Can't boot alternate OS's from CD - (caused by recent update?)

Hello,
I'm wondering whether a recent firmware update may have caused my macbook to refuse to boot installation CDs other than Windows. I'm trying to install a Linux distribution but no matter which burnt ISO I try, I can't get past the black screen and flashing cursor (remembering the days when your HDD went bad on a MS-DOS machine?)
The first funny thing is, that the ISOs I've burnt using the built-in superdrive, work fine in any other machine I've tried. Ubuntu, Gentoo, Sourcemage all fail to boot, either using rEFIt, 'C' at startup to force boot to CD or 'option' at boot to choose the boot device.
The second funny thing is that I've done this in the past and don't remember having any trouble like this. (I had MacOS X, Windows XP and Ubuntu all multibooting through rEFIt.)
Any help would be appreciated!
Brad

A lot of things could be wrong. You stated your story telling of someone deleting "all the files"? What does that mean? The only way to delete all the files is to do an erase of the drive. They can all be deleted that way.
Was this someone installing a firmware update and not following through with the proper procedure for installing the new firmware? If that's the case then I can understand having lots of issue from that point onward.
If you do not have a valid operating system on your hard drive then the computer should automatically boot with the install DVD even if you don't hold down any keys after hitting power. Since it appears that it does not then either your optical drive or logicboard components dealing with it would appear to be amiss. The question mark at boot means no valid OS can be found on any drive.
Without understanding what you meant and what was done with regard to someone "deleting all the files that could be deleted" I don't have any idea how to proceed.

  • Can't boot correctly or resume from sleep Compaq laptop, blinking caps light

Hi everyone, I'd like to know if there's a way to fix this weird problem, my laptop can't boot correctly (it shows the CPU blinking caps error code), and after reseting 4 times or so it boots successfully and it works great after that (never saw a BSOD or hang or anything). I can't also resume the laptop from sleep, it shows the same blinking error code.
I had the same problem like 3 months ago, I replaced the CPU with a new one and it worked without a hassle until now. (The reseting trick didn't work back then, so I guess it's a different problem now). Also since then the laptop never overheated, my CPU is always underclocked at 25% using the Maximum Processor State setting in Windows (it probably isn't underclocked at 25%, more likely at 50% or so, but I can certainly feel the difference because it never got really hot, the CPU reports a temperature of 110F/48C under normal use, and it always feels cool to the touch).
I mean, although the laptop works once I get it to boot, not only it's annoying but also I don't know how long it is gonna work doing like 5 resets every single day.
I've tried the arrow keys trick, pressing the power button without the battery or AC connection, I have also reset the BIOS, it booted correctly the first time (it asked to reset the BIOS settings to default), but afterwards it showed the same behavior.
Please don't waste your time telling me to buy a new motherboard and/or CPU, that would be impractical because it's way more convenient to buy a new laptop in that case.
    Thank you very much.

Okay so after like a month or so I found a way to boot it up without problems, it also fixes the sleep problem. So if anyone is having the same problems, try the following: Turn on your laptop pressing the power button for a couple of seconds (just until you see the boot screens) as soon as possible after you connect the AC cable.

  • Satellite P855-34K can't boot in CSM mode from USB or ODD

Hi everyone, first time here for me.
I recently bought a Satellite P855-34K laptop, with UEFI, and I'm finding impossible to boot with UEFI set into CSM mode when using USB sticks or CDs/DVDs.
And yes, I obviously DID disable Secure Boot and switched to CSM boot in UEFI's setup.
Fast boot has always been disabled, too.
I tried to toggle USB3.0/2.0 and the activation of USB in sleep mode, no way.
Plus, that would make a difference for USB only, as I said optical media don't boot either.
All medias (USB sticks and optical) work flawlessly on other computers, and don't support UEFI (so CSM booting is a must for me). I even tried two USB sticks on another, fairly recent, Toshiba laptop of a friend of mine (can't remember the model right now), and CSM boot worked flawlessly on that (I obviously needed to toggle the Secure Boot and UEFI/CSM boot options).
Do note that USB sticks set up for UEFI boot DO work. In fact I have two OSes on my HDD, both set to boot via UEFI, and I installed the second OS with a UEFI stick.
One more interesting fact: UEFI setup (F2 at boot) displays USB sticks make and model correctly. UEFI boot menu (F12 at boot) DOESN'T do that in CSM mode, but DOES in UEFI mode (obviously sticks won't boot in UEFI).
I tried to search both on this forum and on Google, and I wasn't able to find an answer.
Talking with Toshiba webform and phone support (and after going with them through every single UEFI/BIOS option and finding everything fine), they suggested to send the laptop to one of their service centers near me to better analyze the problem.
But since this looks like a potential UEFI bug to me on my peculiar model, sending the laptop to them would be of little use: they would likely acknowledge the error in UEFI, but until Toshiba releases an update, nothing could be done; plus, I would have to go through the hassle of sending my laptop to another town and be without it for some days (the nearest service center is not quite near to my town).
By the way, I have the latest BIOS (UEFI actually) version: 6.70.
Well, congrats for reading all this :), sometimes I'm too verbose!
    Now the questions:
    - Does anyone with the same model have this problem?
    - To Toshiba forum personnel reading this: if it's a problem affecting this model, is Toshiba aware of the issue and/or doing something about it?
    - Are there any workarounds other than using/setting up UEFI-enabled boot media? Yes, I know UEFI is the long-term solution and eventually every OS will support it, but right now not every OS does and I NEED to boot from other media for various reasons.
    Thanks in advance!

After enabling or disabling the password a reboot is required to make the secure boot enable/disable option either available or unavailable.+
    > +...+
    > +I selected the 'reset to factory defaults' option on the exit menu. The machine was then able to boot from USB and DVD. The boot order was also respected.+
Hi everyone, sorry for disappearing here, was busy... and couldn't carry on all the tests I wanted.
However, the good news is that what *michael_toshiba_forum* found apparently works for me, too!
*I loaded the setup defaults from the BIOS (UEFI) setup, and now it appers I can finally boot both CSM and UEFI media!*
Great find michael, thank you! By the way, USB sticks make and models now DO appear in the F12 menu while in CSM!
*EDIT:* of course, thanks to Tonny too, for pointing out the link to the other thread!
Didn't test all my media thoroughly, though. I'll post more accurate results as soon as I can.
However, while it looks like we have the solution to the problem, we still don't know the cause, and I feel this deserves to be investigated more.
Let me explain my point: I checked (and double-checked on the phone with a Toshiba tech) every +single+ UEFI setup option, and couldn't find anything wrong, as I said in my original post. One interesting UEFI feature is that it introduces "UEFI variables" (as I read online), and as far as I understand there is +not+ a way to interact with them in UEFI setup (at least not on my PC!). If the problem was a wrongly set UEFI variable, maybe doing a "load default" did reset both UEFI parameters +and+ variables.
And since UEFI variables are intended to be modified by programs too (unlike legacy BIOS parameters stored in CMOS), I think we may have some scenarios where programs could potentially trigger the problem again. *michael_toshiba_forum* said in his other thread that his problem was triggered after upgrading to Win8.1. Maybe in my case this is due to the second OS I installed (Kubuntu 13.04) just after buying my laptop.
Anyway, I'll do some tests again and do some research and report my findings.
IMHO, if my theory is right, Toshiba should create a README for this, the solution to this problem looks not so obvious (nor me neither Toshiba support thought about it).

  • Can I boot into Windows XP from a firewire enclosed Hard Drive? Boot Camp

I understand you can install XP (as long as it has service pack 2 or 3) on an Intel Mac using Boot Camp, but I was wondering if it would be possible to take a HD from a PC computer which already has XP installed, and, using an firewire HD enclosure, boot the Mac into XP from that. Would this be feasible?

Yes, but not exactly. The page says:
"Can I install Windows on an external drive?
No. Installing Boot Camp on an external hard drive is not supported."
But I don't want to install Windows, I want to boot my computer into it.
    It also says:
"External FireWire disks are not recognized by the Startup Disk control panel in Microsoft Windows. To start up from a bootable external drive, press and hold the Option (Alt) key while the computer starts up, then select the external disk."
I don't mind if external disks won't appear under Windows, as long as I can still boot into it.
I found another helpful post:bootcamp windows 7 Firewire external drive NTFS?
    Here someone writes:
"I still use Windows XP with my Mac but still never had such a problem with my two Firewire external HDs (one FW400 and one FW800).
And I did a lot of things with these
Partioned one for use with OSX and Windows (one HFS+ partition; one NTFS partition); copied my complete MP3-collection (180GB) from one external HD to the other; etc.
All without any kind of glitch or slowdown."
So it seems this person was successful in booting XP from an external drive. Windows 7 or Vista on the other hand will encounter problems booting, which that tread explains.
In another thread (Boot camp on an external hard drive) someone wrote:
"I believe there might be a way, I just haven't gotten around to trying this out.
    1) use disk utility to partition the external drive to ntfs (i think)
    2) attach this disk to a pc and install the OS
    3) install refit onto your mac
    4) attach the drive via fw800, or even better yet esata, to you mac.
    5) Start up your mac
    6) choose the win xp option from the boot menu
    7) install bootcamp drivers
this seems, in theory, that it should work."
So from what I gather, I think this method would probably work, I just want to know if anyone had any specific knowledge regarding this subject.
From here I only have two questions:
Is it possible to take a working drive from a PC which already has XP installed, and change the format to ntfs under OSX without damaging the drive or OS?
And, would I need a version of XP with service pack 2 or 3, or will anything do, since we are not installing it with Bootcamp, we are only running it under Bootcamp at this point.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi,
In theory nothing can stop you to do that. You have to disable the HDD before install OS on the mSATA. One important thing: The BIOS allows you to do that. I know Dell people have done that. At the mean time, the following article may help:

  • Can't boot to external drive from g5

Hi, I have a new 1TB firewire 800 external drive. I have 1 G5 with leopard 10.5.8 on it, but it had tiger on it at one point.
I installed tiger onto this external drive (10.4.4) However, after installing, I can't boot to the external drive.
I have tried going to the startup disk- it shows up in the options, but then just reboots back to my internal HD. I have also tried holding the option key down on restart, but the external disk doesn't show up.
Please help- I have put a lot of time and effort into this.

  • Can I boot up my Macbook from an external USB HD?

    Hello,
I was wondering if it is possible to boot up the latest Macbook from and external USB hard drive.
    Please advise.
    Thanks

That is incorrect GeeKay. I boot mine from a USB drive all the time, as do many others.
It is true that PPC-based Macs require a FW connection, but the Intel Macs can boot from either USB or FW drives.

  • Can you boot with Windows XP from an external drive?

Just curious really. If you have Windows XP on a bootable external drive, I know other PCs can boot from it, but can a Mac?

On a G5 or other PPC Mac, the answer is no (unless you count running XP with VirtualPC). On the Intel Macs, it's a different story, although I have no idea if they support booting from an external drive with Boot Camp.

    Hi.
I tried to install Windows in Bootcamp on my wife's MacBook Pro 15" 2.4Ghz (with OSX SL), but something went wrong in the process and I now want to start all over by erasing the Bootcamp partition entirely.
But, as I try to start up in MacOSX it just stops at the start sound over and over again.
Can't shortcut by force starting it from MacOSX (command-X), from disc (command-C) or as a firewire disc (command-T).
I also can't eject the Snow Leopard DVD from the drive bay.
All it does is trying to boot and making the start up sound over and over and over and....

Try starting in Safeboot and see if you get any further. To eject the DVD hold the left mouse button of a wired mouse on startup.

  • Can't boot my Powerbook G4 from a DVD

I am going to give my Powerbook G4 to a friend, so I thought I would wipe the drive and reinstall to OS. I was running 10.39. I started zeroing the drive and it locked. It finally quit booting from the DVD, so I connected it to my MacPro Intel with firewire and initialized the hard drive.
I reset the Pram several times and have tried to boot from the 3.9 DVD with C and option keys, neither will boot up from the DVD. The option key gives me 2 folders, 3/4 circle arrow and straight arrow. Clicking them doesn't get me anywhere.
I tried to load the OS from my MacPro but it won't let me, since I have 10.5 loaded on it.
    Any ideas?

    MaplegroveBob,
The flashing question mark folder means that the computer can not find a valid system folder to boot to.
What does it say "exactly" on the cd or dvd that you are trying to boot to? It should have an OS version # and say if it is a cd or dvd disk. Is this the original install disk for the PowerBook or a full retail install disk for 10.3.x Panther?
What happens when you reboot holding the "x" key down (without the disk you are trying to use in the drive)? edit: Strike that, as you said you wiped the drive so there won't be a system to bootup to. If the disks are the correct original install or a full retail install disk for 10.3 and it does not boot then either the drive is damaged or the disk your using is damaged I would imagine.
