Can't boot up from bootable clone drive. Why?

My PPC PowerMac G5 computer HD is backed up on an external Lacie bootable drive. The computer recognises the Lacie as a bootable drive but fails to boot up from it. What could be the reason?
The external drive has always functioned properly and continues to function normally - I can access it, and read and write data to it through the Finder. However, if I try booting up from it (via System Preferences -> Startup Disk) it only offers a grey screen. I've tried a number of times. A grey screen with the Apple symbol in the middle - nothing else. One time, instead of the Apple symbol, it featured a circle with a diagonal inside it.
The Lacie is connected via a Firewire 800. Its Partition Scheme is 'Apple Partition Map'. In Info 'Ownership & Permissions', "Ignore ownership on this volume" is checked (not be me) . I've tried booting up with it unchecked too.
Any ideas as to what the problem might be?
Thanks,
iHope

My question was:
The computer recognises the Lacie as a bootable drive but fails to boot up from it. What could be the reason?
Having investigated further I've found the answer: the volume won't boot if the "Ignore Ownership on this Volume" is checked (in the Get Info pane for the volume). If this was checked when creating the clone, unchecking it doesn't help.
This is another example of a problem created by a hidden default. Bad programming, bad attitude. They should be banned! ALL options should be selected by the user so that there is complete transparency.
Apple have just wasted a great deal of my time! I made the clone using the Restore Option of Disk Utility. There was absolutely no mention of this crucially important option. Thank you Apple.

Can anyone boot Leopard from an external hard drive on a G5 iMac PowerPC? How?

Yes, you can and I do. The proviso is that the external hard drive is connected by firewire, as a PPC Mac cannot boot via USB.

  • Can't boot OS9 from external HD

I have an external HD with OS X4 and OS9 installed on it. Classic will open, but I can't instal an OS 9 app because the app says I need virtual memory. I tried to boot OS9 from the external drive to install the app from OS9, but it is not a start up option in system preferences. I also can't start it from the c key. I have a full retail version of OS9.
Does any one have any suggestions? Do I need to install an earlier version of OS X?

    Allan,
    Thanks for the response.
When I upgraded my iMac G5 to OS X5 I thought it was time to finally get rid of all of my OS9 apps. I originally had them on an external bootable HD. It's now Thanksgiving and I had a few holiday graphics in Corel Print House 2000 I would like to use (OS9). I thought I would reinstall OS X4 and OS9 on the external HD which I did. OSX4 boots fine and classic opens but I can't get it to boot from OS9. I can't reinstall Print House because it says it needs virtual memory to instal.
Any ideas how I could load Print House onto my external HD or how to open a .cxx file? I wonder how I got this app on the external originally.

Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

  • HT1338 If I have OS 7.5 installed on an external drive, can I start up from the external drive in that OS when my macbook pro is 10.7?

If I have OS 10.6 installed on an external drive, can I start up from the external drive if I have 10.7 installed on my macbook pro?

Provided that the MBP supports booting from that version of 10.6, and the install was from a retail disk (not a different Mac model), then yes. If it's a newer Pro that came with Lion, it may not boot to 10.6.

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

can not transfer date from one hard drive to another, I keep getting an error because I have two of the same file names and one file name is in caps and I cant change the file name. My original external has an error and needs to be reformatted but I dont want to lose this informations its my entire Itunes library.

Sounds like the source drive is formatted as case sensitive and the destination drive is not. The preferred format for OS X is case insensitive unless there is a compelling reason to go case sensitive.
Why can't you change the filename? Is it because the source drive is having problems?  If so is this happening with only one or two or a few files? If so the best thing would be to copy those over individually and then rename them on the destination drive.
If it is more then you can do manually and you can't change the name on the source you will have to reformat the destination as case sensitive.
Btw this group is for discussion of the Support Communities itself, you;d do better posting to Lion group. I'll see if a host will move it.

    Yes.
And will it restore if the hd isn't even there? Like what if it got stolen or destroyed.
    Also yes.
Directly-connected external drives (ie, USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt) are not backed-up by default.  You must remove them from the exclusion list in Time Machine Preferences > Options to get them backed-up.  (Network drives cannot be backed-up.)
And they must be formatted for a Mac -- any variation of Mac OS Extended.
If the drive is connected, you can browse or restore normally -- just go to the folder or document in question and Enter Time Machine.
If the drive is not connected, it's a bit different.  See #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • How can I move music from a hard drive to iphone

How can I move music from a hard drive to iphone?

Import it into an iTunes library and then sync the iPhone with that library. If desired, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down and create or choose an iTunes library on that drive.

  • If I subscribe to match, can I remove music from my hard drive and still listen to it?

I'm interested in Match, but want to know if the music has to be on my computer to access it on my iPod/iPhone?  In other words, once I sync my library (over 100,000 songs) can I remove them from my hard drive (of course having them backed up on my own) and still access them?

First off, if you have a library with over 25,000 songs in it, you will not be able to even sign up for iTunes Match.  When you try, you will get a message that you are not eligible.
No, you cannot selectively choose which songs go to iCloud to get around this 25k limit, iTunes Match wants all or nothing.
The way around this is to set up multiple iTunes libraries, each with fewer than 25,000 songs in it.  While this is inconvenient on your computer, if you send them to the iCloud this way and they will all be available on your iDevices.
Apart from that issue, the answer to your question is "Yes."
However, when you play a song, it downloads to your device or computer while it is playing and will stay there until it is removed again.  iTunes Match does not stream songs, it downloads them and plays them, although songs will start playing before they have been completely downloaded.

That model doesn't appear to support AirPrint (those that do are listed on this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356)
Have you checked to see if Lexmark have their own app in the store, or there are third-party apps such as Print Central For iPad and Print n Share which might work with it

  • My new HD with a cloned system and apps won't boot the G5 when installed. The clone drive is being journal formatted via usb with OS9 checked in disk utility. First time around, I didn't check OS9, and the G5 didn't boot from the clone drive. Advice?

My system is a G5 PPC with 2x 2Gig 64bit processors (dual core). 6 gig of ram on board, running OSX 10.4.11. I recently discovered the main drive was actually a laptop drive someone had stuffed in there! (The machine was given to me - yes, really). So I bought a nice new WD Caviar Black 500Gig HD. Hooked it up via usb adapter (G5 won't see it internally). Disk Utility saw it, formatted it with Journal option selected, but not OS9 install.
After that, I cloned the data on the slow laptop drive complete with all the applications onto the Caviar HD.Sure enough, the G5 can see the Caviar HD with everything on it.
However, when putting the Caviar HD in where the laptop drive once was, the G5 would not see the disk at all.
So now, I'm reformatting the drive again but this time with OS9 checkbox ticked in Disk Utility. After this, I will install it into the machine alongside the offensively sluggish laptop drive, and as long as the G5 sees the Caviar HD internally, I will clone from there, rather than via USB hookup.
I hope this way the system will speed up! There's no way the machine is running as it can do with a pokey little laptop drive in it spinning at 5k surely!
I am assuming the Tiger 10.4.11 is genuine (I think it is - the X symbol is present on the folder), but I don't have the original disk...
Any suggestions? Has anyone had this experience?

Hi BDAqua... downstairs away from unit at the moment. It's a Western Digital Caviar Black 500Gig, twin processors, SATA3 / 6, 64Meg cache on-board... nice. Very quite with minimal vibration (slight).
However as I'm here I can announce I've solved the problem! The G5 had an original Seagate Barracuda HDD on board as a slave drive. I backed up the dat off that onto the Caviar Black via USB adapter. Then Disk Utility wiped the Barracuda safely.
Then, I installed SuperDuper! to clone the data from the sluggish laptop master drive onto the Barracuda; I also told SuperDuper! to boot the G5 from the newly image Barracuda.
After it had done the job I switched off the machine (it may well have rebooted - I was downstairs watching England fail at Eurovision Song Contest), took out the laptop drive and started up the G5.
Mercifully, it rebooted fine! All details and programs are intact and functioning right down to my screensaver.
I can report that the machine is noticably (considerably in the case of Logic8 and JamPack) faster and swifter at sourcing data.
Everything is backed up and I now have a speedier G5! Hurrah!!
I now have a spare 80Gig drive to hand in a caddy (originally a spare backup) that was made about the same time as the G5. It's my guess that it would fit the G5 internally and probably be seen ok by the system.
It's worth a try. The Caviar Black will have to go into a caddy and become my backup disk. It has a clone of the OS and all apps, so if something goes badly wrong, I'm safe.
Just a thought: The more advanced Leopard and Snow Leopard OS may struggle in G5's because the OS itself may require faster HDD's that cannot go into the G5 normally? I see many reports of Snow Leopard running like a bag of bones in people's G5's. Perhaps it's something to do with data retrieval speeds?
    I'm sticking with Tiger!

  • Can I boot mac from an external hard drive (internal hard drive hard drive closure)

    Model: Macbook Pro 2010 mid
    OS: OSX 10.9 Hard Drive: WD5000BPKT 500GB
For some reason I need to change my perfectly working internal bootable drive to external bootable drive.
I took out my internal hard drive, put it into closure, and then connected it to mbp with USB. But my mac cannot even recognize my external hard drive. It displays a folder with a question mark with grey background, which means it cannot find executable boot drive. I tried pressing option key during start up and nothing showed. Also, I tried resetting parameter RAM but still no luck. Any help will be appreciated.

The reason is somehow complicated and most likely be related to the question itself, so I did not write it down. But here is the situation.
I bought a new SSD to update my HDD. I found a software called carbon copy cloner, which could do a bootable clone. I tried to clone my original hard drive to SSD and turned out the SSD only worked when it was connected externally. After I seeking a while, I found a solution from CCC website: do the clone again with putting my original drive externally and the SSD internally (I think it is a bug of CCC.)
You may say, "why not use time machine" instead of using a third party software. My answer is time machine is too slow, and I have to reinstall the OS. My focus is why my internal hard drive does not work externally since it should work.
