Can't back up to computer disk space issues

I am getting a message while trying to back up my iPhone 5s that says "this iPhone can't be back-up because there is not enough space on this computer."  This would be easy to fix if it were true and it isn't.  I have 255 gigs of free space on this computer.  I then tried backing up to the cloud and still got the same message.  Any thoughts on this?
I am using a macbook pro 2011 version running Yosemite.   iTunes has been updated and so has the iPhone.
Not sure what the issue could be.

Hello Joebrummer,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. I understand that you are receiving an error message when attempting to backup your iPhone 5s. It sounds like you have more than enough free space available, so let’s try troubleshooting this issue with the following article:

  • Disk Space Issues

Does anyone out there have best practice insights on how to deal with disk space issues on the database server?  Can we copy the files onto different drives and then rename the drives?  Will everything with the BPC application sync up again?
Is there anything tricky in dealing with this issue?
    Thank you,
    Grant

    Hi Grant,
I once had to move the SQL database files from one drive to another. The only thing that I did was 'Detach the SQL database' in Enterprise Manager, move the files and 'Attach these files again. Everything else was automatically changed.
You can attach/detach using sql statements or using the graphicall user interface from SQL.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 DP - Reserve Disk Space issue

    Hi Team,
Issue with SCCM 2012 DP. Reserve Disk space issue.
During DP installation I have given 100000 MB as Reserve disk space, now my DP Share drive reached below 97 GB of free space, now I’m unable to distribute packages to the DP.
Below is the error Message in Smsdpprov.log
Failed to find space for 105874160 bytes.
    Solution tried:
Tried changing the reserve disk space value in Registry (HKLM- Software – Microsoft – SMS- DP- ReservedDiskSpace),
But the value is getting auto reset to old value after a restart.
Is there any way where I could change the Reserve disk space without reinstalling the DP Role?

    Hi,
    >>Is there any way where I could change the Reserve disk space without reinstalling the DP Role?
We need to edit the reserved free space in SQL database. But this is not supported by Microsoft.
    Steps:
    1) Run SQL query:
    select SCR.ID, SCR.Name,SC.NalPath, SCR.Value3 from sc_sysresuse_property SCR join sc_sysresuse SC on SCR.SysResUseID = SC.ID where SCR.name = 'MinFreeSpace' and SC.NALPath like '%<DP_Name>%' and SC.RoleTypeID = 3
Note: you need to replace the <DP_Name> with your actual remote DP server name.
    2) Use the returned ID in step 1). Run the below query to update the 'MinFreeSpace' value.
update sc_sysresuse_property set value3 = 'set desired value in MB' where name = 'MinFreeSpace' and ID = 'ID retained in previous select query'
    Example:
    update sc_sysresuse_property set value3 =20480  where name = 'MinFreeSpace' and ID = 75340198761234567
    3) In the next package content update cycle, the reserveddiskspace registry value (under HKLM\software\Microsoft\SMS\DP) will be changed
    to 20480.
Or you can restart the SMS_SITE_Component_Manager service on SCCM site server
to update the “reserved free space” value on remote DP.
    Best Regards,
    Joyce

  • How can I find out how much disk space I have free?

I want to download a large file from the internet (22.21 GB). I have deleted everything on my computer that I don't think is necessary to keep, but how do I find out exactly how much disk space my computer has free so I can download?

    Hello again Rolanda,
Barry is right on the money here ( Hello Barry! )
You need to delete / remove some files off that computer as soon as possible. Start with things you never use. Then onto things that can easily be replaced.
I would not even attempt to copy to CD's until you have at least 5 or 6 GB free!
Post back if you need more.
    Regards

  • Cannot Back-Up Catalogue-Low Disk Space

Elements 9. I get a low disk space-free up space message. I have had this happen enough to know that it is a problem with my "C" Drive, not my destination drive with 3TB. My "C" drive is 2TB and I have lots of media. I would like to know how I transfer all my media to an external drive and easily link the catalogue with the new drive without major problems. I prefer not to manually reconnect 25,000 files!!
    Thanks for your help!

Thanks, but right now I can't do a back-up because I keep getting an error message that my drive is too full, and it must mean my C drive because my external has plenty of room.
Do you get the message when in editor, in organizer or both ?
    Which operating system ? I suppose Windows : XP, Vista or Win 7 32 or 64bits ?
From the explorer, when you right click on C: to show properties, how much free space is shown ?
Now, when in the editor, look at the preferences/ performance. What is shown in the scratch disk box for C: ?
Not sure I am able to guide you from there, but I am sure Windows experts can help you with that info.
Yes, no problem about your second question : moving from within the organizer in folder view keeps the right drive/path correctly.
Another question : what is PGT  ?

  • Time Machine won't create diff. back-ups despite sufficient disk space

    Hi,
I have one full back up on my external HDD, and several differential back ups. However, despite there being over 80GB left on my external HDD, Time Machine will fail to complete further differential back ups when I disconnect my external HDD and then reconnect (say a week later or so). Time Machine seems to want to create another full backup when I reconnect my external HDD (or it seems this way). My questions are: why won't Time Machine create further differential backups based on my original full backup when I reconnect my external HDD and/or can I change a setting so that TM will create ONLY differential backups (given that one full back up already exists)?
    Advice appreciated,
    SM

I should add that when TM attempts to create another backup after I reconnect my external HDD, it fails, stating 'not enough disk space' - which is why I assume it's attempting another full backup. Cheers, SM.

  • Can i back my entire computer up to my server and if so how?

I would like this to be done similar to the way time capsule works. I was wondering if it is even possible to back the whole computer up to the server

Your question is short on details so I'm going to make some assumptions.
If you're asking "Can I assign Time Machine to back-up to shared storage hosted on OS X Server?" then the simple answer is yes. Time Machine supports this functionality and will recognize shares and the need for a name and password and will mount the share and back-up to it automatically.
Shares need to be marked as being Time Machine available in OS X Server so not all shares are automatically available. The only big gotcha is that Time Machine usually sees the entire volume as the available size and doesn't see user limits or quotas without jumping through some hoops. I would only recommend this practice used as as one time back-up (since your question seems to ask about a single back-up) or against actual shared partitions ensure proper compliance to server storage limitations.
    HTH,
    =Tod
PS This is really an OS X Server question rather than an Xserve specific question and there is a better forum for general Server questions.

  • Can I back-up my computer with TM to multiple hard drives?

I have one internal hard drive I want to back-up using Time Machine. I also have two external hard drives. Can I use Time Machine to back-up my computer to both externals, or is Time Machine only capable of using one external HD for the back-ups?

TM can only have one backup drive at a time. you can switch TM drives in system preferences->TM and alternate backups between two drives. or you can use a different backup solution for your secondary backup. see this post for options

  • MacBook Pro Disk Space Issues & Recommendations

I am looking for recommendations on how to free up disk space.  I have a 250GB MacBook Pro-2013.  I have a 2TB Time Machine back-up hard drive.  Photos take up 50GB, videos 60GB, music 30GB.  My Time Machine backs up my computer each time it is plugged into an adapter and on my home network.  Is this too often?  Should I move all my photos and videos  of family to the cloud?  Do I need another external hard drive to store photos, videos and music on?  I have emptied trash, deleted unused apps, deleted old documents and deleted old iMessages.  Thank you for your help!

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • PBG4 with 'missing / dissapearing' disk space issue

My wife's powerbook appears to have 'missing' hard disk space and I can't figure out why. Here is the information from System Profiler about her only hard drive in the computer.
    Capacity: 74.41 GB
    Available: 6.91 GB
    Writable: Yes
    File System: Journaled HFS+
The issue is that when I click on her hard drive icon in the Finder view I see 4 items:
    - Applications (4.92 GB)
    - Library (2.45 GB)
    - System (1.07 GB)
    - Users (24.17 GB)
This totals 32.61 GB of used disk space
The hard drive is 74.41 GB
So I should have 41.80 GB of free space
Why do I only have 6.91 GB?
Where is the other 34.89 GB?
I have run disk utilities and repaired permissions. I have also run fsck by booting while holding apple-S. I've looked at the logs in /var/logs and nothing is bigger than 2MB.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

We upgraded the OS to 10.5 and the issue is gone.

  • Free disk space issue after iOS5

I have an iPad 1 16GB and after I updated to iOS5 the free disc space reduced so that now I have only 3GB free. 10,6GB is shown as "other". Can anybody tell me what this is and how I can increase the free disk space?

It shouldn't be that large unless, for example, you've got lots of videos in third-party video apps (or other third-party apps with large content) - it's usually caused by corrupt files. The only way the I know of reducing the size of 'other' is to restore back to factory defaults, and you could then try restoring to your backup which hopefully won't copy the 'other' back (or you might have to just sync content back and not restore to your backup).

  • Annoying Disk space issue in OS Lion!

    Hi everyone,
I dont know why after upgrading to OS Lion from Snow Leopard, my Mac keeps alerting me "There is no start-up disk space". No matter how much I try to delete, the free disk space does not go up (sometime, it even went down on free disc space). The available space is about 500 MB at the moment. What do I need to do now? I have tried entering a command into Termino to turn the Timemachine off (got it from someone having the same issue in this forum) but it does not seem to work.
The computer is getting slow and laggy now, which is really annoying. Before, I used to have at least 10Gb free, not sure why it's nearly zero now.
    Thanks everyone,

Lion. And if it created a Recovery partiton, that requires 13GB.
20% free space is more accurate and reasonable. Below that, free space is also too highly fragmented to operate properly and be able to save changes, create files.
Install Lion again on a new external drive if you don't have a recovery partition now, or just to test with .
Boot Command-R Recovery Mode and use Disk Utility to repair your drive, restore your system to a backup, inspect the health of your drive partitions.
OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery
Check partition table health in Lion's Disk Utility
Manage all partitions with Disk Utility in OS X
    Managing Lion restore drive MacFixIt
you might also want to not use your system until it is healthy, but then you may want to unhide your ~/Library and use Lion Cache Cleaner to remove and rebuild cache from browsers and others.
    - a clean install insures fewer problems and still will import or migrate your old system files back.

  • Serious hard disk space issue (9.2 on XP Professional, 56 GB not enough)

    Hello,
I installed Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 on HP Pavilion running Windows XP Professional (Pentium 4).
Following are the numbers about disk space:
Space before starting Installation: 56.8 GB
Universal Installer indicated Enterprise Edition needs 2.86 GB and I selected General purpose database.
Universal Installer in summary before starting installation shows:
    Space requirements as
    C:\Required 2.57 (includes 90 MB temporary): Available 56.82GB
After completion of installation: I had hard disk space available as 32.6 GB (Approximately 25 GB space was taken)
Within couple of hours hard disk space dropped to 12 GB
and some thing kept taking the hard disk space.
Where is the problem? Oracle? XP? HP?
After uninstall Oracle and deleting Oracle home space is 56.5
Am I doing some thing wrong?
Earlier I tried the same on XP home edition and within couple of hours I ran out of space on same computer after installing Oracle 9.2
    Any pointers, help greatly appreciated.

  • Need help with Low disk space issue and blue screen

Hi Everyone, just seen a message stating a low disk space on my Mac pro bought last November and tried plugging in an external hard drive to remove some pictures to free up some space but it seems that the computer did not have enough space left to start up and run the hard drive. I then tried to restart and ended up with a blue screen and have no knowledge now how to fix this problem. I phoned support but they say I have no technical support left but do have warranty and I would need to either try with the community here or take the unit to an apple store for an appointment. The store is an 1 and 1/2 from me and I really want o see if there is another fix that could allow me to start again then remove some files and then add external drive to remove more. I was blown away at the low amount of storage.....looked for the icloud option last night to upload there as i was told about this by a UK client of mine and now see it is not up and running. Any advice or help by the communtiy would be greatly appreciated as this is my business and travelling laptop. Cheers, Dean <")))><

    Great to hear Dean, thanks!
Further notes: OSX needs about 15% or 10GB Free space minimum, but will run mucch faster/safer with 30-40% or 50GB of Free Space... Free Space is no longer ours to use.
Another tool to help clear up assorted things is Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

    Hi,
I have a 2.33GHz Mac Book Pro and a seagate 500GB firewire drive. All my imported video clips are located on the external drive. I have created the project on the external drive as well. My inbuilt hard disk is loaded up with music snaps and other office data.. and i have successfully created a imovie project. i have about 20 GB of free space and the project is 2.5 hours long. i am not able to render the movie and send it to iDVD as my hard disk runs out of space. is there any way that the rendering can be done on the external drive as well?

    no.
temp-files are always stored on the same drive/partition where the OS-in-use is located.
you could install a MacOs on your ext. HDD and launch from there..
or, perhaps easier to realize, de-locate your Libs (iPhoto, iTunes) to an ext. HDD to have more free disk space on your internal ... read the support pages how to accomplish that!
