Can't backup my iphone after itunes 10.5 update

Aaargh, since I updated itunes to 10.5 on sunday, I got some issues with either itunes or the iphone - can't tell which one is the problem. The update took 4 hours but seemed to work but now the iphone is not recognized as a device and its impossible for me to update to ios 5 Automated update process is interrupted by the alert " can't backup", manual backup is not working either since itunes seems to "hang".

This solution totally worked for me:
This solution has been documented on this forum by several people, but the solution is usually deep in multiple threads. I really don't know who came up with it first, but it does indeed work.
I had an issue with iTunes.exe, APSDaemon, and AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe using 100% CPU per core. (Showed as 25% in Task Manager.)
I could not backup my iPhone and the CPU spike happened as soon as iTunes 10.5 was started on Windows 7 Home Premium x64.
This solved it.
Sounds stupid but works:
1. Quit iTunes.
2. Start an elevated command prompt (Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right Click "Command Prompt" -> "Run as Administrator")
3. Once in the command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" and hit ENTER.
4. Reboot your machine.
5. Restart iTunes.
6. ???
7. Profit!

Unable to backup iphone after itunes 10.7 update in windows 7

After the update to iTunes 10.7 on Windows 7 64 bit today, I can't get my iPhone to back up to my computer. I get a a message about being unable to establish a session with the phone. This happens with my iPad as well. Is this a known issue, or an update issue on my system?

Okay so, i had the same problem too. i reinstalled my windows and i was unable to get my itunes to backup my iphone. Luckily, before reinstalling the windows, i had saved the backup files of my iphone.
1.You can do this by going to: C drive/users/user/appdata/roaming/applecomputer/mobilesync/backup.
2.Note: windows computer do not show hidden files by default and appdata files are hidden.
to see the hidden files, visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Show-hidden-files
3. so next time you format and reinstall the windows, make sure you have backed up the iphone backup files.
4.so now after installing windows again and after reinstalling all the essential softwares, reinstall itunes and connect your iphone to itunes and authorise the computer.
5. go back to the iphone backup file storage location which is:
C drive/users/user/appdata/roaming/applecomputer/mobilesync/backup.
6. once you are there you will see that there are no back ups in that location which is quite obvious. now paste the backup files of your iphone ( The backup which you made before installing the windows). as soon as you do this, you will see that the tab whi read: Restore form a backup glows up and is Clickable.
7.so now, you have the backup and restore fully functional. for a safer side, make a new backup and transfer all the purchases to your new itunes.

Can I backup multiple iphones on itunes

I need to back up my boyfriend's old iphone 4 so his old stuff can be on his new iphone 5. I already have all of my own information backed up on my computer from my iphone 5. Can I do this with his on my computer withouth mixing up any information?

Yes, you can backup multiple iPhones.
It may be best to create a separate library into which all the content currently on the device can be extracted. A backup alone doesn't cut it. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. A separate library should avoid any mixing of stuff.

Yes I have the current updated version of iTunes which is 11.1.5. So yeah when I connect my iPhone directly to the MacBook Pro I have tunes pops up and wants me to restore the phone iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone “Enzo’s iPhone”. Go to the Summary tab in iPhone preferences and click Restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings. it doesn't give me any option to click to manually back up or restore. It only happens to my iPhone because I'm a Apple Developer and I called Apple just now and they said it works for non developers but for developers the new update isn't for some reasons working like it should Apple Care wasn't able to give me any help regarding this they told me to contact the developing team so I did but it haven't heard back from the team. My friends iPhone 5 works when I plug it into my computer and it shows what should be showing the normal user interface like manually backup or restore ect... but when I load it up this shows ? iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone “Enzo’s iPhone”. You don't want to do any kind of backup or sync on a different computer than the one where your iTunes library is stored. If you do, you will lose everything on your phone.....and then will have to restore it on the original computer.....

I can't sync my iphone to itunes since I updated to ios 7.

I updated my 4S last night with ios 7. After I did it, I couldn't sync my phone to my iTunes account on my computer. I have 11.05 installed. However, I get a pop up message when I plug my phone in to the computer that I need 11.1. Anyone having this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it since I cannot locate an iTunes 11.1?

After a little research, I finally figured out the problem. You cannot see the iTunes 11.1 download in anything but IE. I was running Firefox. Switched to explorer and was able to download the correct version of iTunes.

It shouldn't take this long, something is wrong with your iTunes. Try this:
Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and do the sync again and if it is working now.

No sorry. You need to upgrade to v10.5 Leopard (minimum) in order to sync an iPhone 4.
iPhone minimum requirements:
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.1 or later
iTunes Store account
Internet access
You can upgrade to Leopard if your Mac meets v10.5 requirements.

Moving the iOS device backup location
Open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up, or with Start > Run on older Windows.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: (for example) type in this command and press <Enter>
Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your preferred drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.
If you have Windows XP then you'll need a third-party tool such as Junction to link the two locations together instead of the MkLink command. The source folder is C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
