Can't browse/navigate in time machine - finder window completely unresponsive
Since installing Mavericks when I go into time machine the finder window is completely unresponsive. I can go backwards and forwards and the date menu on the right seems to work fine, but I can't interact with the finder window. This essentially breaks Time Machine for me.
I'm running time machine via USB on a LaCie Terabyte drive.
I've restarted the machine and am about to do a hard shutdown, maybe that will help...
This is not a solution, ratehr it is an observation. Often when I open Time Machine, the screen appears to freeze, but if I wait (patiently or not so patiently) it will eventually "come to life" and begin paintingthe screen. The same thing often happens when I select a date back in history. I finally figured out the delay is caused by TM tracking through all the thousands and thousands of multi-links to create the model of the system at a given point in time. In other words LOTs of CPU cycles, not to mention disk I/O are being used. My case is aggravated by the fact I am using a Time Capsule and all of that I/O has to go through the WiFi network.

I recently starting receiving the error message "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to... An erro occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk. I have had no problems backing up my MacBook Pro 2011 to my Western Digital My Book Live through a Linksys EA4500 router until recently. I've made no major changes. I've ran a diagnosis on my back up drive with no problems. The Time Machine back up starts, but about after about 5 to 10 minutes I get the error message. I can see the shared drive in Finder. The light on the drive blinks while it starts the back up. I can see the shared folders on the networked drive. The backup process starts but for some reason it just stops. Can anyone help?
You can't repair a network volume in Disk Utility.
Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.) -
Can't browse back with time machine
Time machine seems to work properly till I try to browse back in time. I am clicking on the arrow that should bring me back in time, but nothing happens. I only see the initial today window. I have time machine on since December the 1st and it has back-up copies since then, so I assume that I should be able to go back into time, at least a bit.

Can't fully restore my Time Machine/Time Capsule Backup to my newly-wiped SSD/HDD
On receiving my leased, Bootcamp-enabled MacBook Pro, I saw that there were no installation discs for Windows or OSX, and that there were 2 partitions (or so I thought) for Mac and Windows: 375GB each. As I produce music using software in both OSs, I wanted to create a 185GB FAT-32 partition to store my sound samples, projects etc. I attempted to create this partition by resizing (halving) my Bootcamp partition in OSX Disc Utility. The first time I attempted it, resizing was possible, but after the new partition was created, I had problems booting and so had to edit my GPT in order to boot again. Once ‘fixed,’ (by deleting the new partition) I couldn’t resize the Bootcamp partition to fill the 185GB gap, and that 185GB was ‘lost.’ The Bootcamp partition was 375GB but its used space + free space added up to 190GB
So the other day, I tried to follow what I thought was a more logical approach, which I was *sure* would work. My plan was to:
Use Windows Backup (and/or Clonezilla, or Disk Utility) to store an image of my Windows partition.
Uninstall/wipe the Windows partition using BootCamp Assistant, creating 1 big OSX partition
Use BootCamp Assistant to re-partition the HDD for Windows, OSX and ‘shared,’ and then re-install Windows, leaving 175GB for shared music production files
Restore the image/backups (approx 70GB) and carry on as before.
During the process, I deemed that this wasn't possible on my system for a variety of reasons: My laptop already had 4 partitions (Windows Recovery, Bootcamp/Windows, Mac Recovery HD, and Mac) and my understanding is that the MBR of my SSD only supports 4 partitions in its Bootcamp + OSX-compatible state. I have never got this '5 partition' strategy working.
I was unable to restore my Windows partition after re-installing Windows via Bootcamp. As a solution, I then decided to wipe the OSX partition (at that point the only 'visible' partition on the disk) and in-place re-install Mac OS X, with a view to installing Windows after OSX.
Once I wiped my hard drive, however, restoring my files and settings, didn't work as expected. Time Machine backups etc were inaccessible after a normal re-install. Re-installing with file transfer at setup froze at the 10% mark, with an estimated 200 hrs to go. The option to try a full-system restore via Time Machine is greyed-out. Even the Migration Assistant failed at a similar point. On the occasions where it claimed to complete successful (most recent situation) it seemed to neglect files, etc., and I'm now stuck at this stage.
I can view files/backups in Time Machine but I can't completely restore my computer to the state it was on 18th May...and 11 days without a fully-functioning laptop is really annoying. I wasn't able to ‘clean’ *or* ‘in-place’ re-install OSX using my existing settings and so I'm frustrated that Time Machine isn't a flawless backup & restore process. Migration Assistant didn’t transfer everything. Can I get things back to the way they were?
Things that haven’t restored correctly:
None of my icon customisations at the top of the screen were there (DropBox, Evernote, Google Drive, Kuvva, the way battery icon was displayed
Safari: Top Sites, History, Plugins
Logic Pro: Downloaded sounds, presets (10+GB), recent items, plugin settings/AU manager
Mail: Settings (and I’m assuming, the downloaded/cached mail: 7GB)
Trash can: Empty
All recent item lists apart from cloud-based services like Evernote, Notes, contacts
iTunes library
Dock view and settings
Settings for most programs
And I'm sure there are more! Thanks Pondini; I'd hoped you'd reply. I'm still getting used to this tech, no can't even quote here.

If you mean you installed OSX and created a user account, then couldn't find the backups, that's because they're treated as being from a different disk, until you either transfer your data or do a manual "associatedisk". See the blue box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #19 for details.
Yet to try the associatedisk...didn't realise this was possible until reading your guides. The explanation makes sense now. On installing OSX it said transfers were possible after installation, so I put off transferring as the first 'restore' had frozen on 10%, thinking I'd do it afterwards.
Re-installing with file transfer at setup froze at the 10% mark, with an estimated 200 hrs to go
That sounds like damaged/corrupted backups. Try to Repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

The option to try a full-system restore via Time Machine is greyed-out.
You mean, on the Mac OS X Utilities menu on the Recovery HD? I've never heard of that. That should always be selectable, so you can specify where the backups you want are located. Nothing happens when you click it? Can you click the other options there?
Even the Migration Assistant failed at a similar point. On the occasions where it claimed to complete successful (most recent situation) it seemed to neglect files, etc., and I'm now stuck at this stage.
Also sounds like directory or file problems on the backups.
This is just when I go into Time Machine/Star Wars. I can't just go to the latest backup and click "Restore" (which I assume would just restore my whole computer/HDD, although I have no experience in this). I can only select files and restore them individually.
Time Machine isn't a flawless backup & restore process.
There has never been any such thing.
I bought into the Time Machine 'hype' and thought it was an easy and reliable tool, but was a lot more difficult to do a full restore than I thought.
Trash can: Empty
Correct. Time Machine (like most backup apps) don't back up trash.
All the rest should have been backed-up and restored. Do you see them in the backups? What, if anything, was excluded from being backed-up?
As a non-native Mac user, I'm not sure where all these things are stored...perhaps in Library? I think that not having the full hard-drive just restore annoyed me...I felt that backing up my whole hard drive every hour should've allowed me to restore everything to as it was without a hitch, and when it didn't work I just tried a few things before posting on here.
If repairing the backups finds and fixes things, you might want to try again.
Gonna try now
If not, and if you can see the missing items via the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display), you should be able to restore them selectively. -
Cannot navigate in Time Machine
I'm running 10.9.1 and I can't navigate in Time Machine.
No matter what folder is open in the Finder, when I enter TM, right before the screen changes to "starry night" the folder that is open changes to my user folder. Once I'm in TM, I can go back and forth in time to different snapshots, but I can't navigate to any other folder or drive. Clicking on any of the folders or items in the sidebar doesn't work. I can't click in the search bar to activate it. It's just stuck on my user folder.
I've tried repairing permissions, but that does not help.
Any help would be appreciated. This seems to happen if you launch time machine when the front Finder window is on your secondary display. Instead move the Finder window to your primary display before launching Time Machine.

Can use old macbook for Time Machine Backup?
Have an old macbook running snow leopard. Can I use it for Time Machine Back-up for my current macbook pro?
Boot your old into Target Disk mode, then plug a FireWire cable from your old to your pro. Presto! Your old's internal HD will appear in your pro's Finder as a disk on your pro. Time machine running on your pro can use it for backup. Time machine won't disturb its contents, except to add a potentially huge folder there, which will grow to fill the disk with copies of your backups. (Backing up, then) partitioning (and then restoring from backup) your old's internal hard drive will keep your pro's Time Machine from consuming all free space.

How can i recover mail from time machine
i upgraded from lion to mountain lion few month ago. i have been backingup to time machine since day one.
last week, formatted my mac, i tried to recover my mail by using time machine, it did not show up any date for recovery.
it there a way to import back these mail? or is there a way to recover it?Although you can restore messages from a Time Machine snapshot within the Mail application, it generally won't work with messages that were saved by an older version of Mail. In that case, you have to use an alternative method.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
~/Library/Mail/V2
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Inside that folder are subfolders representing your Mail accounts. The names refer to the email addresses you use. Decide which ones you want to restore messages from.
Enter Time Machine and scroll back to the snapshot you want. Select the account folders you want and then select Restore ... to... from the action menu (gear icon) in the toolbar of the snapshot window. Restore the folders to the Desktop, not to their original location.
From the Mail menu bar, select
File ▹ Import Mailboxes...
Import from the mailboxes in the folders you restored to the Desktop. The imported messages will appear in a new mailbox. Move the ones you want to keep wherever you like and delete the rest. Then delete the folders on the Desktop.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. -
Suddenly can't back-up with Time Machine
Time Machine has finally completely quit. I have followed most of the suggestions on various Apple forums, including reformatting the backup HD (several times), repairing both the back-up and main HD, settting spotlight to private, quitting Finder (using Tinker tool), etc. Followed Pondini's very useful steps repeatedly. I get different error messages from Time Machine Buddy most every time. The most consistent refers to indexing.
Below are the three most recent Buddy logs, in hopes somebody can help. Or suggest another backup solution.

Any help would be most appriciated.
This is my iMac (Late 2010) running OS X 10.6.8, backing up to a 1Tb Hitachi external HD, connected directly (no hub) via usb. It's possible that the system was keeping some piece of the I/O error in memory and, after the underlying cause of the I/O error went away, something you did juggled the system's brain back to a non-error condition.
You are absolutely correct to remain suspicious of your HD. While it's possible that changing USB cables or zeroing out the disk might have solved the underlying I/O problem it's equally possible that you have a failing drive on your hands that may only be showing ugly symptoms sporadically. There is a small risk that you will end up with two sets of damaged data if a drive fails during data transfer so it was very wise of you to order another drive.
You might want to consider using Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper! to make a clone to your new drive. Having a TM backup and one or more clones, all on separate physical drives, is a very effective backup solution. That's the combo I use.
When my Mini's internal drive failed it took about five minutes to boot from one of my clones, restore a few files from my TM backup, set TM to back up the clone, set SuperDuper to back up to my second clone. After that, I was fully back in business by booting from my clone which allowed me to get the Mini's HD repaired when it was convenient for me. -
External firewire drive, Time Machine, Finder crashes
I have an external La Cie FW drive that I use for cloning my OS and Time Machine backups (it's partitioned).
More and more I'm seeing this situation: sometime during the day Time Machine stops backing up, unbeknownst to me. At the end of the day, I try to eject the drives so I can unplug it, and nothing happens. Can't do it. Time Machine isn't, as far as I remember, "preparing" when this happens.
Sometimes combined with this is a Finder crash, sometimes requiring a forced restart. Sometimes it shows up when open and save dialog boxes won't show directory contents.
I've repaired all volumes more than once. Once--from the recovery partition--disk utility reported that my laptop's drive couldn't be repaired, and that I should reformat the drive. But upon running DU again, it was repaired. RAM checks out okay; Finder preferences have been trashed.
Because the problem doesn't show itself immediately, it's hard for me to figure out what is going on. Any thoughts? Would hate to have to reformat.Linc,
This is the rest of the Finder crash report. Above you gave instructions for the backup crash issue, but this crash was separate from that one. I'm thinking that if I can figure out why the Finder is crashing, that will prevent the subsequent error with the external drive, and avoid the problem with TimeMachine. Hope that makes sense.

10.6.8 update + Time Machine = Finder crashing ;-(
Hi All,
After installing the 10.6.8 update to my Mac Pro, Time Machine will hang on the "Cleaning up" process. Time Machine cannot be exited from the Menu Bar. The finder may hang during this process, if "Force Quit", the finder cannot be relauched. The following error is presented :
The application Finder.app can't be opened. -10810.
One user on the Forums suggested backing up and re-formatting the drive. I'm not keen for this course of action. I have tried to copy the Time Machine dated folders onto an internal drive, but due to either a. the number of files (?) or b. The size of the backups this also fails.
Please advise if there is a fix for time machine / finder that does not involve wiping the External Drive.
Mac : MacPro 8-core/8GB/1TB/sd
Sys : 10.6.8.
Drives being backed up:
System : ~150GB
Data : ~ 300GB
Archive (online) : ~100GB
TM External Drive : Western Digital MyBook 1TB
Interface : FW800
Thanks in Advance.
Matt.Hi Linc,
Thanks for the thought.
Downloaded the 10.6.8 update ( @ > 1GB !!) and re-run. No restart required. No change to functionality of the drive. Going to go with the Re-Format option. When Disk Utils is run - no problems are reported, yet accessing the drive not even with Time Machine switched OFF, can result in the Finder crashing (SWOD), force quit, then unable to restart Finder with the -10810 error.
So it would appear that this is not related to Time Machine but more :
External FW 800 drive vs. MacOS 10.6.8.
Keep you posted.
Matt. -
Can't get access in Time Machine to certain folders for any date earlier than current date/time, even when entering as Admin. Why do certain folders have small red "-" badge in lower right corner of folder icon? Here's a picture of the dilemma:
I've tried monkeying with priveleges using Command I, and changing users, but to no avail. Can anyone help?Right. Here's what the permissions look like from the Finder Command I:
I'm not sure what "Custom" means, but when I then try to change it to "Read & Write", it doesn't take.... just comes back as Custom. Interesting to note that not only am I logged into Joan's account where the data folder and file lives) to do this, but when I do it from my own account as Admin (dunc...mpster) I get the same result. -
Apparently I allowed iCloud to delete all of my calendar and reminder information from my Mac.
Can I restore it from iCloud, if not can I restore it from Time Machine? It sounds as though it's not in iCloud anymore.
You may find that restoring from Time Machine results in the information simply disappearing again. You might try this: disable iCloud syncing, restore from Time Machine, re-enable syncing and choose the merge option when presented. -
Can't connect to a Time Machine backup disk
I have erased my TM via Airport Utility
AirPort Utility 6.x: Erase an AirPort Time Capsule disk
So far so good...But now, I am unable to open TM, when I do it opens momentarily, then closes with message "Can't conect to a Time Machine backup disk".
I have turned off TM as I do not want to use the TM as backup..I want to use it as an EHD and transfer data to the disk manually (not by automatic TM backups).
How can I do this? No. It is not in Finder at all..only I can see the Airport Capusle (on the left side) under "Shared"...but this does not allow for any data transfer.
It should show under "Devices", and allow for data transfer....don't know how to fix this one.. -

Hello,
I would like an answer to this question as well. As this is a time capsule and not a Airport extreme question I think here is a better start.
I'm planning on getting a Time Capsule but have been backing up to a 500GB USB drive connected directly to my MacBook. It's probably only a month or 2 worth of back ups and not that big of a deal but if i get a Time Capsule and want to access the old back ups it would be nice to know if that is possible and if so how it can be done. I was thinking it might be possible to use something like Carbon Copy Cloner and move the back up file to the Time Capsule drive and erase the external that I have now, and have Time Machine use that file like it has been doing from the wired drive.
I will look around the posts and see if I can find anything. In the mean time if someone finds something it would be nice if you could put the link in this discussion.
Cheers,

i got a macbook pro 2008 and can not back up using time machine. it eject my external hard drive everytime. does anybody has a fix???
Does your external hard drive have it's own power supply? It should.
Is your external hard drive formatted with the NTFS file system? It won't work.
It needs to be formatted either with Mac OS Extended or FAT32.
(There are drivers available to add NTFS support to OS X but their quality is unknown, especially the "free" ones.)

Stop NAL from going offline?
We've got a few remote (notebook) users who use a VPN (Cisco) to connect to our network via their high-speed ISP. In the cases of many in one geographical area, their NAL goes into offline mode, and stays that way until a human sets it back to online
