'can't be ejected because it contains files that are in use"? help ~!

hey guys
so recently after i tried to upload a few videos onto my 80 gb video ipod (it worked fine before), i got a message that said 'the ipod 'owner's ipod' cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application'. this message pops up when i try to safely eject my ipod after its all done uploading, and when i click the eject button, the 'please do not disconnect, updating ipod' sign on my itunes comes up as well as the message up there. the "don't disconnect' sign comes up on my ipod as well. and only after i close itunes does it go away. what is the'other application' and how can i fix it?? help help ! thanks !

Well, I don't have an answer for you but it does happen to me occasionally also. I've never been able to figure it out either. I think it's interesting that it happens on your Windows machine and on my Mac. For me, it sometimes doesn't even help to quit iTunes. I have, on occasion, just disconnecte and reset the iPod, which doesn't seem to have done it any harm.

  • HT1351 Whether or not I sync items on iTunes to my ipod, I cannot eject the ipod because a message keeps coming up and saying that my ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are being used by another application. How do I fix this?

I just got an ipod classic 7th generation a couple days ago and I'm having a heck of a time with it. My latest problem is that with media on iTunes, I cannot eject the ipod because it says that it cannot be ejected because it contains files that are being used by another application. What application is this, and what do I do about it?

    Hi newipoduser,
    Here are some possible solutions:
Do you use musicmatch jukebox on your computer? If you do, you have to go into task manager on windows and end process mim.exe. It interferes with disconnecting ext devices
    Empty your "trash/recycle bin."
If that doesn't work, try quitting all your programs, especially music-type programs, basically things that look for mp3's etc.
if that doesn't work, "log off" then "log on" and that should refresh/purge your OS system.
Finally, you can restart your computer.
    Hope one of these helps!
    Cheers,

  • "The iPod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use..."

My iPod (20 gb, 4 gen) syncs fine, but when I go to eject it a window pops up saying "the iPod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application."
Unfortunately, there are no files on it (that I know of) that are being used by another application.
I can't use the eject function on the task bar because I have Vista and it will corrupt the iPod. I've just been unplugging it with out ejecting, but was hoping there was a solution. Any advice?

Are you running any anti-virus or spyware detection software in the background? Start closing programs located in the taskbar next to the clock and try ejecting the iPod.

  • The Ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by ano

When I want to eject my Ipod i get this message:
The Ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application.
After I had put some songs on the ipod, i got that message. I thought maybe the new songs were the problem but de computer still doesn't want to eject my Ipod and there are no programes in use other than itunes.
Does anybody know what to do???!!!
    greetings Mandarijn

    hi Mandarijn!
The Ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application.
by any chance, do you have McAfee ActiveScan security software on that PC? i've seen that implicated a few times with this message.
if you do have McAfee, as an experiment try switching that off prior to doing a sync. do you still get the message then?
if the McAfee thing doesn't-help/isn't-relevant, let's try using the following techniques to see if we can identify if some other program is causing the message. (the article is actually about installation errors, but the techniques are relevant to this sort of investigation.)

  • The ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application

I am using my crusty but trusty 5G iPod with my new rMPB, and things have been working as expected for the month or so that I've had the new laptop. But "recently," (past few days?), when I go to eject from iTunes (current - 11.1.5), I get the error message, "The iPod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application." The iPod is then ejected but the "Do not disconnect" message remains on the iPod screen. I can continue using the iPod as normal after all this.
If I eject the iPod from the Finder, I get no error message but the iPod screen still remains at "Do not disconnect."
I tried plugging it into my Windows 7 PC (did not reformat of course!) and then ejected it, and the iPod screen returned to its proper state after a proper Windows disconnect.
I have of course restarted my Mac and reset the iPod (Up + Center buttons held for ~5 sec) but no change. I don't remember changing the OS that would cause this - any suggestions as to the problem here?

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try resetting the iPod and power cycling your Mac to see if this message disappears.  If the issue persists you may need to restore the device to factory settings.  The article below will walk you through both these steps.

I had the same problem. I had to uninstall 7.0 and install 6.0 and was able to restore OK. I'm back using 6.0, but just got a second generation ipod nano, so I have to go to 7.0 or greater. My only words of wisdom are DO NOT SET ANY LOCKS until you are really sure you want to. Also with 7.0 I could not eject my ipod unless I went to the "safe to eject ipod" command. Apple has some problems to work out and I hope soon. Clumsy as best...............

Go to your computer's System Tray and try ejecting.  If you can't eject, there is an application that is trying to access your iPod.
Go to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx and download ProcessExplorer.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555665 and follow the instructions under Resolution.
Note that this is a good, general process any time you can't access any file.
In my case an update to RealPlayer installed a program called RecordingManager that was accessing my iPod.

Hi, arthur260, I presume you've solved this by now, but I came across this post looking for the same solution for my ipod nano. In my case the problem was that I had the box checked to "Enable disk use" under the options for the ipod. It immediately solved the problem when I unchecked this.

  • IPOD cannot be updated because it contains files that are in use by another application

I have ipod classic 3rd Gen and kept getting this message in trying to update the software version to 1.3.5 using Itunes 10.1.2.17. I hope my solution can help others. I use windows vista. The problem was with vista scan and fix. I made the following changes in msconfig (you can use the run cmd and typing msconfig):
    (1) In msconfig select services tab
    (2) Scroll down and uncheck Shell Hardware Detection
    (3) Restart the windows
    (4) Now run your ipod update
If you want you can check the Shell Hardware Detection after update is complete!

Do you have any maintenance apps, such as TechTool Pro, that run in the background and monitors things like disk usage on mounted volumes?  The iPod's storage is a mounted volume.
If not, try restarting the Mac to see if the problem goes away.
If it does not, or if it recurs later (and often), please post back.

I am receiving the following message from windows -
The iPod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application.
    Thus far I have

    hi annicajess!
The iPod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application.
let's try an experiment. first, let's check to see if the wee darling will disconnect properly if you switch off your antivirus and antispyware prior to an attempt at an eject.
if you're still getting the message, let's try steadily switching off background applications prior to attempts to eject (the following article is actually about installer errors, but the technique is the same for this sort of thing):
Close Applications Running in the Background
can you identify which application is causing the problem?
    keep us posted.

  • I just bot a new ipodnano and synched my playlists from my itunes library.  However, I am unable to disconnect as it says the the ipodnano contains files that are in use by "another application".  What is it talking about and how do I disconnect?

How do I disconnect./eject my new ipodnano after I had synched my playlists (from itunes library on my computer).
Itunes message - CANNOT BE EJECTED BECAUSE IT CONTAINS FILES THAT ARE IN USE BY ANOTHER APPLICATION:.
This is after my synch was succesfull and it says I can disconnect now - but it won't let me.
    Keith

For the immediately problem, you can shut down the computer and disconnect the iPod.
There may be a process (program) running on your computer in the background that continuously monitors mounted volumes for things like maintenance, data corruption, and malware.  The iPod's storage is a mounted volume.  If you know of any such program, such as an "anti-virus" utility, and it has settings that allow you to exclude certain volumes, you can set it to ignore the iPod "disk" when connected.
Also, if you are using automatic syncing (not the manual method) to load the iPod, and you have Enable disk use turned ON, turn it OFF.  With Enable disk use turned OFF, iTunes only mounts the iPods disk when syncing, then immediately unmounts the disk.  Thus, other processes you have running on your PC (not iTunes) will have less of a chance to make the disk "in use" and cause this problem.  You won't even have to eject the iPod before disconnecting.
