Can't boot live cd strange loop
when I boot teh installation cd it gets to where you can chose boot the live cd tools etc.. when I try to boot the live cd it gets in to some kind of strange loop. looking like this:

and then it repeats
is it trying to read my windows xp partition?
with x86 version you get another kind of strange loop but I would rather get x64 working even if I have to use another distro.
Rows without "Yes" tell about "devices" that exists but do not require any special kernel module to work. So the only one probably not working is nVidia video chip. But using nvidia official drivers it should work.
Anyway, having windoze on HDD should not be a problem booting ArchISO... Maybe CD is written with errors or hard disk (or its controller) is taking the last path in its life?

My MBP with Lion is having 2 problems and I:

- Was wondering if they are connected.
BTW, tried vastly googling both and read quite a lot in different forums and the Internet, but couldn’t come with a solution, just succeeded to live with. (Something like marriage)…
The first problem: if I leave my computer to go to sleep and it does for a long time, when I try to wake him up, I get either the SBD (Spinning Ball of Death), or stuck in a black screen. Need to push the power button.
What I do is, before going to sleep/long time away of computer, either close the lid or Apple icon-> Sleep and that’s fine.
Second problem: can’t boot into Safe Mode.
Immediately after the startup chime I press the Shift key, after 2-3 seconds get the login window, key in my password. Instead of logging in, it goes to a screen with the Apple icon, underneath the Apple spinning gear and underneath that a loading bar.
After quite some time the loading bar disappears, the gear goes on spinning for a LONG time, then black screen, startup chime again and login window. Then, when I key in my password, it just logs in as usual, no safe mode.
I tried to write in Terminal “sudo nvram boot-args="-x"”, BIG mistake! It got my computer into a never ending loop of those screens. I don’t exactly remember what eventually got me out of this loop (I think I booted from a clone, then started with the Lion CD and wrote back “sudo nvram boot-args=""” in Terminal.
I also tried reinstalling the OS, all that without any successes.
Any ideas anyone?

Exactly the same process.
And now I realize something interesting:
I didn't realize that lately the startup login window, instead of bringing my 3 accounts, brings only mine (in the preferences pane after I login they appear, as usual, but not in the login window).
Now, I am constantly backing up to 2 separated external hard disks an incremental backup to a bootable clone. If I boot from one of them it does bring the 3 accounts.
Do you think I should stop bothering about troubleshooting and just erase the hard disk, install the Lion from scratch and that's it? -
Mavericks can only boot in safe mode
In can only boot my Imac 27' (end of 2009) in safe mode.
The problem started in Lion, when the computer suddenly froze.
I upgraded (in safe mode) to Mavericks 10.9.2, took away all Launch Agents and Daemon that are not Apple (both in System and User's), done all the permission repairs, reset memory, fsck and turn the plug off the computer. The only thing I was not able to do is the hardware test (for some reason, the command + D to access the internet testing is not working). I have no external devices or cables attached.
My 2TB hard drive is divided in 3 partitions. I have got 2 user accounts.
Even with all this, I can only start in safe mode.

I tried to reinstall the machine, but during the install process the installer isn't able to create a swap partition. Later, I got the error message "stale NFS file handle" at the console (I don't do anything with nfs here). Same errors with kvm-87 and 88.
I tried to install other distros, but any of them failed to install on the virtio disk one way or another.
Everything works with kvm-84. With kvm-85 libvirt (which I am using) wasn't able to boot from a virtio disk. Note that libvirt has nothing to do with the error/bug described above. This happens since kvm-86 with plain kvm started from the command line, too.
I am switching back to kvm-84 for now.
To reproduce:
Get a Debian Lenny qemu/KVM image and virtio disk and try to boot it. Or try to install Debian Lenny on a virtio disk. There were other errors with other Distros, so I suspect that there is somesthing wrong with kvm since 86.

There is no updated aur package so downgrade it is.

Can't boot Arch from external HDD
Hi, well first off this is not my first Arch Linux installation, I'm using Arch for a little over a year now (coming from slack). But this is my first attempt to have Arch on an external HDD.
Alrighty, the situation is as follows: A rather new computer (supports booting from USB devices and the bios is set to boot from removable devices first) with a built in HDD and an external HDD that's connected to that computer via USB.
What I did: I connected the external HDD to the computer and booted off a 2008.6 Overlord core-CD.
Arch-Live recognized the internal HDD as sda and the external HDD as sdb.
I partitioned the external HDD using cfdisk and ran mkfs.ext3 on it (I didn't use any switches with that).
I started the installer, set my mount points (I should mention I'm not gonna use a swap partition here), installed the packages, well just went through the installation routine and installed grub in the MBR of sdb (the external HDD).
Then I rebooted. And this is what doesn't work: When I boot that computer with the external HDD connected the computer completely hangs right before grub would come up. It freezes completely, ctrl+alt+del doesn't work, I need to use the powerswitch to reboot the computer.
So I put the Arch-CD back in the CD drive trying to boot into my Arch System on the external HDD. So I started typing:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sdb1 ro vga=773
initrd /boot/kernel26.img
When I try to boot off that grub tells me that there is no such device as hd1,0. The funny thing is, that the auto copmletion in grub works for the kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 but it doesn't for the device /dev/sdb1, in fact even root=/de<tab> returns a "unrecognized string" message.
So this is what I did and I can't boot off my external HDD, neither can I boot into my system on the external hdd from the cdrom.
What am I missing here?The harddrive you boot from is in my experience always hd0. Could this mean your external disc is hd2?
Have you tried chainloading from the installer cd to your external disc? -

MacBook froze while working, had to power it off, since then I can't boot any more.

I have a MacBook Pro 13" from 2010. It's running Lion with all the latest updates.
Today I was surfing the web had several apps open and was chatting on skype. Suddenly I noticed Skype hung itself up, it said "Not responding" then 30 seconds later non of the apps would respond like it was all frozen. I could only move the mouse cursor. It felt like the system was overloaded. Another few seconds later also the mouse froze.
I gave it a few minutes hoping it would come back but nothing.
So I held down the power button to turn if off.
I restarted and when it's booting I see the white bar, as if it's trying to recover from the last crash, but about 10 seconds into booting, it just turns completely off. I never even get to the login screen. I left the laptop off for a few hours. I tried again, same thing over and over. Laptop completely turns off after about 10 seconds into booting.
I also have windows 7 installed over bootcamp, so I tried loading that, works without probem! I am writing this post from Windows 7 now. I opened up windows explorer and had was browsing through the Mac partition, it all works, I get full read access. Guess it's not a hardware issue then -phew!
I have no idea what I can do to fix that problem since I can't even get to the login screen.
What can I do?
Can it be a Kernel error? Or some kind of error while it tries to recover from the last crash?
Is there any way to tell Mac not to try to recover from the last crash and just to a clean boot?Will repairing the internal HDD delete access to Windows 7? that's that I am worried about, because if it deletes the windows partition and won't fix the mac partition, then I am screwed, then I can't boot into anything.
A Backup of my files? Well I do use DropBox to live sync my Music, Picture, Documents and Project folder. However there are files on the desktop and probably some apps and related files in the Application Support folder which I'd like to backup. And since I have full read access from my wndows partition to my mac partition I will just back then up now.
How big are the chances that the Disk Utility will break access to the Winows 7 partition? -
Can't boot from OSX cd - Kernel Panic or bad CPU?
Greetings, All! I've looked at all the articles related to this that I can find, here and on other sites, but have not been able to solve the problem. Here's a list to briefly describe my issue:
-Got Prohibitory sign on my MDD Dual 867 when I tried booting into OS X (10.3).
-Tried all the resets (PRAM, PMU), re-seated RAM, took out RAM, etc.
-Trashed OS, and tried to re-install, but Mac won't boot from DVD (10.3) or CD (10.2) - just get the spinning wheel and finally Prohibitory sign...
-Ran Hardware test to loop for about 17 hours; nothing, all fine.
Then I just recently noticed that when I run Digital Performer 3 (OS9), it usually shows 2 usage indicators for CPU performance (1 for each processor) but now only shows one. So, I'm thinking a processor may have died, or become unseated, or something. But I read somewhere, on one of the forums, that it isn't likely for one of a pair of processors to go, or if it did, the other wouldn't be able to function solo. But if that weren't the case, and the Mac can run on 1 processor, why would that keep the Mac from booting from the OSX disk?
The Mac still runs fine in OS9, though it does seem to be a little slower when I do processor-intensive operations in DP, and sometimes hangs on startup, and seems to have some "sleep" issues (won't wake back up sometimes...). I don't know of any way to check if both processors are functioning in OS9. Does anyone know of a utility that will do that? Or if there's one in the OS (The Profiler only shows processor speed)? And would that cause the Kernel Panic and keep the Mac from booting in OSX? It's very frustrating. I appreciate any help or tips anyone may have to offer. Peace, GelonHey Guys!
I think I know the "why", but not the solution...
I have a PowerMac G4 400Mhz Dual Processor, and some day I had the same troubles. No boot on OS X, but I can in OS9. Checking the Open Firmware commands, I saw one of the processor marked as "dead". So, (dont't ask how) I removed one processor from the logic board. Now I got the same "Processor dead", I can boot on OS9, (with an alert for the processor) but is stable. No boot in OS X.
So, what I suposse (having the same reports in PC computers trying to run OS X) is that the OS X checks for the compliance of the System for running. When a processor fails, the OS X can not recognize the system as valid (as in some PC computers happens) and can not boot. I also suposse if we can get a "patched" OS X for PowerPC or patch the firmware in any way, we can work with just one processor. Or, buying a new processor for the Mac.

I Desperately Need Help - Can't Boot my iMac
Greetings Everyone. My apologies for making my debut on this board with a desperate plea for help but I think I just killed my iMac right in the middle of an important project. I'm accessing this board with my laptop PC (and you know I'm in a bad way when I have to revert to anything PC!)
I was trying to move some photos from iPhoto onto a CD. One photo would not move - computer said it was 'busy.' I couldn't delete it or anything so I force quit to see if I could start over.
The machine did reboot okay, so I thought perhaps I should try to restart in in OS9 (Im using 10.3.8 or 9 (can't remember and can't boot to confirm.) because I read somewhere that sometimes rebooting in OS9 will correct whatever has 'hung' in X - for lack of a better description.
Well, that's when it crashed. When I try to boot it the entrance sound makes its bong and the the light blue screen comes on and just sits there and does nothing, no matter how long I wait.
I tried to force boot it by holding in the start button until the list of instructions came on the screen. Tried typing mac-boot as instructed, and nothing happened. I tried three times. Then I tried shut-down and it did shut down.
That's as far as I can get. I hold in the start button until it makes a beeping noise, then it bongs, then the blue screen comes on and just sits there.
Have I fried my machine or is there any hope?
Can you tell I'm just about frantic???
Thanks for your patience. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live in a fairly remote rural area with no Mac dealers within 200 kms - so I'm really stuck on this one.Tried a few more tricks and finally got it to boot.
I held down the P R Apple & Option keys and waited for the second chimes. Nothing happened.
I disconnected everything but the mouse and keyboard and tried rebooting again.
Lo and Behold it worked.
I think the HP printer cable might be faulty, but don't know for sure what is actually going on.
This whole problem started because my printer suddenly died. I tried to remove then reload the software but kept getting the message that no device was attached, even though it was.
So I decided to save all my hard drive info onto CD's then reload the system software. Everything came to a halt when I couldn't delete the 'busy' image.
So for now, I'm back in business. Whew!
If anyone has any idea what on earth is going on I'd sure like to know. Do printer cables just go bonkers for no reason? And why would an image from iPhoto be 'busy' when I tried to delete it. Is that image doing something naughty that I need to know about?
I think I need a nice cold beer! -
Can't boot after update, getting "microcode: failed to load" error
After restarting my computer, it's no longer able to boot, and just prints a continuous stream of errors. The first error it gives is "microcode: failed to load", and I looked it up and found that I should just have to install amd-ucode. Easy enough, except I can't boot. I tried booting into the latest live-usb image, and after connecting to the internet, mounting the partition to /mnt, and running
# arch-chroot /mnt pacman -S amd-ucode
I get the following error
error: amd-ucode: signature from "Allan McRae <[email protected]>" is invalid
error: failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupted package (PGP signature))
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
I'm not very familiar with how chrooting works, especially not arch-chroot, so I don't trust myself to fix the problem without breaking something. I was thinking of just putting the package on a flashdrive and installing it with
# arch-chroot /mnt pacman -U amd-ucode-package-name
Should I do it this way or am I misunderstanding how arch-chroot works?
By the way, this is an issue with my desktop. startx stopped working on my laptop right before I went to use my desktop and rebooted it, so after this issue is fixed I'll be making another thread about my laptop >_> Any help is much appreciated.Ok, so I managed to install amd-ucode with pacstrap. That got rid of the microcode error, but I'm still getting

The numbers on the left just keep counting up, but the repeating error message stays mostly the same. What's odd about this error is that the disc it says it has a problem with isn't even the disc with the OS on it. When I have time I'm going to try physically removing /dev/sdc from my computer to see if the error stops.
Oh and there won't be any thread about my laptop issues. Turns out I filled my whole HDD, which was causing startx to fail. -

EDIT: i tested /dev/sr0 and the result:

mount: /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only.

When the new one is done create a hashsum of the new burn and compare it to the iso you used to burn it with. I only say this because a few times in the past when I had sr0 errors while booting live cds it was because the disk was messed up and I had to burn it again.

U410 - Can't boot with Win 8.1 OR Ubuntu

I have been trying to fix a dual-boot issue with Win 8.1 and Ubuntu, and I've totally screwed up my boot record. I was advised to look at the instructions below, and it might help me straighten out my boot situation. After following these directions, I can no longer boot into anything now.

I followed the directions outlined above, and now I can't do anything. When I start it up, it boots into Windows Boot Manager with a single entry for Ubuntu. When I selected that, it gives me the usual warning that it can't find the .efi file or .mbr file. The (really) bad part is that I can't get to the UEFI Firmware Setup (i.e., the old BIOS menu), so I can't boot from a USB - I'm stuck. When I boot it up, it does flash for a split second, almost like it goes to another screen (the UEFI menu?), but then goes into the Win Boot Mgr.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get into the UEFI firmware settings? I've tried to hit F12 (and every other F* combination) during boot, but it still just flashes for a second, and then goes into Windows Boot Manager. If I could get to the UEFI settings, I could boot from USB into a Windows rescue/rapair USB device, but I can't get to it at a moment, so I'm in limbo.
If anyone has any suggestions, it would be muchg appreciated, as I'm stuck and can't do anything.

0 seconds", this is really strange, have you pasted the full pathping result here? Or as I mentioned before, you can try to pathping your own ip as a test. What is the result if we use other tool, simple like ping to Google website? Make sure
to install latest driver for network adapter, reset router, get latest firmware for router.

Can't boot to any OS X Install Disk
I have a strange problem and this is going to be long. I just added a 2007 MacPro to our Apple family and am having an issue that I can not get past. First, I bought it used and the gentleman that sold it to me described what he did to prep it for me. He wanted to make sure that his data was completely gone so he performed a secure erase on all three HD. One 150GB WD Raptor 10000 and two 700 GB Segates 7500. I should mention here that this system has two DVD drives, one an Apple Super Drive, the other an LG BlueRay read write DVD. Once he did the erase, he said he was not able to reinstall because he kept getting a "can not install a lesser OS" type message. So he removed the WD Raptor and cloned it externally then replaced it.
Initially I was getting the ?folder icon on boot for a few seconds then it would seem to find the HD and boot up fine. However, any attempt to boot to any OS X install DVD results in the gray panic screen to reboot. I have the original disks to this system, which are OS X Tiger and I have a retail OS X 10.5 Leopard and neither will boot to do a fresh install.
I have done a PRAM reset and that has gotten rid of the ?folder screen. I have also booted to a Super Duper Boot Backup and performed a restore to the WD Hard Drive, repaired permissions and it boots great! Even reformated the two larger drives with disk utility and all runs extremely well. One other note... I have even been able to run Boot Camp, set up a partition on one of the large Hard Drives and successfully install Windows 7 64 bit Beta. So it does read DVDs.
But, I can not boot of any OS X install disk???? Below is a copy paste of the problem report that is generated after each failed attempt.

That Tell's me 100% you do have the same card the

that needs OS X 10.5.2 or newer to boot from the install DVD. I went though this man, by myself is was not fun call 800-69-2773 (800-MY-Apple) ask for costumer care tell them it is the Old OS & newer GPU not the Mac Pro, So they can't try to say you need Apple Care for what in truth they never told people. I know you will get a replacement Mac OS X Leopard Install DVD 10.5.2 or newer it is white & has Replacement DVD Not For Resale on it.

[SOLVED] Can't boot computer (device not found)
On boot (both Normal and Fallback) I get:
Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-uuid/d3c4f22d-65c6-4e06-bcc1-752db552061
ERROR: device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/d3c4f22d-65c6-4e06-bcc1-752db552061' not found
Skipping fsck
And then it drops to a shell, and I need to use "exit" to run, but it requires me to choose a boot partition (I tried exit /dev/sda1 and others but it says invalid number).
I know there are many posts on that, but since I believe this is a specific issue (I updated kernel last night with -Syyu'd), I decided to make my own.
Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

About that, I have some questions...
1. How long can it take?
2. How dangerous is it?
3. Is it really what I need?
4. Can I lose files? Since I can't boot, is there a way to save them?
5. In order to find out what my root partition is, can I use Gparted?
5.1. Can I not use an Arch Live CD and use Ubuntu for example? It's much easier to do it.
6. How do I know if I have a separate boot partition? I have all /dev/sda's, and one of them is boot I think. Don't we all have?

Also, and I want to make this clear, I did *not* use force on pacman, I never do.
So, what caused?
I just updated it normally, like I always do, was it some arch error everybody else experienced?
1) The time to boot the live cd, type the commands and like 30 seconds for mkinitcpio.

3) Since it's in the Q&A: most probably.
4) You can always lose files. Just boot a live cd, mount the partitions you want to save and the partition you want to save it to and copy (or rsync).
5) I don't think so, unless you gave your partitions a descriptive label. Just mount partitions until you find the root.
5.1) I don't think so.
6) If you find your root partition: if /boot is empty, you have a separate boot partition. You can check your fstab to see which one.

Black Screen following install, can't boot back into Lion
Hi all,
I just tried to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 via Bootcamp on my Late 2010 iMac (21").
Following installation (it completed installation fine) right before the part where the dialogue says 'Setting up your computer for the first time', the screen goes black and nothing appears to be happening.
I cannot boot back into Lion by holding Alt- it does nothing.
Holding C to boot from disk keeps brigning me to the same Windows Error Recovery screen where I am prompted to 'Start Windows Normally' or in the various Safe Modes.
Trying to start it normally results in this hanging black screen, trying to start it in safe mode results in a dialogue saying 'Setup cannot be completed in Safe Mode' and restarts the computer.
Obviously this is quite a tricky situation, I'd appreciate any help to make some part of my Mac usable again,

Any action available to me in Windows results in the same loop of black screen hanging.
I'm not even sure where I can go to try and change any settings...Reboot, hold the option key down when you hear the chime, release it when the boot manager appears. Select OSX as the startup. Once started go to Apple>System Preferences>Startup Disk and make OSX the permanent choice until you get the Winjunk running, even better, remove the Winjunk partition and stay in the light.
You might find it useful to read this, all kinds of basic information regarding OSX, no need to not know what to do next.
