Can't attach photos -- "Preview" only shows iPhoto library Icon

I can't attach (or upload) photos anymore. When I try to attach a photo using Mail (not directly from iPhoto), I only get the iPhoto Library icon and Preview doesn't show any of my various pictures. If I click on the Library icon, Mail tries to attach my entire photo library and then my iMac locks up. I have the same problem if I try to upload pictures to say an ebay auction. I'm using the new iLife '08.
Basically, I cannot get a listing of all my individual pictures -- only the iPhoto Library icon. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic. You can also drag and drop directly from the iPhoto Window to the Mail window. This works with many other apps.
2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy. This is the best solution for uploading pics to ebay or where ever. After the upload is finished you can trash the file on the desktop, it's only a copy.
3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.

  • Can I import photos from an old iPhoto library?

Can I import photos from an old iPhoto library on an external hard drive to my current iPhoto library?  The icon on the hard drive appears greyed out when I try via Import.

Open the older library and export the Photos from it to the Finder (File -> Export) and switch to the new Library and import those.
Or, use  iPhoto Library Manager to move the photos, plus all the versions and associated metadata to the new Library.

  • Can I recover photos lost from an iPhoto library that was on an external HD?

I had about 2,000 photos on my iPhoto library that was being stored on an external HD that is plugged into my AirPort Extreme base station 2TB.  Today, I imported another 550 photos from my iPhone to that library and now all that seems to be there is the latest iPhone import.  I can't find the old photos anywhere - they seem to have vanished.
I tried running iPhoto Library Manager's rebuild function but it only comes up with the 550 photos I imported today.

You can try a file recovery application like File Salvage - you can download a free trial and it will scan the disk for you and tell you with might be recoverable. Actual recovery will require that you purchase the app. There may be many files with the same or similar names. Always recover the largest file size.
There are other such apps. Search on Macupdate or the App Store

  • I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?

I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?

    Exactly what did you do?
    The correct steps are
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
My guess is that that you have not switched iphoto to use the external drive yet - opttion launch and select libary

  • Lightroom will not import my photos.   It did up to a week ago.   I have changed cards and cameras (both worked two weeks ago).   I can import the photos to Picasa and iPhoto

Lightroom will not import my photos.   It did up to a week ago.   I have changed cards and cameras (both worked two weeks ago).   I can import the photos to Picasa and iPhoto.   I get the following error message:
Some import operations were not performed.
The following files were not imported because they could not be read  [followed by a list of the files I wanted to import]
Thumbnails show up.  LR just will not import them.
Any idea what is going wrong?

If the Import button is not clickable, that means that Lightroom thinks you have no new photos to import (one possible reason is that they are duplicates)
So, you need to figure out why Lightroom thinks that. The way I would do this is to search your Library module for at least one of the photos, by file name. To do this, you would follow all 4 of these steps in sequence:
Click on All Photographs in the Catalog Panel on the left of the Library Module
Turn off all Filters (Ctrl-L or Cmd-L once or twice)
Expand all stacks: Photo->Stacking->Expand All Stacks
Search for one or more of the photos using the Filter Bar (press backslash), search by File Name

  • When i look for photos in finder my iphoto library does not appear, but when i open iphoto, all my photos are there, how can i fix this?

this means i can't attach photos from iphoto to emails for example, how can I remedy it?

Of course you can, just remember that iphoto replaces the finder. It's the manager for your photos.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List

  • When I try to upload pictures onto iPhoto, it shows up, but it won't let me import my pictures. And when I want to close iPhoto it says "Photos being uploaded to iPhoto library, please wait to finish uploading," but I am not uploading anything.

When I try to upload pictures onto iPhoto, it shows up, however it won't upload. The "import" button, I can't click on it. It won't upload. And when I want to close out the window of iPhoto, it won't close, I get a message saying "photos being uploaded to iPhoto library," but i can't even upload. This has been like this since late April...

    What version of iPhoto?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

How can I compress photos when emailing from iPhoto?
current photos are 7-8Mb each if I just attach them directly

Aperture won't delete the photos from your iPhone. Most users have settled on using Image Capture ater importing into Aperture to delete the photos from the iPhone.

  • Photo descriptions only shows 2 lines

Think I found a bug, under photo info the photo title only shows one line and its only 2-3 words long, also the description only shows 2 lines. So if you have a description that is about a paragraph long you can't see it all. However if you mouse over the description you can see the content through a pop up window.
What a pain to have to do this all the time, especially since that side panel has a mile of room under the faces icon that is not being used.

Basically a support - two lines of description visible is Not Enough, and given the size of the panel it could be auto-extended to fit; that's what computers are for! The tooltip presentation is definitely the wrong approach for a description - it should be there when you view the pic!

  • My ipod is only showing the Apple Icon and wont turn on past that. It also won't connect to my computer so I can't restore it. What Should I do? Should I go to an Apple store and have them take a look at it?

I don't know what to do. It is only showing the apple icon. I've tried turning it on and off and it just stays on the icon. It also wont connect to my computer so I can;t restore it like I have been told to do. So should I take it into an apple store? Or is it a lost cause..??

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Hi! I just update my apple tv 2nd gen to the new solfware but it only show the itunes icon on the tv and after shows nothing on the tv screen. What i can do to fix that?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)
