Can't boot Windows 8 recovery CD via USB! (X1C)

Hi,
I can't boot the windows 8 recovery CD Lenovo sent me via a USB CD drive.
I've used all the combinations of legacy, secure boot and others etc. Am I missing something obvious?
When I boot it shows the boot menu with the CD drive as first piriority and I press enter to select and boot from this device however it just refreshes the screen and goes back to the boot menu straigh away... ??
How the hell can I recover my laptop?
J.

Solved it by using an external CD drive plugged into USB port.  By the way anyone contemplating using Lenovo Recovery disks for Vista operating system re-installation, note that the Wireless drivers do not get re-installed. I had to download these after from the Lenovo support site. The whole process took a day to complete.

can't sync itunes with iphone via USB, windows 8.1 system

Right click on your device under Portable devices and click on Uninstall and when the uninstaller box pop ups select delete the driver and click OK. Now click on Scan for hardware changes on top of the page and see if you get apple mobile device support driver under USB Devices and if not then disconnect your device from the computer and try to connect it to a different USB port and check also open control panel and select Apple Mobile Device  Support from the List and Click on Repair and check. If still the device is not showing under USB then uninstall the following services from your computer.
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if unable to uninstall ignore and move to next)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Restart your computer once after the uninstallation is completed and then download latest version of iTunes from http://WWW.apple.com/iTunes/download
Locate the iTunes setup file and right click the file and run the installation file as Administrator and let the installation complete.
Then check if your device gets deteced in iTunes and if still the device is not detecting in itunes then go to device manager and see under Usb if you can see Apple Mobile Device Support Driver and continue with the step. 5 of above given link in my previous post. And if still thedevice is not showing under USB then right click on your device under potable device and click update driver and first check for updates automatically and see under USB if you see the driver now and if not then go back to device under portable device select update driver, let me choose driver from the list, Have disk, browse file in the following location " C://Program Files/Common Files/Apple/Mobile Device Support/Drivers and select usbaapl file and install the same (if you can't find the driver on above location then look for the driver in Program Files(x86) instead of Program files and if you can't find usbaapl then look for usbaapl64 and complete the installation and then restart the computer and check if your device get recognized in iTunes.
Note: when installing the drivers keep the iTunes closed till the drivers installation is completed.

iPhone contacts: file transfer to Windows 7 via USB-cable
My iPhone can communicate with the computer only via USB-cable (no mobile data, no bluetooth, no internet, no outlook). As I want to get the phone to the "doctor" I want to save specifically my contact data and calendar details on the computer (OS: Windows 7). How can I solve this task? I will appreciate your valuable information, thanks.

Using the iPhone, the USB cable, iTunes and Windows Contacts, sync the iPhone contacts to Windows Contacts. That will save them there. They are also included in the iPhone backup made in iTunes, and if you use iCloud.
I'm sorry, I missed the calendar part the first time I looked. For calendar, you need a supported application on the computer (Outlook) or if you use iCloud, you can use the iCloud contacts and calendar app to sync.

  • Bootmgr problem - can't boot windows

    Hi.
Please help me with my boot problem. I cannot access my computer, windows will not boot.
    I am running windows 7.
Upon starting up my laptop, I get the message "bootmgr is compressed - press ctrl alt del to restart"
I have searched for the problem around the internet, and it seems to be due to people compressing their hard drive to save space and cancelling half way through.
I have not done this- I was playing around with a SLIC Loader program and installed it by mistake, now I can't boot windows.
I have tried using my windows 7 DVD to repair the startup but it didn't work.
I have also tried to restore but I did not set any restore points.
I have tried using some command prompt bootmgr reset procedures which also did not work.
Can I somehow get a backup of bootmgr and restore it?
    Please help
    Thanks

    Hi
I assume your boot manager is damage. Probably by installing the SLIC Loader program
My idea was simply; boot from Win 7 disk and then try to get into the command console.
There you could use the command FIXMBR
But if this will not help then you should take your Windows disk or Toshiba recovery disk and should reinstall the whole system again.

  • Dear Community, how can I connect SCSI tape recorder via USB to iMac ? Is there any adapter/converter on the market now ? Cheers, Marek

    Dear Community,
how can I connect SCSI tape recorder via USB to iMac ?
Is there any adapter/converter on the market now ?
    Cheers, Marek

    Thanks Jan.
Actually the reason to use Quantum SCSI tape recorder is to back-up big amount of data (propriety movies footage) both on PC (what is quite easy, using SCSII host adapter with VHDCI 68 connector) and iMac what seems to be not easy. All my search by Google leads to that conclussion, they finished production of SCSI-to-USB or FireWire because somebody stopped to produce chips to covert protocols. So even buying noe second-hand adapter, no guaranty it's still working with Lion (nobody is developing drivers anymore). Strange is, nobody or just a few are using SCSII (Ultra 320) devices (while the transfer is not bad, 320 MBps what is 2560 Mbps, so the only limitation is tape recording (some 80 MBps) not an interface. Using compression mode I can (and I do) record 1,6 TB of footage data. However quite slow, is safe and cheap, comparing with any HD storage solution. USB 2 is much more limited.
I'm using Time Capsule for buck-up. But even 3 TB one day will be full of data, then old back-ups will be eaten by new once, what is not good idea for archives. I'm using another 2TB NAS HD (2x2TB RAID 1), but this is also going to be full soon.
Of course, you are right, the option is another machine (OSX,Win,Linux or Solaris) equipped with SCSII controller. But this requires another machine, just for back-up time to time, and in practice iMac folders must be shared with that small auxiliary machine because amount of data practically excluding even temporary data collection on auxiliary machine. And it must be transfer by wire, not WIFI, my only network. Tape recording is in my case really good, professional solution, isn't it?
Anyway, if somebody has similar requirements as me, and found the solution for SCSI, please let me know. So far, follow Jan's idea, I'm thinking about some embeded mini PC, fanless, equipped with slot for SCSI, with SOME smart system on-board, to deal with iMac for type recording. The option is previous Apple model, but to be honest, I became Mac/OSX user 4 years ago. I fell in love with Mac, but my knowledge about previous models is based on Google....
My desk becomes full of boxes. Do you know how big Quantum TC-L42BX is ? Is very big. And now another box.....another keyboard....another screen... And one small adapter could solve the problem. Eh....
    Best regards,
    Marek

  • HT4818 I have installed bootcamp that worked properly.  Then I have partitioned the OS X 10.8.2 and installed another OS X 10.8.2 and I have got two MAC boot options and Bootcamp disappeared from the Option menu. How can I boot Windows again and keep both

I have installed bootcamp by the bootcamp assistant and worked properly.
Then I have partitioned the OS X 10.8.2 and installed another Mountain Lion System and I have got two MAC boot options and Bootcamp disappeared from the Option menu. However, Bootcamp still remained in the Startup Disk in the System Preferences. When I tried to boot Bootcamp using the Startup Disk it did not boot and received a message that there is no bootable device. I have not lost any data and can read Bootcamp partition from both OS X systems. Please advise how can I boot Windows / Bootcamp again? Thank you.

Recommendation 1: Use a VM for this. It's essentially a giant C.F. to do this with native booting, and is potentially fragile.
But if you're going to ignore that and do this anyway, realizing that it can break anytime in particular with OS upgrades, and that it's very difficult to impossible to resize the three volumes once you've installed the systems:
    1. create three partitions, setting each to be the size for OS X copy 1, copy 2, and Windows respectively. The Windows partition needs to be set to MS-DOS format (actually FAT32) which later in the Windows installer you'll reformat as NTFS. Do not use Boot Camp Assistant to resize/partition the disk, it simply won't work for this use case.
    2. install OS X copy 1
    3. install OS X copy 3
    4. Use gdisk (available at sourceforge) which is a command line only application, to create a new hybrid MBR adding only the last partition (Windows) to the hybrid MBR and setting it to be bootable. As a concequence you will not be able to see/share either OS X volume from within Windows. The Windows NTFS volume will be visible from within OS X.
    5. Install Windows to the only partition its installer should see (confirm size), you'll need to format it NTFS first, and I suggest using the fast format option if available.

With 16GB, it will try to create 16GB hibernation file, 24GB page file, and need 20-30GB for the OS, plus room for temp, cache, applications, 9GB just temp to install SP1 update(s).

  • USB ports stop working after windows 7 installation via USB  Boot camp

topend macbook pro retina 15 model purchased in Jan 2014 ,upto date.OS X 10.9.1
tried installing windows 7 ultimate through boot camp using USB. the installation is fine and smooth. windows 7 ultimate is properly installed but the point where you install the support software through USB all the USB ports die out just before logging in into windows. Also a red light on the headphone jack goes on. NO USB flash drive orUSB device is operational or in other words detected by the mac. Hence neither can I  finish the support software installation which has all the necessary drivers nor connect to the internet . tried the SMC/NVRAM reset as instructed by the apple support but no change in the situation.
USB ports fully operational when boot in MAC os .
Another problem I face is when I try connect my iphone 4S to macbook pro via USB it keeps connecting and disconnecting and makes the charging sound repeatedly . The same iphone can connect to other laptops flawlessly.
    please help .
    Thanks

Since you just bought it, you may want to make a Genius Bar appointment and let them diagnose the issue. Use your warranty. Bring your phone and cable along too.

  • I have Win. XP Pro, can't boot windows, no recovery / reimages, Win. repair can't fix, need prompts

I inadvertly used the disk sanitizer on my laptop and now I cannot  boot Windows or anything else.  I do not have any system images, or recovery disks as this PC was given to me  I have used a repair disk from my HP Pavilion Windows 7, which does get me as far as system recovery options.  The system repair cannot fix the problem and sends me to HP recovery manager the only option I am permitted to choose is run computer checkup, when I click on this it asks me to open a command prompt.  Can anyone walk me through what prompts to use?  I have tried and sfc/SCANNOW and it says that I have a scan pending which requires reboot to complete.  I cannot start Windows.  I do have a license for Windows XP pro, but I do not havde the installation disk.  Any help would be great.

Thanks for the replys. After much gnashing of teeth I realised the problem was my keyboard wasn't working in BIOS and eventually remembed I had switched my mouse from the PS/2 slot to a USB port. Switching back solved everything.
I suppose future 'legacy free" PC's will have to install usb drivers in the BIOS.  Thaks again!

  • My iMac can't boot Windows 7 From USB while my Macbook Pro can do it

I install Windows 7 64 bit and rEFIt into a USB hard disk and hope to boot from my iMac 27" (2010 Mid). However, it shows that no boot deivce is found.
If I plug the SAME disk to my Macbook Pro 17" (2009 Mid), it can boot Windows 7 without any problem.
I tried with Linux and get same result, iMac says no boot device while my Macbook Pro can boot it without problem.
I tried experiment for weeks and still can't get iMac work.
I think it is very abnormal and I wonder if someone can tell me how to fix it or any directory to solve this problem.

My iMac runs snow leopard and my MacBook pro runs Lion. Both of them are updated with latest updated. I just get one external USB hard disk with Windows 7 32 bit installed and magically, my iMac can boot it from rEFIt. However, I don't know what makes it works. I tried to make same configuration, software and steps on other USB hard disks for hundreds times but I can repeat it again. All other attempt can make USB hard disk boot on MacBook Pro but not iMac only.

  • Can't boot from Recovery or USB Install Drive

    Hi Folks,
My (mid-2011) MacBook Pro [Mavericks (10.9)] is not booting up – not matter what I try.
I've tried booting into Recovery (using command-R), Internet Recovery, and tonight I finally created a bootable USB install drive – no luck there either (pressing option to get to the startup disk manager). I can select which drive I want to boot from, but after selecting the USB drive and clicking on the arrow, I get to the gray apple screen (with the spinning progress wheel), and then it just stalls on a blank light gray screen (and the fans spin up). I've waited up to 45 minutes in this state, still nothing.
The same thing happens when I try to boot normally. I have Filevault 2 enabled, so I get to the user account screen – but after selecting my account, the machine goes from the gray apple startup screen to the blank gray screen and hangs.
I've tried resetting the NVRAM, booting from an install CD, etc., etc., and nada.
Does anyone have any advice where to go from here? I had hoped the USB install drive would be the answer, but for whatever reason, I'm simply having no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated – this is my main rig and I can't afford to have it down for much longer…
    Thanks so much!

What install "CD"?? (sure it's not a DVD disc) did you try.
Not sure it is related to the Filevault system but if you can't get the Recovery HD partition to boot that may be caused by having Filevault enabled.
Have you tried the Real Online Internet Recovery system? Hold down the Command + Option/Alt + r keys at startup and keep holding them down until you see a globe on the screen. If after you see the globe, or you never get a globe on the screen, and you get that same Grey color on the screen then you more than likely have a hardware problem. You should make an Appointment with your local Apple store Genius Bar for your Mac to be properly diagnosed.

  • HP Pavilion dv7-1285dx - No F11, Won't Boot Windows -- Recovery Manager PATH?

I am repairing an HP Pavilion dv7-1285dx for a friend. I have restored countless other computers but this one has driven me up the wall after 7 hours of trial and error and web searches.
    Here's the deal:
--The computer came with Windows Vista
--The owner upgraded it to Windows 7 this past fall
--The comptuer came in contact with malware and will not boot
--When booting, the computer will slowly attempt to load Windows, will make it to the "welcome" screen, then restart itself, creating an infinite loop
--I do have a recovery DVD for the computer; the owner burned it apparently in late 2010
--I am proficient in MS-DOS and am comfortable using the command prompt
--The command prompt is the only way I can operate this computer at the moment. I do not have access to Windows of any sort, let alone the web
--I do have two other computers here that are mine, both are Macs and one dual-boots into Windows; I do have a few flash drives and can burn optical media if necessary
The F11 key does not work on this computer to bring up the recovery manager. I know why, too--the machine was upgraded to Windows 7, which wiped out the connection between the key and the program.
My hope is that I can find the path of the recovery manager somewhere. There was a windows.old directory on the drive; I was able to change it to Windows (the existing Windows was renamed windows.scrap).
This enabled me to at least get to an OS selection screen. There were three options: 7, 7 (recovery), and Vista (recovery). None of them are able to get me into Windows. The Vista option states it is corrupt while both 7s will try to unsuccessfully repair themselves.
I can, however, access the command prompt through the Windows recovery program (NOT the HP recovery program, which I need to restore anything from either the partition on the D: drive or the DVD).
I did notice all of the files on the DVD were in .zip format once I got deep enough in a directory. I'm debating about extracting them on one of my other comptuers to see if I can just get them over on another device, but my only external hard drive is Mac formatted so I'll have to use a USB stick.
There have been queries about this out there referring to making the D: partition active. However, all of these solutions require Windows, which I cannot use. The same is true of downloads.
My biggest question--where could the recovery program be buried? I would be willing to bring files over on another device IF AND ONLY IF THEY DO NOT REQUIRE WINDOWS.
The SMINST directory within Program Files (x86) is not present.
Basically, I need a DOS-compatible, non-Windows, way to restore this computer.
I have no other Windows installation discs for the machine currently with me. Also, the COA sticker on the bottom of the computer is extremely worn and I can only read a few digits of it, so I can't use that for a restore I guess.
On a final note--the fan in this comptuer is extremely annoying; any way to turn it off besides just the switch in the BIOS that toggles whether it runs all the time?

You don't need to be in Windows to mark the D:\Recovery partition Active. Just boot with a utility cd with the disk management capability. If you don't have one_Scroll down on the page and get>> Bootable CD  If you don't have a burning app that can burn an ISO to cd get>> ImgBurn to burn the iso image to cd-a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is> Here. Once created, boot from it.
Btw-have you tried booting from his Vista Recovery DVD? With the first disc in the CD/DVD drive power on the laptop and immediately tap Esc to bring up the menu. Then tap F9 Boot options. Use the arrow key to move down & highlight the Optical drive then tap Enter key. (No key is needed with Recovery DVDs)

  • Satellite P855-34K can't boot in CSM mode from USB or ODD

Hi everyone, first time here for me.
I recently bought a Satellite P855-34K laptop, with UEFI, and I'm finding impossible to boot with UEFI set into CSM mode when using USB sticks or CDs/DVDs.
And yes, I obviously DID disable Secure Boot and switched to CSM boot in UEFI's setup.
Fast boot has always been disabled, too.
I tried to toggle USB3.0/2.0 and the activation of USB in sleep mode, no way.
Plus, that would make a difference for USB only, as I said optical media don't boot either.
All medias (USB sticks and optical) work flawlessly on other computers, and don't support UEFI (so CSM booting is a must for me). I even tried two USB sticks on another, fairly recent, Toshiba laptop of a friend of mine (can't remember the model right now), and CSM boot worked flawlessly on that (I obviously needed to toggle the Secure Boot and UEFI/CSM boot options).
Do note that USB sticks set up for UEFI boot DO work. In fact I have two OSes on my HDD, both set to boot via UEFI, and I installed the second OS with a UEFI stick.
One more interesting fact: UEFI setup (F2 at boot) displays USB sticks make and model correctly. UEFI boot menu (F12 at boot) DOESN'T do that in CSM mode, but DOES in UEFI mode (obviously sticks won't boot in UEFI).
I tried to search both on this forum and on Google, and I wasn't able to find an answer.
Talking with Toshiba webform and phone support (and after going with them through every single UEFI/BIOS option and finding everything fine), they suggested to send the laptop to one of their service centers near me to better analyze the problem.
But since this looks like a potential UEFI bug to me on my peculiar model, sending the laptop to them would be of little use: they would likely acknowledge the error in UEFI, but until Toshiba releases an update, nothing could be done; plus, I would have to go through the hassle of sending my laptop to another town and be without it for some days (the nearest service center is not quite near to my town).
By the way, I have the latest BIOS (UEFI actually) version: 6.70.
Well, congrats for reading all this :), sometimes I'm too verbose!
    Now the questions:
    - Does anyone with the same model have this problem?
    - To Toshiba forum personnel reading this: if it's a problem affecting this model, is Toshiba aware of the issue and/or doing something about it?
    - Are there any workarounds other than using/setting up UEFI-enabled boot media? Yes, I know UEFI is the long-term solution and eventually every OS will support it, but right now not every OS does and I NEED to boot from other media for various reasons.
    Thanks in advance!

After enabling or disabling the password a reboot is required to make the secure boot enable/disable option either available or unavailable.+

Hi everyone, sorry for disappearing here, was busy... and couldn't carry on all the tests I wanted.
However, the good news is that what *michael_toshiba_forum* found apparently works for me, too!
*I loaded the setup defaults from the BIOS (UEFI) setup, and now it appers I can finally boot both CSM and UEFI media!*
Great find michael, thank you! By the way, USB sticks make and models now DO appear in the F12 menu while in CSM!
*EDIT:* of course, thanks to Tonny too, for pointing out the link to the other thread!
Didn't test all my media thoroughly, though. I'll post more accurate results as soon as I can.
However, while it looks like we have the solution to the problem, we still don't know the cause, and I feel this deserves to be investigated more.
Let me explain my point: I checked (and double-checked on the phone with a Toshiba tech) every +single+ UEFI setup option, and couldn't find anything wrong, as I said in my original post. One interesting UEFI feature is that it introduces "UEFI variables" (as I read online), and as far as I understand there is +not+ a way to interact with them in UEFI setup (at least not on my PC!). If the problem was a wrongly set UEFI variable, maybe doing a "load default" did reset both UEFI parameters +and+ variables.
And since UEFI variables are intended to be modified by programs too (unlike legacy BIOS parameters stored in CMOS), I think we may have some scenarios where programs could potentially trigger the problem again. *michael_toshiba_forum* said in his other thread that his problem was triggered after upgrading to Win8.1. Maybe in my case this is due to the second OS I installed (Kubuntu 13.04) just after buying my laptop.
Anyway, I'll do some tests again and do some research and report my findings.
IMHO, if my theory is right, Toshiba should create a README for this, the solution to this problem looks not so obvious (nor me neither Toshiba support thought about it).
