Can't backup my contacts to iCloud for transfer to my new IPhone 6

I currently am using my iPhone 5, and have tried every way that I know of to back up my contacts so that I can transfer them to my new iPhone 6+. I tried backing up by plugging in my iPhone 5 at night so it can backup, and I also tried backup through iTunes. Neither approach will update my contacts list. All I have is an incomplete list from sometime in the past. How can I solve this so I can activate my new phone and not lose my current contacts. I'm not very tech savvy, so please list all necessary steps.
This also makes me wonder what else may not be fully backed up. Thanks for any help.

Dear wise & wondeful people:
How can I get missing contacts, notes, calendar dates and reminders that are just on my old iphone onto the iCloud for transfer to my new iPhone upgrade? Half of my contacts, notes, ect. were on my iCloud so have happily moved to my new iPhone but the rest are completely resistant. For example, on my iCloud I have 14 missing contacts starting with the letter A alone, however they are happily viewable on my old iPhone 4S and won't budge over into the iCloud.
There are also 3 notes missing yet still acessible on my onld iPhone 4S, the list goes on.
Your help would be most appreciated. Thank you so much.

On the old phone go into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Are there any email accounts listed here? Such as Google, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc?
If so, tap on each of them and check the 'Contacts' option. If it is turned on, this means that contact syncing is enabled for that account and that your contacts may already be synced to that mail account.
Also check Settings > iCloud and look for the 'Contacts' option. Is it enabled? If so, then it is possible that some contacts could be synced to your iCloud account as well. You can check to see which contacts are in which account by going to the Contacts app on your old phone and pressing the 'Groups' button in the top left corner. You may see several groups here. Uncheck all groups and then check each group one at a time to check and see how many contacts are synced to each account. You may need to add the same mail accounts to your new phone and enable contact syncing to have the contacts from the mail servers sync down to the new phone.

Question re: syncing with Itunes in preparation for transfer of data to iphone 6

Hi, I have an iPhone 4s that I have never synced to iTunes. I've never synced it because it is my understanding that all the music on my PC in iTunes would be copied to my iPhone. I have a huge iTunes library that is much bigger than the space I have on my iPhone.
My questions are:
1. Am I right in assuming that everything in my PC iTunes goes to my iPhone when I sync?
2. Is there any way to sync without copying everything to my iPhone?
And here are a few more questions:
1. It is recommended to update to IOS8 prior to transferring data to iPhone 6?
2. I have heard that using iCloud to transfer data to new iPhone does NOT transfer apps or passwords. Is that true??

Ok, so this tells me what I have purchased, but it doesn't seem to allow me to do this. I checked my iTunes account and have confirmed that I have purchased a specific app, and using that same iTunes account I tried to download the app but it tells me that my credit card will be charged if I wish to continue. Unless as part of a backup, or stored somewhere else, they are gone.
Your son needs his own Apple ID for iCloud, FaceTime & iMessage. He can continue to use yours for iTunes content, but for everything else, he needs his own.
When you did what you did, as far as iCloud knows, this is the same person with multiple devices, and that's they way things are supposed to work: keep everything in sync.

No, you cannot backup your photos like it was in iDisk. iCloud has no usual folder system like any other hard disk. iCloud uses its storage capacity for backups of photos and videos in the Camera Roll, Zdevice settings (for example: Phone, favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts), app data, home screen and app organization, messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS), ringtones. That means other applications can use iCloud's storage space to store files, but there is no general folder system which you can access to store files.

Basically you have no rights in his account: if you know his password you can enter the account and retrieve personal data to use elsewhere. If he had purchased music, films or apps in iTunes you cannot transfer these to your own account.
If you don't know the password it seems doubtful that Apple will allow you access to it. However as far as all these questions are concerned the authoritative answers must come from Apple so you will need to contact them as indicated above.

YES, that is the free 5GB icloud memory for each apple ID. Can I not add the free 5Gb of my second Iphone to my original apple ID (5GB also) as I want to use one Apple ID name on both 2 Iphones? Unfortunately no. The only way the phone backs up is if you make it back up. You either connect to iTunes and backup and sync, or you set it up for a wifi sync to iCloud. But you have to setup iCloud to start with. You have learned a hard lesson on how to make sure you import pictures on a regular basis like you would the digital camera. When things happen to the phone, this is the media that is lost the most (pictures in camera roll). After taking a number of pictures, and especially ones you consider important, you should connect the phone to the computer and import them, so there is a backup copy on the computer.
Contacts are saved in the backup as well, however they are really designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer, or backed up to iCloud or other cloud service. And, the only way to go back in time on the phone is to restore from a backup, but you also have to remember, you would lose everything on the phone that you had done since that backup, so it is a double edged sword.

I think you may not using the right technical terms. When backing up to icloud, there is no way you'd get a message saying things will be wiped. This message may be displayed when you are performing a RESTORE from a backup and then trying to cancel it.
If you are doing a restore, then you can reboot and restore again.
