Can't Burn CD. Get "checking media" hangup

When I try to burn a playlist, after inserting a blank disk, I get the flashing message "Checking media". Seems to be an infinite loop. Doesn't matter what the playlist is.
I can burn the playlist if I drag it to Toast.
What does "Checking media" mean? What is it doing?
I don't have a .mac account. Might that have something to do with it.
PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Mac Mini (Intel)

Not sure if anybody has found the solution to the problem "officially", however this is what I did to fix the checking media hangup problem.
With more than a decade of Windows IT Engineering experience under my belt, I had to do something very "non" Mac like to fix the problem. Put my Windoze hat back on and went to work and did the following:
I drug the Itunes from the dock into the trash (pretty much what I do with anything I don't like that is frustrating me).
Redownload iCHunes 7.3.2(6) again to your desktop. Mount and install it and VIOLA. You can burn CDs again.
As for playlists.. well, very Microsoft-like. You're screwed. Not sure why some playlists survived and some did not. I don't have that many so rebuilding the broken ones aren't a big deal.
Hope that helps! :>

  • Can not burn back up - checking media message

I am trying to back up my large collection of songs but a message 'checking media' appears and basically does not accept disc and ejects it after analising/reading for a few minutes.
If I place the DVD-R first then request the back up it works but only the first DVD. When it requests the second DVD (I require many DVD's to save the large library)it does the 'checking media' process basically jamming the system.
Is there a way I can cancel the 'checking media'? I've looked at preferences and can not see any way to do so.
It is a big problem as I can not back my library. I suppose I can not back up the library to a pen instead?
The DVD's are archive quality and I have thje latest updates.
    Many thanks for any help.

Nowadays people don't back up to CD/DVD. They get an *external hard drive* and copy over their entire iTunes folder, and whatever else they are backing up.
The advantages are (1) this method does not depend on iTunes's horribly unreliable burning capability (2) you can look at the external and see that the stuff you backed up is really there. (If you want to see an unhappy person, it is when they try to restore from CD/DVD and discover that it did not burn correctly in the first place.) (3) it lets you back up your other valuable files besides your music.

  • What can I use to get shared media across OSes on my local network?

    Hey guys,
My family is getting a new home entertainment center and I've thrown together a PC from spare parts around the house to put behind it and I'd like to know if there's a program out there that would allow me to gather shared media across the local network (everyone else in my family uses Windows...mainly Vista   :-/ ).  If not, is there any other way I can access the shared media (short of putting Windows on the PC of course)?  I tried searching, but I couldn't seem to come up with anything.
    Thanks in advance!

Alright, so I've been working with Samba today, and I believe I have it working properly.  However, I can't seem to access any shared files/folders on machines that have Vista on them.
When I run smbtree, I get this output:
    \\HOMEMEDIA
    \\WINXPCOMP
    \\VISTACOMP1
    timeout connecting to 192.168.1.107:445
    timeout connecting to 192.168.1.107:139
    cli_start_connection: failed to connect to VISTACOMP1<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

    cli_start_connection: failed to connect to VISTACOMP2<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
    \\WIN7PC
I'm not really sure what to do here.  I've tried changing around settings in the smb.conf file, but I'm not really sure what exactly it is that I'm doing for every option.  Also, smbtree sometimes won't output a tree at all and it will just hang.  I'm quite confused, any suggestions on what I should try?
Also, one of my Windows 7 PCs won't show up on smbtree.  I can ping it though...maybe it's not on the right workgroup?
EDIT:  I was able to fix the problem with my second Windows 7 computer, apparently I had to change from 128-bit encryption to 40/56 bit encryption, then smbtree was able to pick up on it.

  • When I want to burn CD, it checks media then stops

I purchased some music and want to burn to CD.  After clicking on "Burn" button, it opens the CD drive and asks for a blank CD.  It then cheks media and stops with no further action.  Have I missed something?  I have always been able to burn CD's before without trouble.  As far as I know, nothing has changed.

Sounds like the CD drive died. Luckily they cost next to nothing to replace. Or get an external LaCie instead. I have a dual G4 1.25 and the CD drive was always so anemic I use a LaCie Porsche with it.

  • I can't burn music, or get pass checking media

Sadly I've tried everything I know to get iTunes to burn a CD. I get the
playlist all set up, adjust the preferences, click on burn, then it opens
the CD tray, I put a blank CD-R in, then iTunes says it’s ‘Checking Media’
which it does for a few seconds, then it just stops - no error message or
anything. The little window that says ‘checking media’ just goes back to the
apple symbol and nothing happens. Any others ideas as to what i should do.
I'm just hoping that i'm not the only one with this issue. Thanks

What are you trying to achieve?  Are you trying to burn to disk via the iPhoto Share ➙ Burn menu? That produces a mini library on the disk that can be used only by a Mac running iPhoto.
If you want to burn just some image files to a data CD/DVD disk then follow Larry's recommended workflow.
What disk type and manufacturer are your using? What system and iPhoto version are you running?  Have you run the OS X Mountain Lion: Use Apple Hardware Test? When did the burning proiblem begin?  If you can't burn a disk from the Finder then it's a hardware or system problem and not an iPhoto one.

Having issues when try to burn a disc., which I never had an issue doing. Yesterday when I tried to burn a playlist it says "checking media" but just sits there. I know drive is working  because I can put in a purchased cd and can import it into my library, but now it just sits there and hums until I maually eject the disc. Before all this started it said something about that I should "calibrate disc", since then it won't let me do any burning. I can't find any options in " preferences to change anything except the burn speed. Any suggestions? Tried rebooting, tried using my wifes iTunes on same comptuer.

Could you post your diagnostics for us please?

  • Superdrive does not burn Cd-"checking media"

In the past couple of weeks, I would burn a CD with iTunes 7.0.1 and then any other blank CD I insert would just keep spinning and iTunes would report "checking media". Sometimes the blank CD would be rejected. Each day I can burn a CD and then after that I can't burn a CD until I restart.
I have been able to burn DVD's without any problems.
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

This is what I have so far. When I am able to burn
an audio CD with iTunes, the CD text does not show
    up, just Track #s.
That is normal. iTunes does not handle CD Text.
Otherwise, I get the message of
"Checking media" and the drive keeps spinning.
Have you tried different media, such as Verbatim.
I quit iTunes and used Toast to burn a data file. That
was okay. But when I tried to burn 2 songs from the
iTunes library with Toast, the burn went okay, but
    the song titles were incorrect.
Also normal. Song titles are not stored on audio CDs. iTunes get the song titles from an online database of CDs. The CD is identified by the lengths of all the songs on the disc. If you burn only part of a CD, it will not find the correct song titles.
    I also used Disk
Utilities to burn a data file and that went okay.
Data disk are burned with a directory of file names, so do not have the song name problems of audio CDs.
    Should iTunes be re-loaded?
No. I think your only problem is bad media.

  • I can't burn a disc from Itunes without getting error 4280 repeatedly.

I can't burn a disc from Itunes without getting error 4280 repeatedly. I was just able to burn a CD and now can't burn another. Any thoughts? I know my CD burner works as I just made a disc. I have tried changing file type from Audio to MP3 with no luck. Thanks for trying to help me.

    Hello Sonni,
It sounds like you are unable to burn a disc with iTunes due to this error code. I would first use the following article to check issues with the type of disc drive:

  • Why do I get an error message that says can't burn dvds or watch videos because of errors in register?  This occured after installing upgrade to 10.4

Since updating itunes with 10.4 I get an error msg stating I can't burn CDs or put videos into itunes.  I tried repair option twice, uninstalled and reinstalled itunes, same problem.  I do not have any CD/DVD burning software installed.

I recently had to reinstall my software for a
dell computer a dell latitude d 830, then after installing all of my software and such including itunes the player did well even record to disks with no problems now that my system has done alot of updating of system files....now the itunes does not burn to my cd...error message 2131 this time
The 2131 usually indicates firmware needs to be updated on a drive.
Head to your drivers and downloads page for your latitude at Dell, and check for updates to your firmware for your optical drives. If you're behind and you update, does that clear up the 2131?

  • I keep getting error 4310 and can't burn any cd's

I have no idea why all of a sudden I can't burn any cd's.  I continue to get an "error 4310" as it cancels the burn.
It seems this started after upgrading to Windows 8.1 but I am not sure because now I also tried my Windows Media
Player and that won't work either...something about codecs.  I am illiterate when it comes to fixing computers but if
there's a simple fix can someone please help.
