Can't Check Mail Manually

I searched all over for the answer but can't find it, so i am hoping i hasn't been posted before.
Basically I want to only have Mail check my mail when I ask it to.  For years I had it set up to check every minute and I was happy with that.  But in the interest of efficiency, I want to only check my mail when I personally click on the "Get Mail" Button on the top left of the app.
I have gone into the preferences and have set the "Check for new messages" to Manually but it isn't working.  I am not running Lion yet, but this was also the same issue in Tiger and Leopard years ago.  Now I am trying to fix it for good in Snow Leopard in both my '07 macbook and brand new mac mini.
Is anyone else running into this problem and having the messages still come through every minute even though you have set the preferences correctly (to manually) and restarted your computer, etc.
Just so you know, I also tried "hourly" and the messages still come through every minute or really every time I get one.  Thanks for the help.

Go to Mail > Preferences > General and go to "Check for new messages:" and change it to "Manually". It should check email only when you click the Get New Messages button.
There is an outbox, but it's not a place to store emails like in Outlook. If you want to write an email but not send it, write the email (you don't have to address it if you don't want to), and go to File > Save. This will save the email in the DRAFT mailbox. So you definitely don't have to send what you write right away--Creating a Draft is the way to go.

what does checking mail manually mean on a macbook air, how is it done?

In Mail's preferences click on the General icon in the toolbar. Here you can set Mail to automatically check for mail Manually.
Then to check for mail you would have to click on the Get Mail icon in the mail browser window:
which is the icon that looks like an envelope.

  • Mail ignores setting to check mail manually

Before downloading to Mail I prefer to check what is on the server so I can delete unwanted professional email and have only the ones I want come through to my computer.  This has worked very well in the past when I've set Mail to check for new mail "Manually".  But in recent years and OS's it fetches mail without waiting for me to click the "Get Mail" icon.
The only work around I've found is to un-click the "Enable this account" button in Mail Preferences.  This is a royal pain and takes extra time going back and forth from my email to Account Preferences, and when the account is not "enabled" I cannot see all of it's content in Mail.  Sometimes I have to turn off wifi to view my content without having it fetch unwanted email, another nuisance work around.
Why does Apple have a "Check Mail Manually" setting if it does not work???  Why does Apple assume everyone wants to download all of the email that arrives on the server?  What happened to giving us a choice?  Please bring back the user-friendly Apple that I grew to appreciate and now miss.

Do you mean this happens once when you launch Mail.app, or it continues to happen periodically after you've launched the application and while it continues to run?
If it's the former, this is a known issue that Apple introduced with 10.9 Mail.app; you can try filing a bug at https://bugreport.apple.com - they closed mine as a duplicate of an existing bug (14155759) when i filed 11 months ago and proceeded to do nothing about it through the 10.9.1 - 10.9.5 releases.

  • Can not check mail on ox 10.6

can not check mail on ox 10.6 and PC , andriod Phone , the response are "incorrect password or user name"
please  any one can tell me how to solve this

This looks to be a problem with the email service you are using. Go to the email service's website and change your password from there. Then you should be able to access your mail once again with the new password.

  • I can't setup mail manually.

I can't setup mail manually. No Preference pane shows up when selected under the mail tab. I set my mail account automatically but I can receive mail but cannot send and want to configure the settings manually. It's a gmail account but without a gmail domain. OSX 10.9.3 MBP 15" Retina, Mail 7.3 (1878.2). This particular Mail account works fine on my desktop and on my iOS devices.

    Quit Mail
Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.)
    Scroll to Mail folder.
    Rename Mail folder to MailXX
Open Mail, it will open with no data.
Can you see the Mail Preferences window?
If no, test in a new User.
    CREATE A NEW USER
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups (Accounts. in SL) Switch to the New User by logging out under the Apple in the Menu Bar.
You can skip the Apple ID setup.
    Open Mail.
    Is Preferences window available?
If yes, then the problem is with your base files.
If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.
Let me know what you find.

  • Checking mail manually

Hi - I have set mail preferences to check for mail Manually and turned 'push ' off in settings>mail etc..>
But when I open mail inbox, it checks for mail automatically. Can I turn this off properly ?
    Thanks

Not unless you delete the mail account off.
Mine does the same, only when you go in to the mail icon. Theory is you would only press that if you wanted to check mail or read old mail so will obviously look for new mails.

  • Must check mail manually on 3G phone - doesn't come through automatically

I only receive e-mails if I touch the mail icon and the iPhone checks for mail. No alerts come through on its own, as it did on my original iPhone.
    Any suggestions?

    Again, thanks for the replies.
What's strange is that I 'handed down' my original iPhone to my son, and I had installed 2.0 on that phone - which obviously has the same settings options (his is set on manual) - and he still gets e-mails immediately. I think I'm missing something.
Also - is MobileMe the only solution? In order to have near immediate e-mails you must pay for that service?
Thanks for the help. I guess I knew less about the upgrade than I thought.

  • IPhone5 - Can't Check Mail w/o Wifi...

Hi, I'm a Sprint user and recently switched from an Evo 4G to the iPhone 5.    The iPhone works great on my home wifi, but when I go out, I can't access my mail.  I have several accounts (yahoo, gmail, etc), and all of them say "Cannot get mail" claiming there is no internet connection.
    Other notes:
-I regularly used internet on my Evo 4G (using 3G network) without any problems at all.
-I have cellular data turned ON in my phone settings.  Roaming is off, but I'm nowhere near an international border.
-LTE is also marked on, but I don't think I have that in my area.
-Other features seem to work ok-- like maps, and browsing on the web (though its very slow.)  Siri works sometimes, but is very slow when not on Wifi.
-My connection indicator shows 3-4 bars, and consistently says 3G active.
So why wouldn't mail work at all?  It consistently fails.  Any clues or advice?
    Thanks...

Try deleteing and readding the account.

  • Can't check mail on iPhone 4S

I have an iPad 2. I have a Yahoo mail account and a gmail account. I recently bought a iPhone 4S. These accounts do not appear on my iPhone when I tap the mail icon. I can view my gmail if I go to the Google website, then go to mail. Why doesn't it just appear when I tap the mail icon?

You have to set up your mail accounts in your iphone. mail accounts wont sync between idevices.

  • "Cannot Get Mail" When Checking Mail on Yahoo Account after 1.1.2 update

I recently updated iPhone to 1.1.2 and now cannot get yahoo email. 1.1.1 worked fine. When I attempted to check for e-mail on iPhone it returns error "Cannot get mail: The user name or password for "imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com" is incorrect." I have checked my username and password and I am positive that it is correct. I just logged onto the yahoo mail website with the same username and password that I entered into my iPhone. BTW, I have only alphas for a password and I also tried updating my password online and then modifying the iPhone to match. It authenicates the password when updating the account but will receives the same error above when attempting to update e-mail. I just have the standard yahoo account which shouldn't matter because it is the one that i used on 1.1.1. I have tried everything i can think of and just cant seem to get it to work so I'm hoping someone here can help me out. Thanks

I have a new iPhone with 1.1.2 and have this same problem. My Yahoo mail is set up correctly, and I can send mail from the mail client, which shows up when I check my 'sent' folder on yahoo using the browser interface from my computer.
I can't check mail - I get the "The user name or password for "imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com" is incorrect. Since I can send email from the iphone, and then see what I sent on both my work email and in my 'sent' folder, it's not a user or pw setup problem.
I tried turning it off and on and that didn't do it. I have a free yahoo account, so I believe I have to use the Y! option.

  • IPhone checks mail randomly

Just over the past couple of months, about 1 out of 10 times after I unlock my 3G iPhone, it checks my email in the background without my entering the Mail application.
In Settings I have check mail set to manual in all occurrences. I have had an iPhone since Day 1 and have always had mail on manual check. This has not been a problem until recently.
The result is miserably slow performance while mail is checking in background.
    For example, just now:
    1. iPhone not in use all afternoon. I pick it up, press the round button, then unlock it.
    2. Press Phone icon, find contact, touch phone number to initiate call
    3. During call, I have to check my Calendar. I press round button, but it takes 10 second to bring me to Main Menu screen.
    4. I press Calendar icon, and it takes 20 seconds to display my calendar
    5. Just as my Calendar displays, iPhone "dings" with incoming email alert tone
    6. I finish phone call. Open Mail application, and sure enough, I have new mail.
In this case and all others, I never touch the Mail icon and have all settings to check mail manually.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?
Is this a bug or a feature?

    Almost.
The iPhone is designed in nature to be 'always on' i.e. connected to the internet and active all the time. This particular topic has been raised before and I recall had to be 'pruned' of some of the more vociferous comments.
It is as it is, and more sending of feedback is the best option as without such feedback in volume, Apple are not likely to view it as a significant requirement. I do not have knowledge of Apple's plans but given most people have data plans such that email volume is not a price sensitive issue, it will in my view, be way down the list on development priorities.

  • When opening my Outlook 2010 with new added e-mail account with Exchange Server, I have to click manually on my standard e-mail account for checking mail

When opening my Outlook 2010 with new added e-mail account with Exchange Server supplied by my employer, I have to click manually on my standard e-mail account for checking mail. Do I have to upgrade my Microsoft Office 2010 or how can I make my Outlook
2010 check all my four e-mail accounts without manually click on my accounts?
    Sincerely
    Ketil Hothorp

    Hello Ketil,
    Good Day...
Seems to be the Issue is Syncing emails, now I would recommend you to Remove and Add the Account and try and check if the emails are getting synced automatically.
Hope this is with Single User. If it is with Multiple Users then we need to check the permissions assigned.
    Regards,
    Praveen

  • Iphone automatically checks mail even though it's set to "manual" check

In settings > mail, Auto-check is set to manual, but my phone still vibrates and beeps periodically -- even when it has been asleep and I'm not touching -- announcing that new mail has arrived.
I'm using it to check a yahoo and a gmail account. Why is it still checking mail automatically?

Actually I just figured this out myself. You can turn it off by going to
    Settings > Mail
and then clicking on your yahoo account. At the very top of the screen for your yahoo account settings, there's a button that says "Account ON or OFF"
Switching it to OFF means it won't show up at all in your mail program but it also won't push. Switching it back on makes it show up immediately in your mail program again.

  • Treo keeps checking mail even though set to manual update

I have my email update set to manual.  But my 800W keeps checking for email.  It's running my battery down.  Short of deleting the email account and starting over, what am I doing wrong?
Background: When I first got the phone, I stupidly set it to check mail every few minutes until I realized that ran my battery down in about 5 hours.  I set it to 'once per day' and it worked fine.  Then a couple of weeks ago, I temporarily set it to 5 minutes or something like that for a specific situation.  I then tried to change it back to once per day and/or manual.  The value shows 'once per day' on the options page.  But it ignores it now.  Not sure how often it checks.  But i get email notifications almost instantly every time an email arrives.  And my battery is dying again.  I've tried changing it around several times, rebooting, etc.
Anybody ever seen this?  Am I missing something obvious?
    Thx
Post relates to: Treo 800w (Sprint)

Thanks for the response.  I had long since tried everything you suggested.
I did quite a bit more testing and googling, and  I think I've resolved it.  But there are definitely some serious problems (My feeling is that these are code defects) in the 800w that caused this.
    1) I created a new email account on my 800w, taking all of the default values
    2) I set the email scheduler refresh rate on the account settings page to 1 day.  But I found later that it made no difference what I set it to.  Same results
    3) I have my own hosting business and host my own email pop server.  So I have easy access to the POP logs.  Here is a snippit from the pop logs with "refresh rate = 1 day":
    12/12/08 21:07:31 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:08:40 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:09:52 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:11:04 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:12:16 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:13:28 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:14:40 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    12/12/08 21:15:53 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.************************.com from 174-149-227-149.pools.spcsdns.net
    4) Note the time between each line.  It's basically exactly 1 minute + 10-13 seconds.  The 10-13 seconds is the processing of the POP call.  When the POP call ends, it waits precisely one minute and checks again.  I want to point out that there isn't even an OPTION on the refresh menu on the 800w to refresh once a minute. But it is indisputable from the log on my mail server that this is indeed what is happening.  (I set up that pop mailbox specifically for my treo, and no other client mail app is accessing it.)
    5) I changed all the values on the refresh time menu, and even turned off 'Send/receive when I send" option.  I wasn't sending anyway.  But I was just grasping at straws.
    6) I then discovered that there are TWO places to set the refresh rate (???? that's a good design????).  If you open the inbox and select Delivery Preferences from the menu, there is ANOTHER checkbox to "Connect and check for messages every...." with an entry field to enter the number of minutes.
    7) Ok.. this is the defect in the code:  That checkbox was OFF, and the entry field was gray.  That obvious has to mean that I don't want to autocheck anything.  (and that is the default way it comes up on a new account, which makes sense).   But it appears the checkbox is being IGNORED in the code.  It was indeed checking.  And I suspect the empty grayed 'minutes' field was probably returning 0 or something like that to the code.  So ignoring the checkbox and having a zero minutes refresh rate, it was probably defaulting to a minimum of 1 minute.  But it should NOT be refreshing at all with that checkbox off.
    8) I turned the checkbox ON and set the value to 15 minutes:
    12/12/08 22:18:34 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.*******************.com
    12/12/08 22:34:09 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.*******************.com
    12/12/08 22:49:46 INFO  pop3server: Connection for treo.*******************.com
    9) Note that as soon as I checked the checkbox and set the refresh to 15 minutes, that is indeed precisely what I have in my POP log.  Oh, yeah... by the way... the much more obvious "Automatic Send/Receive" setting on the account menu is still set to 1 day... (why is that page and option even there???)
    10) So in summary, you have one scheduler where the user can set a value that is completely ignored.  And you have a buried checkbox that defaults to off and the code apparently doesn't check it and assumes it's always on.
I don't need any additional help.  It's working now.  But I think someone in development needs to take a serious look at how this is working based on my scenario and analysis above.
    Thanks.
