  • Need a new mac pro! Can I boot MacPro 6,1 (mid 2012) with an internal HD with OS 10.6 (Snow Leo)?

5 hours after reading here: (so much information that says "yes" "maybe" "no".....)
I want and have to change my actual MacPro (late 2007) to a newer one, because without my business is over.
The newest one (end 2013) is not possible, because my other hardware is too old for that one.
    (still need Firewire and Rosetta)
So I decided to buy an older "classicle" MacPro to put my 3 or 4 pieces of 2TB HDD in...
    ...... But I still need Rosetta, -> OS 10.6
    My question is:
Can I boot a mac 6,1 (mid 2012) with a Harddisk with 10.6, I take out of my old machine?
yes? anything to be aware or to update? (answeres here say mostly yes, sometimes, never ...)
For sure I am interested in the latest model..... but will it work?
If not:  I will buy a mac 5,1 (mid 2010).
Anything to be aware or to update, if I pull in my HD with 10.6 out of the old model from late 2007?
I don't want to downgrade to SL !!!!!!!
I just want the Possibility to boot internal from the original OS on the first drive and from 10.6 on a second drive !!)
(This good old Power Machines (all in one) will be jewels next year.....)  ;-)

For example the Mac Pro 2010 CAN run 10.6.4 or later BUT--
--- the last "Full Retail" 10.6 DVD conatins 10.6.3, which will not boot. You need a different Mac of just the right age to Install on, [starting from a Full Retail DVD, not a DVD from a different model] update to 10.6.8, then swap the drive over.
The assertion has been made that the 2012 model (which runs 5,1 firmware) is indistinguishable from the 2010 model (which runs 5,1 firmware) as far as Hardware and therefore as far as what Mac OS X it can run. EveryMac.com agrees that this model will run 10.6.4.

  • Macbook MID-2012 crashing every day (Kernel Panic)

    Hi!
I hope I'll find some help here.
My new Macbook (MID 2012) is crashing everyday. I read that this might be a RAM issue (maybe due to the fact that I installed 16GB 1600Mhz of Crucial), but this would really surprise me because I only got this issue after some weeks of the RAM replacement. In some cases I need to restart my MB a couple of times to get it run again. Also pretty weird, I got a similar issue when using Ableton Live, my trackpad an my keyboard freezes (computer continue working), and then I need to restart it a couple of times, and one of the two USB holes isn't working anymore (and to get it work again I need to reboot it again). For information : I have an USB hub with a MIDI keyboard connected, an external HDD, an USB Key, a Dongle, a Keyboard and a Mouse. I'm also using an external Audio Card, connected to the second USB hole, and a 27'' Screen. I really would like to reproduce theses crashes, but it's always happening at some random moment (not necesseraly due to a RAM overloard or so) Maybe some issue in my configuration.... Any thoughts ?
    Thanks in Advance !

Before you do anything, finc and remove the following kernel extension:
    com.avira.kext.FileAccessControl          1.0.0d1
...it could be anywhere but your root System>Library>Extensions would be a good place to start. If you can't find it, download the free "EasyFind" from the Mac App Store and search for "avira." Once you move the kext (to a Desktop folder, for example) reboot and see if you're still having kernel panics.
    Good luck,

  • Yosemite random reboots on macbook mid 2012

Well I've read thoroughly all the posts related to this kind of issue and it seems it affects a wide range of devices. Either mac minis or 2011 macbooks and so on.
I would like to explain my experience and ask for any advice available. I am experienced with computers and OS's, even though I would not call myself an expert, but as an engineer I possess a certain amount of knowledge. So there it goes.
    TL;DR at the bottom
Macbook pro mid 2012 13". Default 4gb memory installed, I added a Samsung EVO 830 SSD in 2012 when I bought it, never had any problems with it.
After a couple of weeks after upgrading to yosemite (november '14) I started noticing the macbook resting on login screen after a reboot. No crash report, no message visible of any reason. As I was installing some special software to do some work related to a lab I was working at the time, I thought it was software related. MS Word and Excel often crashed and I had a couple of problems with other programs. Then it started doing it while I was working, so I decided to check things out. The system freezed for some seconds - 1-2 minutes and proceeded to reboot. Sometimes a hard reset had to be performed.
I decided to perform different installations with different options in order to identify the problem:
Reinstall Yosemite from recovery mode: same result, random reboot, no specific app in use, either Xcode, Safari, or just resting idle with just finder.
Format disk and install yosemite applying time machine backup: same result, random reboot, no specific app, and so on.
Format disk and clean install, manually installing the same main software installed previously: same result, random freezes and reboots.
Format disk and clean install, manually installing essential apps (mac app store only): same result, exactly the same result.
Always with the latest OS version available, and with TRIM enabled and disabled, to discard issues with it. PRAM and SMC resets all along.
During all the testing, the console has not shown any crash report or kernel panic related to the event. After every reboot, console would not show anything special before the boot_time line.
After looking for solutions on different forums, I noticed a pattern on some cases that implied a wake on lan or a handoff, or wifi issue. I tested on different networks, disabled and enabled all options commented, with no effect.
    Entering
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq 'n Cause: -' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'
on terminal 90% of the time returned errors -128, and some -112 or -2, but they would not be logged to every freeze, just some of them. By the time the
As they may indicate a hardware error, I decided to proceed with the warranty.I bought the Applecare extension when I bought the computer (expiring this summer) so I talked to Applecare about the issue. As there is not an official Apple Store in my town they pointed me to an ASP in my city. They noted all the issues I commented above, gave me a case number to deliver to the ASP so they would have all the information.
I brought the computer to the ASP, gave them the case number (which they totally ignored, the employee seemed oblivious to what a "case number" was) and expected them to find the error. As I noticed the freeze could be sometimes forced via waking up the laptop, I made them a demo. I had ran already the apple hardware test and any hardware tests I was aware of. Etrecheck came out without issues or anything worth mentioning, so I thought they might have specific apple tools to identify hardware error.
They told me they could not find any error on the computer, but that they found errors in the SSD, swapped it with one of theirs to test and no issues found. Good, I thought, at least they found the issue even though all tests run on the SSD by me did not show any trace of it. They charged me 25€ for the service as the SSD was not part of the original computer. As I had been experiencing issues for some time I did not care. I asked them for some kind of report to check the error to provide to the SSD manufacturer, Samsung, as they offer 3-year warranty on SSD's and it had not yet expired. The report said "errors in disk", plain and simple, I asked to talk to the technician for extra info, but he could not remember if it was "corrupted sectors" or something else.
Contacted Samsung, sent my SSD in, and in 4 days I had a new (refurb maybe) SSD same model same size at my door. During those 4 days I reinstalled my old  original HDD. As it had a few miles on it (using it as external disk) it was really slow and sometimes it would freeze but the whole system was always dragging, so it could be also failing. Worth mentioning that when swapping disks I noticed the ASP had messed up the position of the small screws on the back of the computer. They did not seem to know there are 4 shouldered screws and 3 regular ones.
I put the new or refurb SSD in, clean install and do some testings. First day everything ok. Proceed to install software. Seems ok. After a couple of days the first freeze and reboot appears. After a couple of PRAM and SMC zaps, events seem to be reduced to a minimum. Even though the system is not completely stable, and I am not quite satisfied with the uncertainty of the freezes (in the middle of a presentation is not the best moment to have one), as it's freezing 1-3 times per week I consider it reasonable.
Time goes on, freezes start to appear again. Sometimes while booting, sometimes on login screen, sometimes on heavy usage sometimes on idle. I still follow all threads related to similar issues, in case a fix appears. All sleep / wake / wifi on - off on sleep tests have been performed.
Now the issue seems to be reduced to two kind of events: random freezes and reboots, and errors while booting. None, and I mean zero of the reboots or freezes has ever had a .crash or any system diagnostic reports related to the hour or even date when the freezes took place. EVER.
While booting, it crashes and I have to hard reset 2-3 times. When freezing, 30% of the time it does not reboot, and gets warmer than idle state but cooler than under heavy load.
I usually zap pram and smc and then it boots normally. But I should not have to be doing that every time I turn it on.
I know its a long post, but it's something I have been following for 5 months now. It's not that I am unaware of different options to solve it. Zapping seems to be the way to go, but still the random freezes interrupt workflow and provoke loss of data.
TL;DR: same freeze and reboots as other people. No discrete GPU to relate it to. Default memory installed, SSD model working on 10.8 and 10.9 with zero issues. All software installation combinations tested. ZERO crash reports on console related to the hour or date of the events. Shutdown causes negative codes, ASP cannot find the issue.
Considering bringing it to Genius Bar, but undermines the purpose of a ASP and if they got the same tools they will not find the issue either.
Appelcare expires in June. Any options I am unaware of? I would relate it to the specific model of SSD under Yosemite if I was the only one experiencing freezes and reboots, which I am not.
    Thanks you

Boot into Safe Mode. If the problem ceases then you need to remove Virtual Box and the software that installed com.bluecoat.kext.bckd 4.4.1f20. If this does not fix the problem then make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • [SOLVED] Is Refit required for single-boot Arch on Macbook Pro?

I have a Macbook Pro 7.1, and now that the issue with a non-supported chipset has a workaround I am planning to create a single boot Arch system using the latest Archboot that comes with the 2.6.35 kernel.
If I understand well I need the non-efi grub combined with the firmware's bios compatibility mode if I want 2d/3d accelerated gfx, since that does not work currently with grub2-efi. One question I cannot find an answer to though is whether or not I need Refit and an EFI partition for this. The Arch wiki (nor the Debian/Gentoo/Refit docs) is not very clear about this. Is it only needed for multi-boot setups or for all setups that use bios compatibility?

Do you mean that I need to install Arch besides the existing OSX and  'bless' that arch partition from OSX in order to be able to remove all non-Arch partitions?
Veovis Muad'dib wrote:, and then make sure to never zap the PRAM..
Not that I was planning to do this, but does this remove the possibility to boot Arch?
Veovis Muad'dib wrote:As for if you can change BIOS settings, no.  You can change boot disk, but that's it.  What would you need to do in the BIOS anyway?.
I just thought it might come in handy for tweaking powermanagement, wake-on-lan, bluetooth and stuff like that.
litemotiv wrote:Also be sure to set your boot partition active if you plan to fdisk, EFI won't be able to see it otherwise.

  • Running out of storage on my macbook mid 2012

I had to delete a Yosemite partition I created on my mid 2012 macbook pro because the 16gig available filled up fast.
I check my HD and it was almost full to capacity, it shows I had 2.2 TB of photos and 1.5 TB of audio.
I don't know if this photos and music kept adding each time I sync my iphone or each time i log on to Facebook.
Anyway I would like to FREE UP THE SPACE can someone tell me how, and would I need to have 3plus TB of external DH to do this, or what??????

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Macbook (mid 2012, 9,2) has very poor performance since the day I bought it (less than 2 months ago)

    Problem description:
My macbook is extremely slow since the day I bought it (which was less than 2 months ago)…Came preinstalled with Mavericks and 4GB of RAM. Upgraded it to 16GB hoping that would help, but that did very little…then upgraded to Yosemite. That just made it worse. Formatted the whole thing and installed clean Yosemite. Still, every time I right click, I get the rainbow loading icon and it hangs. Every time I open any file, or click any app, it hangs for a few seconds, again with a loading icon. Every time I play a song on iTunes or even VLC for that matter, it stops multiple times, every few seconds. Feels like it’s “buffering” while I’m playing a song off my hard drive. It’s been bothering me for too long now…Any idea what the issue is exactly?

  • Can't boot Arch from external HDD

Hi, well first off this is not my first Arch Linux installation, I'm using Arch for a little over a year now (coming from slack). But this is my first attempt to have Arch on an external HDD.
Alrighty, the situation is as follows: A rather new computer (supports booting from USB devices and the bios is set to boot from removable devices first) with a built in HDD and an external HDD that's connected to that computer via USB.
What I did: I connected the external HDD to the computer and booted off a 2008.6 Overlord core-CD.
Arch-Live recognized the internal HDD as sda and the external HDD as sdb.
I partitioned the external HDD using cfdisk and ran mkfs.ext3 on it (I didn't use any switches with that).
I started the installer, set my mount points (I should mention I'm not gonna use a swap partition here), installed the packages, well just went through the installation routine and installed grub in the MBR of sdb (the external HDD).
Then I rebooted. And this is what doesn't work: When I boot that computer with the external HDD connected the computer completely hangs right before grub would come up. It freezes completely, ctrl+alt+del doesn't work, I need to use the powerswitch to reboot the computer.
So I put the Arch-CD back in the CD drive trying to boot into my Arch System on the external HDD. So I started typing:
    root (hd1,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sdb1 ro vga=773
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
When I try to boot off that grub tells me that there is no such device as hd1,0. The funny thing is, that the auto copmletion in grub works for the kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 but it doesn't for the device /dev/sdb1, in fact even root=/de<tab> returns a "unrecognized string" message.
So this is what I did and I can't boot off my external HDD, neither can I boot into my system on the external hdd from the cdrom.
    What am I missing here?

The harddrive you boot from is in my experience always hd0. Could this mean your external disc is hd2?
Have you tried chainloading from the installer cd to your external disc?

  • Can't boot Arch for installation. USB stick issue.

I got stuck. I tried to install arch on my dekstop, but booting Arch from USB stick freezes in same point, after running hooks. I tried with two usb sticks, new iso etc. Ubuntu was installed before without any problem from the same stick.
    It freezes after showing:
    Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201108 ...
[4.053579] sd 12:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page present
[4.053634] sd 12:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
[4.056259] sd 12:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page present
[4.059035] sd 12:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
In some attempts I also got this:
    ata_id[12376]: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/sdb': Invalid argument

Problem is sovled, but the solution is really courious.
In fact, there was no issue with usb stick. Display freezes on first showed lines and does not follow the rest. Arch booted successfully but I cannot notice that, because I still see first lines (messages from first post were just warnings). Switching FullHD, 16:9 monitor to old 3:4 display solved the problem.
It's really strange. Should I report it somewhere?

  • Can I take RAM from MacBook Pro 2012 and install in MacBook 2010

I am upgrading a MacBook Pro 2012 from 8G to 16GB of RAM
Can I take the old 2x4G RAM DIMMS and install them in my daughters White MacBook 13" 2010 (7,1)
    Thanks...

Your 2012 tech specs state 1600 MHz:

whereas the 2010 white Macbook takes 1066 MHz:
So, the answer would be no.

  • Can't boot arch installation media with nvidia 9600GT – nouveau error

    Hello!
I recently tried Arch Linux and was very pleased with the performance and distro philosophy. I've managed to install it on my laptop following the beginners guide. Though, today I tried the same thing on my desktop computer and can't even reach the installation command line. This desktop have a nvidia 9600GT graphics card installed.
I leave my process here for better understanding:
    Boot computer with installation media (I'm using the archlinux-2013.08.01-dual.iso);
    Select Boot Arch Linux (x86_64) option from the menu;
Kernel starts to boot and then it gives me the following right after the Triggering uevents message:
    nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:02:00.0] DMA_PUSHER - ch 1 [DRM] get 0x000000000 put 0x0000000000 ib_get 0x00000000 ib_put 0x00000001 state 0xa0000000 (err: IB_EMPTY) push 0x00406040
the boot process freezes and I have to manually shutdown the computer.
Just to be sure, I tried the same installation media on a different computer and it boots normally.
I'm thinking of swaping the graphics card temporarily just for the initial installation. After that I could install the nvidia drivers and connect this graphic card back on. But sadly I'm one graphics card short.
    Can you help me?
    Thank you in advance.

    cfr wrote:
    Welcome to Arch.
Try editing the kernel command line and adding nomodeset. This should force the OS to fall back to an alternative because nouveau requires modesetting, if I remember correctly.
Wow! That solved it! Thank you.

  • [SOLVED]Can't boot Arch after installation-grub use wrong uuid in bios

Hello I would like to ask for Your help and say hello. I'm new here.
I have one big problem with Arch. Can't boot it after base installation. The same problem with Arch, that was mentioned in this topic:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1294597
I have the same problem and the same error:
    No such Device: ad4103fa-d940-47ca-8506-301d8071d467.
Loading Linux core repo kernel ...
    error: no such partition.
    Loading initial ramdisk ...
error: you need to load the kernel first.
    Press any key to continue..._
I'm new here, and with Arch, could you explain me how to fix it? I tried the solution given in the link above, several times but with each time i have errors and warnings from the post 1 in mentioned topic. I installed my Arch from usb thumb drive. Maybe this is something to do with it? Also, my hard drive that Arch is installed on is being connected to a "raid card" named Adaptec, but during installation my disk is being found so i think that drivers is present and works ok, so it is not related to this, also there is no raid present, i use it only as a mean to connect to motherboard because there is not enough sata port, and because:
    https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/35626
he wrote that this error is also on virtualbox, so it is not my fault and Adaptec related issue.
    I haven't tried this yet:
    Sotanaht,
I had the exact same problem as you, but I was able to fix it by replacing the bad grub.cfg file with the grub.conf file found in the same directory. If you try this do not forget to back up your original file (just in-case smile)
because i don't know much about it, don't want to destroy data on my hard disks or to destroy my other distros (i use Ubuntu with derrativates such as Mint, Kubntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, and Slackware 13.37 and 14.00).
If you could explain it in details i would be really happy.
I could post something about my setup, please write what. My computer is:
    -AMD X4 PII 955 runinng at 3.2GHz
-4GB DDR2 runinng at base clock (800 if i remember correctly)
-about 7 hard drive disk connected to a sata ports, one adaptec drive that i mentioned above and one dvd-rom
    -nvidia GTX260
    -850W PSU Chieftec

It is wrong, the root partition is different than in this, we can see that this grub leads to wrong root partition, i posted my root partition at the bottom from /etc/fstab. I don't know how to fix it - i'm not familiar with the dos names (hd 0,5 and so on).
    Here is my /etc/fstab:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    # /dev/sdb2
    UUID=59603166-5d8a-4aaf-81f7-5a822fd630e5 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # /dev/sdb1
    UUID=20028674-d7e8-4bf4-8551-64f133641962 none swap defaults 0 0
    (END)

  • Can i install SSD into MacBook Pro 2012?

    Hi All,
I don't usually deal with Mac upgrades but i've been asked if i can replace the standard Hard Disk which is currently in a Macbook Pro 2012(?) model with a SSD storage?
My thinking is 'yes' as the SSD comes in SATA form anyway and the current Hard Disk is using SATA. So it shouldnt be a problem right?
Just thought i would ask in here as i'm pretty sure someone else has either done this already or confirm yes or no.
    Thanks a bunch!
    Lee

    Yes.
See my one and only user tip -> Upgrading your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive.
Call back should you have any questions.
    Good luck,

  • [Solved] Can't boot arch after merge linux partition

Before this i have issue with my partition table, but i can fix it with testdisk.
After that, i merge all my linux partition into one. I mean like this
Before i merge my linux partition:
    / >> /dev/sda3
    /var >> /dev/sda4
    swapfile >> /dev/sda6
    /home >> /dev/sda7
    My new partition
    / >> /dev/sda3
    swapfile >> /dev/sda6
i can't boot my arch after i backup and moved my home and var directory to /dev/sda3 with livecd.
    How to fix this issue?

    Solved by myself! LOL
I edit and remove /dev/sda4 and /dev/sda7 in my /etc/fstab file with livecd.
Now, arch boot without /dev/sda4 and /dev/sda7
