Can't apply effects to some photos

I have a medium-size iPhoto library but some of the photos contained therein will not accept any affects. For example, most of my photos will accept a black-and-white or a sepia affect, but a very few refuse to; absolutely nothing happens. I've reverted to the originals without any luck. Does anyone have an idea as to what might explain this behavior?

what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what fixes have you tried?
where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?
will the problem photos accept any other effects or edits, i.e. is it only the B/W and sepia effects that don't work?
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some of the problem photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

Turning off "Ken Burns" effect for SOME photos

I see that someone has asked a similar question in the past and told that it's not possible to turn off the Ken Burns effect for some photos, but I'm hoping someone has a workaround or there's a hack...
I've made a slideshow and got the idea to "tell the story" by creating some "title" images in Photoshop elements which I've placed in between a series of photos.
These are just black backgrounds with the title (e.g. "...and the party begins", "Family reunion" etc.) in big white letters. I'm very happy with that idea
I like the Ken Burns effect for the slideshow as it adds some semi-video "action" effect, but NOT on the titles. Having the Ken Burns effect there just looks stupid, so I would like to remove it for the titles alone.
I know I can do it the other way round (go to "Settings" for the Slideshow, deselect "Automatic Ken Burns effect", then manually add the effect for all the photos I want), but with a slideshow album that's going to take ages to do!!
Is there a better way?

Perhaps you're checking the KB button on the "main" menu for the slideshow. That actually changes only the setting for the image that is currently selected. Try using the "Settings" button and deselect the "Automatic KB effect."

Can I apply effects to transitions?

the title really says it all...can I apply a quick blur to a wipe transition to soften the edge of transition from clip a to clip b ?

Check out the Gradient Wipe transition (not the Gradient Wipe effect--though it could be made to do the same thing). You create a grayscale image/gradient to define the wipe, and then depending on the "length" of the gradient, you can create a soft-edged wipe.
Another option would be Linear Wipe, in Video Effects > Transition; that has a built in softness slider, though you need to manually animate the transition and stack your clips on two tracks.

I can't drag and drop some photos to desktop

HI all,
I need your help. I am trying to drag and drop photos from iPhoto to my desktop. Some photos will drag and drop (as always) and now all of a sudden some photos will not. When I drag one of these photos, a "no entry' sign appears with the photo as it crosses the boundary from iPhoto to the folder/desktop. I am unable to export some photos in any way. What gives? This has never happened before and I am stumped. I have never written the forums before so I hope you can help!

What happens if you double click on the thumbnail to view the photo in a larger size? If you Control-click on the thumbnail and select "Show File" or "Show Original" (if it's been edited) are you taken to the folder where the original file is located an it highlighted?

IMovie won't apply transitions between some photos

Software won't apply simple transitions between some photos. Have tried super short transitions (dissolve for eg) for a photo that appears for extened time, but no luck. Sometimes, this 'block' then affects the entire project, not allowing any transitions at all within that project.
Have reinstalled iMovie, which appeard to fix the problem, but as soon as I made say, 4 new transitions, it won't allow to make any more.
Is there a limit on total transitions for projects?

1. Its a 15 min project - with mostly DV - and saw, about 20 pics at the end of the project
2. Have 200 Gig free disk space. Not an issue
3. The problem has occurred on two very recent projects. And only appears at the end of the project (ie. just as I am doing finishing touches - which has driven me to distraction!) Both projects are no more than 15 min - both have transitions (short dissolves, overlaps) thru most of the project. But at some point iMovie appears to say 'enough' and won't allow any more transitions any where else of any length (ie under transitions menu the word APPLY is no longer highlighted). Which is odd to say the least.
4. No problems on earlier projects (but admittedly, this has started in the latest iMovie HD that i have been using). Have been using iMovie for over a year though.
5. All projects stored on internal drives.

Hi, I am really basic at illustrator and just want to apply effects to some text. Can anyone help?

I'm trying to design book covers. I just want to add affects to some text which is on top of a photograph I have placed. I am rubbish at this stuff. Can anyone walk me though it???

When I select the text using the black arrow and then go to Filter, all of the options are greyed out. What I really want to do is have a light behind the text, as if it is glowing.

Can't apply stamps to some documents

The toolbar for stamps is active for 8.5 x 11 documents. It does not activate when I pull up full size drawings to stamp (24 x 36)? (I'm new to this, any help appreciated!)

Can you apply edits from one photo to another

I frequently take a series of images of the same subject (usually a bird). What I often need to do is apply essentially the same edits to all of the images (I say "essentially" because I'll probably need to adjust the position of the crop and the description will also need tweaking). Is there a way of doing this directly in the iPhoto interface (if so, I can't find it)? Or indirectly by duplicating the xmp file of the first image and (by renaming and relocating) apply it to a second and other images? Because I'm working with Camera Raw images, this latter approach is easy with Adobe's Bridge but iPhoto seems to use a hashing mechanism to name the support files making it difficult to work out which file needs duplicating and where to put and what to call the duplicate.
Has anyone faced and licked this issue?

In iPhoto's Edit menu there is Copy adjustments and Paste adjustments.
This will duplicate basic edits (like enhance or adjust) but I don't think it will crop & fill in descriptions etc.
There is also the Photo's menu > Batch change that can handle Title, date & description fields en-masse. Just select the desired photos to make the menus active.

Can't edit or delete some photos

iPhoto has got me scratching my head. I've got a few photos that I can't edit or delete. I ran the iPhoto permission, library, and thumbnail rebuilds without any success. I looked at the file permissions and I have r/w.
One odd thing is that I can see them in a smart album that matches a keyword but if I click on Library/Photos and search on the keyword, the problem photos don't appear. The smart album contains both problem and non-problem photos.
If I export/import a problem photo (losing the keywords in the process), the new version is fine. So I'd just do that but I can't delete the originals so they'd be hanging around forever
Any ideas?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

After applying effects random green frames appear

When applying effects, for some reason 1-2 seconds after the effect plays there are green frames in the video. This also has happened when I used the option to slow down the video speed. Its happened to me on all projects that I have used effects on and I don't know what to do.

Do you have two video cards? There's a KB article about green frames occuring on export if you have two video cards.
Are you editing original media or optimized? You might try using optimized media as maybe the encoder is having problems with the h.264 codec.
Also try clearing out all render files from both the event and project and have it re-render everything.

'fun house' effect on some older photos since OSX 10.8.5 installed

since installing OSX 10.8.5 i've discovered a problem with some of my older photos in my iphoto library. there doesn't seem to be any consistency to which photos were affected.
some photos are no longer in their correct orientation. some photos have been stretched horizontally and some vertically.
i can see these problems in the thumbnails, but when i click on the photo to look at more closely, it vanishes. in fact it seems like it shrinks to a dot on the screen. kind of an 'alice in wonderland' effect.

since it's mostly fixed, i'm wondering what step 4 would do. the message makes it sound a little risky.

Rebuilding will completely recreate the library from the parts in the Aperture library. It is a routine repair tool and in itself not risky, only I would never try it without having a working backup. The problem is, taht rebuilding can take a very long time - you would not want to invest the time, if it is unnecessary. Also, if something should happen in between - a system crash, a probem with the drive, you would be left with an incompletely rebuild library.
In your case, I doubt that the rotation would have been fixed by rebuilding, so it does not appear to be necessary.

Can't "Apply" Fast/Slow/Reverse on some clips

I have some clips in my timeline that I cannot change the speed on. This typically happens with a clip that I already edited in some way. Particularly when I have already altered the playback speed on it before. When I try to do this now, the Apply button is grey and won't respond.
Anyone know how come? Thanks

I have a somewhat similar problem. For a while now, I haven't been able to apply any Fast/Slow/Reverse effects at all. I can select the effect, and even preview it in the main window, and when I click apply it even takes a little while and shows a progress bar while it "renders" the effect. But when it's done, I'm left with a clip with no thumbnail (in the timeline) that, when played, just plays what was there already, but since it extends the length of the clip in the timeline, the whole rest of the timeline is off from what the movie actually is.
I'm using iMovie HD 5.02
Anybody run into this before, or have any ideas?

In iPhoto albums may contain photos with the same file name - iPhoto handles that just fine
If you are exporting them to move somewhere else use the sequential file name feature of export to give each file a unique name

I recently tried to burn some photos to a disc. It did not work, but then I ended up with a .fpbf folder on my desktop. Can't trash it, and when trying to burn again, I get this "... can't be burned because the original items can't be found". Help???

I recently tried to burn some photos on a CD. For some reason, It did not work. Now I have a .fpbf folder on my desktop. I can't seem to get rid of it. I tried dragging it to the trash, but then I get a box asking my to type my password it, so Finder can make the changes. Doing so, does nothing at all. And when I try to burn another CD from the same .fpbf file, I get a the following message: "There are 35 items that can’t be burned because the original items can’t be found. Skip the items and continue burning?". When I skip and continue burning, nothing shows up on the CD. In the meantime, the .fpbf folder is still in my desktop. I tried changing the aliases on each pic, but it still doesn't work. Any ideas of how I can remove this folder from my desktop?

Thank you for your detailed explanation but something is seriously wrong with my computer. Although the method you have described is very similar to the one I tried in step 2 from my second post, I have since "done things" which may have complicated matters—or suggests that my computer has a more serious problem.
Here's what I did:
1). Installed Onyx and discovered that I had a .plist file (com.apple.iphotomosaic.plist) that was causing a Syntax error: "Conversion of data failed. The file is not UTF-8, or in the encoding specified in XML header, if XML." After doing some research online, I was given the understanding that downloading the iLife update 9.0.3 (I installed the more recent version, 9.0.4) would solve this problem because it would also fix some system issues. So, I downloaded it...and when it didn't solve the problem, I decided to just deleted that .plist file.
2). I read your knew post and decided to follow your directions, even though I realized they were basically the same steps I followed in the 2nd method I mentioned earlier. I say "basically" because, for some reason, after inserting a blank disc, my computer does not open the disc in the Finder. Instead, it places the blank disc's image on the Desktop, even though the Finder's Preferences and the System's Preferences are set to have it open in the Finder—nothing should be on my Desktop! (Note: When transferring the items (all folders) I want to burn to the blank disc, I did not use the Option-Click-Drag method as before, I used the Click-Drag method, which created the curved arrow in the lower left corner of each item.)
Now, for the result of "method 2," the method we basically have in common, the computer goes through the burn stage but, in the verify stage, tells me that it is unable to verify the disk, suggests that my DVD may be unreliable and that I should try another disc, and then tells me about some "fork" (?) error (-43).

How were you sharing the photos?
Try to backup your iPhoto library and hold down the option and command keys while launching iPhoto - key the keys down until the first aid window appears - rebuild your database
