Can't close document in pages

Im on a OSX lion 10.7.3 and use Pages. But since a week or so one of the documents i opned crashed and then it reopens everytime i force quit the program and restarts and it  again. Sometimes I can write a little in it but i cant close it or mark any text with the mouse.
I have tried to diable "re open" documents in system settings, but that does not help at all.
as it is now i cant use pages and are stuck with my work for two weeks.
any help

It would seem the document is corrupt. Your best option would be to copy the content & paste it into a new Pages document & save that. The trash the original.
I had a Numbers document do much the same thing yesterday. I was trying to duplicate the file, modify it & then save it for a new project. It just would not save. I selected the content & pasted it into a new Numbers document & was able to save without problems.

    JM,
Command-Click the filename at the top of the Pages window. In the list that pops up, click on the second item, the parent folder of the document. A finder window will open. Control-click the highlighted file and select "Move To Trash". Close the document.

  • I can't save documents in Pages.

I can't save documents in Pages. I get a "file does not exist" error message. I've tried changing the file name, length, and location. To no avail. This is only sporadic.

    Hey fruhulda,
I have a similar problem although I'm running OSX 10.9.5.  I'v just started to completely remove pages and attempt a reinstall.  I did the search for the plist file.  There was only one file with the com.apple.iwork.pages name but it did not have the .plist extension, even when I checked the info page.  Is this the same file?
I'm not sure I want to update to Yosemite yet, but it looks like I may have to in order to continue to work with my pages documents, unless the reinstall works.

  • Can't open documents in pages

Hi. I have an ipad 2 and purchased "pages" to use on it. Something seems to have gone wrong with it. I had to delete it and when I reinstall I get all the folder I had created. I can open the folders but I can not open the documents inside the folder. The document seem grey and they have a bar running across he bottom of the document. I can see all the documents in the cloud store but can't get them onto th ipad. Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong. Thanks. DMJ

Does that error message say any more than "The document xxx can't be opened"? Do any Pages documents open or is it all of your previously created Pages documents? Have you tried opening a .txt (text) or RTF document with Pages?
With most programs, suddenly not functioning as it should is often a problem of corrupt preferences. Have you tried opening these Pages documents in another user account? If that works, the problem almost certainly is corrupt preferences in your user account. Go to HD > Users > [your account] > Library > Preferences & delete the com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist, empty the Trash & then restart Pages.

  • Can't close documents in Preview or TextEdit

I have a simple problem which I just cannot find any discussion of how to fix.  In both TextEdit and Preview (classic culprits on Lion), I have documents I can't close.
When I click the close button it waits for a few seconds then does nothing.  Same for menu commands.  If I quit and reopen, the app opens with those windows.  If I restart, the app still has those windows.  If I "Duplicate" a file, not only can I then not close that file either, but I also can't "Save" the file (to give it it's own name).
I have several document open now in Preview which are basically permanent fixtures of the app.
I imagine the version store is corrupt.  Can I delete it?  where is it?

Is it save to hunt down the versions of those files and delete those?  Or is there only one, huge versions file for the whole drive?
It is a critical operation - I would only attempt it if you do not know your System well. I suspect one of the Frameworks in /Library/Frameworks might be corrupt, that can happen, if you install some app that installs its own Frameworks, and accidentally installs an incompatible version. So what you would have to do is to compare the backup of the /Library/Frameworks folder with your current Frameworks and try to spot a difference and then to restore that different file. You need to quit all Applications while you do that, and still you would risk to cut the branch  that you are sitting on - this operation is best be done from a second machine, so as not to change the system while it is running. It would be safer to reinstall Lion by booting into the recovery HD.
Before you take any drastic measures, perhaps another test: Do you have a second account on your system? Then it would be a good idea to check if "Preview" and "Textedit" show the same buggy behaviour when started from another account. If they work fine, then the problem must be caused by something in your user library and not in the system library.
Also you could try to boot into "Safe Mode". This will turn off start up items and third party extensions, that may cause problems.
If the problem occurs in all these tests, then I would opt for a reinstall.

  • Can't open document in pages.

I can't open one of my documents in pages on my iPad. I've reinstalled pages, rebooted the iPad and simply turned it off and on but nothing is solves my problem. Any ideas? Really need this document!

If you use iCloud, download the document from iCloud.com and try to open the document on your computer. If you can open it, save it under a different name and send it back to iCloud by dragging the document into the browser window. Launch. Pages on the iPad and see if the renamed document will open OK. If it does, delete the old document.

  • MacBook Pro OSX 10.9.4 - can't open document in pages - message says need updated version and there aren't any

MacBook Pro - OSX 10.9.4 - trying to open document in pages.  Message says can't open with this version - go to app store for update, but there aren't any updates.

Hope apple can fix this soon if new patch 10.9.4 cause this.
Apple cannot fix problems they did not create. Eset and Avast are capable of doing nothing beneficial and can only cause problems. Uninstall it and determine if the problems subside.
Use Avast's uninstaller, which will remove it completely. Eset requires using the uninstaller included with its downloaded installation program (see screenshot):
Eset will also require manual techniques to uninstall components its uninstaller leaves behind, a common characteristic of poorly written software.
I am now can access an internet, with zero security.
It's a common misconception that you have "zero security" without junk such as Eset or Avast. OS X already includes robust protections against viruses and malware. Use your Mac the way it was intended to be used - without burdening it with useless garbage.

  • Can't email document from pages

I cannot email any document from pages . Kept getting message that says" can't send or save message", even though i get the swoosh message sent sound.  This has never happened before.

I just tried it on my iPad and it went through.
    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.

  • Can't read document in pages

My documents in Pages are invisible, or perhaps just turned into negatives, because I can see an negative-type image of a photo I embedded in a resume document but can not see any text. How can I see the old document? I recently installed Snow Leopard on my 3-year-old MacBook and this is the first time since that installation that I have tried opening my Pages files.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Since you're using Pages 3, the correct place to post would be the Pages ‘08 forum.
That being said, I think the solution is the one I & others have written several times in the Pages '08 & '09 forums.
First, use the Mac OS 10.6.3 combo updater. This fixes a problem with the Hoefler Text font that is not fixed using the delta update (10.6.1 > 10.6.2).
Second, make sure your iWork applications are updated. For iWork '08 that is Pages 3.0.3 & Numbers 1.0.3. For iWork '09 it's Pages 4.0.3 & Numbers 2.0.3. If you're not running the latest versions & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. They must be in the iWork '08 or iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '08 or iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '08 or '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

  • I can't close / delete a pages document. Can you help?

Every time I open pages a perticular document appears. I cannot close or delete it. Even if I force quit it. It reapears next time. Cannot access tool bar when it's open. Please help.

    Menu > View > Show Layout/Invisibles
Now go command a (Select All)
    What do you see?
Do you see any boxes around your objects with light crosses on the corners? They are locked.
click on them > Menu > Arrange > Unlock
The other possibility is you have moved the objects to the Section Master:
Menu > Arrange > Section Master > Make Master Objects Selectable
Or if you click on the text area and then see small white boxes on the corners and a group of objects moves together
    Menu > Arrange > Ungroup
You have shown me only the poster, out of context and without any of the surrounding format options, so it is hard to tell anything about it. Even whether you are in Pages. It could even be a pdf file.

  • Can't open document is pages

I cant seem to open any documnets in pages or create new documents.  I dont understand why it used to work fine.  When I open a documnet pages jumps in the bar and then nothing happens.  The toolbars open but that is it.
    Tom

Sounds like some of those may be Pages '08 files.
You need to open and resave those from Pages '09.

  • Can not create documents in Pages 09

I down loaded the 30 day trial version to check and see if I wanted to use it for a newsletter. Only...
During the install process, Pages hung during the AUP splash screen (per "force quit applications)
The second time it opened just fine, except.
When I go to create a new document from a template I get a splash screen that states "the document could not be opened"
I get the same error if I try to open a Word document, a flat text document, etc.
I've trashed the iWork files in Library/Application support and reinstalled iWork to no effect
Numbers and Keynote appear to work fine
    Puzzled
    Ralph

iWork '09 is made of two sets of files:
    <startupVolumes>:Applications:iWork '09:
    <startupVolumes>:Library:Application Support:iWork '09:
The first one contain the program with the embedded 'inthebox' templates
The second one contain several resources including shared Frameworks.
So, before re-installing, it would be useful to trash both of them.
As iWork uses an Apple's installer, it may be useful to repair permissions with Disk Utilities when the install process is finished.
And of course, one more time I urge users to check if problems are related to third party components which may fool the beasts.

  • Merge documents in Pages?

How can I merge documents in Pages 6. Actually, I have the same document, but with commentaries and alterations from differents authors, in differents files. I would like to merge all the commentaries and alterations into a new final file. Thanks.

Pages 6 doesn't exist so I presume you have Pages 5.0. Where the comments and alterations created in Pages 5? I think it would be easier if you used PAges 4.3 instead of Pages 5 as the latter is stripped of too many features that exist in Pages 4.3.
