My computer is saying it can't calibrate to the  laser connection ????  Not sure what that means????

Your optical drive may need repair or replacement or it needs to be cleaned or you are using incompatible CD's

  • "failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media"

I was trying to duplicate/backup my Tiger DVD using the Disk Utility app and got this error message: "Unable to burn - the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media"
    What does that mean?
    G4 17" Powerbook 1GHz.

does it do it with all media? Have you tried different brands, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, etc.?
When I had this same problem, the fix was sending my laptop in to Apple and getting the drive replaced.

  • Error Message while trying to burn a DVD-R with my MacBook Pro: "The disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.

While using my Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 to burn a DVD-R I keep getting the error message: "This disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
So, I tried the iDVD and got the same error message.
Can anyone out there help me? I've tried both a DVD - R, and a CD.
I made a short 2:20 minute presentation from iMovie and used the "share" to iDVD, then to iTunes, then I tried exporting it to Quicktime and saved it on my desk top. That is when I tried burning by opening the blank DVD-R in the finder then draging the movie on to it and selecting the burn option. Thank you for your time in helping me with this frustrating problem.
    Peace, Pyxidis

I have had that same problem, but it was unrelated to any upgrade.
In my case the optical drive was simply failing, and I replaced it - it was a Powerbook, about eight years old.
It is possible that it's unrelated to Lion, as unlikely as this may seem, since you've just upgraded.
Optical drives seem to be the most life-limited component in these computers. The laser just seems to get weak with age.

  • How do I deal with this error message when burning DVD's: The disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.

I am getting this error message when trying to burn a DVD: The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media. iMac, Mac OS X 10.6.8 Memorex DVD-R 12x Any ideas?

First, try a different batch of recordable DVDs. If you still have problems, you may want to make an appointment at the genius bar and have it checked. The drive may be failing.

That's a hardware issue and I'd ask on the forum for whatever Mac you have.

  • I am getting an error message, that the laser can't calibrate to burn a cd.

I am getting an error message, that the laser can't calibrate to burn a cd. Is there a way to fix this?

If the computer's running Mac OS X, move the cursor to the very top of the computer's screen, click on Store, and choose Authorize this Computer.
If the computer's running Windows, press the Alt and S keys and choose Authorize this Computer, or click here, follow the instructions, click on Store in the menu bar, and choose Authorize this Computer.

  • Been trying to burn a movie onto DVD and get this "The disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media" Anybody know what it means and what to do? Help! Thanks

Been trying to burn a movie onto DVD and get this "The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media" Anybody know what it means and what to do? Help! Thanks

It generally means that the media is faulty or of poor quality. Most of us here use Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden media.
    OR
Your Superdrive may need a clean.
If you have further questions please state what Mac, with what versions of OS X, iMovie and iDVD you are using.

  • Can't burn discs. Error message: The disc can't be burned because the device failed to calibrate the laser level for this media     can't be burned because the device

Cannot burn discs. Error message: "The disc can't be burned because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media". Then the blank disc is ejected.

    Two main possible causes:
    1. Poor media. Verbatim DVD-R work best, burned at only 2x or 4x.
    2. Dirty lens. Try cleaning the superdrive with a proprietary CD/DVD lens cleaner that uses tiny brushes.

  • Burning error, can't calibrate laser?

I can't burn any CDs right now because this random, out-of-nowhere error appeared:
"The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
I can't burn anything, and I don't know why or how to fix it. I haven't done anything life-altering to my computer, so I don't know what's up.
It's not working in iTunes or on Toast, so I'm thinking the problem is not iTunes specific but that maybe somebody might know how to fix it.
I've tried several times with several different CD-Rs with different speeds, and still, nothing. These are the same CD-Rs that worked fine a week ago and now aren't burning at all.
    Help please =(

    Caroline,
Here are some ideas by looking through the help files on this site. Alot of people have had this problem it seems. If you type in the exact wording of your error message to the right under search discussions tonnes of replies come up. I highlighted a few here:
*Sounds like your drive does not like the media you were trying to use. Try a different brand, or even from a different part of the spindle, if it's bulk media.
*Messages such as the above are always due to the media and not the software. So, use better media. If you cannot burn Verbatim, THEN you have trouble.
*Thomas Hill writes in topic "Suddenly unable to burn CDs -- but no freeze or error messages" writes
After having been unable to burn CDs from iTunes, I
found the suggestion below on MacFixIT. I have jsut
finished successfully burning a CD in iTunes 7.0.2
    after following these two suggestions.
    Hope this helps.
Users have reported various issues with burning
optical media (CDs and DVDs) in some applications --
including Toast, iTunes and more -- after updating to
Mac OS X 10.4.8. The issue does not appear to be
    model-specific.
    Possible solutions
Change language setting Oddly, some users have
reported that the following process works to restore
    burn capabilities:
Pull down from the Apple Menu to "System
    Preferences."
    Click on International.
Drag and drop a foreign language to the top of the
    list.
Then, drag and drop English back to the top of the
    list.
In the lower right where it says "word break", choose
    "English (United
    States, Computer).
    Close that window.
    Restart your computer.
Reset NVRAM/PRAM For some readers, resetting NVRAM
resolves this issue. In order to reset both NVRAM and
PRAM hold down the Command, Option, P and R keys at
startup until you hear three startup chimes (this
    resets both PRAM and NVRAM).

I hope some of this helps you. I had a problem where I just couldn't burn CD's but didn't have your error. It turned out I was using CD's I had accidently burnt on before and got some brand new ones and they worked fine.

  • Iam getting the following message when i try and burn a dvd using my mac The disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.

The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
    Can anyone help
    Thanks

Unfortunately your drive has *probably* failed. You can try a cleaning disc, sometimes thst can help. First though try resetting the smc and pram.
To reset the smc on Desktop Macs
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Can't calibrate my monitor

After a reinstall, I noticed the screen looks a little different, a little flat. I went to the monitor part of System Preferences, and in trying to calibrate the colour of the display there are only 3 choices - Adobe RGB (1998), Generic RGB Profile and sRGB IEC61966-2.1
But when I try and calibrate any of these displays, I get the message "Can not calibrate the display. The factory profile for the display could not be found".
Also, when I use Safari it often asks for fonts, or in Pages, saying a font "American Typewriter" for instance, is missing.
Are these connected, and can anyone help.
    Thanks

You may want to go ahead and do an archive and install, however someone may have a better answer than mine.

  • Can I calibrate the screen of new ipad

i just got an new ipad last week but i found out that the screen is greenish.(everything looks like there is a green layer on it)
i went to the apple store and borrow my friends new ipad to make sure it is really greenish.
there is no protective film on my ipad.
    so my question is,
    1) can i calibrate the screen color?
    2) if i bring my ipad to apple store, i do they check?
ps. you can not really see the greenish if you don't compare with other new ipads. but when you compare it, it's really obvious.

You can't calibrate the screen. Yes you can have the iPad checked at an Apple Store. If there is an obvious problem with the screen, your iPad will be replaced.
Have you tried rebooting the iPad?
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • I can't calibrate any color profile for my iMac's display!

I think I accidentally deleted the color profile for my iMac's display
and now it won't let me calibrate any profile! All the colors are bright and washed out.
When I go to the display>color preference panel I get an error sound whenever I click ANY color profile, and it doesn't load. When I click "calibrate" it gives me the message: "Can not calibrate the display. The factory profile for the display could not be found."
But I wasn't even using the factory profile, and it won't let me choose any other ones, either (though a whole list does show up!)
I tried repairing/verifying the profiles in the ColorSync Utility, but it didn't help.
Is there somewhere I can download the profile and install it? I'm running a white 20" Core Duo 2GHz iMac (summer of 2006), if that helps.
    Thanks!

    seenew,
I'm wondering if you would have any luck with resetting the PRAM? PRAM settings hold some of the display preferences I believe.
See: "Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM"
If not, I am wondering if reapplying the Combo update for 10.4.7 might correct the display calibration issue or at least return it to the default?
I don't think that recreating the .plist file for displays will help.
As far as I know you cannot "download" the profile.
sorry if those suggestions don't help,
