Can't assign PPD in Print dialog or preset (ID CS5, Mac OS X 10.6)

I've been having some trouble recently with ID CS5 resetting itself from time to time as if I'd trashed the Preferences: it loses all Recent files, presets, etc. Fortunately I'd exported presets from CS4 when I upgraded, but there are two problems with Print presets. (1) The order is scrambled when I load the exported file, and (2) it says something like "The PPD you want is unavailable. Use Generic PPD?" There are only two choices, Yes and Cancel, neither of which I really want. When I try to re-create a Print preset, or indeed when I try to start from scratch in the Print dialog, the PPD pop-up is greyed out for all of my printers; I can't select anything, and they're not already identified with the printers as they always used to be. The printers are nothing unusual: a Brother, an Epson, and a Hewlett-Packard, all with up-to-date drivers and PPDs in HD/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources. I've tried copying the PPDs to Applications/Adobe Creative Suite CS5/Adobe InDesign CS5/Presets/PPDS (having created the last folder and used that capitalization, following advice in another thread), but with no result. Since the PPDs in the HD Library are .gz archives, I tried expanding them in the ID CS5 folder, but that hasn't helped either.
Any advice? I should emphasize that I am NOT trying to print to PostScript or PDF – I've followed those threads and get the message. I'm talking about PPDs for physical printers!
ID CS5 7.0.3, Mac OSX 10.6.5, Mac Pro 8-core 3GHz

Wow, thank you!!!  I actually did search pretty thoroughly on the web as well as a moderate search these forums, but oddly enough, I somehow overlooked that thread.  Funny, as it was only from several days ago.
My computer never had ADPDF9.PPD in the first place.  Any clue why this is?
Many thanks,

  • Saving Photoshop CS5 Print dialog box presets or defaults?

This question was asked in 2008 for PS CS3 with no answer, so I will ask it again...
    OS 10.6.4
Using Canon iPF 5100 and 6100 printers
    CS 5 Photoshop
Is there a way to set a preset in the PS Print dialog window for 'Photoshop manages color' and the ICC profile so that I do not have to reset them every time I print?
Also, where does PS pull the information for the printers pop-up menu near the top of the Print dialog box? Is this a preset or is it just pulling these printer names from the OS? I ask this because when I switch between one of the iPF printers, the Print > Color Management section defaults back to 'Printer Manages Color' and greys out the profile pop-up menu.
    Thanks.

No, no presets but you can record the settings in an action. The action can record printer, printer settings and color management settings.

  • Can't connect my P1102w printer to my wireless network (using Mac OS 10.6)

I have a vanilla home wireless network (D-Link to a cable modem), and a MacMini running OS 10.6.8. My Mac laptop and 4th. Gen iPad work seamlessly. But my hours-long attempt to connect my new HP P1102w to the network has been totally frustrating, despite close study of the pdf documentation, the printer's self-test/Device configuration sheet, browsing this forum, watching a slew of YouTube/HP videos, and  following all manner of directions.
The only consolation is the printer works fine on its USB connection.
Here are some issues I've encountered that have stopped me in my tracks:
Carefully following both the pdf instructions and HP's online how-to video, I get through Step 6 w/ no problemn. but then I go to Step 7, which says:
" Under Communication Mode , click Infrastructure , select your network SSID from the Available Network Names (SSID) list, and then click the << button."
Problem is there's nothing of the kind in that window. All I see is a status of the Wireless: enable or disabled (depending on a choice). And even if I try selecting Enabled, it switches right back to Disabled. Aside: I note the printed instructions show a copyright date of 2011. That's ancient history in the CPU world.
Other issues: The only IP address I can find for the printer is the IPv4 address, but that's only for Direct Print Configuration. Is that the IP address I'm looking for?
The printer's hardward address, I assume, is its MAC ? Boy, I could sure use clearer use of language here.
So, needless to add, I'm stuck. It seems it should be THAT hard, but so far nothing I've been able to find on HP support or the forums seems to help. Thanks for any advice you can provide.
PS. I'd hate to have to return this printer because I'm a two decade HP printer lover, but, alas, I may have to if I can't find a solution.

    Hi @Northwest-John,
I see by your post that you are unable to setup the printer on the wireless network. I can help you.
Update the printer's firmware by the USB connection just to make sure that isn't causing any issues with the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) not allowing the proper changes. HP LaserJet P1102w Firmware Update Utility.
The newest version is 20130703, which you can compare by printing the configuration page.
Power cycle the router and restart the Mac.
The printer won't recognize the network name if there usually is any symbols or spaces in the network name.
Make sure Safari is set as the default browser. Sometimes the Embedded Web Server (EWS) won't open in other browsers. Open Safari, across the top select the Safari menu, select Preferences, General, set as default.
Turn the printer off, hold down the wireless button and cancel (x button) while turning the printer back on and don't release the two buttons until the printer stops making noise.
Print out a configuration report and make sure the SSID and IP address are cleared.
(hold down the x button and when the printer makes a noise let go)
Connect the USB cable from the printer to the Mac.
Go to the Apple, system preferences, print and fax.
    Double click on the P1102w.
    Open the utility.
    Click printer setup.
    Click HTML config.
This should open the Embedded Web Server for the printer.
    Click the Networking tab.
Click Wireless from the list on the left.
(Click Enable if you have this option)
Under Communication Mode , click Infrastructure.
Select your network SSID from the Available Network Names (SSID) list and then click the << button so the network name moves over to other box.
From the Security Mode pop-up menu under Authentication , click WEP, WPA/WPA2 or open . Your selection depends on which Wireless Security Protocol your network uses.
Make sure you select either hexadecimal or alpha depending on your password. (very important)
    Apply the settings.
In the confirmation box, (changes have been saved) click OK.
You should get a solid blue light on the printer shortly.
Then all we have to do is delete the USB driver and add the network driver.
    Click on the Apple.
    Click system preferences.
Click the print and fax icon.
Highlight the printer and click on the - sign to delete the printer. (USB driver)
    Disconnect the USB cable.
Then click the + sign and select the printer from the list and click add. (P1102w bonjour)
    Test the printer.
If you have any issues with the HTML config opening then do the following steps:
    Close any applications.
On the Apple menu bar, click Go, computer, MAC harddrive, Library, Printers, HP, LaserJet, click on folder for your printer, click on EWS browser or HTML config, click the Networking tab, click wireless on the left and fill out your information. (make sure infrastructure is selected) Apply settings.
Then delete the USB driver and add the network printer.
Let me know if you are still having issues with filling out the EWS for the printer.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

  • How can we print using the windows printer dialog window?

    Hi,
We recently got new printers and a printer setup on our server that are set to print in greyscale as a default. In the past the printers defaulted to printing in color. When I create VI's and reports I have used to set "Print on completion" or the print option from the Report Generation Toolkit, and I have received my prints in color. After changing the printer drivers on the server any printing method I used to do from LabVIEW will always produce greyscale prints. These prints are fine for everyday use, however we need color prints when the documents are for customers or for other official use.
If I could only send documents/VI's to that process the user could override the "greyscale" setting and select "color" in the cases where we need a better looking print. Obviously the other option is to save the document/VI as a file and later print it from any windows software (Excel, Paint etc.).
Do anyone have any neat tricks for printing using the windows printer dialog?

You can change printer settings programmatically via a .NET assembly. You can also bring up the Print Dialog to change settings manually before printing.

  • Error when opening print dialog

I am on a MAC using photoshop CS5  version 12.0.6.  I specified an unsupported custom size for a printer and it now causes an error when I attempt to open the print dialog by choosing "Print" from the file menu.  If I select "Print One Copy", the document attempts to print but generates error.  Since I can't get to the print dialog, I can't change the print setting.  Is there a file or way to change the print setting by some other means?

There's no such thing.  The latest version of Photoshop for the Mac is 12.0.2.
What routine trouble-shooting steps have you taken so far?

  • Saving print dialog settings

I have a machine with adobe reader 6.0 in which different users are logging with different account.
If a administrator changes print dialog settings such as Auto rotate and center or Page scaling (Fit to page, Shrink page sizes) while printing a document, the same settings are not visible in print dialog of various users which log onto same machine.
Does AcroReader stores settings differently for different users ?
Where does it store settings in registry or a seperate settings file for each user ?
How can i have same settings (Print dialog settings) for different users ?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

It does say, "Double-sided: Yes," in Windows' printer properties for the Bizhub PS (and PCL) Fiery driver(s) -- in fact, this may have been from me turning it on for the PS driver in Windows Registry, as it was off for some reason, but seemed to make no real difference anyway -- but I think the duplexing option would have been grayed-out in the Fiery driver's dialog if not available as some various other options are -- the driver has the capability to poll the device for such options availability -- and I don't actually see anything duplexing-related on the Installable Options tab, but the Installed list is identical to one of our XP computers with no apparent issues with printing to the drivers from InDesign -- although at one point, if a Vista user printed an InDesign document and saved it (and thus the printer settings), XP users for some reason couldn't print the document without forcing a change in the print driver settings, but I believe this was due to using the same drivers but different TCP/IP port configurations per machine (Vista doesn't need the IP_ prefix as XP seems to).

  • Print Dialog Box using jdk1.4

Is there a way to bring up print dialog box in jdk1.4. I am using the new api( javax.print.* ) for printing. But dont know how to get an interface to the Dialog Box.

Our printing functions (PrintCtrl, PrintPanel, etc.) will bring up the print dialog if you select to show it in the function call. If you weren't using our print function, you can bring up the Windows print dialog box with the Windows SDK function PrintDlg. Consult SDK documentation for help with this function.

  • Taking control of OS print dialog box

    Hi,
Can I customize the OS print dialog box which appears, when I execute the FlexPrintJob.start method? I want to enable page range selection and some other fields.
Other option is, if some how I can get the list of printers and other printer specific options availabe in my custom Dialog box.

ShellExec is part of lvwutil and merely calls a function in Shell32.dll. There is nothing about the function call that controls the display of the printer dialog. I think that what shell32.dll does when it prints (just like right clicking on the file) is print the file according to what is defined about that file type in Windows Folder Options. On my Win2K system, the print application is defined as "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\msohtmed.exe" /p %1. If I remove the /p, then Word starts up and in order to print, I get a printer dialog when choosing Print from the File menu. So it seems like the printer dialog is entirely dependant on the application that does the printing. I get no dialog when I use the VI to print a .txt file. I
nstead of using shell32, you might want to try some ActiveX method or property of an application like Internet Explorer that can open and print an html file.

  • Problem with custom print dialog in Illustrator cs3 on OS X

    Hello Illustrator Support Forum,
I am an IT systems administrator and I have a user that has a problem when printing from Illustrator to our Ricoh photocopier.  The problem is that Illustrator uses its own custom print dialog and not the default mac os x system one.  This prevents the print job from going through because it does not send the required user code along with the print job.
A work around we found was to print to Adobe Distiller creating a pdf then printing from there but this definately not ideal.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    - Vince

    Hi Larry,
Thanks for the tip.  This makes it a bit easier of a work-around but its still not a fix for the initial problem of printing directly through Illustrator.

  • Can anyone recommend a print server that will work with Mac & PCs?

Can anyone recommend a wireless print server that will work with Macs and PCs ?

Wireless has a disadvantage for many Powerbooks.  Unless yours supports 802.11g, it is not secure.  So it must support Airport Extreme on the Powerbook to have a secure wireless network.   Also many printers only support 802.11b, making matters worse, as that is not secure.  See my FAQ* on printing:
    http://www.macmaps.com/printersx.html
Some printers have ethernet ports, which would allow you to use a Wireless ethernet bridge that is 802.11g.  Similarly you could use one on the Mac, and then you'd have your wireless printing.  Ask the printer manufacturer what might be possible.  The last thing you want is an insecure network, especially if you are at most 4500 meters/1500 feet from someone who could pick it up and log into it that you don't want.

  • Printing a PDF in Illustrator on Mac

Could someone show me what a healthy Illustrator CS5 or CS6 Print dialog looks like on a Mac?
I recently purged a bunch of outdated "Adobe PDF 7.0"-related printer files from my computer and several weeks later discovered that significant portions of my Illustrator Print dialog were now disabled. It's weird because these files don't actually work on Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard), and yet they seem essential to accessing the various Print dialog features (including layout preview) as well as the OS-related Page Setup... and Printer... options.
Thes screenshots show the Print dialog first with the Adobe PDF 7.0 files installed and then without—note the many disabled features in the second screenshot.
I now feel trapped into keeping this vintage, dysfunctional printer driver. I'm wondering whether something went missing from my CS5 or CS6 installations—an Acrobat component that would replace Adobe PDF 7.0 and allow for a full range of printing options in Illustrator.
I've also spent a ridiculous amount of time dealing with this problem and seem to be getting nowhere.

Alright, I've now taken a closer look at the recommended link.
I downloaded the Acrobat 9 PPD file and placed it in the Illustrator CS5 Presets folder. Then, in the Print dialog, I had to navigate to that PPDs folder to actually load the file; however, once chosen, it remains the default option. (From what I understand, the Acrobat 9 PPD file is analogous to the specific printer PPD option that I was choosing before—e.g., Brother DCP-145C—but allows for custom page sizes.)
Once my job is ready, I can click Save to save a PostScript file to my chosen location. From there, I can convert that PostScript file to a PDF using Preview. (This latter part was news to me, and is helpful to know.)
So this works... But I'm still not saving a PDF directly from the Print dialog, and I still have no access to the Mac OS's Printer or Page Setup options (which were enabled prior to my removing all the Adobe PDF 7.0 stuff).
So is this it? Or am I missing something? The recommended link is rather vague about support for the 'Create Adobe PDF' command from the PDF menu in the Mac OS print dialog box, saying that "InDesign and Illustrator sometimes don't support this feature, depending on the version you are using". In my case, it was clearly supported, until I removed the Adobe PDF 7.0 files.

  • Can't get correct Print Dialog options when installing Epson 3800

    Hi,
I am certainly not an expert at Mac OS. I have exhausted all my options on getting the Epson 3800 driver installed correctly. I am very thankful for any help since I have been working on this issue for 4 days.
I connected my Epson 3800 to my PowerPC via USB. The proper driver shows up on the "About this Mac" window under printers. I added the printer through the "Print & Fax" option. I select to use the 3800 printer option for the Selected Printer for the Print Dialog. However, when I use print in any application (Text Edit, Photoshop CS3) I only have the following options available in the pulldown below the Presets box:
    Copies & Pages
    Layout
    Scheduler
    Paper Handling
    Color Sync
    Cover Page
    Summary
I have no PDF button available on the panel. I should have about 3-4 more items on the list (e.g. Print Settings). Also the driver being used doesn't show up on Print Dialog.
I can get different settings with my cheap HP Officejet 4300 All-in-one printer.
I've reinstalled the OS a couple times. I've reinstalled the driver many times. Sometimes there is a Epson USB option available from the More Printers button in Add Printers and sometimes not. I've also tried installing with Ethernet and got the same result - shorter Print Dialog options.
I have printed to the printer without using any advanced options. However, this greatly limits the capabilities. The printer appears to be talking to the computer - I can get ink levels displayed on the screen.
I've been walked through the setup process by Epson technical support twice but they were stumped. Looking for any suggestions or areas to investigate. I'm really baffled and I've spent hours on it.

The PPD File version is listed as 1.0
I tried the safe boot option. You weren't kidding about taking a while. I thought my Mac was trying to take off with all the fan noise. :o) However, it still didn't work - no PDF button.
I did the printer utility reset but that didn't seem to work either.
I tried the shareware you recommened. However I got the same result. Perhaps I should restart? This is the output from it:
