Can't burn dvd says sense key=medium error

I cant burn dvds. Ive tried several times with diffrent kinds of discs.  I have never had a problem before but all of a sudden it says SENSE KEY=MEDIUM ERROR.

Just curious...did you ever find a solution for this problem? I am having the EXACT same issue - it just started one day when I was backing data files up, and now I have not been able to burn a single DVD. CD-R's are okay, but no luck with DVD-R's. I have also tried different brands. I think there is some incompatibility problem with the the Mac OS or Roxio's software that is botching communication...

  • 2008 Mac Pro burner failure - report "Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR - Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03"

Problem just arose - burners working days ago - NO major changes in Mac Pro --- Attempting to burn some DVDs (data only), using the latest version of Toast v12.0 & Dragon Burn, as soon as I tell either my internal or external unit to burn, it runs a few minutes then pops up dialog box - "Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR - Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03". Blanks are new Memorex. I've restarted Mac Pro multiple times, still no burning possible. In dire need to restore capability. Most gracious thanks for ANY immediate assistance.

There are several different incompatible media sold as writeable CDs. You MUST match the media to the abilities of your drive.
I was flummoxed by buying 8x media when my drive was a 2x drive. I needed the other type, and there was nothing helpful in the diagnostics or the packaging that helped me understand that.
EDIT: There is an interesting helpful feature buried in System Profiler ... (read the last two lines of the report):

Go to the hard drive find the following folders and look for the following file, com.apple.finder.Plist, delete it and restart the computer. Its found under the following folder Users-account name-library-prefrences. This helped resolve my issue for now.

Try another blank DVD or another brand of DVD.

eMac optical drive: reads fine but has ceased writing.  One day it's working fine, burning DVDs, then after repeated attempts stops copying and gives the following error message:  "Sense key=MEDIUM ERROR, Sense Code=0x0C, WRITE ERROR".  Drive is Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-127D.  Is this a software issue or is the drive half dead?  Get the same result with either Popcorn or Toast 10.

Are you using Roxio Toast? That error seems to be discussed a lot in the Roxio forums. Scroll down this thread:

  • What does this mean? drive reported error: sense key = medium error, etc,

I have no idea what the error means. However, need a little more info from you.
What type of CD are you using, audio or data? -R, -RW?

I am trying to create a photo disk using toast to burn to a dvd.  It is giving errors and a message that it failed to create.  I am burning to a DVD+R.   What can I do to resolve this, or what does it mean?

Then you may have a mechanical problem with your SuperDrive. As I see it, you have only one option: take the unit to your local Apple Store/AASP and get them to diagnose the problem and get an estimate for repair. If the estimate seems to high (and you're out of warranty) you can get a new internal SuperDrive from OWC and install it yourself.
The diagnosis and estimate should be free.
    Good luck,

  • Can't burn dvd's!!!  error result code -8796 is freaking me out.

i've been trying to burn a Quicktime .mov file to dvd-r. i have a mac 10.5.8. I was able to do this before I got the internet with idvd3 or toast 7, now that I have the internet neither toast nor idvd work. After the project is done encoding, I keep receiving the message "cannnot record disc because of mac os error result code -8796". anyone have a similar problem or a guess as to what might be going on? thanks.

Hi, depends on wheter it was really -8796 or -8976, easy to transpose, but the 1st is a Font error, the second which makes much more sense is a Quicktime error, & my guess on that would be some Disk or Cache corruption.
are you saying I should open Font Book, validate the fonts and look for duplicates? I've never messed with the fonts, never (knowingly) installed any 3rd party fonts..
It won't hurt anything to do it, & some apps like MS & Adobe apps will install some fonts that may not be great for Macs.
i'm a newbie and don't really understand why fonts would affect dvd burning but i'm willing to try anything (within reason) cheers...
Hey, don't worry about that, I'm not a n00b & I couldn't understand it either... though I do have a knack for being able to conceive the impossible as probable, & sorta warp my brain into a feasible scenario... LOL on me!
I really think OCG fell upon, (well OK, used logic), to come up with perhaps the real source of the problem & maybe the real error code!?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Delete old Log files.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.
Feel free to holler if that presents any questions.

  • Can't burn DVD

    Dear,
I can't burn DVD +R with my macbook pro. Bought verbatim, sony, fujifilm dvd's nothing works.
An error shows up in toast something like this:
Sense Key = Medium Error sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
    Kind regards,

I don't burn dvd's very often, so the challenge is to remember when I do.
Just remember that a disk image is like a "virtual disc", so you want to make Copy using the Image File.

  • Can't Burn DVD's

    Hi!
I've just started having problems burning DVD's on my G4.
I'm using the same media I always use, and have just started getting this error message:
    "The Drive Reported an Error"
    Sense Key=MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense Code= 0x73 0x03
I have a few applications that I can burn DVD's in (disk utility, Toast, Popcorn).
The error first appeared in Toast, but i was still able to use the other programs to burn DVD's in. Now the error have spread to the other applications as well . Weird huh ?
I need my DVD burner to work !
    Please help!!
    Thanks
    Karen

Does it read Commercial DVD Movies.
What Brand and Format DVD's are you using?
Remember that larger spools of DVD's in some Brands tend to be much poorer quality. Some are so poor that many have shown as much as 8 out of 10 to be a problem.
Even though many of the Optical Drives that are in our machines are suppose to burn RW and + media, it is also a good idea to remember that DVD-R Media is the most widely used and recognised across the board. As well as the best results are recieved when using the absolute best media.

  • I have a MacBook Pro, Matshita UJ-857E while recording music my drive reported an error: Sense Key=HARDWARE ERROR Sense Code=0x03,0x01 I have no idea what this means, and now my cd burner/player won't work. can someone help me fix this problem?

Please Help me. I am having problems with my MATSHITA UJ-857E DVD-R burner/writer. I burned 4 cd's and then it stopped working.
I can select my songs, and then it asks for a blank disc. It starts preparing to write the disc, then it says,"
The drive reported an error: Sense Key= HARDWARE ERROR Sense Code= 0x09,0x01 TRACKING SERVO FAILURE.
Can anyone give me some advice on how to fix it or what this means because I have no idea what it is talking about or how to begin to fix the problem?

This is an error reported by the optical drive's firmware. The tracking servo is the servomechanism which guides the laser pickup along the track on the optical disc. The error means that the servo couldn't do its job within the programmed parameters. What it doesn't say is why.
You have to be very precise as to when this error occurs. If it occurs as you wrote, while it "starts preparing to write the disc", and not when it has actually began to burn, then it's likely that the drive has gone bad and needs to be replaced.
There are other possibilities, so you should check them, but they would be more likely if the error occurred after the drive began to write. OrangeMarlin has suggested two options -- try a different brand of CD or DVD, and try cleaning the lens.

  • DVD Burn fail, Sense Key = Hardware Error, Sense Code = 0x09, 0x01, TRACKING SERVO FAILURE, What could be the solution?

DVD Burn fail, Sense Key = Hardware Error, Sense Code = 0x09, 0x01, TRACKING SERVO FAILURE, What could be the solution?

There is only one option and that is to replace the drive. It is not expensive to perform the replacement yourself if you so choose.

  • Can't Burn DVD-R

When attempting to burn HP 8x DVD-R (several) with Toast Titanium 7.1.3 on my MacBook Pro (Matshita DVD-R UJ-857E, Firmware Revision AZ0E) I receive the following error messages:
    SENSE KEY=HARDWARE ERROR
    SENSE CODE=0x03, 0x02
    <click on "okay">
    The following message then appears:
    SENSE KEY=ILLEGAL REQUEST
    SENSE CODE=0X30, 0X05
    CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM-INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
    <click on "okay">
Subsequently the attempt to burn the DVD terminates.
Note that the Matshita DVD drive will read/write CDs and will read the same HP DVDs burned elsewhere.
I can also burn these DVDs on an external NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG also using Toast Titanium 7.1.3.
Question: How can I get the Matshita device to burn a DVD-R?

I would say it is the media. Cheap media won't be consistent.
I use nothing but Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs myself.
    Verbatim is another good media.

  • I can't burn DVD's on DVD Studio Pro since I install Snow Leopard

Well, my computer was working great, I had tiger installed and I decided to update to snow leopard and "big mistake" since then I haven't been able to burn DVD's from DVD Studio Pro, at the time to start writing the information to burn it, it shows a message saying " the recording device reported the error #6. Unknown device error. I connected and external dvd burner and when is time to burn it says "The recording device reported the illegal request. Unknown device.
I can easily burn DVD's from iDVD what makes me believe the problem is not with the burner. I went to Melrose Mac and they told me there is a conflict between FCS and Snow Leopard, they suggested to install Leopard instead, he mention many people has complain about the same issue Can that be possible? I got something thinking my computer was going to work better and I screwed it up!

Did you also upgrade DVD Studio Pro?

  • STILL can't burn DVDs on Mac OS 10.6.5 after trying everything

    Hi there.
Ever since I've updated to 10.6.5, I can't burn DVDs, doesn't matter which brand or what software I use. however, I am able to burn CDs. I went to my local Apple Store and they booted OS 10.6.3 on my computer via firewire and what d'you know ? it burnt a dvd right away. this is clearly an issue with the latest update. I did as they said, reseted my PRAM and even re-installed the latest update (I downloaded the 10.6.5 combo version from Apple Support).
Is anyone experiencing the same ? I know a lot of people had the same issue couple of weeks ago. did anyone successfully overcome it ?
    cheers.

This is an older post from the Roxio Community (http://forums.support.roxio.com/topic/39824-toast-burns-cd-but-not-dvd-on-mac/); but seems like similar problem - maybe worth a try:
Either something is preventing the data from being sent to the drive's DVD-writing laser or the drive's laser is failing to start writing the disc. The only thing you can do with Toast is trash the plist and prefs files in the User>Library>Preferences folder and relaunch Toast. You might get a laser-cleaning disc for your drive. (A different laser is used to write CDs than is used to write DVDs). Also try choosing Save as Disc Image with Toast and burn the resulting disc image using the Image File setting in the Toast Copy window.
Note that the laser cleaning idea was also mentioned in the previous link provided. Have you tied that? - would be nice if a simple solution worked.
