Can't browse to Mac from networked PCs

These network problems have only occurred since upgrading from Panther to Leopard OSx.
I have multiple PCs running Win98 and XP and 1 G5 mac, networked through a netgear WGT634u router. The router shares an attached USB drive I've named Thor.
Before upgrading from Panther to Leopard the network worked perfectly. Since upgrading I have the following problem ONLY with the MAC.
1. Thor shows as a network drive. When I try to connect, it now requires a username & password. There is NO provision for setting a username/password for access to the drive other than for FTP. I can't logon as a guest - Connection Failed "This file server does not allow Guest access". Access to the drive has never required this before. The PCs can see and access perfectly! I can access using FTP CMD K.
Is there a way of forcing the mac to ignore the username/password the way it use to before?
2. All PCs show up on the MAC and can be successfully browsed BUT whilst the MACs WINS name (G5workstation) shows up on the PCs, when selected it errors with "G5 workstation not accessible".
I can use FTP again to connect BUT my preference is to use SMB. It appears to be rejected or timed out waiting for username/password authorisation. Could this be the problem?
Any help or leads would be most appreciated.

Just been trying to check on issues with samba and have noticed the following in the logs:
[2008/07/31 20:42:08, 1, pid=635] /SourceCache/samba/samba-187.7/samba/source/lib/utiltdb.c:tdblog(662)

tdb(unnamed): tdbopenex: spinlocks no longer supported
If i run the following in terminal:
% smbclient -U% -L localhost
tdb(unnamed): tdbopenex: spinlocks no longer supported

tdb(unnamed): tdbopenex: spinlocks no longer supported
tdb(unnamed): tdbopenex: spinlocks no longer supported
name_query: Realloc failed.
tdb(unnamed): tdbopenex: spinlocks no longer supported
And if I try:
% sudo serveradmin status smb
sudo: serveradmin: command not found
OR
% sudo sharing -l
Password:
sudo: sharing: command not found
Can anyone explain whats happening here!
It would appear that the samba server is NOT starting due some error. There are NO Problems browsing from the mac to other PCs or now the Netgear WGT634u fileserver.

Hi, I did manage to ping each computer (the mac from the pc and viceversa), also I did manage to "see" the mac from the pc windows network application; but I still have two issues:
    1) I still can't "see" the PC from my Mac, under share of finder....
    2) How can I do to access the mac from the pc? It keeps asking me for a user and password, should I use my user and password that I use in my mac? How can I add the pc user into my mac setting if I can't "see" the pc?

  • SOME Windows machines can't browse for Mac printers

I have a Mac mini with an HP 5940 attached to it. I also have three Windows machines hanging around: my laptop, my wife's laptop, and my wife's desktop. My laptop and my wife's desktop are running XP Pro SP2. My wife's laptop is running XP Media Center Edition SP2. My mini is running 10.5.3.
My laptop has no difficulty with the printer. It can print all day long, browse for the printer, anything I want to do.
My wife's machines cannot. They cannot browse for the printer (browsing ends at the computer entry for the Macintosh). They had a previously set up print queue (evidently this did work before), but cannot print using it; documents pile up on the PC.
If I create a new printer on my wife's machine and enter the \\machine\queue stuff manually, I am prompted for a username and password for the connection. Entering my Mac short username and password allows me to print from her machines, until they reboot. Upon reboot, the print queue no longer works; documents pile up at the PC, etc.
I can see no difference in the way the print queues are set up on all of the machines.
I do not know why my laptop can browse the Mac's printers while my wife's cannot.
I do not know why my wife's machines require a username and password in order to connect to the printer, while mine does not.
I do not know how to enter a username and password for my wife's printers upon rebooting without deleting and recreating the printer. Which means I have to type the lengthy \\machine\queue stuff again, because browsing doesn't work.
    Any ideas?

And I have now fired up the desktop PC I retired when I installed this Mac mini.
Like my laptop, it has no trouble browsing the printers on the Mac or printing to them.
So, I have a total of 5 machines trying to print over the network to the Mac:
    - My laptop PC works
    - My desktop PC works
    - My NetBSD box works
    - My wife's laptop PC *does not* work
    - My wife's desktop PC *does not* work
I don't know how the Mac can tell whether a machine is mine or my wife's so it knows whether or not to work...

Do you have a home network?
Personal File Sharing: You can connect Macs on a local network with Tiger’s Personal File Sharing, which allows you to mount folders from the sharing Mac on the master Mac—note that the slave Macs do the sharing; the master Mac doesn’t have to. To turn on Personal File Sharing on the slave Mac, do this:
    Open System Preferences.
In the System Preferences window, click Sharing.
In the Sharing pane, click Services.
In the Select a Service to Change Its Settings list, select the Personal File Sharing checkbox.
Now that the slave Mac has sharing turned on, you can mount it on the master Mac’s Desktop:
In the Finder, choose Go -> Network.
In the Network window, select the sharing Mac.
    Click Connect.
In the Connect to Server window, click Registered User, enter the user account name and password for the sharing Mac, and then click Connect.
In the window that appears, select the volume that contains the folder you want to sync with, and then click OK.

  • Can't access my mac from another computer

Ok, i have been able to access my G5 mac using Tiger from my G4 PB using tiger in the past.
I installed Leporad (family pack) on both machines. Now i can't access the G5 from the PB. the settings use to be correct. I kind of gave up, but i just would never get the log in or see the G5.
Today, i finally had the oppurtunity to try using the Back to My Mac feature. My G5 was on at home and i had a wireless connection at work and needed a file on my G5. so i went to the shared section in the side bar and it wasn't there to access.
When i got home i tried again. This time i could see the G5 in the side bar, but could not tell if it was through the internet or if i was seeing it through my wireless network.
when i tried to access using the back to my mac by clicking on the shared volume in the side bar, i could not access it, it finally gave me an error message saying that the server may not be available.
the weird thing is, if i choose to share screen, i could access the G5. I would get a log in window and log in no problem.
the setting in my shared preference seem to be the same for both computers.
any idea where to start on figuring this out.

Do you have a .Mac account? And are both Macs setup to use the .Mac account? Without a .Mac account, the Back-to-My-Mac feature is not going to work, as you need .Mac to act as the middle man in establishing the connection.
In addition, does your work have a corporate firewall? If it does, they most likely block the networking ports that BTMM uses.
When i got home i tried again. This time i could see the G5 in the side bar, but could not tell if it was through the internet or if i was seeing it through my wireless network.
Very likely this is local LAN via Bonjour.

Do you have your Firewall enabled? Security System Preferences
Did you enable Screen Sharing (I'm guessing you did, but I figure it is worth asking) Sharing System Preferences
NOTE: I do not have a .Mac account, and my use of Screen Sharing has been just one or 2 experiments, but I figured I could at least ask some questions that might uncover something useful.

  • Can't open Office documents from network share

    Dear,
I have a user named X that can't open Office documents from two specific shares. We call this shares T and U.
When the user X opens Office documents the error message is "...xlsx can't be opened". The problem is not client specific because when I login on the same client I can open the documents without any problem. If you copy the file to your desktop it
    opens fine.
    Any idea?

    Anybody?
We have a problem with a customer that they can't open Office documents(Word,Excel etc.) on Windows 8 image on a network share. The error message is just that they can't open the document. The documents are on a sharepoint site and we can open the documents
within the site and also we can open the Office documents on a Windows 7 image.
I think there is a group policy for Windows 8 for this but I don't know for sure?
    Anybody?

  • Printer output to Officejet 4252 All-in-one poor from networked PCs

    Hi
I thought this was an issue with one of my PCs which is running Windows 7 but it is also occuring with one running under Windows XP Pro. I have two PCs running XP Pro and the printer is attached to one of them. The Test page is perfect from the host PC but from other networked PCs the output is poor. The printout is faint and includes colour that shouldn't be there. Both XP PCs have exactly the same driver installed. I am at a loss as to what is causing this.

  • WAP610N - Can't get an IP from network

hi! i bought a Linksys WAP610N today, i placed it so i could get a signal where i can't normally.
The thing is i configured it correctly, well at least i think, i can see it on my wireless network, with a good signal, but on my Android tablet (Google Nexus 7), it can't get past the "Obtaining IP address".
I called the technical support, the person there tried to help me for about 1 hour, we tried different settings, we upgraded firmware from 1.0.01 to 1.0.04, but it didn't helped. Now he said someone will call me tomorrow during the afternoon. But then i thought i would post this problem here so maybe i could fix my problem faster.
My router isn't Linksys, it's a Netgear, i don't have wireless problem when i connect my tablets or any other wireless device on it, it's just that i bought this WAP610N to have the signal in my bedroom, where i don't get any signal normally.
If someone can help me with this before they call me, or maybe i could even find a better solution here on this community.
    Solved!

Just like what earthmyrll120288 said, this access point is designed to make your wired devices go online wirelessly thru your router. The best for your setup is the range extender which will provide internet access to hard to reach areas through the wired or wireless connections in your home. Basically, it will repeat the signal from your router to the area where you’re having problems getting a good signal.
When you said that it worked when you put on top of your desk and it gave you better coverage, it would really do that since the wireless settings of the router are already synchronized on that access point. I’m thinking that the tablet is still getting the connection from the router. If ever there are still problems especially with the signal, you might consider the RE1000.

  • Can I restore my mac from a Time Machine backup once I have used BootCamp to partition and set up Windows (without erasing all of the Windows content)?

A few months ago I partitioned my mac using BootCamp and successfully installed Windows and a few Windows-only programs (games).  I never restored my mac from the Time Machine backup and now I would really like all of my files back on my mac.  I am wondering if I insert the osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup, will that get rid of the partition I made for Windows?  Will the Windows side of my hard drive stay in tact or will everything on that side get erased when I restore the mac side from the Time Machine backup.  It was a HUUUUUUUGE pain to do the BootCamp partition and get everything Windows set up and I would really like to not have to do that all over again.  I just want to make sure that if I insert the mac osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup it will only affect the Mac partition, NOT the Windows partition.

    Hi,
Time Machine does not touch your BootCamp Windows.
It simply said ignores it completely.
Nonetheless, I am curious as to why you wanna restore a Time Machine backup.
Usually during partitioning with the BootCamp Assistant in OSX to make the Windows partition your OSX stays intact.

  • Can I wake my Mac from sleep with network activity?

Just got a MBP and now am enjoying mounting it on my iMac and vice versa via my home network (using URL address with AFP://xxx.xxx.xxx.local). Question: Is there a way to wake either one from sleep when I access it from the other?
    TIA,
    Picman

    Elamc,
OK, I now know. Some Macs will support both Ethernet and wireless and some won't. The setting in my MBP says "Wake for network access", while my iMac says "Wake for network Ethernet access". The MBP supports both, but the iMac just with a cable connection. I did find a good tech note that describes the how's and what's. Just Google "Mac wake on network access" and look at "Mac OS X v10.6: About Wake on Demand".
Thanks for your info ... it helped.

  • Leopard 10.5.7 - setting SMB server - can't browse to folders from a XP PC

i'm trying to get my mac to share the itunes folders to a XP PC.
I've setup a user for sharing only. then setup in sharing to share only the "iTunes music" folder and the in options said SMB only. I have not said user level sharing!
checked the WINS and its ok, i can see the machine on XP but.....
when i try to connect from a XP PC, i am asked to enter username/password - i say guest and "blank" and get rejected!
I've read LOADS of forums, and i'm getting nowhere. please help

    Open Sharing System prefpane.
    Check 'File Sharing' checkbox.
Click the '+' button under 'Shared Folders'.
    Select the folder to share.
Click the '+' button under 'Users'.
Select the User and set the permissions for that user.
Leave the user selected and click the 'Options' button.
Check the 'Share files and folders using SMB'.
Check the checkbox next to the username and enter the user's password when prompted.
    Click 'Done'.
On your XP box, Click 'Start' > 'Run' then type \\<ipaddressofyourmac>\nameofsharedfolder.
Enter the username and password when prompted.
Once you have successfully logged in to the Mac the path that you entered will remain in the 'Start' > 'Run' dialog unless you have your profile set to clear network histories.
If you wish to browse all the shared folders on the Mac simply use the IP address and omit the trailing backslash and name of the shared folder. A window will open and show you all the shares available for the user. You can then right-click-drag-drop any of the icons for the shares to your desktop and 'Create Shortcut Here...'. That way you only have to double-click on them and authenticate without having to browse for the shares.
You can mount the share from within 'MyComputer' by using 'Tools' > 'Map Network Drive...' and selecting the drive letter and entering \\<ipaddressofyourmac>\nameofsharedfolder into the 'Folder' field. Check the 'Reconnect at logon' checkbox if you want that to happen. Select 'Connect using a different username.' if you need use a different username on your Mac.

  • Read posts but still can't resolve my mac/pc networking issues :(

    Hi everyone,
I'll get right to it. I have a G4 10.4.7 imac which I've had hooked up to Westell Wirespeed dsl modem (allows up to 253 users when networked, Verizon provided modem and dsl service) via ethernet. Yesterday, I bought new a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4074 Notebook. 802.11 a/b/g enabled. Today, I bought a Lynksis Wireless-G broadband router in order to set up a little network.
Problem - I connected the Lynksis to the Westell modem and my imac to the to one of the four ethernet ports on the back of the Lynksis. I turned on my notebook, for the first time, did the set up wizard for the notebook. Then I did the Lynksis set up wizard for wireless connection to the internet (notebook wireless button was switched to the "on" position). I'm able to get signal on the notebook but I'm not able to completely connect (can't access the internet or web pages).
    AND
My imac won't connect at all while set up as I described above.
The Lynksis does describe specifically PC compatibility but not Mac. I didn't think that would matter as I'm connecting the imac via ethernet cable to the Lynksis.
My limited connection on the notebook also is not a secure connection. I'm limited on my PC knowledge and even though I haven't looked into this issue, I think that should be easy to make secure but I would also appreciate your input on correcting the security of the connection (just in case it's not as easy as I think). The Lynksis has a one touch "secure easy set-up" button on the front of it, but I'm obviously missing something(s) because I don't have a secure connection.
    I'd appreciate your help guy's.
    Thanks.
    Vanessa

From your description is that you've got both the Westell and the LinkSys acting as a NAT device.
Since the Westell modem allows you to have up to 253 devices on it's 'internal' network it's clear that it's using NAT (Network Address Translation) to share a single IP address from your ISP amongst those 253 devices.
Now what you've done is added a LinkSys router into the loop using one of those 253 addresses. The default setup for the LinkSys is to do the same thing - take a single IP address from an upstream device (in this case the Westell modem) and share it amongst another 253 devices using NAT. That's likely to be your problem.
You would be far better off configuring the LinkSys as a simple bridge rather than a router - that way it simply links the wireless network (including the Toshiba laptop) with the wired network (which includes the Westell, the iMac, and any other devices on the network).
In this setup the Westell will continue to use NAT and essentially control the network, and everything should work much better.
Check the LinkSys documentation for details on how to turn on its bridging mode.

  • Why can't I delete files from networked computer?

I have my iMac G5 networked to a PC. Lately, when I try to delete PC files and directories from the Mac, I keep getting the error message:
"The operation cannot be complete because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." It will not allow me to move files from the PC directories onto the Mac desktop either.
I have no problem in seeing all of the files from either computer. I can also delete Mac files while working at the PC. I have checked all connections and configurations. Is there anything special that I should check.
    Thanks
    Herschel

Are you using an Admin account to do these things? I get similar messages under those circumstances but when I use a regular account I can perform the edits (as long as I can see the content). I have no idea why this is so - but essentially you are using your OS X's server capabilities that are built into the non-server edition of OS X.

  • Problem connecting to shared folders on Mac from Windows PCs

I am having problems using windows file sharing SMB to share folders on my Mac with windows computers on the same network. I have added a folder in 'Sharing' in System Preferences, and added a user account with SMB set to 'on', but none of the windows computers in the network seem to be able to access the address that is stated.
I can access shared folders on the windows computers from my my Mac with no problems.
    Can anyone offer any advice.

I got it to work. Instead of using share\username I instead used share\short name and it connected. However, it is not very obvious from the account preferences panel how to see or modify the short name. I just read that you have to right-click the account name in the account preferences panel in order to see this. I'll give it a try soon.

My network map shows an old computer that has NOT been on the network for over 1 year....yet it still is shown as being "on" the network. That computer I listed as being an Intruder, and while it does show up in red on the map, I can NOT find out how to remove it. When I refresh the network map, it continues to show...yet I KNOW it is not there....
Can you tell me how to get rid of this non-existant computer please? When I right/click same I never get that "remove this device" option....

Hi, try doing a power cycle on your router and modem, and see if the computer disappears from the map.
