Can't change constrained proportions

I'm completely puzzled: I have a whole series of images I
need to optimize/reduce, and all three dimensions (w, h,
resolution) appear to be locked, with the constrain proportion box
grayed out. I'm using FW 8 on a Mac, and this appears to be a
fairly recent problem. What ridiculously simple solution am I
missing here? And why might it be happening with images I've
received from others? I've optimized many images in the past
without incident.

You didn't say which version you are using, but I am on CS3
and didn't
appreciate the other day when resizing a square with
dimensions something
like 196x196, typing 200 in the top box resulted in 201 on
the bottom and
vice versa. I had to uncheck constrain proportions to get
what I wanted.
This would seem like a programmatic no-brainer!?

How can I change the proportional font in Firefox?

I prefer helvetica font, so I have changed the fonts for webpages in Firefox settings to it (changed all fonts to helvetica, unchecked "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"). However, some webpages still display in what I presume is the seriff font under proportional font. It would be nice to get all webpages to display in helvetica font but it seems that firefox only allows seriff or sans seriff for the proportional font.
How can I make all the webpages display with the same font: helvetica?
Please do not tell me how to change the other fonts; once again, I have done that.
I only want to know if and how the PROPORTIONAL FONT can be changed or disabled, so that all webpages display in helvetica.

I found it. In fact, the proportional ask you if you prefer serif or sans-serif. Then, under this, you can choose what serif is, and what sans-serif is.
By example, I wanted my proportional font to be the Mona font. So I put sans-serif for proportional, and then I changed sans-serif for Mona.

Constrain proportions only working sometimes?

When holding Shift to constrain proportions and resizing using the scale tool, it only sometimes constrains proportions correctly. The other times the smart guides say it's constraining uniformly but it doesn't (the info display shows the width at 100% and the height changing though). This seems to happen when I click to the bottom right of the object, but not lower than the furthest bottom point of the object. Is this another "feature"? How do I turn it off if it is a "feature"?

Further clarification:
Normally when holding down shift and resizing with the scale tool it switches between resizing only the one axis (a smart guide line on the 90 degree axis) and resizing both axis' uniformly (a smart guide line on the 45 degree axis) depending on where my mouse is. When this problem manifests it only switches between resizing only the one axis (smart guide showing 90 degree axis) and some weird in-between state where the smart guide shows a +-30 degree axis line and states that it is a uniform resize and the info display shows only one axis resizing, yet BOTH are resizing, in a weird distorted proportion. It DOESN'T switch to a true uniform resize no matter where i move my mouse, and I have to release the resize, undo and do it again. I'm still not able to emulate this reliably so i can file a bug report....
I hope this isn't even MORE confusing...

Can't change size of attached photos when emailed.

I scan photos to my desk top and then work on them with Elements 8. I save back to my desk top. I try to attach them to a email and want to reduce the size. I set it for medium size but it only goes to a very small picture that is hard to see. It can not be enlarged when recieved. I can send as actual size and it will send them, but they are very big files. I can send a photo that has not been worked on with no problem. Am I changing the type, it says jpeg?

What is the original size in pixel dimensions of the scans?
(look under Image>Resize>Image Size to read the pixel dimensions and then just press cancel in the dialog)
You can reduce the pixel dimensions of the photo in the photoshop elements editor

Also when scanning you might want to save the scans to your desktop as tif files instead of jpegs.
You'll probably get better quality scans as the jpeg format can cause artifacts because of lossy compression.

Array of clusters and in the cluster is a bar meter, how can I change the color of the bar meter individually for each element of the array? I have just figured out that you can't change properties of one element of the array without all elements changing. For the scaling I had to make numeric indicators for each tick of the scale so that each bar meter in the clustered array would have individual scales. I also had to do some math to scale each barmeter to display correct proportions from 0 to 100%. Now I'm stumped on the color of the bar meter. Basically, if the value goes over a setpoint, the bar meter needs to turn red. It has to be in an array to be infinitely scalable.

You can't do that-
without a little trick.
You could consider laying a custom color box over the bar graph in the cluster you can set the color based on the value of the bar graph or even make a "Pseudo"- bar graph using a series of color boxes stacked to look lie a bar and changing values of the Color boxs from empty to full to red.

How to resize groups WITHOUT constraining proportions?

If I have e.g. group 3 boxes and I want to change their width I have to do this one by one because if I group them I can't uncheck "Contrain proportions". This changed with Keynote 6, before that it was easily possible to change widths of objects in one group. To me that looks like a usability fail...

If you had Keynote version 5 installed use that, it will still be in applications, in the iWork 09 folder.

Cannot uncheck "Constrain Proportions" in PS Elements 10 for Mac

I am using Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 for the Mac (running Lion). I want to adjust the image resolution without changing the image size.
When I go to Image -> Resize -> Image Size, the height, width and proportions are constrained together. The "Constrain Proportions" box is checked. I cannot uncheck it. Clicking on the chain icon does not help either. The image is a JPEG. Does anyone know what I have to do to be able to unconstrain proportions? Thanks in advance for your advice!

The answer: check the Resample Image checkbox.

Problem with scale tool locked on "constrain proportions"

I have no idea how that happened but suddenly my Scale Tool stopped working like it should be and works as if it was locked on "constrain proportions".
Whenever I try to scale an object (any object), if I try to scale it by dragging one of the transform bounding box corners, it scales like I would keep the Shift key pressed.
Is there a key shortcut that locks the "constrain proportions" setting?
I was trying to find an answer to that problem and it looks like there are people with the same issue but none of them got any answer.

I particularly liked its description of scaling using Pointer tool:
Instead of using the Scale Tool you can use the Pointer tool. The pointer tool can scale, auto shapes, bitmaps but cannot scale any path object or symbols. Rectangle Primitives are a special case, but if you ungroup it, then the pointer cannot scale it. Draw a circle/ellipse, polygon, or any auto shape and ungroup it to become a regular path, and the pointer tool cannot scale it. Draw a line with the line tool or a custom path with the pen tool, and the pointer tool cannot scale it.
What it doesn't mention is that you can basically surround anything with a Group, and then scale it using the Pointer tool—even objects that couldn't otherwise be scaled this way, like Symbols or Paths. So instead of selecting the Scale tool or the Transform command, you could group the selected object(s) using the Group command (e.g. ⌘G), scale non-proportionally or proportionally (with the Shift key) using the Pointer tool, and then Ungroup (e.g. ⇧⌘G).
It's an idea, anyway.

Using shift key to constrain proportions while scaling

I notice that using the shift key doesn’t currently constrain proportions when scaling objects. This is pretty standard behaviour in graphics apps and it would be good to have this included in Muse. There seems to be nowhere to manually enter a scale factor either, which would be useful.

Looking into this further, it seems that the behaviour is inconsistent. A placed rectangle object can be resized proportionally when constrained with the shift key, but this doesn’t work the same way when scaling a placed image. Additionally, using the crop tool on a placed image does allow constraint using the shift key.
Testing with grouped objects, a group of plain rectangles can be resized proportionally, but a group of images cannot.
The answer is to use the lock button when resizing images but it would be better if the behaviour were consistent across object types.

When clicking on the constrain proportions box in the Property Inspector in CS5, and using the scale tool, it seems like it scales in proportion without using the shift key on an image whether the box is checked or not? How is this supposed to work?

The feature is there so that you can numerically scale an object within the Properties Panel, without using the scaling tool.

Changing Font proportions

Does anyone knows if it's possible to change the proportion sizes of a font? I need to have a maximum of N characters in a certain space on a document, and it has to have a pre-defined height (12mm).
So it's a problem, because the horizontal space seems too small for the data to fit, and I need to keep the height and shrink the width.

You are probably correct that changing the actual font width isn't what you really need since it would change the entire document - in fact all documents using that font. I'd probably take an existing font definition file and rename it and make a reference to it in the printer definition file so it would become available for use. I've done that for printer definition files.
Are you sure you are using Adobe Output Designer that is used with Adobe Central Output Server? I am asking because there is no file such as you named in my "config" folder. No "PFA" files at all. I suppose it could be a language or national difference or more likely an operating system difference (Windows/Unix). In my USA/English/Windows version I have files like Arial.l4, Arial.pdm, Arial.pst, Arial.pxl. The extensions denotes PDF, PCL, Postscript definitions. They contain lines like the following:
Cwidth 32:11.576 11.576 14.791 23.173 23.173 37.048 27.791 9.257
Each line contains up to 10 entries with the number before the colon being the decimal value of the first character (32 is "space"). Which specific file goes with which font for a specific printer can be found in the printer definition file as an "include" statement at the end of the file. The specific printer configuration file is the value at the end of the line within square brackets [] that is shown when selecting a presentation target. Just add a
b .ics
extension and you have the file name. Open the file using a text editor.
You have a further complication with using the Arial font and variable data. I'm sure you know this but for the sake of an explanation: Arial is a proportional font so even if the number of characters is fixed the actual space required will vary depending on the actual characters. With a proportional font the letter "i" is much thinner than the letter "w". It takes almost 4 "I's" to occupy the same space as one "W".
What this means is that even if you could adjust the width of the characters when building the document that there would be no guaranty that the data would occupy the space you want it to.
I think that any software that lets you adjust the proportions of elements are graphical software. Adobe Output Designer, though you can include graphical elements, is textual software. Everything I've seen about it tells me that it works with fixed elements. Even bar codes have fixed proportions. Though they are graphical in nature you can't change the size of them like you can with most other software that includes bar code elements.

If I chose the wrong folder as defaulf for downloads to go to, how can I change it?

I use download manager. I hit '''yes''' when asked if I wanted to make the folder shown as the default for future downloads of that type. I did not mean to do that. How can I change the default folder?

Unless you are talking about the default action and not the actual download folder? If so, you should look at [[Options window - Applications panel]].

You can't change the display in the Mail app, if you are holding the iPad in landscape orientation then the left-hand third will be for navigation, and the right-hand two-thirds will be an email. If you hold the iPad in portrait orientation then the navigation section becomes a drop-down section.
