Can't choose download folder with Image Capture

Hi,
I am using Image Capture and am not able to choose the location where I would like to save my images. When I click on the "Download To:" pulldown menu, it is grayed out and blank, with a single checkmark.
Additionally, when I click on "Preferences" in the File menu, nothing happens.
I've tried removing the preferences file and have made sure I have the most updated version of Tiger. Any other suggestions as to how to fix this problem? I have used Image Capture in the past and really like it; I'm not sure what caused this to happen.

Francine, thank you so much for the tips. It took me over two months but I finally got around to trying to take care of this.
I tried your suggestions in order. Steps 1-3 did not fix the problem, but reinstalling from Pacifist did (thank goodness!). Wish I had tried that from the get-go.
Thanks again to everyone for all the suggestions.
There are a couple of things to try:
1. If you haven't done so lately, try Disk Utility
and Repair Permissions. Won't hurt, it's quick and
easy, and there is a remote possibility that it will
help. It actually does occasionally fix something
strange like this.
2. Go to http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ and
download the COMBO 10.4.8 updater (it is huge, like
148MBs) and run it, then Repair Permissions again.
3. Restart and hold down the Shift key when you hear
the startup chime. This will force the computer to do
a Safe boot. When you see the splash screen saying
"Safe Mode" release the Shift key. The boot will take
longer than normal as the system repairs the disk,
empties font caches, and disables startup items. Not
sure if Image Capture will run correctly with some
Apple startup items disabled, but you can try it.
Restart normally afterwards.
4. You can download Pacifist here:
http://www.charlessoft.com/
It will extract things from your Install disk so you
can install only what you need, in your case Image
Capture.
My Image Capture has never had a problem, so I'm
afraid all I can recommend is these general
approaches. Hope one of them helps.

  • Problem with Image Capture Download Folders

Hi there - I was wondering if anyone might be able to help with a problem I'm having with Image Capture (version 3.0.3 (333))?
I use image capture to download photos from my digital camera and normally have no problems.
When I tried to do some downloads this morning, my normal list of folders in the "Download to" drop-down box is completely blank. It didn't even have the "Other" option to chose a folder. The Automatic Task drop down was also blank, I could not open preferences and in the "options" box, the ColourSync profile would not load anything.
I could not download the photos to anywhere - when I tried to "download some" it gave me an error message saying that I need to choose a download folder, but of course I am unable to do this.
This morning I tried repairing permissions in disk utilities, and removing the com.apple.imagecaptureapplist file and rebooting as suggested here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10368631&#10368631
but that hasn't worked completely. I can now download the photos but they just automatically go to the "Pictures". At least I can download them now, but if I can get the two drop down boxes working again, and the other things working (preferences etc), that would be great.
One other thing, about a month ago I foolishly tried to rename my Home Folder without doing it the proper way. I had thought I had gotten everything back to normal with my library etc, but maybe there are a few unknown implications still out there, and this is one of them as I don't think I have tried to download any photos since then.
    Your help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Antony

    Hi and thanks again
    OK:
    1. I found the photo and have put it back as the login page icon as close as I could to what it used to look like..
    2. I trashed the user's .com.apple.systempreference file but it didn't work.
    3. I then copied my .com.apple.systempreference file to their library>preferences folder but no luck.
    4. Finally, I noticed the other user account had no system preferences file in their "Applications" folder. So I copied the system preferences file from my application folder across and used that to open system preferences, and that has seemed to fix it, ie. system preferences now opens directly from the apple menu.
So I am noticing a few things now:
    5. The other user's "Applications" folder doesn't have many applications in it. It only has:
    - Utilities
    - Adobe Version Cue CS2
    - Real Player
    - iTunes (which was only downloaded there recently - post Home Folder name change I think)
    - Imagecapture which I copied there yesterday
    - and now System preferences
    6. This is compared to my user account applications folder which has loads of other files in it, eg. Preview, Stuffit Expander, iDVD, iChat, Calculator, Chess, Skype, etc etc etc. I just can't remember if this was the case before the Home Folder rename.
    7. Now, my user account used to be the only admin account, so it makes sense that my "Applications Folder" has more in it because programs could only have been downloaded there for a long time. The other person's user account has only been an admin account much more recently - say in the last year and very few applications (if any) would have been downloaded there.
    8. Interestingly, while the other user account doesn't have the Skype or Preview file in their "Applications" folder, it does appear in their bar along the bottom of the screen that has the dashboard and finder icons (is this called the dock?).
    9. Anyway, if you are in the other user's account and you click on Skype, iCal, Word or Preview in their Dock for example, those programs open no problem so the dock icons must somehow have survived the Home Folder renaming and stayed linked to the corresponding files in my "Applications" folder? But some other programs, eg. system preferences, image capture etc didn't survive it and became "delinked".
    10. I also notice internetconnect still works in the other user account, even though there is no internetconnect file in that user's "Applications" folder.
    11. So it seems that some links between the other user and my account have been severed, and some have survived.
    Some other information:
    12. Everything that was on the other user's desktop appears to have been recovered since the Home Folder debacle (I think getting the Library back helped this?), and I managed to redo the desktop picture/wallpaper.
    13. I'm not sure if it is relevant, but in my account, Finder has a side bar on the left that is divided into an upper section and a lower section. The lower section has my home folder, a documents folder, a desktop folder, a pictures folder etc. On the upper section it has the macintosh disk icon, and also a Network Icon (that contains a library file and another file which I can't remember just now but can let you know if that helps). The other user account does not have the Network icon however. Do you think this might make a difference?
    14. In addition to the other user account there is also a guest account on this computer which has suffered the same problems, eg. not being able to open imagecapture or systempreferences. However, when I fixed the problems in the other user account by copying over the imagecapture and system preferences files from my account to the other user account, the problems in the guest account were automatically fixed!
    15. So it seems the guest login is somehow linked to the fixes in the other user account, but the other user account and the guest account are suffering some problems with links to my user account. Perhaps the latter was badly broken with the Home Folder rename incident?
    16. Finally, if you go into Finder while in the other user's account, you can navigate to the applications folder in my account and access all the applications there, ie. Macintosh HD>Users>MyHomeFolderName>Applications. My applications folder is not blocked like some of the other ones, eg. Library, Desktop, Pictures etc.
    17. Is there someway to re-establish the link between the other user account and my application's folder? I don't want to copy all the applications across even if I can do that, because it just takes up more space on the HD, but if that is all that can be done, then I will consider doing it...
    Thanks again BDAqua!

  • How can I control dpi when importing with Image Capture?

This is not really an iPhoto question, but there is no forum for Image Capture - and I am hoping some iPhoto user has discovered a solution.
I usually import my digital camera images into a folder using Image Capture, apply Photoshop corrections, THEN move the adjusted and re-named images to iPhoto for organization and storage.
When I open the images for the first time in Photoshop, the Image Size box always shows the resolution as 72 dpi. I can easily convert this to 300 dpi in Photoshop, but I would prefer to avoid the extra step for every photo.
So far, I have not been able to find any setting in either my camera menus or Image Capture to change the default from 72 dpi to 300 dpi - any suggestions?
I am using Image Capture v3.0.3, Mac OS v10.4.11 and iPhoto v7.1.5
    thanks,
    -gw

Old Toad said: "If these services printed your files at 72 dpi you would end up with very large prints."
Obviously - which is exactly what I want to avoid!
In fact Photoshop tries to do that, warning me: "The image is larger than the paper's area, some clipping will occur."
Terence Delvin said: "When you print the density of those pixels will determine the quality of the print. So, change the density and the dimensions change. Change the dimensions and the density changes. See the relationship?"
Yes, I understand all that perfectly.
I guess my real question should have been:
"Are there any print services or page-layout-type software applications that honor the exif data and try to print or re-size using a print resolution of 72 dpi without making the user re-define the density to something more print friendly?
    For example:
I have a 3936x2624 pixel image for which Photoshop's Get Info shows the print resolution as 72 dpi. If I drag that image into a Microsoft Word document, then Word does some kind of magic resizing to fit the image on the width of my 8.5x11" document. With margins, the image is now about 4x6". Looks good on my screen (but then even a 72 dpi image would, wouldn't it).
Obviously, MS Word downsized the image, but I can't find any way to make Word show me what print resolution it is choosing to assign to the resized image. It looks fine when printed, so I'm pretty sure that, in this case, something higher than 72 dpi was used.
If ALL software of this type (word processing and page layout) automatically ignores the 72 dpi print resolution in the EXIF data when resizing, then it's a non-issue, as you suggest. Lacking, much real world experience with print-based projects, I wasn't sure if it was something to worry about - apparently not?
    Thanks,
    -gw

  • Can I scan documents with Image Capture?

I can no longer scan documents with my HP printer now that I have Maverick.  I can scan pics with Image Capture.  Is there any way to scan documents with image capture or with some other software?

Don't feel bad you are not alone.  I have a HP photosmart C4780.  Since upgrading to Mavericks it has been difficult to use the scan feature except via image scan.  I spent well over a month on the HP forums trying to discern whether or not new drivers were being developed and essentially got the run around.  Very crappy service from HP.  I'll not purchase one of their products again.  It appears that my all in one (which I brought through the Apple Store) is obsolete.  Anyone got any advice.  I'm contemplating seeing how many pieces it will shatter into upon being launched from my window.

  • Problem with image capture

I am having a weird issue with Image capture. When I connect my digital camera, my computer does not always recognize that there is a digital camera being attached, so I can not get the camera to mount and get the pictures of the camera.
It is not a cable issue. The camera mounts instantly when I use a Win 2000 machine that I have at work using the same cable. I have tried to reformat the SD card several times.
I have OS 10.4.8 on a 17 inch iMac Rev B). I have iPhoto v 5.0.4. This used to work very well initially, and has steadily gotten worse.
    Any tips? Thanks
    17 iMac Rev B   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

    Hi, Romulo.
    1. What make/model of camera? Is it listed on the Mac OS X Digital Camera Support page?
    2. Since you've mentioned Image Capture, I presume you do not mean iPhoto, i.e. you expect the Image Capture application (located in the Macintosh HD > Applications folder) to launch when you connect the camera. Is the camera recognized in iPhoto?
    3. Try connecting the camera to a different USB port on your Mac. If you're connecting the camera to a USB hub (and your keyboard is a USB hub), try connecting the camera to a USB port directly on your Mac.
    4. Is the camera battery fully charged, or is the camera powered via an AC power supply when you connect it to the Mac?
    5. Try deleting the Image Capture preferences. There are at least four preferences files associated with Image Capture:• The file com.apple.ImageCaptureApp.plist in your Home > Library > Preferences folder.
    •  In your Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder, the files:• com.apple.ImageCapture2.xxx.plist
    • com.apple.ImageCaptureExtension2.xxx.plist
    • com.apple.ImageCaptureCamera.xxx.plist
where xxx is an alphanumeric string.6. You indicated the problem is intermittent: are you using certain other USB peripherals when the problem occurs vs. when it does not?
    7. Immediately after the problem occurs, check the ends of these Console logs for clues. Clues might include messages related to Image Capture or USB at the time the problem occurs.
    Good luck!

  • Trouble Printing PDF's scanned with Image Capture

OK this is a strange problem.  I have Macbook Pro and a Lexmark E230 laser printer which prints everything out just fine in safari, word, pages, numbers - anything except PDF's that are specifially scanned with the Image Capture application.
I printed four PDF's that were made from different sources, some just assembled JPEGs, one that was text printed from Pages, and another instruction manual randomly downloaded from the internet.  All printed fine.
My wife and I scan a lot for our home business and any PDF that we have scanned using Image Capture prints only the first page, then hangs, and then the rest of the document does not print.  If I try to print the second or other pages manually, I get an error printed on the page saying :
    ERROR: limitcheck
    OFFENDING COMMAND: image
    STACK:
    And the image partially prints.
I am aware of all driver issues, have tried using old drivers, completely reset the print system using the OPTION and ( - ) key in the printer system prefs.  I have also used the most up to date drivers, nothing seems to change this.  I am also aware of a printers limitations as far as using images or PDFs with a lot of memory.
The thing that makes me confused is that this all seemed to work perfectly before (in Lion) and even during the inital stages of Mountain Lion.  At some point (this is on my wife's computer), I'm not sure when the issues started exactly, I was unable to print PDFs scanned with Image Capture properly.
This used to work, now it doesn't.  Printer hasn't changed, types of documents haven't changed.  Any ideas?
    Thanks so much,
    Jim

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, bubblebanium!
I have experienced your problem on several occasions and found the culprit to be a corrupt font. Try selecting everything in the document and changing it to a font that you are certain prints. If the problem persists, try copying everything and paste it into a new document. If your document is several pages, try printing one page to hone in on the problem.
If the problem still persists, does your document have bullet items? If yes, and the bulleted items were created with the automatic bullet feature, then the problem may be the default font used for that feature (most likely the Symbol font).
To change to a different font, go to the Format menu, select Bullets and Numbering. Click on the style of bullets your document uses and then click the Customize button. In the next window, click on the shape of bullet your document uses and then click the Font button below. A Font window appears in which you can then select a different font. Afterwards, if the document prints, then the default font is probably corrupt and you may want to replace it with a good copy.
    Hope this helps.

  • Pentax DSmobile 600 with Image Capture only sayd "No paper loaded..."

I was using Paperless to scan documents, but Paperless is not fully working on Snow Leopard yet. I re-installed the Pentax DSmobile 600 TWAIN driver tonight, but I still cannot scan documents into my Mac.
If I select "Flatbed" as the Scan Mode, I can get it to "Overview" a document quite nicely. But when I tried to scan it it doesn't go well. When I use "Document Feeder" as the Scan Mode, Image Capture just sits there saying "No paper loaded..."
A workaround is to "Hide Details" at which point it seems to start allowing me to scan again.
Is this a bug with Image Capture?
    To reproduce:
    * Open Image Capture
    * Choose Show Details
    * Select "Flatbed" as the scan mode
    * Select "Document Feeder" as the scan mode
    * "No paper loaded..." displays on the screen, Scan button disabled.
    * Click "Hide Details" and you can Scan again.

Does anyone happen to know if there are other SW packages that enable calibration of this scanner? I've already tried (and let expire) Paperless and currently have a brand new but useless dsmobile 600 sitting on my desk - which I ironically chose over other models because of the recommendation by Mariner software for this:

  • Another Epson scanning problem with Image Capture

I've been having problems scanning with an Epson CX5600 for the previous month. I can print just fine, just can't scan with Image Capture or Vuescan (not so good free software). I always get "An error occurred during scan". I've tried repairing permissions, installing Gutenprint/cups drivers, all epson drivers on the site, and deleting ALL drivers in /Library/Printers/, which later it proceeded to download the Epson drivers automatically and still fail. Any idea? My dad's unibody MacBook works just fine with Photoimpression 5 and Image Capture.

  • Can't Select File Format in Image Capture

I just installed SANE software to support my old HP 5470c scanner on my new Mac Mini running Lion. If I select Color or Black and White, I can't select a file format. If I select Text, I can choose TIFF, PNG, or PDF. Also the Scan button only works in Text mode, presumably because a file format is not selected. Is this an issue with Image Capture or did I need to set up some file formats some where?
    Thanks,
    Curt
P.S. I can get a color scan in basic mode although the scan itself is corrupt.

I had a similar issue where only a few file formats were available when color was selected (png, tiff and something else, which i knew was weird because i've always scanned to jpeg and that was not an option). The menu went back to normal, fully populated with all of the file formats once again when i toggled the DPI menu. I had been at 300 DPI, I simply switched it to 100 and then back to 300, and suddenly I had twice as many formats to choose from. Hope that helps.

  • Epson scan under Lion with image capture

The first scan I made with image capture at 150dpi appeared usable.
However the letter scanned was no longer white but slightly green and pink and the file size was at 3,8Meg!
    A pdf at 150dpi for an A4          :          3,8M
    A jpg at 150dpi for an A4          :          549Kb
    A pdf at 96dpi for an A4           :          1,5M
    A jpg at 96dpi for an A4           :          209Kb
With the Epson Scanner Software I had good rendering and an A4 page was around 100 and 200Kb in jpg or pdf.
What’s going on! The new software caused a 1800% increase in the file size!
I am stuck with my scanner and papers.
    The image correction is limited.
The pdf files created are enormous.
There is no way we want to work and start to store this files!
A quick solution is needed to correct the situation.

A bit of history taken from Wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta_%28software%29
Rosetta is a dynamic binary translator for Mac OS X which allows many PowerPC applications to run on certain Intel-based Macintosh computers without modification. Apple released Rosetta in 2006 when it transitioned the Macintosh platform from the PowerPC to Intel processor microarchitecture. The name "Rosetta" is a reference to the Rosetta Stone, the discovery of which made it possible to comprehend and translate Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Rosetta is based on QuickTransit technology.[1] It has no graphical user interface, which led Apple to describe Rosetta as "the most amazing software you'll never see."[2]
Rosetta was initially included with Mac OS X v10.4.4 "Tiger", the version that was released with the first Intel-based Macintosh models.[3]
Mac OS X v10.6 "Snow Leopard" does not include Rosetta by default but retains an option in the installer for the user to include it. It can also be automatically installed by the system if needed at a later time.
Mac OS X v10.7 "Lion" neither includes nor supports Rosetta at all. Therefore, with Lion, the current Macintosh platform drops support for PowerPC applications.
    " WIKIPEDIA.
The discs  wich came with a scan are mainlly PowerPC.
Epson no more do Scan software, driver yes to be used by Image Capture or other.
They are all the same, want to sell hardware not software.
For me, To stay at a reasonable file size limit, I do clear choice between what will be B&W and color.
In Image Capture : the Black and White can be treated directly in PDF, using:
    - Image correction :
         - Contrast to full
         - Brightness one step
With color I have quite no choice, JPEG:
    - Image correction
         - Brightness +3
After in a viewer I do a color autolevel.
If I want it in PDF, save in PDF and finally apply a "in house" Filter from ColorSync Utility.
I don't use the built in "reduce file size", it's too extrem and the results are very poor.

  • How to get the file name from downloads folder with the applescript??

    Hi All..
I am downloading an application to downloads folder, I need to install the same application after downloading programatically.
So how do I get the filename in runtime while downloading or after downloading from downloads folder with Applescript or Java?
Also my download URL link doesnot contain full name of the download file.
    Pls suggest.

    Hi,
The best method is to use curl.
Other methods are not reliable, but can work, it depends on several factors (what the script does, what the user does).
Here is an example with the curl command:
    set tUrl to "http://sourceforge.net/projects/vlc/files/2.0.4/macosx/vlc-2.0.4.dmg/download?ac cel_key=60%3A1350656196%3Ahttp%253A//www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html%3 A7233e4e9%245818d66f39b0576e1e9c4a0f3b46b1991180bfdd&click_id=976a88ee-19f7-11e2 -9a21-0200ac1d1d8e&source=accel"
set dFolder to path to downloads folder
tell application "Finder" to set newFolder to (make new folder at dFolder) as string
set f to quoted form of POSIX path of newFolder
    do shell script "cd " & f & " && curl -L " & tUrl & " -o 'vlc.dmg'" -- download  to file "vlc.dmg"
set downloadedFile to newFolder & "vlc.dmg" --<-- HFS path
    --do something with the downloadedFile

  • Epson 1640xl does't work with image capture.

I have an epson 1640XL scanner. I know the epson scan utiliy doesn't work with Snow Leopard. I have been instructed to use Image Capture.
I see the scanner on the left, and when it "overview" scan's the image the scanner makes noise but doesn't produce anything on the screen.
Any thoughts on how to get it working?
    seth

I had all the problems stated above, while trying to scan with Image Capture. I got nothing but the "the scan operation is cancelled", after multiple tries. I called Epson. They said there was no driver that would work with OS X 10.8.4 for this scanner, and suggested that I call Apple. Apple said there was nothing they could do, and that I should call Epson. I followed the advise someone gave above, and downloaded EPSON Scan 3.8.0. The Epson software didn't work. It didn't seem to be able to pick up the 1640 XL. But, suddenly, I could preview with Image Capture. It was progress, but wouldn't work past the Overview step. The Scan button was "greyed out", not allowing me to proceed. I then tried importing through Photoshop. It works! Go to File/Import/Images from Device and you will get beautiful scans. Good luck, everyone.

  • Scan with Image Capture freezes OS

Since I updated to Mavericks the system freezes when I scan in Image Capture.
This occurs with two different scanners, a Epson Perfection V30 and a Lexmark X364dw.
When I start the scan in Image Capture it seems to work. Then Image Capture shows the message "Saving picture [name of the picture], page 1" and freezes the whole Computer. Only the mouse pointer can be moved.
I only can do a force shut down by pressing the on-button for 6 seconds.
This occurs since I changed to Mavericks. With OS X 10.7 and 10.8 I never had any problem.
My Computer is a MacBook Pro 5,1 (late 2008) with 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD, all drivers and software is up to date, the scanner drivers for the Epson and the Lexmark devices are up to date (came on software update). The freeze occurs randomly and happens with the scanner connected via USB cable and also via WLAN.
Of course I tried all things crossed my mind, like repairing permissions, deleting preferences of Image Capture, reset PRAM, but this didn't solve the problem.
The HDD has 425 GB of free space. The files I tried to capture with Image Capture are text documents I wanted to scan with 600 dpi b/w into a PDF file.
Now I'm out of any idea what else I can do and hope to get an advice or a hint here.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

This issue is very recent, and problably linked to 10.9.2. I scan a lot of documents, and I would have noticed a computer freeze with 10.9.1
I will try with another user, but I need more time for that.
    Thanks
