Can't back up iphoto -  error 36

Trying to back up my iphoto library to an external hard drive. About halfway through I get an error message telling me one of the images can't be accessed, error 36.
I applied Terrence Devlin's advice found in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1179907.
I used the Batchmod to make sure this wasn't a permissions issue.
The backup still failed with the same error, same file.
I then located the file in question in my library but when I tried to delete the troublesome file, it completely froze my entire computer. After about 15 minutes of the hard drive whirling away, Finder finally crashed.
So how do I get around this file that is causing the backup to fail if I can't delete it?
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks!

Assuming you mean error -36, not 36, I' ve been having serious error -36 ugliness, also with my precious iPhoto Library. (:-(
It appears the -36 error (documented somewhere as "ioErr I/O error (bummers)"), at least in this context, means a corrupted file has been encountered. However it was allowed to get corrupted (OS, file system, hardware - whole other can of worms), apparently no GUI apps are robust enough to deal with it; all choke or even crash; IIRC:
iPhoto duplicating problem file fails: "unreadable files: 1/the following file could not be imported/import failed"
Finder copy fails on the first file - preventing any other files from being backed up - catastrophically bad!
Finder "create archive" chokes "an error occurred while archiving this file" - also very bad
Disk Utility verification passes; however…
Disk Utility can't make a new disk image containing the data - in case you thought this might be another way of backing up your data
Quick Time Player may display a black window on file open attempt
Preview crashes on file open attempt
Alas, no help from DiskWarrior or Drive Genius II, either, in dealing with the corrupt files. (:-(
Here's my strategy:
If you're Unix-savvy, use shell cp command (cp -rvf, I think; log standard error to a file); otherwise use Carbon Copy Cloner to make the backup.
Either way, the logged errors will show you the names (and paths) of problem files, e.g.:
cp: /Users/apple/Pictures/iPhoto Library//Originals/2008/Nov 16, 2008/IMG_4982.JPG: Input/output error
If the list of files is sufficiently short and you'd like to clean up the problem files in iPhoto, you could, using this error list, search for individual problem images, trash them, then empty the iPhoto Trash.
I believe that if you do this, you've at least cleaned up the mess so that you won't have to worry about corrupt file/error -36 - e.g. now be able to back up files using Finder Copy. I also think this orderly deletion of files in iPhoto is apt to be more reliable for iPhoto; I'm concerned that iPhoto may not be robust enough to recover from source files in its database - <poof> - just disappearing (for the years I've been using iPhoto, it's always seemed fragile).
As suggested in the referenced previous thread, if the drive is going south, it seems like you'd want to stop using it ASAP and safely get your data to a more reliable one - and also further backed up elsewhere.
Anyone dealing with error -36 hassles would likely benefit from any further comments on how best to deal with this calamity. I'd be very interested in hearing from experienced techs on the relationship between -36 errors and drive failure.

    As Niel pointed out, yes.  The disk probably will look like the MBP disk (4) in this screenshot;

  • "Time Machine can't back up - sparsebundle error 1" question

    Hi,
I'm getting the "Time Machine can't back up - sparsebundle error #1" message, and am trying to see if the fix posted below is the answer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2048
So, when I installed Time Capsule, I gave it a password ("network password").
Fairly recently, I renamed the Airport.  Now the Airport disk password and Airport base station password are the same as the network password, and the Airport network password is different.
Is this what the Apple support message I referenced is getting at?  Are these passwords supposed to be the same...  ???
    Thanks for any help,
    reluctantuser

I'm not sure what you mean by "We also used the Time capsule as a hard drive for backing up." after you've already mentioned that you use Time Machine to back up three Macs to the Time Capsule.
Check this Web page for advice on the space issue.

  • Can't back up iPhoto library to external hard drive

Just purchased a new ext. hard drive; when I try to back up my iPhoto library (v. 5.0.4) to it I get a message "can't copy one or more of your items". When I click to continue, it simply stops. I had no trouble backing up iTunes and other files. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Lori;
Thanks to you for your support as well. I have tried dragging the iPhoto Library both directly from the Pictures File in Finder, and from a copy of the iPhoto Library folder on my desktop. I get the same non-result in both cases: "One or more items can't be copied. Do you want to skip them and copy the remaining items?" It doesn't specify what items can't be copied, and when I click yes (to continue) nothing gets copied.
As I said earlier, I successfully backed up my entire iTunes folder with room to spare, so I know the external hard drive is operating properly. Any ideas? Thanks again.

  • I edit my photos in Photoshop, save as jpeg then import back into iPhoto.  But if I add text to an image in Photoshop can't save as jpeg but as psd. Is there any way I can change to jpeg in iPhoto?

I edit my RAW photos in Photoschop CS3, save as jpeg then import back into iPhoto 11.  If I add text in Photoshop I can't save as jpeg but as psd.  Is there any way I can change to jpeg in iPhoto?

    Terence Devlin wrote:
Yes you can. But you need to flatten it as jpeg doesn't support layers.
While the final JPEG can't have layers, it is not necessary to flatten the original Photoshop file to create a JPEG. There are two ways to make a JPEG while not losing the flexibility of preserving layers, and they both flatten on the fly while saving.
I just tried this in Photoshop CS3 myself. When I add a text layer, and choose Save, the Save As dialog box comes up and defaults to PSD as was described. But... that is just the default! Go ahead and choose JPEG from the Format pop-up menu down below the file list. JPEG is in there. So what happens to the layers? Notice when you choose JPEG, the Layers box grays out and the "As A Copy" box grays out and is checked (i.e. you cannot uncheck it). What is going on here is Photoshop will gladly make a JPEG of your layered file, but it will force the JPEG to be a copy, so as to not overwrite the original layered file. This is good, because your Photoshop file with its editable text layer is preserved, and you get a JPEG copy to put in iPhoto.
The second way is, instead of doing Save or Save As, choose File/Save for Web and Devices. This will also give you a JPEG choice, and also create an exported copy. Because this way makes files for the Web, they will be smaller than JPEGs from Save As because they will lack built-in previews (which you don't really need these days) and other extra metadata that take up space.
Either way you get a JPEG you can toss back into iPhoto.

    Only by exporting.
The Export menu in Photoshop CS3 does not have any direct choices for JPEG.

  • Backing up iphoto

I have an extra hard drive (external) and would like to clear out all the photos, or most of them, so I can delete them from my computer ( My laptop is running slowly so I'm hoping this might help) But where can I find the photos in a form that allows me to drag to the other hard drive?
    thanks
    Mimi
    I photo 2.0.1, and Panther.10.3.9

Hi, Mimi. I'm afraid the answer to your question is as straightforward as it seems: If you don't have enough room on your internal drive for your iPhoto Library, and it must reside on an external drive, then the only place to back it up (the whole thing, that is) is on another external hard drive.
A better solution would be to buy a larger hard drive to replace your current internal drive. Then you could keep your primary library on that drive and back it up to your external drive, and just have two drives in play. If you wanted to, you could put your current internal drive into an external enclosure and use it as a spare backup, extra storage space, or whatever.
You can't back an iPhoto Library up piecemeal — it has to be backed up as a single unit if you want it to retain your albums, film rolls, titles, keywords, comments, ratings, etc. You can, of course, back up individual photos or groups of photos on CDs, but you can't reassemble the pieces into a copy of the original iPhoto Library if you want to at a later date.

  • How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data in the packet cannot be read from or written to"?

How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data canny be read from or written to"?

Regarding not being able to open iPhoto.  As a test  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Were you able to create a new library?
If so then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How can you take a photo from one event and put it in another, without dragging to desktop and dragging back into iPhoto and moving it to the event folder I want it in.

As the title says I need help on how to take a photo from one event and put it in another, without dragging to desktop and dragging back into iPhoto and moving it to the event folder I want it in. Right now when I want to move a picture from one event to another I drag it to my desktop then delete it from iPhoto then I drag it back into iPhoto and put where I want it.An example would be taking a photo from the Christmas event and add it to a specific person event.  Can I do that within the events section without all the dragging. Also is there anyway I can remove duplicates from iPhoto without going through each and every file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apple doesn't make it easy to do what you want.  However, here's how I do it.
Select the photo you want to move and create a new Event for it via the Event ➙ Create Event menu option.
In the Event mode select the new Event with the one picture and drag it onto the Event you want to move the photo to.

  • How can I back up only iTunes and iPhoto to an external HDD

How can I back up only iTunes and iPhoto, so I can reformat my computer and restore the files in these two programs?  I have an external, but its not big enough to create a time machine copy of my HDD.  I have an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.  I am also running Windows 8 via Parallels and I would prefer to keep this partition in tact, but if thats not possible I'll re instal that program.
Some how Mackeeper and a couple other shady programs have been installed on my computer and what I want to do is reformat my computer.

You could drag the iPhoto and iTunes folders to the external drive and move them back later.
However, it might be easier to just remove MacKeeper and other adware.
See the post by John Galt in this thread about removing MacKeeper.

  • My computer has some serious problems, my iphoto only shows thumb size pics when I try to open them, i tried to rebuild my files from folders that had the pics in them. originally all the photos has a large delta with a question mark. also I can't back up

my computer has some serious problems, my iphoto only shows  only shows thumb size pics when I try to open them, i tried to rebuild my files from folders that had the pics in them. originally all the photos had a large delta with a question mark. also I can't back up the library file because its not there. I went to time machune and tried to find the file but I can't find it or I am looking in the wrong place. I also lost my Idvd file, only have broken chain showing.

    Details please
What version of iPhoto and of the OS?
i tried to rebuild my files from folders that had the pics in them.
Exactly what did you do and how did you do it? this ay be the cause of your issue but without details we can n=ony guess
my iphoto only shows  only shows thumb size pics when I try to open them,
where do you see htis? In the iPhoto window? what does "try to pen them" exactly mean?
originally all the photos had a large delta with a question mark.
Ok - this usually has a simple solution - do you still have a copy of the library that has this problem?
also I can't back up the library file because its not there.
This makes no sense at all - all of your previous statements indicate that you do have an iPhoto library but have some problems with it
By default your iPHoto library is located in your Pictures folder and is named iPhtoo library - if tha tis not the case the you have moved or renamed it and only you know what you did until you tell us the details
I went to time machune and tried to find the file but I can't find it or I am looking in the wrong place.
Again unless you actually share what and how you are doing thing but continue to simply state abstract problems it is no possible to assist you - details on using Time Machine are here  --  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US   --     and   --    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html   ---
I also lost my Idvd file, only have broken chain showing.
This would be better addressed in the iDVD forum - but again unlesss yu share detailed information no one can assist
