Can't Burn DVD - Falsely Reports Insufficient Space

I am trying to backup my data to a 4.7GB DVD. My backup data is about 1.5GB total; however when I try to burn the DVD I get an error message complaining of insufficient space on my disk. For some reason, when I click on the icon of my burn disk image it reports "minimum 6.7 GB", but when I do Get Info on the contents they are only 1.5GB. Surely I don't need 6.7GB to backup 1.5GB... I've tried emptying trash. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks in advance.

The same thing is happening to me. I've got a folder that is 4.44 GB and am trying to burn it to a 4.7 GB DVD-R. I've followed the directions to burn from the Finder. I have 16 GB free on my machine. All the files are in one folder on this machine.
How much leeway do we need? I can keep removing files to find what will work but is there a way to calculate this beforehand?
Is it because I am using an Office Depot DVD-R? I will try some other brands eventually. I have been able to use this brand burning a movie to DVD using iDVD.
Thanks for any help.
Cheers,
John L
PS After the OS told me it was too big I ejected the real disk but its icon was left on the desktop. That ain't right.
The saga continued... It then turned the disk icon into a burn folder (folder with a burn logo on it) but when I tried to burn that from the Finder menu, it told me to insert a blank DVD with at least 4.4 GB free. There was already one in there with 4.7 GB free. All I could do is cancel. I give up. (10.4 has been VERY odd for me.)
I'll be away for the holidays for forgive me if I can't respond right away. Thanks.

  • I can't burn DVD's on DVD Studio Pro since I install Snow Leopard

Well, my computer was working great, I had tiger installed and I decided to update to snow leopard and "big mistake" since then I haven't been able to burn DVD's from DVD Studio Pro, at the time to start writing the information to burn it, it shows a message saying " the recording device reported the error #6. Unknown device error. I connected and external dvd burner and when is time to burn it says "The recording device reported the illegal request. Unknown device.
I can easily burn DVD's from iDVD what makes me believe the problem is not with the burner. I went to Melrose Mac and they told me there is a conflict between FCS and Snow Leopard, they suggested to install Leopard instead, he mention many people has complain about the same issue Can that be possible? I got something thinking my computer was going to work better and I screwed it up!

Did you also upgrade DVD Studio Pro?

  • 180 GB of my 639-GB Macintosh hard drive is used. 320 GB of my 498-GB Tie Capsule is used. Only one backup ("now") exists for the Time Capsule, which can no longer backup because of "insufficient space". How come? What is wrong?"

Thank you William for your most helpful response. I shall deal first with your three comments:
Not being tech savvy, I would not have been able to make that call myself but it sure makes sense.
I have updated my profiles as you suggest.  Excellent tip.
This guidance is good.  Being new to Apple Support Communities, I did not find the field a labeling and guidance to be clear, a point you make.  Now I know, I shall do as you say and will use the small slim box as a header to the full message/question, which will place in the larger box below.
Secondly, I come to your question: Did anything change on your Mac recently, such as replacing the disk or main logic board?
The answer is “yes”.  Two events have happened both of which concerned the Time Capsule:
The telephone company, with which I have access to the Internet and I have my email account, installed a new modum.  After the technician left I had to try and get the Time Capsule and WiFi working again which ended with my having to call Apple for technical assistance.  The Apple technician walked me through a number of procedural steps which effectively re-set up the Time Capsule.
Access to the Internet failed and the telephone company reset the modum.  I had to call Apple again.  This time the technician did not reset the Time Capsule but walked me through a number of steps tha included renaming the “site”  (not the Time Capsule).
Another piece of information that may be relevant is that the MacBook Pro uses the Time Capsule for backup.  Everything appears to be in order.  When I enter the Time Capsule for this laptop I have backups going back for a long time.
Also, I do a weekly backup of the two computers onto another external hard drive using the Time Machine software.  So I have another backup of both computers.

  • STILL can't burn DVDs on Mac OS 10.6.5 after trying everything

    Hi there.
Ever since I've updated to 10.6.5, I can't burn DVDs, doesn't matter which brand or what software I use. however, I am able to burn CDs. I went to my local Apple Store and they booted OS 10.6.3 on my computer via firewire and what d'you know ? it burnt a dvd right away. this is clearly an issue with the latest update. I did as they said, reseted my PRAM and even re-installed the latest update (I downloaded the 10.6.5 combo version from Apple Support).
Is anyone experiencing the same ? I know a lot of people had the same issue couple of weeks ago. did anyone successfully overcome it ?
    cheers.

This is an older post from the Roxio Community (http://forums.support.roxio.com/topic/39824-toast-burns-cd-but-not-dvd-on-mac/); but seems like similar problem - maybe worth a try:
Either something is preventing the data from being sent to the drive's DVD-writing laser or the drive's laser is failing to start writing the disc. The only thing you can do with Toast is trash the plist and prefs files in the User>Library>Preferences folder and relaunch Toast. You might get a laser-cleaning disc for your drive. (A different laser is used to write CDs than is used to write DVDs). Also try choosing Save as Disc Image with Toast and burn the resulting disc image using the Image File setting in the Toast Copy window.
Note that the laser cleaning idea was also mentioned in the previous link provided. Have you tied that? - would be nice if a simple solution worked.

  • Can iTunes burn DVDs into our idevices?

Since burn CDs is a piece of cake but can iTunes burn DVDs into our idevices.

I haven't tried to convert DVDs to iPod yet (had it for a week) but in the past I tried to convert DVDs to my PocketPC handheld using many tools and found that there is no quick, easy and trouble-free way to do it. The fact that Apple chose to use specific (proprietary) video codecs does not help. You have to get your hands dirty, learn a lot about video, codecs, bitrates and so on. It was more time and energy than I was willing to spend. I may give it another try though. I bought the Apple AV cable to view video on TV and it'd be a shame to not use it.
You may find some tutorials and other conversion tools at this website: www.dvdrhelp.com, they also have discussion forums. (hope it's ok to post this link)

  • Can't burn DVD

    Dear,
I can't burn DVD +R with my macbook pro. Bought verbatim, sony, fujifilm dvd's nothing works.
An error shows up in toast something like this:
Sense Key = Medium Error sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
    Kind regards,

I don't burn dvd's very often, so the challenge is to remember when I do.
Just remember that a disk image is like a "virtual disc", so you want to make Copy using the Image File.

  • I can not burn dvds anylonger with my MacPro. Why ?

Hi everyone. I already posted this message in another thread but got no useful replies.
Configuration: MacPro Early 2008, MacOSX 10.6.8
I can not burn dvds anymore and do not know why. I can play dvds and cds though!
The following is the usual error message displaying after clicking the button burn :
I have run Disk Utility from the Install cd of Snow Leopard and the small things which needed repairs have been repaired.
I have reset the PRAM and the SMC (System Management Controller). Nothing.
I have set up a new user account with admin privileges but it did not work.
Please, note that I am trying to burn the same Kodak Pro dvds for photo and data archival that I burned in the past in the same MacPro.
I am actually burning my dvds using my MacBook Pro connected with my MacPro through Airport but it's a very slow process, of course.
    Any piece of advice ?
    Thank you !

FC/e is based upon the Quicktime-engine; so, on 'Export using QT', you'll get all codecs & settings.
    but which one..
due to sheer popularity, YouTube became a 'standard' - I'm happy with the convenience, YT and the 'embed'-code offers - excellent quality, automatic adjusted to the watchers connection&hardware.
    my export settings are 720p, h264, 6MBit/sec - gives a - imho! - superb quality.
(example of a 'screen-test' from my latest project CLICK )
for creating so-called 'flash video'/.flv, you need 3rd party apps.
Sorenson Squeeze is more of an pro-tool, .. you need some background knowledge to get noticeable 'better' quality.
.. and the question is: are you willing to pay $.$$$ for that 0.x% more quality .. ? does your source offers such a 101% quality, which needs such affords?
if bandwidth is an issue, because you're hosting on your own servers, consider the free codec xh264, you can install as a free QT-plug-in.. with low or super-low bitrates, it offers a superior quality compared to h264 ...

  • Can't burn DVD, reinstall pkg?

    Dear Friends,
I have read several other posts with the same problem (can't burn DVD's). I could previously. There were no real solutions just the usual diagnostic suggestions. How about reinstalling whatever package burns DVD'? I have Pacifist. What package would that be? Thanks for your help.

    Dear Baltwo
Thanks for your reply. I have tried all the usual "voodoo" fixes. The ones you try when you haven't a clue about what might be wrong(disk utility, disk warrior, etc.)
I tried various versions of Toast, I've tried the built-in burning utilies. This same set-up burned DVD's fine before. I can read them, I can burn CDs, but not burn DVDs. I have been to the apple forums and found similar posts. I am guessing that whatever burns them has been corrupted. Is possible to reinstall just that part with Pacifist? I using OS X4.10 so my original install disk is old(4.3)I'd like to avoid reinstalling that whole old system. Thanks for your help.

  • Can't burn DVD's with Tiger

Since I installed Tiger, I can't burn DVD's using either Toast 6.1 or the native Apple burning software. I keep getting "Mismatch at byte...sector9. Verification failed." I am trying to back up a variety of files. I can burn CD's on my iBook G4, but I can't burn any DVD with any kind of content on my Pioneer. I tried PatchBurn with no success. Any suggestions? TIA. --- Dave

My guess is your Pioneer drive is connected via Firewire or USB 2. The OS 10.4 install or updates may have caused some problem with the Firewire or USB 2 communication with the drive. Oftentimes these problems are fixed by applying Apple's Combined System Updater. In your case that is the 10.4.4 combined update. It doesn't matter if you are already running 10.4.4.
Otherwise you may need to do an archive and reinstall of 10.4 to get the link working properly.

  • Can't burn DVD but image plays just fine in Apple DVD player

I can make a DVD and save it as an image, which DVD player will play flawlessly. I just can't burn it to a DVD. It fails continuously. Maybe it's my media? Can anyone recommend media known to work well in a MacBook Pro (last version)? Any other suggestions? thanks.

It is easy to burn from a disk image, and it is better because all the media needed is already within the disk image file. It doesn't have to search, locate and pull in the media for the burn. There are many places for errors to occur. If you have successfully created a disk image file, just burn from that.
Also, a disk image file is self-contained. You can safely delete both the original iDVD project and the original iMovie used to make it if you are finished editing them. Because the disk image file is small, you will save drive space. You can also burn a new DVD disk of that project any time in the future, without having to remember if you moved the original media, or renamed anything used in that project. Of course, you cannot edit a disk image, but you can't edit a burned DVD disk either.
Many users here report that DVD-R disks are better and play in more types of set-top players. Others think DVD+R disks work fine. I always use Verbatim DVD-R, burn at 4x or less, create a disk image file of all my iDVD projects and I have never had a burn issue.
