Can't backup iphone or ipad.

i tried everything i have read in this forum & elsewhere - deleted backups, rename the pref file, even restoring the iphone (and all my app info were lost). both the iphone & ipad sync okay but they just won't bakcup (either hangs or error message). the only thing i have not done is to reinstall iTunes. will reinstalling iTunes wipe out my current music, apps, contacts, etc?
Any help will be appreciated as without being able to backup, I can't install any new iOS updates.

You have a couple of options here. First you can use this article to manage your iCloud storage:

You can manage the storage either from your device, or from a computer. Whichever is more convenient for you.
You can also backup your device to iTunes for a local backup if you want.

Since it sounds like you have done all the troublehsooting in the article, so I would use the info at the bottom of it to contact support for the device:

Ok, new to this, sorry for long title, thought I was in text/message part. I have two iPhones, and iPad, and a MacBook Pro. Invoking messaging and receiving on two iPhones and an iPad was cute in the beginning but now it's beyond useful. i've solved the problem on iPhones just by turning off messaging, but find nothing in settings to turn off messaging on the MacBook Pro. I'm assuming that turning off messaging on my phones reverts to SMS tho' not sure what Apple uses if not SMS.
I do not want iPhone messages being received on my MacBook Pro. How do I de-authorize, can't seem to find anything in settings and don't want to delete MESSAGE.APP as who knows if I want it in future.

The iOS Messages app send either iMessages or SMS depending on the receiver.
If it is Off then you can't send SMS either.
Turn Messages back On in the iPhone.
Go to Setting > Messages > Send and Receive and delete the Apple ID (And any other email) you listed for iMessages
You will get a warning alert that the ID will be deleted across all devices (and it included Messages on the Mac)
The Messages app on the Mac can have iMessages turned Off.
Two ways to do this.
Simplest is to go to Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts and Untick the Enable this Account Box.
The second is to use the Sign Out Button (in OS X 10.8.2 which has updated Messages to version 7.0.1)
The Second logs you out and removes the Apple ID from the iMessages Account settings.

Can you connect iPhone and iPad to iTunes at same time?

Just received my new iPad2 and it will not show up in iTunes. I have my iPhone connected for a long time, but even if I disconnect it the iPad does not show up.
Any Ideas?

What if you manually quit iTunes?
I can see why iTunes would not want you to try to sync two devices at the same time, but I don't see why both can't be attached. I guess that's just how they designed it. Probabaly makes sense. But if you quit out of iTunes (and iPhoto if that's running too), then I bet both devices would take a charge at the same time.
By the way, I set my iPhone and iPad to NOT sync automatically - so they don't cause iTunes to launch when attached.

I have searched the data base for answers, but none provided a workable solution. What I am having an issue with is having data pushed (through iCloud) between one device over to the other. From iPhone to iPad and vice versa. In particular, when I take a photo or video I am looking for it to appear on the "other" device. I followed all the instructions and all my settings are correct. I even followed recommendations from this forum about resetting the devices, but I still have no result. What anI doing wrong? Is my apple ID bad? If yest how can I check it? I a mable to sign into iCloud with my OD so I suspect it is correct.

I don't use iCloud for other stuff, but I do use photo stream and it works quite well. Take a photo on my iPad and as soon as my Touch is on wifi, the photo will show up.
never tried it with videos but the same premise should apply

I'd like to backup my new iPad to my PowerMac G5 running under Leopard.
However, the latest iTunes version compatible with Leopard is iTunes 10.6.3 which seems not to recognize the iPad: No device shows in the Devices pane of iTunes Preferences window ...
I've read here and there that the minimum Mac requirements are Snow Leopard / Intel and iTune 11.
Is there a 3rd party app that could help and that would not relie on iTunes.

Use iCloud to backup the iPad. Many users don't use their iPads with iTunes at all anymore. Personally, I would never rely only on iCloud, but I would guess that millions of iOS users are now using only iCloud and not backing up with iTunes at all.

This worked for me:
1 Go to the finder menu bar at the top of the screen
2Click go
3 click applications
4 go down to iTunes and right click on Show Package Contents
5 open contents folder then go to mac os folder
6 open the terminal marked iTunes in that folder
This should force it to open and function enough, it will not allow importing of music from a desk top

I am a Windows 7/64 user. I have an iPhone 4 and am thinking of buying an iPad, cheaper than a whole new Mac. I regarded the iPad as a small computer, and thought that one might use it to make backups of the iPhone and download eg films or other stuff from it. Now a friend told me that it is not even possible to connect the two devices to one another and that any interaction between the two would have to go through a computer. So what is the use of the iPad, when it is no more than a heavy and clumsy iPhone?

I do not fully understand all of the ins and outs of iCloud either. I use iCloud in very "limited doses". The greatest feature of iCloud - IMO - is that you can download purchased content again at no charge as long as you use the same Apple ID. There are some limitations based on where you live - but in the U.S - all of this is available to you.
I also use iCloud to back up my Pages documents and currently only the Apple iWorks suite of apps, pages, Numbers and Keynote, can make use of this feature of iCloud - As far as I know. The changes that I make on the documents will sync to my iPod Touch and I can download the documents from my iCloud.com account in order to work on them on my Mac. Revise them on the Mac, upload to my account again - and they appear on the iPad and the Touch with revisions in place.
iCloud is still in its infancy, and even if it was "foolproof" or as foolproof as anything can be, I would never count on the cloud only to store my important files. I still backup to iTunes on my Mac and I backup my Mac with Time Machine. The use of iTunes is simply the vehicle through which all of your purchased content can be transferred to your computer for safe keeping. iTunes will store your media, apps and photos - and the backup process using iTunes - provides a way to save your settings, app data, camera roll photos, bookmarks, - in essence - the "stuff" that your apps produce - if that makes sense to you.
Read this to learn more about iCloud. This is covers everything from soup to nuts. The articles contain links to other articles with more information as well. You may even want to peruse the iCloud forum for more information.

It used to work fine tethering the ipad to the iphone by turning on personal hotspot on the iphone and finding it with the ipad when away from wifi.
Now, it appears normal and reports a connection to the hot spot, and the ipad displays the little chain icon to show it is connected to the iphone, but I can't get a page to load. It eventually times out.
I have tested tethering using both wifi and 3G and it doesn't work, but both gadgets work fine withthe internet on their own, and the iphone's 3G also works fine on its own. I have also tested in different locations with the same result. I am nowhere near my data limit for my tariff.
Somehow it no longer works.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Maybe you should go Discussion-Apple to look for what is iTunes user directions about how to backup your iphone.
Other than there are also a tool called Contacts Tool search iphone applications,and it will help u a lot if u want to transfer the contacts to computer.Like Out2003 or Outlook2007...

ITunes 10 Can't backup iphone 4

iPhone was set up at a Verizon store and not on my computer. I need to update the operating system. First I want to backup the existing phone. When I plug the phone in iTunes says "This computer has previously been synced with an iPhone or another iOS device.
Set Up as new phone.
Restore from the backup of (some other person)
I figure I have to set it up as a new phone, but I want to back it up first.
I tried right-clicking and option clicking the device in the left side of iTunes but there was no backup option. I tried the option

What files? How are you downloading this update and where are these "broken files" you mention?
To install iTunes 10.5.2 you only need to click on Help/Check for Updates within iTunes. The download will be handled by iTunes (effectively) without any intervention from you. There should be nothing for you to unzip.

Please also check, if the appointments you already have entered on one device are stored in a iCloud calendar or only local or in another account. Therefor just open the calendar app, then open an existing appointment, click on "Calendar" and then check, if it is really an iCloud calendar where the appointment is stored.

Can't use iphone AND ipad

So I just figured out how to check out and download ebooks/audiobooks from the library to my iphone. Very cool indeed and works well on the iphone, however I can't get the same access on my ipad. I have an Adobe ID. In the overdrive app, I have spefied that the ipad is authorized as well so I don't understand why the books I checked out don't show up there. Also, I downloaded and authorized, the Adobe Digital Editions app for my Macbook and it doesn't see any of my books either. What is the point of an Adobe ID if it doesn't store and allow me access to the media I needed the login for in the first place????

I'm still seeing an underlying thread of what I think is a
misunderstanding.....
What requires a sign-in with your Adobe ID? Access to ebooks on the iPad
and iPhone? I'm not aware of this, as Apple has developed the applications
for epublications that are working on those devices. So - are you saying
something else?
Your MAC applications will work well - they do for others who use the
ADE/MAC applications, so I have to ask you how you've been trying to use
the application, and whether it's set up properly (no offense - it's just
not clear what you've done so we'd be able to give you some advice on what
to do next). You would use ADE on the MAC the same way you would use it on
a PC: start the application and go from there. When you do transfers from
ebook sites (libraries, ebookstores, etc.), the ebooks should be placed in
your ADE library on the MAC. If this is what you do and nothing is
transferred, check the security settings to make sure that your operating
system is going to let file transfers from that site through the
firewall.... I am using PC terms because I'm not a really good MAC guy, so
pardon me for being a bit 'off' on this point.
Amazon has chosen to implement their Kindle using significantly different
methods from others, and tying the Kindle to the Amazon site for ebook
purchases. Some libraries - not all - use features in the Overdrive
software that will interact directly with the Kindle, but many do not. You
can try talking with your library's technical support function to find out
whether you're in luck.
Libraries loan ebooks on a 1:1 basis. That means you download them from
the library to one location once. That's the way their Overdrive software
is set up. Once downloaded to a computer, if the DRM settings allow it,
you can copy it over to an ebook reader. So, I'm not sure what you mean by
being able to download it to more than one device unless it's this
capability.
You should be able to set a 'place mark' in an ebook so that you can pick
up where you leave off. Depending on the device, it's either a bookmark,
placemark or earmark (not the Federal kind). Some devices do this
automagically when you turn off the device - some do not. Placemark
information is carried with the ebook in a portion of the data file
attached to the ebook. If it ain't working, then it's probably a
'compatibiltiy issue', as the programmers like to say, between devices.
That's not an ADE issue - unless you're using ADE to read the ebook. If
so, you should contact Adobe's help line and report the problem.....
