able to simply scan for them (or so I thought).
    Any help appreceated.

Updated to ARD3.1 (admin and clients), but that did not solve the issue.
Let me try to restate the problem:
The ARD client is out of state/across the country (i.e., different sub-net) using a dynamically assigned IP adddress. I can (for now) connect to that ARD client successfully, and perform all ARD functions (that I've tried so far) becasue I know (for now) that client's IP address (I called and spoke with the user who used www.whatismyip.com to give me their IP address). So what's the problem, you ask?
Some time in the future, that same ARD client will have a new, dynamically assigned IP address. I'd like to be able to connect to that client without having to call on the telephone and ask the user what IP address they have been assigned now.
My thinking was that I could make a pretty good guess at their IP address (based on their old IP address, and the way Cable and Telco ISPs allocate/lease IP addresses). For example, if their current dynamic IP address is 999.888.777.45, I could guess that a subsequent dynamically assigned IP address would be in the range 999.888.777.2 to 999.888.777.255. With ARD, I could simply scan that range of network addresses using the Scanner and quickly find the ARD client I want.
I tried to do just that, and the ARD scanner did not find my client when I scanned the network range that the ARD client was actually in. It showed other ARD clients (that I do not administer, own, or want to hack into), but not the one I do want to observe/control/maintain (and have a legal right to). Somewhat paradoxically, when I used the Scanner to find the same ARD client by specific IP address, there was no problem.
Why doesn't the ARD Scanner "see" the ARD client when scanning the network range?

  • Drive Redirection virtual channel hangs when copying a file from server to client over RDP 8.1

    Problem Summary:
A UTF-8 without BOM Web RoE XML file output from a line of business application will not drag and drop copy nor copy/paste from a Server 2012 R2 RD Session Host running RD Gateway to a Windows 7 Remote Desktop client over an RDP 8.1 connection and the Drive
Redirection virtual channel hangs.  The same issue affects a test client/server with only Remote Desktop enabled on the server.
Other files copy with no issue.  See below for more info.
    Environment:
    Server 2012 R2 Standard v6.3.9600 Build 9600
the production server runs RDS Session Host and RD Gateway roles (on the same server).  BUT,
the issue can be reproduced on a test machine running this OS with simply Remote Desktop enabled for Remote Administration
    Windows 7 Pro w SP1v6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601 running updates to support RDP 8.1
    More Information:
-the file is a UTF-8 w/o BOM (Byte Order Marker) file containing XML data and has a .BLK extension.  It is a Web Record of Employment (RoE) data file exported from the Maestro accounting application.
-the XML file that does not copy does successfully validate against CRA's validation XML Schema for Web RoE files
-Video redirection is NOT AFFECTED and continues to work
-the Drive Redirection virtual channel can be re-established by disconnecting/reconnecting
-when the copy fails, a file is created on the client and is a similar size to the original.  However, the contents are incomplete.  The file appears blank but CTRL-A shows whitespace
-we can copy the contents into a file created with Notepad and then that file, which used to copy, will then NOT copy
-the issue affects another Server 2012 R2 test installation, not just the production server
-it also affects other client Win7 Pro systems against affected server
-the issue is uni-directional i.e. copy fails server to client but succeeds client to server
-I don't notice any event log entries at the time I attempt to copy the file.
    What DOES WORK
-downgrading to RDP 7.1 on the client WORKS
-modifying the file > 2 characters -- either changing existing characters or adding characters (CRLFs) WORKS
-compressing the file WORKS e.g. to a ZIP file
-copying OTHER files of smaller, same, and larger sizes WORKS
    What DOES NOT WORK?
-changing the name and/or extension does not work
-copying and pasting affected content into a text file that used to have different content and did copy before, then does not work
-Disabling SMB3 and SMB2 does not work
-modifying TCP auto-tuning does not work
-disabling WinFW on both client and server does not work
As noted above, if I modify the affected file to sanitize it's contents, it will work, so it's not much help.  I'm going to try to get a sample file exported that I can upload since I can't give you the original.
    Your help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.
    Kevin

    Hi Dharmesh,
    Thanks for your reply!
The issue does seem to affect multiple users.  I'm not fully clear on whether it's multiple users and the same employee's file, but I suspect so.
The issue happens with a specific XML file and I've since determined that it seems to affect the exported RoE XML file for one employee (record?) in the software.  Other employees appear to work.
The biggest issue is that there's limited support from the vendor in this scenario.  Their app is supported on 2012 R2 RDS.
What I can't quite wrap my head around are
why does it work in RDP 7.1 but not 8.1?  What differences between the two for drive redirection would have it work in 7.1 and not 8.1?
when I examine the affected file, it really doesn't appear any different than one that works.  I used Notepad++ and it shows the encoding as the same and there doesn't appear to be any invalid characters in the affected file.  I wondered
if there was some string of characters that was being misinterpreted by RDP or some other operation and blocked somehow but besides having disabled AV and firewall software on both ends, I'm not sure what else I could change to test that further
Since it seems to affect only the one employee's XML file AND since modifying that file to change details in order to post it online would then make that file able to be copied, it seems I won't be able to post a sample.  Too bad.

First, this is a forum of volunteers.  There is no "urgent" here.
"Urgent" means one of two things -
    1) people are dying, or
    2) you have a customer-facing, revenue-producing production system that is down.
(And to get some perspective on the second case, keep the first in mind.)
For the first, you call whatever civil emergency service seems appropriate.
For the second, you open an SR with Oracle - which requires a paid-up support contract. For *them* to consider your problem "urgent", you will need to demonstrate that your problem falls under item #2. I seriously doubt your problem fits that criteria.
You don't have a support contract?  Now you know the exact dollar figure that your company places on the data.
That said, you need to understand a few things about your specific problem,
First, port 1521 is only used by the listener to accept a connection request.  Once it gets that request (and finds that it is for a service (sid) that it knows about, it will fork a server process and tell the requesting client that it can communicate with that server process over some other port .. a randomly chosen port number in the "high" range.  It could be your vpn is blocking that other port, whereas your internal firewall is not.
But this is just an educated guess since I cannot find "can not connect remote oracle database over VPN" in any error message manual. If you had mentioned the VPN along with an actual oracle error message we could be much more precise in our diagnoses and recommendations.
    ---- edit 22 Sep
It occurred to me that I just assumed you were using the same client machine in both cases ... a laptop that you use both at work (local network) and home (vpn).  If that assumption is false, there are probably problems with your tns setup on the home (vpn) machine.
But again, it would be much easier to help if you gave us an actual error message.

    Hi,
Step 1 :In addition to that , please use remote connectivity analyzer to check outlook anywhere in internet .
From that we came to know the exact error .
Step 2: Most of the organisations are having an ISA or TMG firewall to create web published rules for exchange services .In case if you have you need to check the rule created for outlook anywhere is properly configured or not.

  • Client on internet MP

Hey huys, i have one primary site with mp and additional mp for internet clients. Everything works but one thing. Client on that internet mp is not visible in console- it show client = no. Tried to reinstall but nothing helps. Dont know what to do... Main
mp is communicating with intranet clients through http and internet mp only with internet clients on https. What can i o to make client on internet mp talk to main mp????
I can see this on main mp:
A client is trying to re-register with an administrator revoked certificate: SMSID=xxxxxxxxxxx
maybe it has something to do with certificates that are on internet mp for mp and dp???
To be clear its a client on mp- not a other internet client- a client installed on mp that is used as internet mp

"A client is trying to re-register with an administrator revoked certificate"
Based on that message, the client auth certificate is not valid on that system. Have you tried issuing a new client auth cert to that system?

    i did that:
    select
    *fromclientkeydatawhereisrevoked='1'
    Update
    clientkeydatasetisrevoked=0 whereisrevoked=1
    tthen
client finally started to work but now i got something else :(
    SMSID '9bfce40d-be2f-4e04-810c-757aaa4c0855' is invalid.
