Can't change "Logout after Inactivity" setting under Security in System Pre

When I try change the "Logout after so many minutes option", in System Preferences under Security, the change does not stick. I'm doing this as the admin user, unlock the lock, make the change, lock the lock, close System Preferences. When I open System Preferences, the change is gone. Is there a plist that manages these options under security? If so, where is it; what is it's name?
If not, any suggestions to make this change stick? I don't see any commandline option for systemsetup or pmset either.
Btw, is there a method or listing of which plists manage which items? Sometimes it's obious, other times not.
Thanks
Tom

I don't know a good answer to this but the following will work. log out of the managed account and log into an admin one. open system preferences and deselect the check box for parental controls on the managed account. close system preferences. open system preferences again and select the box for parental controls for that account again. this will wipe previous parental control settings so you'll have to set them all over again but at least it will undo that "always allow" thing.

    What is the problem specifiaclly?
If the images are intended for web use I would recommend converting them to sRGB which could be done with Edit > Convert to Profile or with File > Save for Web, but as including a Save step in Actions and applying them as Batch can sometimes cause problems I would go with regular converting.
You could also try Image Processor Pro.

  • How can you change the font size in the application and system headers?

How can you change the font size in the application and system headers?  I searched the system and finder prefs to no avail.  Changing the screen density is not a good option.
    Thanks

I downloaded Tinkertool.  Found the font section and increased the size of most selections.  The only thing that changed that I can see is the window label.  The apple line, bookmarks line, the tool bar in safari are all the same---font size of about 4.  Found the finder "show view options" but that didn't seem to change anything either.  I'll keep working.  Restarted all apps after changes as well.

  • Under Security in System Preferences I get "Preferences Error"

Under Security in System Preferences, when I click on Security I get the message "Preferences Error - Could not load Security".
This may be related to another problem I see. If I go into Accounts > Login Options, when I try to uncheck "Automatically log in", the window hangs.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
when I click on Security I get the message "Preferences Error - Could not load Security".Strange behaviour by System Preferences can often be fixed by trashing com.apple.preferencepanes.cache in Home > Library > Caches folder. But it may not help in your case, so it may help to look in your log files to find out why your preference pane is not opening.
The simplest way to look at log files is to use Console.
Open the Console application from /Applications/Utilities. It will default to showing the "console.log" and possibly the "system.log". Use the File menu if necessary to get both these logs open, and use the Broom to Clear both windows.
Now try to open the Security preference pane and see what appears in either of these windows. Copy and paste it here.
You may see a message saying "Crash report written to <pathname of crash.log>". If so, click on the "Logs" icon at the top left in the tool bar. Then, depending on the <pathname of crash.log> in your message, look under either ~/Library/Logs or /Library/Logs by clicking the disclosure triangle, then click the disclosure triangle for "CrashReporter".
Find the crash log corresponding to your message and select it. It will open at the end of the log. Look back for the last line of asterisks in the log, then post everything after that to the end of the log.

  • Can I change Characterset after DB Creation?

    Hi everybody,
Is it possible to change the parameter CHARACTER SET
specified in database creation after database is created? How can I support
customers who have a database installation with CHARACTER SET
as WE8ISO8859P1, now I want to change it to something else. Is
there any alternative to database re-creation? If not, then how
do I go about creating the database again while retaining the old data??
    Any tips, folks?
    Regards
    Sanchayan

Given that your current character set is WE8ISO8859P1, I don't think there are many places you can go. I think WE8ISO8859P15 (euro-support) would be be a strict superset but not much else; you need to check with Oracle what the valid ones are. This is because the character set determines how your data is encoded in the database: it's relatively simple to add new encodings to an existing set, but impossible to translate the current encoding to a new meaning.
If you want to change to (say) UNICODE then you'll have to do a complete export, recreate the database with the new character set and then import your data.
    Good luck, APC

  • Can't Change Wallpaper after 10.7.4 Install

Soon after install of Lion 10.7.4 I found that I couldn't change the default image: Andromeda Galaxy.jpg. This lead me to look at Desktop/Screen Savers, when I click on an available image supplied by Apple, NOTHING happens. NO image is set for desktop. The thumbnail loads in the little preview but the selection cannot be saved or changed in anyway.
    I have done these things...
    Run the Verify/Repair Permissions Utility.
Rebooted and restarted a zillion times.
Tried rename the DefaltDesktop.jpg in CoreServices
Read a bunch of blogs and whatnot, and tried to find and answer - NOTHING worked.
Before the install of 10.7.4 everything was fine. Now NOTHING. Just stuck on Andromeda Galaxy.jpg PERIOD.
I am scratching my head here. Been at this for hours, and still nothing. Can some please point me to fixes/ideas etc. I am fairly Tech Savvy, so whatever you suggest.
    Thank You!

Ok,  I did some research and figured out what was going on in my particular case.  I have been using Path Finder for a long long time, and have had it to cover up the regular desktop with its own.  In the past Path Finder would change automatically when the regular desktop changed.  HOWEVER it seems Apple disabled a system wide notification event in 10.7.4 that lets other applications know when the desktop changes.
    [[NSDistributedNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(desktopImageChanged:) name:@"com.apple.desktop" object:@"BackgroundChanged"];
So PathFinder was never getting notified of the change.  If I turn off PathFinder's desktop the main Finder desktop seems to be working fine.  There is actually a setting in PathFinder to use the desktop picture from the Finder desktop while using all the icons from the PathFinder desktop, so i am using that now, and it works great.  It is suprising that an option like this even exists, but fortunately it does.

  • Where can I change Firefox 4 default setting for proxy servers

I am working on setting up firefox 4 in a multi user environment in linux. In FF 3.x releases, I could go to greprefs/all.js area and make the changes in the all.js file to chagne settings globally. But, I could not find any such file for firefox 4.x installation (for linux).
Would you please advise where can I go about editing global setting in Firefox 4?
    thanks.

Maybe it works if you create file and place a files with the prefs in the defaults/pref folder.
You can use a mozilla.cfg file to lock prefs or specify default values.<br />
You can place a file local-settings.js in the defaults\pref folder to specify using mozilla.cfg.
You can use these functions in mozilla.cfg:
defaultPref(); // set new default value
pref(); // set pref, but allow changes
lockPref(); // lock pref, disallow changes
To prevent users from installing software use:
    lockPref("xpinstall.enabled" ,false);

When I got my iPhone I set my mail to my Gmail account and have now changed the account I used most often to another Gmail account. How can I change Mail so that it receives emails from the second Gmail account and not the first?

    Hey there 65asteroid!
I have an article that can help you set up your iPhone so that it will receive email from your new account:
iOS: Setting up an email account

In order to delete your old email account, you will want to go to Settings, then Mail, Contacts, and Calendars, then choose the account you wish to delete and tap "Delete Account." Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

  • Automatic logout after inactivity/idle

i am trying to setup an automated logout after an idle period for regular domain users. this is a lab environment running windows 7 enterprise x64.
we used winexit.scr before, but it looks like it is incompatible with windows 7. i have tried making a scheduled task for this purpose but it never executes. i found a program that will do the logoff and i tried to make a scheduled task to execute the program but it never triggers.
    has anyone done this successfully?

If someone asked how to shut off a car engine whenever the computer detected someone was speeding, would you just assume they thought through every possible scenario?  Would you want to have that car when you're rushing a loved-one to
    a hospital?  When you're passing a truck?
Ever worked at a place where the IT department implemented utterly stupid policies that caused you problems in getting your work done?  Gee, IT people couldn't
possibly make mistakes like that, could they?  Grow up.
Bints and dopedope, of the three of us only one has actually made an attempt to help anyone in this thread.

Configure The Windows 8 "To Work" Options
Talk about growing up, seems to me you're using some old playground tactics yourself (of the 3 fo us???.. that's a bit immature).   And I could not agree more with Bint's remarks as it never fails when trying to get help in forums.  It's as
if the question is dodged to ponder on some ridiculous moral epiphany tangent.  Grant it you provided possible solutions but had to interject your beliefs at the same time.  Of course that is your right and no one has to read them, but at the sametime
you should be willing to accept a little constructive criticism yourself. I don't know why people that posted in a forum 100's, if not 1000's of times feel they are the pontificators of all that is right when it comes to these kind of remarks.
Noel, just offer some solutions minus the judgement calls.  I think rewording your concerns (judgements)  like "you may want to make sure..."   would be more acceptable than your personal experiences with IT.    And for
the record, in a business or institution, those computers do not belong to the individual using them at that time and should adhere to policies set forth to them.  Otherwise suffer the consequences.

  • Can I change a dafault shadow setting?

Is there anyway I can permanently change the default drop shadow setting?

Yes. Have no doc open. Goto object...effects...drop shadow and make your adjustment. It should now be the default. This works with all tools. Have you ever noticed a default magically change? It's because you made a change to a tool while no object was selected/no document was open.

  • Automatic Logout after inactivity

I am trying to figure out the best way to 'kick' students off our lab machines at the end of the day.
As it is right now, the machines are set to 'log out after 30 minutes of inactivity' and to shutdown at 10:00pm each night. What happens is someone leaves and unsaved document open causing the logout and shutdown to be cancelled.
I understand the inconvenience that could be caused by giving forcing logouts and shutdowns, but I still want to.
Can the inactivity log out be given more power? Can I have the log out ignore unsaved work?

Thank you for your response, but that guide doesn't have any information on logging out users other than the security preference pane.
I have, however, been able to find a script which accomplishes the force logout of a user...
    kill -9 `ps -Axjc | grep loginwindow | grep student | cut -c 13-16`
Currently this script is scheduled to run to make sure the machines are able to shutdown each night.
While this gets me one step closer, I would like to run this script on inactivity instead. Can this be done..?

  • Why under security in system preferences can I not make changes?

When I go to change the settings under General in Security in the systems preferences on my Macbook Pro they are all grey except require a password and can't be clicked. I am trying to change the automatic logout time, but it won't let me. Please help!

Just to confirm, you click the lock, enter your admin password, the lock icon changes to an unlock icon, and all the checkboxes still remain grayed out?

  • Office 2003 Can't Save Files (after a while) under Windows XP ! [FAT32]

I've made a 30G Fat32 partition using Boot Camp and put XP2 on it, runs flawlessly. However, getting tired with the rosetta office under OS X, I switched to Windows last night for some heavy Word jobs (openning 4-5 20mb documents at same time).
The speed is much faster than Mac Office, however, something really annoys me: a while after I've openned a file, office actually delete the originally file and failed to save a new one !!! For example, i openned Project_1.doc, do some editing, leave it for a while, and then press save. Error promts out "failed to save the file, permission error blah blah blah" and then the Current Document name (appers on the top left corner of the window) change to ~WXXXX.tmp. The only way i can get around is to click save as, manually type a new file name and then save it. and the original Project_1.doc disapear!!
I almost paid heavily for this, after 4 hours work i was supposed to press the last Save. same error came out as expected, however some other windows pop up and shut the entire programme off (oh dear microsoft). As the original file has been magically removed, i get nothing... Thanks to long-time windows experience (fault torrent) I manage to recover my work from pieces of scratches (many pieces of ~WXXX.tmp) file, but this is wicked.
Anyone has any ideas whys that? i've use both mac os x start disc and MS chkdsk to test the harddrive, no problem.
    .... hmmm....

Noticed after testing that it was only shares on the xsan that were affected. If I created a share on the internal drive on the server, worked fine. That led me to this.
    http://stanford.edu/group/macosxsig/blog/2009/12/extendedattributes_office200.html
we run into the same issue, XSan 2.2 with xattr, reshared via SMB&AFP. The strangest thing was that the error occur only when you try to copy to NTFS-formatted disks, and not FAT. What did the trick for us was to comment this line:
    ; vfs objects = darwinacl,darwin_streams
in /etc/smb.conf and restarting the server. Banged my head on the wall for two weeks over this!
