Can't boot into OSX from different Hard Drive

Hi,
I am having a problem booting into OSX.
I put my own HDD into my Macbook when I first got it and everything was fine, no problems. But recently I took it out to keep my data safe and put back in the old HDD and reinstall OSX Snow Leopard onto the old HDD. After this completed I put back the one I had purchased myself but upon starting the laptop a bar appeared at the bottom of the Apple startup logo and after disappearing the system did not get any further.
I put my my Snow Leopard CD after this to repair and check the disk and then came the errors that It was corrupt and could not be repaired and that I should try to back up as much data as possible.
My question is, is there anyway to boot from this HDD again without reformatting it? and if I do have to reformat it, can I place it into an enclosure to get the data off?
The HDD was working perfectly with no reported errors until I put in the old HDD and made a new installation on it.
Thanks for any help,
Francis

After looking for answers and phoning Apple I have ended up having to reformat. For those who also have this problem:
I have heard that running Disk Repair multiple times works, try booting into safe mode and try fsck in single user mode. My solution was just to connect the hard drive via USB so I could at least get all my data off of it.
Cheers,
Frank

  • How can I boot into PartedMagic from a USB drive on a newer MacbookPro?

    Hello,
has anyone successfully booted into PartedMagic (or Gparted) from USB drive on a newer (2014) Macbook Pro? If so how? I've tried multiple ways of "burning" my ISO file to the USB drive but in no case am I able to boot into it. I seems to freeze a few seconds into the boot process. Somewhere I've read it might have something to do with EFI but I am not sure.
Looking forward to your feedback. JW

These are mpeg files probably mpeg 2 which iMovie won't import without conversion. Will they open in Quicktime player? If so do a command i and see what the inspector says about the file. MPEG Streamclip is a free app that will convert the Mpeg 2 to .Mov which iMovie will accept although it does require a converter you buy from Apple at $19 I think. Other converters are available just google for them.

  • I copied all my CD's onto a hard drive.  Can I transfer each CD from the hard drive to my iPhone either wirelessly or by direct connection?

I copied all my CD's onto a hard drive.  Can I transfer each CD from the hard drive to my iPhone either wirelessly or by direct connection?  Do I have to make a playlist for each cd and then transfer it to my iPhone?

When you buy your new iMac you will be able to have the installation process transfer all your applications, data (including music, pictures, documents, etc) and settings to your new computer. In the past that was done via Firewire. I'm not entirely sure of the process with the new iMacs that don't have firewire. I think it can be done via ethernet and probably via tha thunderbolt cord using a firewire adapter but you'll want to check that out.
With the your new computer properly connected to your old computer, the initial booting of the new computer will include the ability to move everything over.
If for some reason you don't want to do that (smart if you have some horrible software issue that is causing problems) you can connect your old computer to the new one and start it in Target Disk mode where it will be seen as a hard drive. You can then manually copy over all your music and import that into iTunes (and any other data you want).
Somebody here will surely point you to directions for connecting an older iMac with no Thunderbolt to a newer iMac with no Firewire.

  • How can I erase deleted items from the hard drive?

How can I erase deleted files from the hard drive?  Will my machine run faster?

If you've already deleted the files and emptied the Trash they are already, in effect, erased. At least the disk space they occupied is now available.
To be able to offer help we need more information about which Mac you have, which OS you are running, how much RAM you have installed, how much hard disk space you have available, etc.
Go to the Apple Menu>About this Mac - copy and paste the contents of the report here (deleting the serial number of your machine). Once we have that info, I'm sure someone will have some suggestions.

  • Can not reboot into OSX from Windows using Bootcamp assistant

I'm having a bit of a problem with rebooting into OSX from Windows on bootcamp. Clicking on the icon in the system tray produces a message that Windows can not find the OSX disk. Trying to open the Bootcamp preferences also generates an error. I have no problem getting back into OSX if I shut down Windows and restart the MacPro while holding down the option key. This is with a Windows 7 install on Bootcamp, but I had the same issue with a previous install of Win XP. I nuked and paved OSX and the WIndows disk between installs so my current problem is not carry over from the XP install.

My bad I should have been more clear. The problem is actually with a XP install via bootcamp, my Win 7 install is in VM Ware Fusion.
The XP install is on a second drive. Since you asked about this I'm assuming it may be the reason Im having problems.
The error is I get when trying to access bootcamp via the Windows control panel or by right clicking the sys tray icon is - "An error occured while trying to access the start up disk settings. You may not have privileges ...blah, blah, blah. I only created one account and I have enough privliges to change admin stuff in windows so I cant see privliges being the issue. I reassigned the OSX partition a new drive letter and rebooted windows but this didn't help.
The only drivers I installed, other then updating the video driver, are the bootcamp drivers

  • Can I store 80 000 pics from different hard drives on iPhoto on a Mac Mini?

I have some 300 GB of photos and short iPhone-videos on a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and a number of different hard drives. I think I have approximately 80 000 items.
    1.   I would love to have all this stored in one single place, can I buy a Mac Mini and just move everything to iPhoto on it?
    2.   Can I connect this Mac Mini to my Samsung TV and view the pics there?
    3.   Or should I use my Apple TV to connect the Mac Mini to my Samsung TV?
Or does anyone of you suggest any better solutions?

  • Can't transfer iPhoto Library FROM external hard drive to iMac

I just bought a new iMac.  Before I said goodbye to my old computer (a MacBook), I dutifully backed up my iPhoto library onto an external hard drive.  Upon setting up my iMac, I easily accessed the iPhoto library on my HD, but I didn't import it.  I was able to see all photos, albums, etc.
But when I went to import the entire iPhoto library into my iMac's hard drive (into the Pictures folder), it wouldn't import.  A mesage comes up that says "Preparing to copy" and the blue-and-white bar just spins and spins, without actually copying anything.  So, it's weird -- there's clearly communication between iMac and external HD, but I can't take the iPhoto library off the hard drive to make it my new computer's iPhoto library.
    Any hints?  Thanks.

Have you tried restarting your machine?

  • HT201250 can I back up files from one hard drive to the other hd using time machine?

I would like to back up my files automatically from one hard drive to another skipping the computer backup. If anyone knows anything on how to set it up, I would like your help
    Thanks!
    Ruta

If you want to copy one external disk to another external disk, and you want an exact copy, then you might consider Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.  Either of which will make an exact duplicate of the disk.
If you wish to have Time Machine include an external disk as part of your normal Time Machine backups, that means just including the external disk as part of your Time Machine backups.
If you mean run a One-Off backup of the external drive to another external drive using Time Machine, I would go with CCC or SuperDuper.
If you could give some more details about what you are trying to do, how often you want to do this, what kind of information is on the drive being backed up, how often the data is being changed and thus how often you want to do this disk to disk backup, whether you want to have the incremental backups offered by Time Machine, or if you just want a copy, and anything else you can think to tell us about your situation and the problem you are trying to solve.

  • Can't boot into OSX or Windows after installing boot camp

    I used boot camp assistant
Clickced on the "32 gig" parititon size button... It did its magic, then asked for a Windows XP Disc.
I put the disc in, and the system rebooted.
    Upon reboot, XP install began
Got to the hard drive part, and it said "install on C: 130 gig unpartitioned space" (my drive is 1 terabyte). I thought it was a little odd since I clicked "32gb" on boot camp assistant, but I went ahead.
XP Went through install, and rebooted. Upon reboot, it simply booted to the XP Install Disc again and wanted to go back through same install. I ejected XP Disc, rebooted, and nothing starts up now.
I put the Leopard install disc in... Booted. It says there are no places to install Leopard to. I open disk utility, and all I have right now are:
disk0s1 (811gb) (which should be my mac disc!)
disk0s2 (259.4gb) - ??? This doesn't make sense, the drive is only 1tb, so the 2 partitions combined shouldn't equal more then 1tb!) This could be my WD Passport drive, but this still shows even with that unplugged.
It says that it is not mounted, if I try to mount it i just get an error saying "Mount failed - try running disk first aid and then retry mounting".
Disk first AID won't let me run, the repair disk button is greyed out.
I don't know what to do at this point, does anyone have anything that might be of help?

I've just escaped Boot Camp ****. Went to Boot Camp and it didn't start up as it has for a year.
It jumped to checking the XP hard drive and would not recognize the keyboard. No input possible. Finally got to XP and it restarted all over again before I could select starting up with OS X. Went through this a dozen times or so before I was lucky enough to get out of it and start in OS X using an OS X install disk.
What keystrokes are used to bail out of Boot Camp when it fails and start up in OS X?
I'm afraid to try to fix XP in Boot Camp unless I know for sure, as I'm visiting my folks and haven't brought all my software disks with me.
If all else fails, can I wipe the Boot Camp partition and reload XP?
Or must I wipe the whole drive and reload everything?
Thanks be I have a new fireWire 1 TB coming, but am also waiting on an ordered FireWire cable to arrive.
    Thanks

  • How can I recover my data from my hard drive

About 2 weeks ago I was uploading pictures to my computer when it froze.
I turned it off by holding down the power key, and started it up again.
It hasn't gone past the apple screen and the spinning dial since.
I have tried all the troubleshooting myself safe boot, firewire everything you can find through these threads.
After failing with all of these methods I took it into the apple store and they said that it would not appear on there machine.
So I have removed my hard drive and put it into an external case and hooked it up via usb and replaced my hard drive in my macbook.
Now when I hook my old drive (with all my files on it) up to my macbook now the old drive shows up but it will not show any of my files.
IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN RETRIEVE MY FILES ASIDE FROM GOING THE ADVANCED DATA RECOVERY ROUTE AND SPENDING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS?????

From your long tale of woe, I take you are not backing up your data. Bad idea that.
After everything you have done it sound like your disk is in need of some kind of data recovery
Before going to a service you might try Data Rescue, http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews.com/mac-recovery-software/dat a-rescue-review.html first. While there are some free data recovery program available, remember you get what you pay for.
If that doesn't work then send it out to a service for recovery
Then you might want to start planning a backup solution for the future
Remeber lose of data is a certainty. The only question is when

  • Can't open iphoto library from external hard drive

I'm backing up my enormous iPhoto library to two external hard drives in order to free up space on my computer. Before deleting the photos permanently from the laptop, I wanted to double-check that the copies of the library I made on the two externals would actually work on another computer, should something happen to my laptop. When I plug my external hard drive into my laptop and use option+click on iPhoto to choose which library I want to use, it opens up the library from the external just fine, no problems. However, when I plug the same external into a different Mac computer and do the same process, I get the immensely frustrating message of "You can't open photo library blah blah blah changes have been made using newer version of iPhoto". However, both my laptop and the second computer are running the exact same version of iPhoto (the most recent), so that can't (or at least shouldn't) be the problem. I found suggestions to rebuild the library, which I did, but the same result occurs. I double-checked to be sure that neither computer needed updates (they didn't).
When I plug one of the externals into the second computer, though, I can open up the package contents of iPhoto library and all the photos are visible, so I know the information is all there. But I don't want to lose my albums, etc.
So do I just delete the copies of my library from the externals and try it all over again? I'd prefer not to, since I have 40,000+ photos, and that takes a while.

To reinforce what Larry pointed out both Macs must be running the same version of iPhoto.  And the external HD must be formatted as shown in this screenshot:
and don't forget the ignore ownership.

  • Boot into something other than hard drive

I'm having problems partitioning in boot camp, so I read that I should defrag my drive. I'm getting the error because it can't move certain files.
So I'm using iDefrag, but it won't let me use most of the defrag options because I'm using the disk it is defraging. I tried to boot using the leopard disk that came with my macbook, but I can only use certain programs while this disk is open.
What do I need to do to boot into something other than the hard drive to defrag?

    Hi again,
found this procedure http://www.bradbergeron.com/2006/11/howto-install-and-boot-os-x-on-a-flash-drive / to install and boot a basic OSX on an USB Memory Stick.
Since this How-To was written for OSX Tiger you might consider getting a bigger sized USB-Stick for the space OSX Leopard needs.
