Can't blur background; pic has multiple layers

I have tried all the ways people say to blur the background but cannot get the effect to show up on any layer or through any layer.. also tried linking layers, merging layers, updating background copy, etc. My picture currently has these layers, listed from BOTTOM to top - background layer that was merged with a background copy with gaussian blur effect; 2) background copy with unsharp mask 3) copy of previous layer with lighting enhancement 5) adjustment layer
I decided I wanted to blur the background a bit more (I will do anything! Gaussion blur, paint it on using a brush of some type, whatever!) but I can't get the effect to show up on any of the layers or through any of the layers.. I don't get it! Totally frustrated at this point.. your help is GREATLY appreciaated.

Try this from scratch:
Open picture file
Duplicate background layer
Apply Filter>blur>Gaussian blur to background copy layer
Place a levels adjustment layer between the background and the background copy layers. Leave the sliders alone
Point to the background copy layer, go to Layer>create clipping mask, or CTRL & G
Left click the mask (the white rectangle)
Access a black brush and paint where you don't want the blur to show up

How do I select a section that has multiple layers?

I cannot figure out how to do this.
I work with large city maps. What I need to do is select a rectangular portion of the map, cut it and paste it into a new file. From there I edit that section as needed. I can use the selection tool and select an area, but what it does is selects the area and any joined lines. This map is over 11 layers thick.
Every help manual online has only pertained to working with a single layer.
Is it possible to cut out a rectangular section from a multiple layer project?
Any help would be appreciated.

You can make an artboard to the rectangle shape ( you do this by holdog the shift key down as you drag the artboard tool to make the new artboard within an artboard) you need then select the artbord tool while holding the option key down to drag a duplicate of the artboard and its contents to a portion of the canvas not being used by the orignial document.
Now some of the items that extend beyond the artboard will be copied as well
now you can draw a rectangle to match the artbaords dimensions and while it is still selected go to Object>Path>Divide Objects Below.
the delete the objects out side of the rectangles dimensions including any part of the rectangle youse to divide the objects below with.
One problem with this method any open path will not be divided so you have to manually scissor them and then delete.
The good thing about this is that the layers remain intact and all layers are copied.
Once deleted the extraneous art you can marques select the cropped art and either copy and paste or cut and paste.
Or just leave it in the document as a separate artboard

Can I make a document w/ multiple pages?

I cannot find anything that states that I can create a file that has multiple pages. I am working on a newsletter and need to have at least 4 pages but don't believe that the tiling option is the best and/or only way. Can you please help??

It is the only way without spending more money. I wouldn't call it "best". Rather, "least worst".
There's is a plug-in for Illustrator from, I believe, Hot Door, that lets you use multiple pages. Basically it manipulates layers.
Multiple pages is a long asked for feature for Illustrator. Version 13 now still does not offer this, despite all other major competitors having the feature. Some since the 1980s.

Multiple layers with lowered opacity

Hello all,
I am working on an Indesign file that has multiple layers which are both on an apacity around 10%.
When I just put them both on 10% obviously you can see the bottom layer right through the top layer.
What I want is that you won't be able to see the bottom layer (despite the top layer being on 10% opacity) but just see the white backgound just as if there would not be another layer underneath.
In the example image you can see what I have now.
So what I want is that you won't see the logo's of the carbrands underneath the word Scantools.
Is this possible?

You could also just use a tint of the color instead of reducing the opacity of the word SCANTOOLS.

Is it possible to select specific properties of multiple layers at once?

I know that you can alter, opacity for example, of multiple layers at the same time by selecting the opacity property of each layer. But what if there are so many layers that you want to select a single property of many layers at once?
For example, I want to edit the value of the "mask expansion" property of a lot of layers, but don't want to go through and select "mask expansion" on every single layer. Surely there must be a way to select specific properties across multiple layers?

No, unfortunately there isn't. Such stuff is based on the property control actually being visible and being equally visibly selected. Unless you linked it with expressions, it won't sync without the properties being revealed and selected.

If you use the same AppleID for iMessage and iCloud though, you will all be sharing the same message account and iCloud email account. Our home network has multiple devices connected by iCloud. Having problem with Calendar. On one iMac, all the events are duplicated. How can I correct that problem? Under the Calendar accounts, I had my Apple id listed and also just iCloud.

I have two questions: 1) How can I eliminate the duplicated events on my husband's computer and 2) How do I retrieve the old wiped out Calendar events from
Time Capsule. I don't know how to find Calendar in the Time Capsule. If I find the Calendar information in Time Capsule, how do I transfer it to my current Calendars?
I was obtaining phone help from one of the Apple techs at Apple Support, but our call was disconnected part way through. Didn't know how to reconnect with the tech.

Can I embed layer styles to an image that has several layers and effects

I have a logo that has numerous layers - which I used to created depth with styles in PSD.
If I scale my logo image 80% - the layer effects remain as it was at 100%.
Can I do something to have the layer effects scale accordingly with the image?
I tried flattening the image - but it doesn't keep all of the effects.
Any thoughts.

I usually go to transform > scale and enter percentage above in the tool bar or just drag the anchors accordingly.

Can you link a folder that has multiple files

I have DW CS4. Is it possilbe to do a link to a folder that has multiple files. What I'm trying to accomplish is a link that will have multiple chocies of what months results people will be able to choose.

This is not something that is the simplest thing to do and will require some server side programming. With Godaddy there are 2 hosting plans that they offer, one for Windows and one for Linux. If you got the Windows plan you will need the script in ASP, which I admit I am not well versed in which is why I asked the question earlier. If you have the Linux plan with PHP I could help you out a little. To be honest if you do not have a lot of experience with programming I would probably recommend that you use the Jump menu in Dreamweaver (under the forms tab of the insert toolbar). That will allow you to have a link to a page from one month's results.
Otherwise what you end up needing is a form that stores the results as an array and then you run a loop on the display page to include files based on what is stored in the array.
It can be done, but from the sounds of your experience I would recommend taking it one step at a time and learning along the way.

Can't select multiple layers

This sounds very obvious, I know.
But! I have lost the ability to select multiple layers. Shift, Command, Control Click. Nothing works. I can't select them with the selection box like I used to either. There must be a setting or something that I accidentally clicked? If I can't select multiple layers I basically can't do anything including grouping or linking or merging layers in additon to a bunch of other stuff that is crutial!
This is driving me batty.

To supplement this it might also be a conflict with a third party software as well.
If the keyboard tmethsd of resetting the preferences doesn't work then
1. Quit Photoshop
2.Go to User/username/Library/Preferences/ Adobe Photoshop CS4 Settings and trash the settings folder, the whole folder not just the contents of the folder..
3. Start Photoshop. Photoshop creates a new preferences file.
Also if you recently updated your system there might be a conflict with the systems key board shortcuts, Like Spotlight, Universal access, dashboard and Exposé or asI said before it could be something like Quicken.
Have you installed anything lately.
