Can't backup in time machine or upgrade to Maverick or Yosemite, can I still transfer via thunderbolt?

I have a macbook pro 17 inch, Mid 2010 OSX 10.8.5. I currently have no back up as both my previous seagate and now my Lacie external drives won't back it up with the time machine. I get a box stating an error occurred and it quits after about 10GBs. In addition, the laptop fails to install Maverick and Yosemite when I have attempted to install them. For work I have just got a 15 inch Macbook Pro Retina. I obviously need all the data and files from my old laptop, if I were to transfer all the programs etc, would it likely transfer the problem that stops my computer from backing up? or is it more likely a hard drive problem and won't affect the new laptop?
I have followed trouble shoot and looked at previous posts but haven't been able to find a solution. Also I have gone on disk utility and verified the disk and all is fine there, so I am unsure what the problem is.
Ideally I can get working on the new 15" soon but I don't want to transfer over any problems.
Thanks

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.

Can't backup with Time Machine suddenly. Message says "back up disk image ...'/Volume/... /myMacname.sparsebundle' is already in use".
I have no idea what this means. Can someone please help? Please note that I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion.
    Thanks.

Been having the same problem on mountain lion
Most forums say you must disconnect the users in AirPort Utility, but v6.1 no longer has this feature
So simply open “Finder” on the left under “Devices” you should see your “Time Capsule”. If not then it should be under “Shared”. Click on it and then select “Disconnect”. Then simply reconnect and that should be it
You can also restart the Time Capsule just by using Airport Utility.
Open Airport Utility and select the Time Capsule. Then up on the top bar select Base Station and click on Restart
Mine is now all working again

  • HT3275 can't backup with time machine

I can't backup with time machine and I do not receive any errors, time machine just stays in the 'looking for backup disk' mode and will not go any further. I went as far as buying a new usb backup disk to replace the old one and still the same issue occurs.  I've tried using different usb ports on my mb pro and that doesn't work. No amount of restarting, ejecting discs or checking preferences helps.  Disk utility states the drive is fine (even the new one), the permissions or sharing haven't changed.
My system is up to date with the latest updates, and this all just happened out of the blue one day.  I suppose I could do a system restore but I'm afraid of losing my data; and I'm not 100% sure how to do that.
    I'm running OSX 10.8.2, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB memory

There is good advice available about Time Machine.   Go to Pondini's paper(s)  before you do anything so drastic as a system restore.

  • I Can't Backup to time machine through my airport extreme.

I Have recently paritioned by backup disks into two separate partitions and i now have the nice view of time machine because i switched to the GUID format. However, now i cannot backup to time machine through my airport extreme. Please help, it is very frustrating.

No you can't and the reason is Apple blocked the ability for Time Machine to backup over WIFI to a NAS connected to the AEBS. Though I was able to use iTimeMachine to enable the feature prior to the recent Leopard update 10.5.2 which seems to have closed this ability once again. Apple's comment to me was to buy Time Capsule claiming the feature was never supported over WIFI with the AEBS even though their advertising just prior to Leopard's release stated differently. A lot of us on this forum paid for an AEBS and NAS drive based on Apple's own advertising regarding a feature they later blocked/removed and are extremely upset with the way the issue seems to be ignored by Apple support who pretend there was never an issue to begin with.

  • Can I backup with Time machine and continue to use my mac?

Hi I backed up my complete system with time machine and left the system alone. My question is when I do future backups can I continue to use the computer whilst the backup is happening or should I leave it alone whilst the backup is happening?
    Thanks!

The automatic backups aren't nearly as noticeable as the initial backup. Time Machine is designed to do its thing politely in the background while you use your computer. I rarely even notice it. However, if you are using resource intensive apps you might want to turn off Time Machine in System Preferences until your are finished so your apps have access to all available horsepower.

  • Can't Backup to Time Machine to Local Snapshot

Before Mavericks I could Backup Now to Mobile Backups and Enter Time Machine.  Now the only way I can do both is when I am attached to my Time Machine back up disk.  So with this "feature" the only way I can restore something from the Mobile Backups is to be connected to the backup disk.
Is this a bug?  Is it a new "feature?"  And if so why?
Also the lock on the Time Machine preferences has disappeared.  Why?

Sorry for late reply, It is definitely a bug because if you cant restore from mobile backups when external drive is not available it totally defeats the point of having local snapshot. At first I thought my time machine was bugged but I was wrong, I tried restoring my Macbook pro retina, Macbook air all of them have the same problem, I filed a bug report 4 months ago, apple still didnt fix it.
It is surprising to see that such a key component of time machine is broken and they cant even be bothered to fix it.
Are you seeing this message when you try to enter time machine ? : Your Time Machine backup disk can’t be found.

  • Can't Backup with Time Machine under Mac OS X 10.6.6

Ever since I updated my Late 2009 Core i5 iMac with the 10.6.6 Combined Update, I can't backup my computer with Time Machine, either the Automatic Backup or the Backup Now command.
After backing up 20 MB or so, I get a message that the backup was interrupted because of disk problems, presumably the Time Machine external disk. I get the message to retry later and, if difficulties persist, to use the Apple Disk Utility to correct the problem. I followed the advice to no avail, retrying later, erasing the Time Machine hard disk and, the last time, erasing the Time Machine hard disk followed by a new partition creation.
As I filed a bug report for the Time Machine Back up command when Apple was developping Mac OS X 10.6.5, I am inclined to believe that the previous beta software bug was re-introduced by the 10.6.6 update.
I will use the Disk Utility on the Macintosh HD to check whether it would solve anything. Repairing the permissions and checking for disk problems. If the problem isn't corrected, I will submit a bug report.

    Update:
It was the Macintosh HD which was corrupt, reporting 1 fewer folder and 1 more file than it should have. The solution was to start the iMac with the Mac OS X Install DVD, use Disk Utility to repair the Macintosh HD, and back up the computer with Time Machine.
The Macintosh HD became corrupt while installing the Mac OS X 10.6.6 Combined Update, a not so infrequent problem I am told.
In this instance, Time Machine realized the corruption problem, warned me, and stopped the back up before the records were falsified. Great!
Time Machine performed as expected, but its warning should have identified which hard disk was corrupt, saving me the confusion with the Time Machine external hard drive. Had Time Machine warning clearly identified the corrupt drive, I wouldn't have erased my Time Machine backup.
That's one point to improve with Lion.

  • Can't back up Time Machine since upgrade to Mountain Lion

When auto back up would be starting, I get an error message "Can't access the backup disk...TIme Capsul" (OSSStatus error 89.)
None of the usual "go to settings" etc. are leading me anywhere useful.
Do I need a patch to make Time Machine/Time Capsule compatible with Mountain Lion?
Di I need to use iCloud as my back up method? (Have not been using iCloud for anything so far).

Time Machine and the Time Capsule is compatible with Mountain Lion.  Look in Time Machine Troubleshooting for a solution.

  • Backup with time machine. external disk is now full and can't reopened!

Last weekend I tried to do my first backup with the time machine software. For this purpose, I used a external disk containing different kind of documents, pictures and songs. This external disk was used before on a HP (software: windows vista). Unfortunately, during the backup process, I disrupeted the connection and the backup couln't finished. Now, my macbook pro can't recognise the external disk and also on my old HP the external disk is not recognised and no docment can't be opend!! When I look at the properties of this disk, then I see that the external disk is almost full. Does this cause all the problem?
How do I proceed in order to get back all my documents on this disk?

You and your wife share one drive for backup?  Do you backup over wifi or move it around?
Time machine is generally a rock solid tool but you can use it in ways that make it unstable.  I have dedicated drives on 3 macs which run very solid.  I also have one drive on a airport extreme base station (older model which is not supported but does work) that I use with a macbook air.  The macbook air wifi based backup runs into problems a few times a year.  One of my iMacs with a dedicated drive also runs into problems but only when the drive is nearly full.
It sounds like your drive is nearly full and your using multiple notebooks and possibily wifi......If this is the case, you may be way less frustrated by buying dedicated drives sufficiently big for each computer.  That is the experience I can share with you.
    Good luck.

  • Can't backup using time machine anymore

so my Mac's hard drive recently crashed and had to be replaced. No big deal as I have 2 backups (1 on my Time Capsule, and one via a plug in hard drive I named Time Machine) when I got the new hard drive I restored it from the Time Capsule and everything was perfectly fine, except that it wouldn't backup anymore. Normally it would automatically backup every hour, but a week went by and I got the ! notifcation in the status bar, 2 weeks went by and even manually getting it to backup wouldn't allow me to back up anymore so I had to start a whole new backup on the Time Capsule before it would finally start backing up again. Well I finally got around to backing up on the Time MAchine again and same problem, it won't let me manually backup it just keeps searchign an searching and seraching for the backup disc. What can I do to get it to start backing up again? I figured since it was restored FROM a backup that it could just go back to backing up on those smae discs again, but it doesn't seem to.

Pondini addressed this issue (and many others) in his excellent site on Time Machine. See pondini.org, and specifically http://pondini.org/TM/19.html ("I got a new Mac, or a new or erased internal HD -- now what?").

  • Can I Backup My Time Machine Backups?

I am currently using Time Machine to archive my iMac to a 1TB USB drive. The Backups.backupdb folder is just part of the disk contents but currently comes in at over 500GB and contains archived data back to May 2009.
Because I was in need of a little more disk space and was able to get a brand new DLINK DNS-323 NAS enclosure for 30% of retail at a chain's liquidation sale, I have just set up a small NAS with two, 2TB drives (formatted as two separate volumes, without RAID and using ext3). I understand the DLINK NAS uses SMB.
*My question is this: If I copied the Backups.backupdb folder to the network drive, would I be able to successfully recover the Backups.backupdb folder and its contents should my 1TB disk ever fail?*
My vision is to do nightly backups of my 1TB drive to the network drive, thus providing additional data protection. Should my 1TB USB fail, I would then copy all contents (including the Backups.backupdb folder) from the network drive to a new USB or Firewire drive and have Time Machine continue on as if nothing happened and if necessary, restore files from its archive.
Doing things this way would provide the additional data security I desire, while giving me access to the Time Machine archives when I needed them.
I am on the first day of a full-function trial of Chronosync, so using another archiving application is within the realm of possibility. However, because of the amount of archived data currently held in Time Machine (that and I like the way TM looks and feels, for the most part) I don't want to throw away everything and start my archives all over from today as "day 1".
Thank you very much in advance for your input.

I'm sure it's possible to make this work, but you shouldn't make this work. Backing up a backup is not a good idea, since any problems with the original backup will be propagated into the "backup backup". Instead, make a fully independent backup with different software. That way, if you one day find that you need your backups, but the TM backup is corrupt for some reason (not implying that's normal), you'll still have a second independent backup. If it's just a copy of a corrupt TM backup, it won't help you much.

  • Can't Backup to Time machine

I had to have the old hard drive replaced on my macbook pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 operating system.   It was replaced at the apple store.  I brought it home and yesterday restored it from the last time machine backup of my old hard drive which was Friday.  That appears to be the only backup on the external hard drive I've been using with Time machine.   Today, it gets an error message.
Time Machine could not complete the backup.   This backup is too large for the backup disk...etc.
It is almost like it is trying to completely back up the new hard drive even though it was just restored from it.  Is it because it thinks it is a different drive or something because it is a new hard drive?
What do I do?  I don't want to delete the one good backup that I have but, I want to be able to use time machine to back anything up.
BTW, have called Apple Support who may be looking into the issue....haven't heard back yet.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm somewhat sure that TM sees the new HD as an entirely different computer, so there's not enough room foro the old backup and the new one. If you erase the external HD, TM will probably work just fine.
I would not recommend using TM as your only backup. It takes every file on your had and makes one big giant file out of it. One thing goes wrong with the backup file, and your backup is gone.
Consider another external HD that you use something like SuperDuper or CarbobCopyCloner to manually make another backup every so often in addition to the TM backup that happens automagically. You may also consider an online backup like Carbonite or CrashPlan. Those are automated and provide the added security of an off site backup.

  • Can't backup with Time Machine

So I have been trying to backup to a WD My Passport Edge 500 GB drive.  Never used Time Machine before, but since the OS needs to be updated, I figured now would be the perfect time to start backing up.  Have the install disk ready for Snow Leopard, but want to be sure everything is backed up in case of failure.
I set the drive to backup to.  It made it to almost 2 GB of almost 250 GB and it stopped, gave an error of Time Machine Error: Unable to complete backup.  An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.
