Can't boot after new OS update!  Please help!

I just did the auto update for the new OS. My mac froze during the install. After several minutes I did a hard reset. Now it won't boot up at all. After several minutes on a gray screen the fans kick in extremely hard, but nothing happens on the screen.
I would hate to have to reinstall the OS, any advice would be much appreciated.

Welcome to discussions:
Try to boot from your install disc and then install the combo update from Apple's web page,

  • Can't Boot After New HD + Time Machine Restore

    So a couple days ago my 27" iMac running Snow Leopard started making some weird noises and stalling out. Annoyed, I talked for a couple hours with apple tech support which eventually lead me to run an Apple Hardware Test. This test returned the error
    "Alert! Apple Hardware Test has detected an error.
    4HDD/11/40000000 SATA(0,0)"
    I scheduled an appointment at the Genius Bar, and they replaced the hard drive.
    After that I got it home and did a System restore from my time machine backup. It finished fine, but when I restarted it got stuck on the grey apple screen with the spinning dial thing.
    I called apple back and they had me do a couple things like repair disk, verify disk, and one person had me reboot into this command line mode and type some stuff in. Nothing worked. After that They had me try to reinstall the OS first from archive, and next by erasing the hard drive and doing it. Both times the install fails with a big yellow exclamation point saying that it couldn't install support files and the OS couldn't be installed.
    Any ideas how to fix this?
    I'm currently trying to restore from my time machine backup again, but I'm not hopeful.

    Here's what I got - apologies for any formatting peculiarities.
    The problem: 10.6.6 mac won't boot after time machine restore to disk.
    Further symptoms: Booting with Command-v shows several errors: usually blued and loginwindow collapse with errors from launchd. Errors will be of the style "dyld: Symbol not found: CSSMOID_APPLE_TP_MACAPPSTORERECEIPT" and other CommerceKit / CommerceCore framework errors.
    A solution: Your Framework Security library may be an older version (possible cause with Time Machine below). The easiest way to fix this is to find another, working 10.6.6 Mac, and update the Security library on the broken machine.
    Identifying if you're affected:
    1) Boot the broken machine into "target" mode - hold "Command-t" during boot until the [Firewire|http://itunesu.utah.edu/terms/images/Firewire_Icon.png] icon appears.
    2) Connect the broken machine to the working 10.6.6 machine with a firewire cable.
    3) On the working machine, the disk of the broken machine should mount.
    4) Open Terminal
    5) Run "ls /Volumes" - the name of disk you mounted should be there (in this example, we'll use "Macintosh HD".)
    6) Typing in the path of the broken machine, run:
    <pre>
    nm /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security | grep random_fd | cut -d. -f2
    </pre>
    (this does a dump of the library, looking for the version value)
    If this comes back with the value 22457 (or less?), your Mac is not booting because it does not have the updated version of the Security library, which is required in 10.6.6 since Snow Leopard added the Appstore / Commerce framework.
    Fixing if you're affected:
    1) First, make sure the working 10.6.6 Mac has a correct version of the framework:
    <pre>
    nm /System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security | grep random_fd | cut -d. -f2
    </pre>
    For 10.6.6, this should be at least "22458"
    2) *Be extremely careful at this point* - Make sure on the mounted disk (not the machine you are working on!) run the following
    <pre></pre>
    2a) Make a backup of the broken library
    <pre>
    mkdir /Volumes/Macintosh HD/savedLibrary
    cp /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security /Volumes/Macintosh HD/savedLibrary
    </pre>
    2b) Copy the working version over the non-working version:
    <pre>
    cp /System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security /Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security
    </pre>
    3) Eject the mounted disk from the working Mac, disconnect the firewire cable, and reboot the "broken" Mac. It should come up.
    If it doesn't, you have problem(s) that are probably outside the scope of this. I'd also suggest restoring your original security library that you saved off.
    Suspected cause:
    It appears that Time Machine never recorded the change to the Security library after the update. If the library hadn't changed, the machine should have failed to boot like it did after restore the moment a 10.6.6 update was applied.
    Inspecting the contents of my Time Machine backups before and after updating shows that Time Machine never updated the Security Framework library - why is still not 100% determined, but restoring from it is definitely broken. Combing through the backup databases on my Time Machine disk:
    (I upgraded to 10.6.6 on January 6)

  • Disk Space Disappearing After Today's Updates - Please help

    Hi there everyone. I'm having major problems with my mac pro today, and for the first time, I cannot fix it. Please help me. I will try to explain what happenned. Like most, I was very excited about the release of ios 5 today. I downloaded the Lion 10.7.2 update, the ios 5 updates, iTunes and the iPhoto update. I installed of these without problems and then I enabled iCloud. I then decided to first update and restore my iPad 1 to ios 5. This worked perfectly fine and my computer was running fine. Then, I decided to update my iPhone 4 next. This is when I started running into problems. I updated it and then went to restore it from a a backup. This did not work, I got an error message that told me it was unable to restore the phone becasue it was unable to create backup.
    So, I then checked the disk space for the main Lion drive and it was at zero. I thought, well I was sure I had at least a few gigs, but maybe I used them. So i deleted enough files to create 5GB of free disk space. I then tried to run it again, and I watched as my disk space slowly went down to zero again. I thought maybe it needed even more space than that. So I rebooted the machine and yet my disk space did not reappear. I had about 200mb when I rebooted. Then i noticed it was randomly fluctuating and went down to zero again. I then deleted another 3gb of files and created more disk space to try again. The same thing happenned again. I have now rebooted the machine again. When it first rebooted it had 500mb of disk space, it then fluctuated and went down to zero again. It is going between 67mb and zero every minute or two, and then goes up to 400MB, then reduces down to zero again. What is happenning? I have not opened any applications except for safari right now. Do we think there is a problem with my virtual memory or disk all of a sudden? It seems strange this happenned today. it must be related to one of the updates? I thought it might be icloud. So I have diabled that completely and the fluctuations have not stopped.
    I would really appreciate any help anyone can give. I cannot think what the problem is. I cannot even run Techtool to check anything because nothing is working with no space for memory. Every time I delete files it goes down to zero anyway.
    Thank you very much

    How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
    How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
    With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Can't access HD or Finder after new Software update!  Help

    I ran the software update on my G5 & now it wont let me access my hard drive or finder. It will lt me run apps from my dock, but thats it. When it loads it only loads the top toolbar by the clock & thats it. The computer is a workstation & hasn't had access to the internet in 8 months.
    I'm running:
    G5 10.4.11
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Blake, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
    *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
    Safe Boot... holding Shift key down at bootup. Safe Boot is a special way to start Mac OS X 10.2 or later when troubleshooting.

    If you can't find your Install Disc, at least try from Safe Boot onward.

    Hi BDAqua,
    After weeks of strugle I can use my MAC as normal, but everytime I shut it down, she cannot wake-up, I had to refer to your hints in order to start it up again. So right now I can use my MAC every day with "SLEEP" mode.
    She just cannot RE-START or wake up after a SHUTDOWN.
    Any suggestion is greatly appreciated, here under I pasted the log file retrieved from Disk Utilities.
    (I tried also to reset PMU, SMU and PRAM but nothing helped. Perhaps she is in need of a brand new PRAM battery???

  • Can't boot into 10.5 anymore, please help

    So the unthinkable happened and water spilled onto my MacBook. I quickly shut it off and let it dry out. When I booted again a few day later it comes up to a blue screen, the mouse appears and then it goes to a light blue screen with a spinning gray pinwheel. I tried to boot of my Install DVD but it appears not to be working. When I hold down 'C' at power on, nothing happens. When I try the "option" button aproach I only see a MacHD icon. The CD spins, but dosn't apear to read.
    Any one have any ideas on how I can restore my Mac from Single-User mode? I already tried the fsck with no luck (says everything is OK).
    *UPDATE:
    1)Went into single-user mode
    2)Mount -uw /
    3)Typed "fsck" from root

    I was hoping you had a cloned backup of your internal drive, but it sounds like you don't. You're kind of up a creek without being able to boot from your CD drive either. You can't even reformat the drive at this point. If you can get your hands on an external USB burner, you could boot from your install disk and reformat the drive or run DiskWarrior from there. Even that may not work though if your logic board has a problem and the USB ports are out. You can see how important a bootable backup is for emergency troubleshooting now.

  • Site failing starting 9/21 with new Chrome and new Flash updates - PLEASE HELP!

    I have a vertical site for boating with 110,000 users.  The main part of the site is based around a 400KB swf that is mostly AS3.  It has worked flawlessly for years.  I haven't updated it in about 4 months.  There has been no server update that would be causing any issues at all in at least a month.
    All of a sudden on 9/21, some users started complaining that the main map view was all white.  Other things are not working correctly either.  It happened mostly with users who had automatic updates turned on in Google Chrome.  I understand that a new Flash version was auto-installed as a part of a Google update yesterday.
    I went to the Adobe Flash page and was prompted to update my player although I have 10.3.183.10 installed.  I didn't do that.
    Today people on other platforms are complaining that they're getting the same white screen although the bulk of our users are having no problems, probably because they haven't been updated.  It seems to happen in Internet Explorer and Firefox starting today.  I have a feeling these people had their Flash version updated.
    I updated to the beta v11 and now I'm experiencing the white screen blank problem - it is perfectly reproducible.
    To view the place where this is happening, go to:
    https://activecaptain.com/X.php
    The problem occurs on both OSX and Windows.  I don't think it is operating system involved at all.
    There are no errors, warnings, messages, traces, etc. coming out on the developer windows in Safari in v11.  Absolutely everything appears perfect except it isn't working at all.
    This is causing a major problem and I don't know what to do.

    Hi JeffActive,
    Sorry for all the inconvenience you encountered so far.
    We did investigation on your problem and found out it's related with our security update on 9/21/2011.
    When load your website with debugger plugin player, the following stack overflow errors are found:
    AS error occurred:
    Error: Error #1023: Stack overflow occurred.
                    at com.afcomponents.umap.gui::UIMapControl/getClassByName()
                    at com.afcomponents.umap.gui::UIMapControl/getClassByName()
                    at com.afcomponents.umap.gui::UIMapControl/getClassByName()
    This haven't been seen in flash player no later than 10,3,183,7.
    By confirming with our developers, in 10,3,183,10, we added some checks to detect stack overflow conditions. That's why 'Stack Overflow Occurred' errors are detected in your codes.
    If go to below security bulletin page, you can find more detailed information of security updates in 10,3,183,10:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb11-26.html
    As there are stack overflow errors in your codes, flash player(later than 10,3,183,10) avoids loading it. To fix the problem, need to fix those AS stack overflow errors in your codes.
    We don't have the source code of your swf file right now, so can't tell which AS codes cause this stack overflow issue. Could you test your swf file in our latest debugger player(10,3,183,10), then find out which lines of AS codes caused the problem? Once the stack overflow issue is solved, the swf should be loaded correctly.
    Again, sorry for all the inconvenience cause by this new security changes. We're improving our player to be more secure. We would be glad to work with you to solve your problem ASAP if any help needed from us.
    Thanks,
    Yan

  • Black screen after 10.51 update, please help!

    Installed Leopard on external F/W drive , although could not repair permissions on drive.I installed 10.51 then, display went black,and would not come on. Forced the machine to turn off. Disconnected external drive, pulled all the A/C cords,etc. Finally got it to start on the old Tiger OS on the internal drive.
    Just got off the phone with Applecare and they gave me the old "We do not support 3rd party hardware". My external drive is a OWC 911 chipset drive with Tiger on the partition so I don't get it.
    Is there perhaps something different about Leopard that precludes you from installing it on an external firewire drive?
    Does Anyone have any ideas?

    If cd boot was okay and attrib bcd was not, then the the bcd is apparently missing. Bad news. Time to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media.
    Are there important files to recover first?
    Even recovery with "0" is impossible, though it did work fine previous to this.
    If the recovery discs were not created,  you can obtain them from Toshiba.

    That sort of thing is typical of incompatible modules. Turns out that unless you order your add-on memory from Toshiba or buy memory made by Kingston, you'll likely as not have that difficulty.

  • Safari can't connect after latest Lion update

    Just updated my software and now safari can't connect to websites. It connects for a bit then after awhile it will no longer connect. Firefox and Chrome are connecting fine so this is a safari only issue with the latest update.
    Safari Version 5.1.5 (7534.55.3)
    Quiting safari and restarting works for a little while then eventually 'can't connect to server' eventually appears. I'm going back to firefox until this is resolved.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.
    Hi I have the same sort of problems I carried out the two tests and the problem appears to only be in my profile not in guest profile. Is there a cure?

    Hi can anyone help me. I have a apple macbook laptop OSX 10.5.8 . When i push print, it shows my printer but says cannot communicate with printer. (epson stylus nx125). Do I need new drivers? Please help .  regards Cindy

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're users here and do not speak for "Apple Inc."
    Some basic printer troubleshooting steps before worrying about a printer driver:
    1. Have you tried turning the printer off and back on?
    2A. Is the printer attached with a cable?
         If yes, have you tried unplugging and re-plugging both ends of the printer cable?
         If that does not help, can you test the printer with another cable?
    2B. If your printer is not connected to the computer with a cable, have you tried restarting your printer (assuming wireless connection)?
         Have you tried restarting your wireless router?
    3. Have you tried restarting your MacBook? (Be sure to save your work first.)
    4. Does the printer have ink? (Doesn't usually generate a 'communications error' though)
    5. Have you updated OS X or the program you're trying to print from recently?
