Can't change file names in finder

I can highlight a file or folder name in the finder but when I try to type nothing happens. Also I can't type anything in the search section in the upper right corner of finder windows.
All else seems to be working fine.
This happened after I installed Photoshop Elements 4.0

No problems since

  • Can not change file names in finder

    Several times over the past week I have not been able to change existing file names in Finder. The mouse moves normally and can highlight the name, but the keyboard instructions, including "delete" or typing, does not result in any response. All other programs continue to function normally.
    Restarting the computer solved the issue for a while, but it happened again.
    Reading over the previous posts, none of them apply (I do not have those programs).
    Any idea why this happens and how do I fix it?

    This same thing happens occasionally (or maybe rarely is a better word) for different users here at my work.
    I haven't had the problem myself, and thought it was gone now when everyone is running Mac OS 10.4.7 (we ran 10.4.5 just recently) but a user just got the problem 5 minutes ago. All apps except Finder respond to keystrokes.
    Relaunching the Finder using "Force Quit..." from the Apple solves it, but I guess sooner or later the problem will come back.
    Would be great to know what's causing it.

  • Can't rename file name under Finder even as an administrator.

    As an adminstrator to my MacBook Pro, why can't I rename certain file name  under Finder?

    Have you tried running lsof from the Terminal?
    Lsof will show you any files that are open, the likelihood is that your file is in use.

  • Can't change file names

    Since upgrade, I cannot change the names of my files as icons. I hold the button down for quite a while and occasionally it will let me, but this is rare.
    Any ideas as to why?

    No, it isn't gone, but I've always found it a wee bit tricky. To me the fastest easiest way is to click the icon once to select the file/folder, then move your hand off the mouse and hit the Return key. The name is then immediately editable, and your hands are both on the keyboard to begin typing.

  • How can I change the name of the file on iTUNES in mac?

    the files download with strings of letters and numbers and i want to rename, but can't figure out how?   Help!!

    I believe that once you add them to iTunes, iTunes itself will rename them to whatever makes sense for how the iTunes structure works (I can't say for sure, having disabled that feature in my iTunes 13 years ago).  That should be something like the track name.
    Again, you shouldn't have need to alter (and definitely avoid upon peril of messing up your iTunes library) anything that happens inside the iTunes folder.  If you need to copy the files to another location, drag them from iTunes to that location. Then you can alter the file names on those copies as iTunes will no longer use the copies it puts there.

  • How can I hide file names in a photostream?

    How can I hide file names in a shared photo stream on icloud.  I don't want people to see how many pictures I take at an event.  Can this be done to pictures already posted?

    The Shared Photo Stream uses the filename of the original image file as the title that is shown in the stream.  If you want to hide the original filename, export the image to a folder in the Finder, rename it, then reimport it to share it.  You can rename the files directly when exporting.
    Or, if you do not mind to change the names of the originals in Aperture use the command "Metadata > Batch change" and change the title of the image, with the option "Apply to Original file" enabled and "Add metadata from" set to "None".
    To rename the photos already shared, delete them from the Shared Album and share them again.

  • Batch change file names

    How can I batch change all my file names?

    I am having a similar problem in Lr4. I made the mistake of not specifying a custom name at the beginning of a big import and I now have hundreds of photographs called "untitled_date_picture name_sequence.dng" I have created a custom renaming action that I normally use for all imports except this time I forgot to specify the custom text part at the beginning of the file string.
    I cannot see how I can now batch change the "untitled" part only to show correctly. If I try and create a new renaming action by adapting a custom action i.e. by making the following:
    Peru_Date_File Name (or Original File Name)_Sequence, the 'file name' part is replaced by "untitiled_111002_P1000245_12" for example. I am guessing that this is becasue the 'file name' is the entire string and not just the P1000245 part only which is the name created by the camera.
    Any ideas how I can batch change the 'untitled' bit only or do I have to reimport the photos all over again?
    Alternatively, is there a way to do this with the file names in Finder? I'm on a Mac by the way.
    Many thanks
    Chris

  • Change file name with oreilly servlet

    I am using oreilly servlet package and I want to change the file name to the file I am uploading, is this possible ?
    How ?
    Thanks.
    here I post the servlet code:
    package com.reducativa.sitio.servlets;
    * DemoParserUploadServlet.java
    * Example servlet to handle file uploads using MultipartParser for
    * decoding the incoming multipart/form-data stream
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import com.oreilly.servlet.multipart.*;
    public class DemoParserUploadServlet extends HttpServlet {
    public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response)
    throws ServletException, IOException {
    PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
    response.setContentType("text/plain");
    out.println("Demo Parser Upload Servlet");
    File dir = new File("f:/");
    if (! dir.isDirectory()) {
    throw new ServletException("Supplied uploadDir " + "f:/ " +
    " is invalid");
    try {
    MultipartParser mp = new MultipartParser(request, 10*1024*1024); // 10MB
    Part part;
    while ((part = mp.readNextPart()) != null) {
    String name = part.getName();
    if (part.isParam()) {
    // it's a parameter part
    ParamPart paramPart = (ParamPart) part;
    String value = paramPart.getStringValue();
    out.println("param; name=" + name + ", value=" + value);
    else if (part.isFile()) {
    // it's a file part
    FilePart filePart = (FilePart) part;
    String fileName = filePart.getFileName();
    if (fileName != null) {
    // the part actually contained a file
    long size = filePart.writeTo(dir);
    out.println("file; name=" + name + "; filename=" + fileName +
    ", filePath=" + filePart.getFilePath() +
    ", content type=" + filePart.getContentType() +
    ", size=" + size);
    else {
    // the field did not contain a file
    out.println("file; name=" + name + "; EMPTY");
    out.flush();
    catch (IOException lEx) {
    this.getServletContext().log("error reading or saving file");
    }

    Hi there,
    I am facing the same problem that you have stated in your Feb 26, 2002 10:28 AM message regarding "change file name with oreilly servlet", I would like to change the file name to include a unique identifier upon upload, did you ever find a solution to your problem?
    Thanks!

  • Is it possible to change file name policy in the JRE cache folder?

    We are getting calls from our clients complaining of slowdowns in loading our Java applet. The reason is a virusscanner. If a virusscanner is in the middle, it can drastically slow down the download process, and therefore cause some high delay before the user can work on the our product as expected.
    On this csutomer's side, it may take up to 10 min (the first time it is ran) instead of 1 min. JRE 1.6 is in use.
    They dont want to exclude from antivirus scan all files from Sun\Java\Deployment\cache folder.
    Question:
    Is it possible to change file name policy in the JRE cache to make it less unique?
    Thanks,

    I suggest you solve the real problem - big files.
    There are two scenarios
    1. Initial download
    2. Updates.
    The first takes as long as it takes. No way around it.
    The second means that you can't use one jar. Otherwise every single update requires downloading the entire application every time. Multiple jars means only the one that changed is downloaded.

  • How can I change the name of a computer I'm getting rid of?

    How can I change the name of the computer to my granddaughter's name? It's now called "My name" G5 iMac. I would also like to delete that computer icon in my Devices on my MacbookPro.

    I guess my reply to these questions in your other topic did not help?
    The name of the computer is in System Preferences Sharing pane.
    If something appears under DEVICES in a Finder window sidebar, you can click hold on it and drag it off the sidebar. If it appears under SHARED, it should no longer appear there once if that iMac is no longer on your local network, or if you turn off its shared services in the Sharing pane.

  • Can't change group names.

    Anyone know why I can't change the names of my calendar groups? I right click > get info on the group and change the name from "group" to my desired name, and it just changes back to "group".

    Greetings,
    Anyone know why I can't change the names of my calendar groups?
    A bad cache or bad calendar database would be my first guess.
    Here are the steps I would try:
    Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches
    Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache)
    Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
    __NOTE: Removing these files will remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
    Once the computer is back up and running open iCal and test.
    Hope that helps.

  • How do I reconnect media after changing file name?

    The original file name is 1001.WAV I changed it to Take1 . How do I relocate the files? I use Pluraleyes to sync all my files.
    Cheers, Greg

    Change it back.  NEVER change file names in the Finder level if the media is in an FCP project.  Change it BEFORE you import it into FCP...or change the name IN FCP.  What you did was bad bad wrong wrong. Expecially since you already did things like sync it up with pluraleyes.
    Change it back.  Then change the name in FCP.

  • ADE changes file names

    The book I downloaded has each chapter as a seperate .pdf, each with it's own unique filename. ADE has retitled every chapter (.pdf) to the name of the book. Now that all the chapters have the same name, I can't transfer them to my Kobo. How do I change titles or get ADE to stop changing file names?
    Thanks

    Dimitri,
              As usual, thanks for the simple but informative explanation!
