Can't burn CD's? Error 4261?

Hi,
Whenever I try to burn some songs onto a CD using iTunes I get Error 4261 and I can't burn it. Does anyone know what could be wrong? Anyway to fix it?
Thanks.

Hi Asdfzxcv,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
You might want to look at Knowledge Base Document #61102 on You're unable to burn a CD in iTunes.
What CD burner do you have? Did it come with your machine?

  • Cannot burn audio CD - Error 4261

Please help. I downloaded the new version of iTunes & now I can't burn CDs. I had no problem before.
When I try to burn I get the error "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred. (4261)."
How do I tell what this error means?

According to Toonz, 4261 is "Track following error"
Top fixes for any burn issue in iTUnes is...
    1) Goto the PC makers site and manually look for updates for your PC, especailly BIOs and chipset/IDE controller updates and firmware updates for the CD ROM (If it came with your PC when you bought it)
    2) Slow the burn speed from "Max" to something like 12x 8x or 4x. you do this by going to edit>preferences>advanced tab>burn sub tab
    3) Try a different brand or type of Blank CD
You can also goto Help>run CD diagnostic and copy/paste the whole report here (So we can help you) and on apples site here (So they recieve feedback about the issue and help them build a better CD burn engine in future versions of iTunes) http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/windows/cddiagnostics/

    Hi icsailor,
This sounds like a known issue reported here:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=713014
There was a workaround posted, but I've not tested it myself. Here are the steps.
    # Go into Yahoo Messenger Options - Change the Window in the dropdown to Tab and press OK.
    # Then go back and switch it to small window and press OK.
Once the bug is officially resolved, you could try running a Nightly or Aurora build to use the fix early.
    Hopefully this helps!

Cannot burn discs. Error message: "The disc can't be burned because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media". Then the blank disc is ejected.

    Two main possible causes:
    1. Poor media. Verbatim DVD-R work best, burned at only 2x or 4x.
    2. Dirty lens. Try cleaning the superdrive with a proprietary CD/DVD lens cleaner that uses tiny brushes.

  • Idvd can't burn .mov with error message

    Hi guys,
I just finished a 57 min. project with Final Cut Express4 containing 8 sequences. I export them separately.  I burned them with idvd : File>Export>Quick Time Movie (self contained uncheck), I include Audio & Video as usual and save them in the Movie Folder as .mov; everything goes fine and I can watch them both in computers and TVs. But when I export the entire project with chapter markers (exactly the same way I did for the above), the result is different, and the idvd refuse to burn it, an error message says ”unsupported file type: broken reference movie”.   Those exported in separate sequences are shown as .mov with a picture icon in my Movie Folder while the other 2 exported with chapter markers are also shown with .mov but with a QuickTime Movie icon.  Although these with Quick Time Movie icon are not accepted by the idvd, I still can burn them through the dvdproj file, but the product can be played with computers only.
I know I must have done something wrong but I don’t know what it’s.  Some one is kind enough to help please.
    Thank you.

    Hi Al
All the Chapters Markers are more than 2 seconds apart and are more than 2 seconds from start points; all sequences are well butted without any gap in between.  However there are markers marked a few frames after the sequences started, which means the previous sequence ended a few frames before the Chapter Markers.  If this is overlap, what should I do from here?  Please walk me through.  Thank you again.  puisum
    Hi MartinR
I am sure you read my response to Alchroma. You both having valuable points.  Now, this is a very good question “if I nest the sequences”. To be honest with you, I am not 100% sure what I did (because this project have been sitting in my computer for 9 months) I but I think I start the entire project with only one sequence at the beginning and I use copy & paste to make the 8 sequences after I put in the chapter makers.  At this point, I have found some problems on the Chapter Markers and I am sure Alchroma doesn’t mind to walk me through then I will take it from there.  Please don’t give up on me yet.  Thank you in anticipation.  puisum

  • Burned CD yesterday, can not burn today.  Error 4280 - Windows Vista

Yesterday, I bought a number of tracks and albums from the iTunes store. Before I purchased them, I created a test CD with some tracks I already ripped from CDs I own. I burned this CD through iTunes. All seemed well.
I bought my music. After, I also backed up my purchases using iTunes. Still, all seemed well.
Today, I tried to create audio CD with the tracks I purchased from the iTunes store. It did not work.
It seems that the error (4280) comes up a lot, but in relation to Sony drives. My drive is not made by Sony.
Anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?

  • Can`t burn cds. Error 0x80020060

This is the error I get " 0x80020060 The device drained its buffer without burn underrun protection". What can I do here? I`m running Panther 0sx 10.3.9 on an emac.

Try burning the CD at a slower speed; this will decrease the rate at which the burner expects data, and makes a buffer underrun less likely to happen. This happens because a CD burner needs a continuous stream of data to burn the CD; if it has more data than it needs at a specific moment in time, the extra data is stored in the buffer.

  • New iMac (Dec 2008) can't burn CD's - Error!

I bought a new iMac from the Apple Store in December and just 3 days ago I tried burning a CD out of iTunes. First try - Error. Second try - CD burned but when playing it on any CD player after some seconds I get an Error message.
Looking through different forums in Germany hundreds of people seem to have this problem. Some posts are as old as the latest iMac model.
Can Apple not solve the problem????

There may be some similar issues noted among the computer series
you have, in this: Intel®-based iMac Support Discussion section:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=189
    {As this "iMac (flat panel) Discussion" relates to the iMac G4s, only.}
If your computer is eligible for the extended AppleCare plan to add
an additional two years hardware coverage and support, I suggest
you buy that; and then you also increase the ability to contact them
directly to resolve this and/or other issues should they arrive.
Sometimes, a brand and quality of blank DVD or CD recordable
media won't work well in some computer optical drives; so that
is a variable to look into. If there is a chance of a hardware issue
that is something to check with AppleCare directly; since these
forums are only discussions between computer owners and those
who are using different versions of hardware & software.
    Since I have three iMac G4 17" 1.25GHz USB 2.0 computers and
also an iBook G4 12" 1.33GHz, plus an older PM7600 computer,
the vintage of the hardware isn't so much a problem as is using
the correct path to troubleshooting and discovering what the
cause of an issue really is. To deduce the symptom and determine
if it is hardware or software; then check further, accordingly...
If you have access to an Apple Store and Genius Bar, you could
see if they can help you troubleshoot the issue. And it is advised
to make a backup of your computer's contents; your work files, etc
and this could be a full clone of the complete hard disk drive, or
whatever you can archive. An externally enclosed HDD is best
and one that can be used to boot the computer from a full cloned
OS X version is ideal; then you can have more options at home
or at work to backups for most possible occasions.
There may be some relatively simple things to try and do with a
new computer; not knowing your level of expertise or interests
in preventative maintenance on the OS X, or any basic trouble-
shooting or system repairs; I am wondering what (if any) I could
suggest. There are more than a few things most users could try
and do; some may help an OS X system work better.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

Firstly, please don't make multiple posts on the same problem. Once is enough.
Secondly, I strongly suspect that your Nero installation is the cause of the problem. Did you allow it to install the Packet Writing utility? If so, please see the FAQ for details on how to avoid this issue in future.

Sounds like the CD drive died. Luckily they cost next to nothing to replace. Or get an external LaCie instead. I have a dual G4 1.25 and the CD drive was always so anemic I use a LaCie Porsche with it.
