Can't boot after installing updates

I am quite new apple and this is my first problem I have encountered.
I downloaded updates and now my computer wont boot. I have tried safeboot and it just freezes on the 'starting OSX bar'. I have inserted 'install disk 1' (which is OSX 10.4.6) and gone through disk utilities to repair permissions and the disk - then starting from the hard drive in safeboot and it still gets no further than the 'starting OSX bar'.
If I chosse to boot from the install disk will it take me to the 'erase and intall' option.
What should I do? If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

I guess you could skip the steps you have done already...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Can't boot after system update: unknown filesystem type

After running a system update, including updating the kernel, I can't boot to the new kernel.
On booting, grub loads the kernel image, runs/loads udev, but then fails to mount the root partition with error:
mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext4'
I have tried reinstalling the 'linux' package via packman several times, also trying the --recursive argument to make sure all my dependencies were there, and after days of googling and tweaking my system, I'm at a loss.
Thank goodness I happened to keep a spare kernel laying around in /boot.

The OP can read their partition initially though, it's only after udev that they can't.
Also, try adding "rootfstype=ext4" to your grub kernel line. Is your /boot on a separate partition or part of your / partition?

MacBook won't boot after installing update 10.9.2

Hi there,
After successfully installing the 10.9.2 update on my MacBook Pro, I was able to boot to the updated system once. Then, suddently my macBook crashed and I was unable to boot again.
I managed to find a way to backup my files using the recovery mode and the Disk utility, however this wasn't straightforward to me since I was using FileVault..
Does anybody else have a similar experience with the 10.9.2 update?

The login screen appears as usual, and I am able to put username/password. Then, it fails to login and it returns the user to the login screen without mouse or keyboard working.
I booted using Command Button + S (single-user mode) and I see the error
"error loading mach kernel 0xe"
At least, I am able to boot in recovery mode to backup my disk :-)

Can't boot after glibc update (even after a fresh netinstall)

My main system no longer booted after doing a pacman -Syu yesterday, following the instructions at https://www.archlinux.org/news/the-lib- … a-symlink/ .
I booted a livecd, rsynced my /home to a storage drive and did a netinstall today. The system still doesn't boot.
The screen goes black after "waiting for udev uevents to be processed" appears, together with expected microcode errors.
I booted the system with a livecd again and mounted /dev/sda3. /var/log is empty, except for a pacman.log from the install, containing no errors.

Adding nomodeset to the grub kernel line made it boot fine, so I've narrowed it down to a framebuffer issue.

Macbook Pro, Can't boot after EFI update....

Updated the EFI this morning- Prior to that update, everything was working fine. After the update, I have the flashing question mark folder of doom. Can't use internet recovery even while plugged into ethernet. What happened? Everything was going so well Apple! I'm on Lion, latest updates, 2011 MBP 2.2 i7, SSD 120g with a 750g running beside it (data doubler).

Okay, so the disk is supposed to show up as disk0s2.
Remember how I'm unable to unmount the drive? I force unmounted it and then used Disk Utility to repair the volume, but still no luck.
I think the key to the problem is this new HD I put in runs at 3 Gbps. I think I read somewhere that the new MacBook Pro's don't support that.
I think next I'm going to try swapping out the new HD in my MacBook Pro with the one it originally came with.

Can't boot after system update - INIT: No inittab file found

Hi i've a pc where i installed arch linux more than one year ago
Its a:
PentiumII 400mhz
192mb ram
2 harddrives (don't know if i use them as a lvm or if each consists of 2 partitions used as mountpoints)
graphic card nvidia TNT2
i wanted to update it using "pacman -Syu" but it didnt worked because TNT2 needed nvidia legacy treiber 71xx don't work with kernel > 2.6.26
so i removed currently used nvidia treiber with pacman and installed the xf86-nv driver using pacman...
after that i think i updated just the kernel (pacman -S kernel26)
and than the system (pacman -Syu)
that was successfully....but after my reboot the shock
INIT: No inittab file found
Enter runlevel:
doesnt matter what runlevel i try i can't get further
what should i do now? please help me and provide me something like a step by step guide

LILO can't boot after recent update

After updating today, I cannot boot any longer. My root is on lvm and I also use LILO.
I've tried the suggestions to boot from live cd and run mkinitcpio without any success. I've also tried reinstalling udev and mkinitcpio with pacman from a live cd and that did not work either.
When I boot, I see the following messages:

Also, when i try to update udev or linux or device-mapper with pacman, I get the following warnings:

[edit] for anyone looking at this post trying to resolve the above warnings, don't. They don't seem to cause problems and as far as I know they show only during a chroot environment within a live boot, so don't worry about them. If you experience issues, it's most likely related to something else, my particular issue was actually with the LILO boot loader and not related to these warnings at all.

Help, ibook not booting after installing update 10.4.8 combo

Hi there,
i just updated my ibook 500 dual usb, with 10.4.8 combo and when i restarted the screen was gray with a flashing question mark.
I tried to boot in every mode (with x, with startup manager) and also i checked with disk warrior and disk utility and the hard drive is fine.
Any idea?

Well, if disk utility shows the disk, as well as disk warrior, I would move on to reset the PRAM (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58042). If that does not work, I would run disk check from disk utility on the install cdrom. If that does not work, I would move on to an archive and install. Please check:

Mac OS X (10.4.7)

[SOLVED] Can't boot after install

I installed Archlinux using the FTP LiveCD. Everything finished good, and there were no errors. I then reboot and Grub comes up like it's supposed to. But when I try to boot into Arch it says:

I tried going into the Grub and changing the by-uuid to /dev/sdb1 (Which is where the root partition is) but I got the same thing.
My partition scheme is like so:
/dev/sda1 /home
/dev/sdb1 /
/dev/sdb2 swap
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Maybe this should be documented: It is quite common that the BIOS drive order is different when booting from CD than when booting from the hard drive. Also, grub often guesses the drive order wrong. The only way to be sure is to install grub to the MBR and analyze the drives from there.
Your problem might make more sense though: As you installed grub in the MBR of the second hard drive, you probably told the BIOS to boot from the second hard drive instead of the first. This causes most (all?) BIOSes to reorder the drives so that the second hard drive appears to be the first. And GRUB only accesses the hard drive through BIOS. Linux doesn't care though, it has its own order (which might change too) and we use UUIDs to identify the drives anyway.

Can't boot after installing 10.5.4 on 17" powerbook

I've has Macs since 1987 and have never seen this one. I bought a family pack of 10.5 and it installed perfectly on both my Intell Powerbook and my wife's EMac. yesterday I tried to install it on my mother-in-laws 17" power book. It seemed to be working fine even though I had to ignore some Norton warnings. Even managed to get on the internet. So I shut it off. After a couple of hours decided to try it again just to make sure everything was working before I sent it home with her. The chime sounded, the little propeller thing started turning but after quite a while I got a picture of a circle with a line through it. Kind of like those warning signs like no smoking or no whatever without any words. It stayed like that for 15 minutes until I finally shut it down. Tried to reboot using the Leopard install DVD holding the C key down and got the same thing. Got kind of panic cause my MIL hadn't backed up for awhile. Finally got it to reboot using the 10.3 install discs so decided to just install 10.3 and see if I could back up everything before trying again on 10.5. Two questions:
What is that symbol ie what does it mean? and
What do I do about it?

Normally this issue would only appear with Disk Doctor or Speed Disk on any version of Mac OS X. Since you are using anti-virus, then it probably was more likely due to something else that made the directory damaged. See my FAQ* on the directory:

Norton's anti-virus and firewall are actually relatively redundant except in cases where you are trying to avoid becoming a "typhoid mary." If using them, make sure the version they have has been tested with your operating system. ClamXAv is a much better anti-virus application for more current operating systems as it offers less bloat on the operating system.

Black screen+can't boot after installing Windows

Hello
I just reinstalled MacOSX on my MBA, then installed Windows XP Pro via Boot Camp, though I've not seen XP boot yet. When Mac restarted I chose to boot to Windows in Boot Camp. Now I just get a black screen and 'Disk error. Press any key to restart'. No keys respond and I have to press the power button for 10sec to get anywhere. but I seem to be stuck with the black screen.
any ideas!

This has happened to me on my MBP.
Did you select to format the disk under Windows setup? You have to select this, not just assume the partition is formatted. When I chose the option to format into FAT32, the rest of the install went fine and instead of the black screen, it booted right into XP.

Leopard USB install no longer boots after software update

Hi all,
I have recently installed Leopard onto a USB partition in order to perform maintenance on my main Leopard installation. Installation proceeds without a problem however after downloading software updates the USB partition will not boot successfully, despite there being no problems with the disk / volume structures / apparently anything at all. In desperation I also tried to install Tiger, which worked, however I have the same problem after updating - it will not boot! I don't think my hardware is at fault - Techtool Pro tells me all is in order.
Has anyone had this problem and if so, how did you fix it?

I just installed Leopard onto a USB 2.0 external hard drive for a dual-boot. It booted fine at 10.5.1 but is taking ridiculously long to boot after 10.5.2 (I just got it to finally boot after the update while waiting more than 40 minutes!).
It seems that you may want to attempt booting several times - maybe turning off the machine in between or booting to the internal OS first and then to the external. Can't help you much beyond that as this is my introductory experience with this mess.

Will not start even in safe boot after installing latest camera update

MacBook Pro will not start even in safe boot after installing latest camera update.
I started my machine and did a software update. Only the camera update needed. So installed and when required I pressed restart. It restarted and did install. Then restarted again. I expected to get to the login screen and it turned itself off. Tried three more times. Each time shutting off. I unplugged everything, and pressed start waiting for log in window. No it shutdown before the log in window. I then tried safe mode and that did not work either on three more occasions.

I have managed to resolve some issues. I can now restart the machine via a CD boot. If I do cmd C into something like tech tool pro, then restart from that disks menu it restarts every time.
If I try a safe start it shuts down. If I try a normal start it shuts down. I have managed to repair permissions and that cleared up some start up permissions but with no improvement to the boot problem. The only way to load is via the cmd-C boot option. Any other ideas?
