Can't back up my phone on iCloud

I have an iPhone 4S and tried to back up my phone on iCloud and it said that I didn’t have enough storage. Very odd because I was able to do so on 9/17/14 without any problem. It was only after the system update that I had this issue (IOS 8.1). I deleted a bunch of photos and changed the setting so that my photos and contact would be the only thing backing up to the iCloud. NOPE… That didn’t help.
Call Apple support… Spent close to an hour with them which included a lot of waiting and guess what? That didn’t help. Their suggestion was to purchase more space on the iCloud. They made it feel like it was my fault. I don't understand how because I had less photos and no apps being stored this time around and it still won't back up. Explain that Apple...Wait, you can't. Your solution is to by more storage space.
I didn’t do anything different or add anything new to my phone since the last back up. The only thing I did was update to IOS 8.1. Someone please help… I need to back up my phone because I was thinking about getting a new iPhone 6 Plus. But am now second guessing that… Since Apple can’t even figure out what is going on.

As you are clearly aware, it is important for you to have backups of your important data, including all of these photos you are currently keeping on your iPhone. While it is possible to use iTunes or iCloud to do backups of your iPhone, the problem becomes how to access those backups if you have deleted the photos from your iPhone. Once you have done the backup and then removed the photos from the iPhone, the only way to access the photos is by restoring the backups to the phone. If you want to easily access the photos once they are off of the iPhone, another approach to this would be to import your photos from the iPhone into an application on your Mac, such as iPhoto. To learn how to do this, use the steps in this article -

Once those photos are on your computer, it is still important to back up those photos to somewhere else, so you can be sure of their safety before removing them from the iPhone. Your Mac’s Time Machine application is one method of doing this -

Not really necessary to go into DFU mode when the device is just reporting it is in recovery mode if it is saying connect to iTunes. Connect to iTunes and do a restore. See this support document if you have any issues. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

If you go in your phone to Settings, Icloud, photo stream, and turn the selection on, your phone will send your photos to your desktop computer. You have to install and turn on the ICloud panel on your home computer, and also toggle on, photo stream, it will create a folder in My Pictures called My Photo Stream. Just copy and save this folder somewhere else on your computer, or your external hard drive, then continue to copy and paste your new photos into this folder from time to time. Then you will have backups in two places..

1. What format is the external drive? It sounds like it's ina format that Macs can't write to. Is it a NAS or NTFS?
2. Easiest thing: just move your iPhoto Library to the external
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Can you clarify your problem? Are you having trouble restoring your new iPhone from a previous phone's backup? Or are you having trouble logging into iMessage?

You can look for it.
If you find it, you will have it back.
If you had find my iphone activated on the iphone BEFORE it was lost, then you may be able to track it.

So I appear to be right.. you cannot back up to the internal storage, only to an inserted microSD card..
Anyone care to screen capture a backup on the internal storage? I'm interested to know if anyone can get it working because as I expected, it doesn't work on mine..

I don't know how to change the location of the backup files, but on my n900 it uses the internal memory.
I have not used a microSD card on my N900 so far, maybe it selects the location when the backup program is used for the first time?
The problem with the "no memory card inserted" looks like a bug though.

I have an IPhone 5. There is 17.01 GB of other memory being taken up. I've been told my memory has been corrupted and I need to restore my phone to a new IPhone. If I do this, will I lose everything on my phone? I backed up my phone in iCloud yesterday.

Yes, when you restore as new everything will be wipe from your phone.
You will need to sync with itunes http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1386 to get back your apps/music and contacts IF you sync with a program in itunes.
I suggest you import your pics to your computer http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 then after you restore your phone, you can sync it back to your phone.

How do I get my contacts back on my phone from iCloud?

I recently went on vacation and for some reason, my contacts got wiped out. No clue why, but I got on iCloud.com and found that all of my contacts are still there. I can't restore my phone because I've never synced it to a computer and I know that once I do, the back up that will be on my computer to use for the restore is how my phone is now, with the very few contacts I put back in. Instead of putting them all back in manually, how do I get the contacts on my phone from iCloud.

Not syncing/backing up the device is simply not smart.
Restoring the device is unlikely to have any affect on the device or the contacts.
Settings > iCloud > Contacts, turn it on.
If it is already on, open the Contacts app and select the Groups option in the upper left corner. Select the iCloud account and then Done. All the contacts should now appear.
