Can't burn optical disks

is there a problem in 10.5 with burning optical disks from Disk Utility? I just wasted 4 disks and this never happened before. The burned disks are unmountable, they just keep trying to be read.

Why is this marked solved? I didn't see a solution.
It was certainly answered by the OP

When a thread is hijacked (which is rude) only the OP can mark the thread solved. Those with a similar problem should not break in with their own problem, but post a new thread. This is the way forums work - it is not my rule.
Not all problems have the same solution as is obvious here.

  • Can't Burn Optical Disks on Powermac G5

I have two DVD drives on my PowerMac System - the original Pioneer drive in the tower and an external TDK drive (2004 vintage) that can be attached by either firewire or USB2. Neither drive will accept a DVD or CD to burn after installation of Tiger. Here's what happens:
When I insert the disk, I get a message that says:
"The disk cannot be used because it is not recognized."
If I go to the disk utility and request additional information, however, it clearly shows the drive, the media type (even though it does not show up on the desktop) and the media characteristics, e.g.:
    "Media is present: Yes
    Media is busy: No
    Media Type: DVD-RW
    Media is blank: Yes
Media is appendable: Yes." etc. etc.
This information is shown for both the internal Pioneer drive and the external TDK drive.
Finally, when I try to erase the drive in Disk Utility, I get the following message:
"Erase of optical media did not complete or completed with error."
    I have tried this with DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, CD-RW media. Same results in every case.
HOWEVER: HERE'S WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING: I can burn any supported optical disk on the internal drive of my MacBook Pro AND I can burn disks with the TDK drive attached to the MacBook Pro via USB2 but NOT attached via the Firewire port!!!! (The TDK drive will NOT burn on the PowerMac G5 regardless of how attached.)
Both optical drives were working on the PowerMac under Tiger and only stopped working after the Leopard install. Has anyone else had this burn problem on a PowerMac G5? I've found a few problems identified in this forum on reading installation disks, but few on burning CD/DVDs after installation. Is there a simple fix I'm not finding in the Leopard support resources or is this a significant bug in the 10.5 release?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Mike

This gets more strange by the moment. Toast will see AND burn the blank DVD/CDs when inserted, at least when using the PowerMac's internal Pioneer burner. (I haven't tried it on the external TDK burner.) I changed DVD/CD System Preferences from "Show in Finder" to "Launch Toast Titanium" and had no problems. The application launched on DVD insert and did the data burn flawlessly, though a bit slower than I remember it being on Tiger.
But there is still this inconsistency between the PowerMac and the MacBook Pro. On the former, Leopard simply refuses to recognize any media placed in the internal burner, but on the MacBook Pro insertion of a DVD/CD functions just like Tiger used to - mounts the untitled media on the desktop, allows drag and drop file adds, and allows burning by OSX finder or menu. Has to be some strange bug in Leopard code for a PowerMac G5.

  • How can I burn a disk of photos with a modified file name?

After importing photos from scan device, I use Photos > Batch > Change to rename files.  When burning a disk the changed file names do not transfer with the image but use the original file name.  How can I burn a disk of photos with the modified file name?
This is what I have done so far with no success.
Drag selected photos from Event to Burn Folder where the file names were changed. Burn folder lists file with original file name.
Drag albums to Burn Folder with the same result.
In Filer I am able to change the iPhoto Library > Master > Date > Filename and then drag to burn disk folder and see the changed name but this is a single file exercise without a view of the file's image, but to use the new file name in iPhoto events I have to repeat the naming convention.

    File > Export.
In the resulting dialogue note the "Name" section. Choose to use the Title as Filename.

  • Can't burn to disk

Working in an existing project that I've burned DVDs from before, I'm now getting a "formatting successful" message when I click the BURN button. I'm not getting the message to insert dvd and can not figure out how to get the program to give me that option. I tried building and formatting to a new folder, but still no option to burn to disk. Please tell me I'm doing something stupid that's easy to fix.
(is there a work-around using a different method to print the existing Video and Audio files to dvd?)

The workaround that works is making a disc image and burning in the Finder

Any details on the OS, version of DVD SP etc? Did you try deleting preferences? Also repairing permissions can help with gremlins such as this.

  • How can I burn a disk image using disk utility with an external device?

I am trying to burn a disk image on DVD using disk utility in OS 10.3.9.
When I click the 'burn' button only the internal CD-writer appears allthough an external DVD-burner is connected via USB 2.0.
Does anybody have an idea how to make disk utility recognize the external device?

    Try installing PatchBurn.

  • Subsequent to Tiger upgrade can only burn SONY disks

    Hi,
grateful for any help on sorting a SONY coup. After upgrading to Tiger my inbuilt SONY DVD Drive DW-U10A will only write to SONY disks - it refuses all other manufacturers. Before the upgrade it accepted all makes of DVDs and CDs. I've been trying to find a driver that might help but can't seem to get one.

    Welcome to iDVD Discussions.
it won't let me choose which one to use
Hold down the Control key when you click on the Burn icon.
But Fred's suggestion of a disk image is a better process.
    File/Save as Disc Image...

    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/image_to_diskstone.html
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Can't burn to disk -more

Me again. I notice that dm_photo had a similar problem posted Dec. 12. I did not see a solution posted. hmmm...I just spend some time on the phone with Apple Support and the guy there could not help me either, suggested I post to this discussion list.
The problem again, when I hit BURN, I get the "formatting finished" message instead of being prompted to load a dvd for burning. Same when using the pulldown menu to burn. It's the same with any project I open, so it seems to be a DVD Studio Pro issue, not specific to this project. I just can't get it to burn to dvd!
I would really like to figure this out. Please respond with any ideas! Thanx.

Try formating to hard drive instead of your burner. You should get a .img file that you can mount and test with DVD Player application. If that is working, you can burn the .img file to a DVD using Disk Utility. This would eliminate any issues between DVD SP and your DVD burner.

  • How Can I Burn a Disk with PE11?  Or do I use Media Player?

    Any help would be appreciated!

Is this question about Premier Elements 11 (you say PE11) ?  If so then try this:
Burn video files to a DVD/Blu Ray Disc
If you have Adobe Premiere Elements installed, you can burn media files to a DVD/Blu Ray Disc.
Select the media files you want to copy.
Select Share > Burn Video DVD/BluRay. Adobe Premiere Elements launches and enables you to burn the media files to a DVD or a Blu Ray disc.
If this doesn't work then try this link:

  • I can't burn a disk

I'm new to burning disks, but I followed the guide from this. The only problem was that it didn't work. I created a playlist, pressed "Burn Disk", and put the disk in. It says "Checking Media" for a while and then spits it out. Nothing is put on the disk.
I have a version 10.4.11 MacBook with a 1.83 GHz Intel Core duo processor and 1GB 677 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Memory. The disks I'm trying to burn are 700 MB (80 minutes).
Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you using a rewritable CD? If so, try a CD-R. Rewritables usually cause problems in burning playlists.

  • I can't burn music, or get pass checking media

Sadly I've tried everything I know to get iTunes to burn a CD. I get the
playlist all set up, adjust the preferences, click on burn, then it opens
the CD tray, I put a blank CD-R in, then iTunes says it’s ‘Checking Media’
which it does for a few seconds, then it just stops - no error message or
anything. The little window that says ‘checking media’ just goes back to the
apple symbol and nothing happens. Any others ideas as to what i should do.
I'm just hoping that i'm not the only one with this issue. Thanks

What are you trying to achieve?  Are you trying to burn to disk via the iPhoto Share ➙ Burn menu? That produces a mini library on the disk that can be used only by a Mac running iPhoto.
If you want to burn just some image files to a data CD/DVD disk then follow Larry's recommended workflow.
What disk type and manufacturer are your using? What system and iPhoto version are you running?  Have you run the OS X Mountain Lion: Use Apple Hardware Test? When did the burning proiblem begin?  If you can't burn a disk from the Finder then it's a hardware or system problem and not an iPhoto one.

  • Can't burn iPhoto slideshow to a DVD. Can you help?

I have made a slide show from photos in iPhoto.  It works fine and I have published it to my "me gallery".  I now want to make a DVD of this slideshow.  I have tried to use an old version of Toast and I get an error message after the slideshow has been formated and "supposedly" burned.  I've tried to burn it from the iTunes application and that doesn't work either.  Can anyone help?

The only way to get a slideshow into iDVD with the transitions, music, etc. that you see in iPhoto is to use the "Create" button in iPhoto to create the slideshow:
Then create the slideshow in the slideshow mode and use the Export button at the bottom to export the slideshow at a QT movie.
Since iDVD resized media down to 640 x 480 choose the size closest to that, but larger. Then open iDVD, select your theme and drag the movie into the menu being sure to avoid any drop zones.
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good and you can then burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Can I burn BluRay hi-def video W/ Final Cut Studio & external BluRay burner

    According to this Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/whats-new.html
and Selecting the demo video: “Easy Export”,
I should be able with a new iMac and the latest version of Final Cut Studio, edit high definition 1920x1080i video from my Canon HV30, select a beautiful menu with chapter markers from DVD Studio Pro, and export to an external Blu-Ray burner and produce a Blu-Ray DVD disc compatible with most Blu-Ray players.
Reading through these Discussion forums, I get mixed messages that this can’t be done, or can only be done with limitations, even using the latest FCP Studio suite of Compressor, DVD Studio Pro, etc.
Other forum contributors recommend using Boot Camp and PC video editing software to get the Blu-Ray DVD.
And please don’t tell me to use Toast 10 Titanium to burn a Blu-Ray movie onto a standard DVD. I never got a successful burn from Toast, and the menus/chapters just don’t work nor compare with iDVD.
I am currently successfully burning standard definition, 16x9 DVD’s using Final Cut Express 3.5 and iDVD 7.0.4 with chapters, beautiful menus, with background music, etc, … using a 2004 iMacG5 PPC. The DVD video looks pretty good, but it is not hi-Def, and inferior to the video coming out of the Canon when connected directly to my Sony Plasma.
Can I, or can I NOT, ……..burn hi-def 1920x1080 video onto BluRay media (with an external Blu-Ray Lacie? Burner) using a new Apple iMac and the latest Final Cut Studio software?
I’m having second thoughts about spending a lot of money with Apple to get this done.
    Thank You in Advance
    BoBo

Here's what you can do with the latest version of Final Cut Studio.
-From within Final Cut Pro you can use the Share function from the menu.
-This gives you several output options (DVD, iPod H264, etc..). Select BluRay
-Click the create disk checkbox and a menu will slide out. This will enable you to add a basic pre-made menu for the disc. There are a few options, some being built-in menus with animations.
-You can choose to export directly to a BD-R, to a DVD using AVCHD rendering, or to hard disk. I suggest hard disk. This will create a disc image file you can then burn using disk utility. FCP may start beach-balling during the burn process and you could waste a disc.
-You then can click create, OR you can click Send to Compressor after making your menu selections. From Compressor you can make additional settings changes.
I've been creating blurays this way since November. I use the Lacie external BD-R burner over USB. We've had a good experience so far. Some older bluray players will need their firmware updated to view these discs. While the quality isn't on par with hollywood produced blurays, it is still very impressive. The footage we've shot with the Panasonic AG-HPX170 and taken to bluray has blown our clients away.
Notes: You cannot view the bluray you've created on your mac. You will need to test the disc on a stand-alone player or a bluray capable PC. As mentioned earlier, the menus it creates are very basic but functional. Loop option, chapter menus, and chapter titles as subtitles are as advanced as it gets.
If you have additional questions please ask.

I can't burn a dvd using any method, idvd tells me that my super drive is missing, dvd studio pro quits when i click burn and disk utility keeps spitting the disk out when I click burn and enter the disk??? how do i repair my superdrive for imac, or how do I do whatever I need to do to get it working: I have already tried using a lens cleaning cd and also restored my nvram or something i forget what it was called but i restarted my computer holding down  command+optoion+p+r and still nothing???
Free solutions are the best, although if I have to pay I will, I would prefer to not have to buy an external burner if possible and already know that is an option so please don't give me that answer... thank you for any help you can give

Unless your iMac is still covered by AppleCare, get an external DVD burner.
You can get perfectly good ones from Amazon for less than $40.
