Can't backup new macbook to time capsule

I bought a new macbook pro and when connected to time capsule/time machine, it doesn't rotate out the oldest backups (which are from my older macbook pro that I want to keep using and keep backing it up too!).   So, with my new Macbook Pro, it tells me I'm out of space?
Can I backup more than one macbook pro to the capsule? This answer has to be YES.
How do I change the settings to direct the time capsule to rotate out the oldest backups?

The new macpro cannot use the old backup.
I suggest you archive the old backup to a USB drive and then erase the TC and start over. Otherwise it will not have enough space.
I think you need to read up Mr Pondini to understand what why and wherefore of TM.

I found it extremely helpful.

after restoring backup on new macbook with time machine Firefox will n to start. It says it is missing profile although profile exists and profile manager will not start. Also reinstalling does not help. Direct after starting Firefox it says profile is missing and then quits Firefox. Please help edit

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • New MacBook Pro Time Capsule Backup Restore Some Folders Only

    Hi
I am getting a new MacBook Pro. I have the latest Time Capsule and have fully backup my old MBP.
I am doing a fresh install of all my apps.
MY ?: Can I just restore some specific folders after I get my new MPB, or is the backup from the older MPB specific to that MPB
Can I just restore ONLY MY DOCUMENTS from the older back up to my new MBP.
Somewhere down the line, someone told me it cannot. Backups are only restorable to the machine that made it.
    Thank you

You can use that backup with the computer you want, always that the other Mac uses the same or a newer OS X than the other Mac.
During the first start of the new Mac, it will ask you to restore a backup, so select that option and follow the steps. It will ask you for what you want to restore from the backup, so you can select the folders, settings... you want to restore to the new Mac

  • Can I turn off Macbook while Time Capsule is archiving Time Machine backup to a USB drive?

My Time Capsule is archiving my Time Machine backup to a USB drive attached to it. I have initiated this process on my macbook (on the same lan with the Time Capsule), on which I am monitoring the archiving progress on the Airport Utility. Still almost a couple of days to go... Can I turn off my Macbook, or will that interrupt the process of archiving?

If LaPastenague is willing to do a "test", then we will all know more.
    Opened my big mouth.
The archive is happening.. I turned off the computer it was setup from.. running Mavericks and latest utility once I got it started. I have been checking from v6 utility on Mountain Lion.. and it is excruciatingly slow. But is running.
I can check the progress but v6 utility is utterly and completely useless.. it continually shows the same numbers.
v5 utility does show it is crawling along.
    v6
    20min later..
Look, look, there is a tiny blue fleck in the progress bar!!
v5 utility shows the actual progress. Actually tells you total and amount backed up so far.
Amazing how advanced v5 utility is over v6.
The estimate of 10hours is probably correct at the present rate of progress. I suppose for 500GB, around 50GB/hr is about what we expect from TM backups etc.
I will post another picture in an hour and probably kill it then before I die of watching paint dry.

  • How can I backup NAS drive to Time Capsule using Time Machine?

My itunes library is on a USB HD that's connected to my time capsule, essentially turning the drive into a NAS drive. Is there anyway I can include this drive in time machine backups? So basically, time machine would be backing up the hard drive connected to the time capsule... to the time capsule.
    Thanks. Steve

Sorry, but not possible. The Time Capsule can only backup an internal drive on a computer and an external drive that is attached directly to a computer.

  • Can you backup to 2 different Time Capsules?

I have a TC at home and one at work. Can I backup to both?

Yes, you can do this, but you must manually point your computer at the Time Capsule that you want use to each time you change locations.
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Click Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
    Highlight your Time Capsule
    Click Use for Backups

  • HT4623 can i backup my iPhone to time capsule

Not directly. However, you can backup your iPhone to iTunes, and, if you have Time Machine enabled, the iPhone's backup in iTunes will be backed up to Time Capsule.

  • Can I backup my MBP to Time Capsule

My old 2006 MBP finally decided to go to the after life (logicboard) The only way i can get into my files is by starting my MBP through safe mode. While in safe mode can I connect my MBP to my time capsule and do a manual back of all my files. So when I do get my new Mac I can restore from it?

Let's try a different tack. Try and see if you can get the Mac to go into Target Disk Mode ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661 ) by holding down the T key prior to the startup chime. If a Firewire icon pops up on the screen, you're all set. Turn the Mac off and abstain from using it if possible. While the new MBP arrives, go and purchase an appropriate Firewire cable. If the dying MBP has a Firewire 800 port, by all means get an FW800 to FW800 cable as this is the fastest option. Else get a FW400 to FW800 converter cable. When it arrives, plug the two Macs together with the cable, start up the old one in Target Disk Mode, then start up the new one.
Setup Assistant will kick in automatically in this first start. After a few questions, it will offer to migrate from a previous Mac ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889 ). Choose yes and select the target disk option. This will pull all your stuff from the dying Mac: files, settings and apps. Note that Lion doesn't do PPC apps anymore, so those legacy apps will be crossed out.

  • Can I backup my pc to time capsule

I placed a Time capsule between my home modem and home pcs and macs.  I know I can multi back up Macs to TC but, not sure if or how to backup pc to TC.  THanks for your help!

A network drive will not in any way affect the windows connection. I have no issues connecting a pc to the Time Capsule.. you don't even have to load any drivers.. just make sure you set the disk access correctly and put the TC in the correct workgroup for the computer.
The actual backup software you use will be the most important choice. Basically I use the free version of macrium reflect to do a full disk image and then just copy files across as I need them.. but there is no reason you couldn't setup or buy a suitable software that will do incremental backups.. even MS backup.. shudder.. must be somewhat improved in the later versions.

  • Direct backup from MacBook to Time Capsule

    Hi
I'm hoping this is a really simple qn so apologies if I'm taking up airspace...
I have an Airport Time Capsule 802.11ac 2TB and my wireless service hasn't been working for some time (thanks to my provider) but I really want to do a back up...
Qn is...  which cable & port to use?  (I did say it was simple!).  Can I use a USB2 cable or do I need an Ethernet LAN cable?
    thx!

Use an Ethernet cable that connects from the Ethernet port on your Mac to one of the three Ethernet LAN <--> ports on the Time Capsule.
Further, if you are looking for an Ethernet cable, it can be virtually any length (and color) that you want.
Make sure to get a CAT6 or CAT5e rated Ethernet cable.

  • Can't post new firmware on Time Capsule

Through the airport utility, I followed the prompts to do the firmware updates to 7.3.2 However, it won't install the update on my time capsule, only on the network extenders (older airport extreme and one airport express). It gives me a message that it needs to be in range or connected via ethernet, both of which it is.
Do I need to do a reset, or hard reset? I am always scared to loose some setup info when I start fresh!
Also, ever since I added the time capsule as my base station, I can only intermittently connect wirelessly to the internet from my iphone or laptop, although they both show strong wifi connections to the network, and ethernet connects to the internet through the same timecapusle. ??
    Thanks if anyone can help.

Have you opened this one over a wireless connection in the past?
A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.

  • Can I backup my iPad with Time Capsule

I have recently set up my new TC and need to know if it can be configured to automatically backup my iPad. I rarely use anything other than my iPad.

No. An iPad cannot backup to a TC. iTunes backs up the iPad. Time Machine will backup your iTunes folder and all other relevant folders to the TC.

  • I have a 500gb time capsule. with 100gb free. i have a 160gm macbook with 40gm free. if i get a new 500gm macbook can i keep using my 500gm time capsule?

    I have a 500gb time capsule. with 100gb free. i have a 160gb macbook with 40gb free. if i get a new 500gb macbook can i keep using my 500gb time capsule?

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

  • My 2 TB Time Capsule's memory is full because it will not automatically delete old files as it is supposed to, so it is giving me zero backup of my two computers now.  How can this be fixed so my Time Capsule deletes the old data and saves the new?

My 2 TB Time Capsule’s memory is full because it will notautomatically delete old files as it is supposed to, so it is giving me zerobackup of my two computers now. How can this be fixed so my Time Capsule deletes the old data and savesthe new?
Neither my local computer consultant nor I have been ableto change any of the settings in Time Machine to correct this problem.  Working with the choices in the TimeMachine, there does not appear that there is any way to change the frequency ofthe backups either, so, after a year has elapsed, the time capsule is full, andmy only choice appears to be to erase all the current data on the Time Capsuleand start over, something that I do not want to at all let alone repeat on anannual basis.  My questions are:
What can be done to have my Time Capsule delete old filesas it is supposed to do, so it has memory available to allow my computers toback up?
Is this a software problem that can be fixed online or isdoes this require a mechanical fix of defective hardware?

How much data is being backed-up from each Mac?  (see what's shown for Estimated size of full backup under the exclusions box in Time Machine Prefs > Options).
Is there any other data on your Time Capsule, besides the backups?
Most likely, there just isn't room.  Time Machine may be trying to do a very large (or full) backup of one or both Macs, and can't.  Since it won't ever delete the most recent backup, there has to be enough room for one full backup plus whatever it's trying to back up now, plus 20% (for workspace).
Also see #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for more details.

  • How does one transfer only 1 of 4 backups from an old TIme Capsule to a new one, such that the 1 on the old TC can be deleted to save space?

I have a 2-TB TC that currently backs up 4 Macs, which is full - no more space to backup, down to less than a year's worth of backup for one Mac, so I don't want any more old backups deleted.
I bought a new 3-TB Time Capsule, and wish to move only one of the the 4 backups to it, which is currently over 1 TB. The idea is to free space on the old TC for the other 3 Mac backups. Also the two TCs may end up in 2 different locations soon.
I read about how to do this at Apple and at pondini.
Upshot was that I copied over the one sparsebundle using Finder drag/drop from the old to the new TC.
When I go to Time Machine preferences to Select Disk, then click the new TC, and Use Disk, I get this dialog:
I don't want to Use Both.
I assume that if I click Replace "Data" that the 1+ TB file that took 12 hours to copy will be lost.
How do I get Time Machine to just resume backing up to this sparsebundle, and not create a whole new backup, deleting the file that has the past year of backups?

I assume you selected the new Time Capsule?  If in doubt, and for future clarification, you might want to rename the Data folder on one or both TCs via Airport Utility.  Click it on the Disks panel to change the name; then that name will appear on the selection window, etc., so you'll always know which is which:
In any event, the prompt means "Replace (the old) "Data" as the destination for this Mac's backups."  It will not touch either the new or old sparsebundle -- future backups will just be directed to the selected location(s).  Do note, however, that when you change destinations, the TM Prefs window will show "None" for oldest and latest backups.  Don't be alarmed -- that's just TM being lazy and not checking the actual backups yet. See #B3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #34 for details on backing-up to multiple destinations.
By the way, just for future reference, another option would have been to connect a USB drive to the existing TC (that's what "S.TM.Backups" is in the sample}.
How do I get Time Machine to just resume backing up to this sparsebundle, and not create a whole new backup, deleting the file that has the past year of backups?
    Click Replace "Data".
