    If you're trying to sign in to FaceTime, try to sign in to iMessage in the Messages application, or vice versa.
    Otherwise, do as the alert directs. According to reports, you won't be charged for the support call if you select "Apple ID"—not the hardware model—as the product you're asking about, and cite the "customer code" in the alert as the "validation code" when you speak to the Apple representative.

Sign in to the store and review your account. You do not, of course, have to provide any billing information to set up an account to use only with iMessage, as it's a no-charge service.
    Another possibility is that the primary or alternate email address is invalid. Search the Web for the phrase "My Apple ID." The top hit should be an Apple web page with that title. I'm not giving a direct link because such links are never to be trusted. Sign in and verify the ID.
    Otherwise, do as the alert directs.     Launch iTunes and select from the menu bar
              Store ▹ Authorize This Computer...
    Enter the credentials and click Authorize.

    If your phone service is disconnected, it's not your number any more.
    If you "just got AT&T", how can it be disconnected?

    If imessage is unavailable it will send your message as a text (SMS).   He/She may be out of wifi or 3G connections.  See the 3rd paragraph under imessage http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3529

    My internet connection works and I can send emails from my phone. Additionally I can send imessages from my macbook. But I can't send imessages from my iphone.     I've seen a lot of people suggest switching to SMS, but they're talking about a different alert--that little ted exclamation point one. Right now, it doesn't even try to send. It's one of those navy blue pop up alerts like when you're in a completely different app & your phone alerts you that you got a text message.
    Our timing isn't great for phone calls either. And no guys I know respond to emails ever. I know it's not a matter of being blocked because a few weeks ago we made tentative plans & I was texting to follow up. Until today, I got responses.
    I'm not sure what the one suggestion means about changing the contact to @icloud.com. I don't have a cloud address and neither does he.
    Has anyone figured out what this problem is?

    Lots of users don't realize iMessage will send a text to any phone but using an email address the recipient needs to be registered on iMessage. I suppose when you think about it a text is on the cell network but desktops & laptops are not on the cell network so are sent on the net.
    Now if Contacts could be made so that it presented you with the cell number when you were sending a text but the email address only for emails.........
