Can't Close Finder Window Over Document

I was in a document, using the Help menu, thought I selected a Help topic (may have slipped and hit a different key?), and suddenly a Finder window sheet came out of the document as if I needed to Save As or select something on my hard drive. Problem is, the Cancel button and its partner (whatever it is ... Save?) dropped below my screen, so I can't close the Finder window to get back to my document. Nor can I Quit Pages (without Force Quitting and losing data) or close the document. I am stuck. Is there a way out?

Sorry, I thought from the expressions you used, you were less experienced.
Yes it is really not very Maclike to use the Escape key, we always used (cmd .) but OSX is much closer to the darkside now in an attempt to be more familiar to switchers. I have to consciously use it now as it is needed to get out of the many circumstances now where there is no visible navigation left on the screen.
IMHO to not have some way out of situations like this, harks back to the worst of DOS practices.

  • I can't close one window in Safari.

I can't close one window in Safari. I'm on an iMac 27", OSX 10.9.4 and using Safari Version 7.0.5. I have several windows open - one with the header in grey (as they appear when not selected) and am able to individually close the other windows. The problem window has several tabs. I cannot close that window. If I try to select it, the top bar remains grey. I've quit and restarted, run disc utilities, run permissions and no problems show. At a loss how to handle this. I do not have this problem with Firefox.

From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

  • Can't close Safari windows

I can close tabs, but when I get to the final tab, I cannot close the window. Neither can I close any window with multiple tabs open, either by pressing the red close button or with CMD-W. I can minimize the window, however. I've tried resetting Safari and deleting prefs, all to no avail. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

HI Saul and welcome to Apple Discussions...
First, try restarting your Mac. If that doesn't help...
Your profile indicates you are running 10.4.11 with Safari 3.0.4
Tiger 10.4.11 minimum requirements for Safari is Safari 4 with the 2009-002 Security Update installed. Click Safari/About Safari to make sure which version of Safari you are runnig.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*

  • Script to close finder windows

    Hi,
I have a network volume that mounts automatically (I drug it into login items). Someone gave me this script to close it, which I also have put into login items. Works great.
    tell application "Finder"
    close Finder window 1
    end tell
What I need to do is modify it to close 2 windows, as I am adding a new network disk to login items. Can someone help me understand what needs to be changed or added to accomplish this? I'd like to know what the process is to edit it so that when I add more disks in the coming months I can make the changes to have all those windows close by themselves.
    Thanks,
    Sean

Hi, thanks for your quick responses.
close Finder window "TheNameAtTheTopOfTheWindow" sounds like it might be the best way to go since it's so specific.
As for the close every window command, is that the actual syntax? (I don't even know if that's the right word, lol)
Also, I just had a thought, in case there is a delay in the mounting of the disk (maybe it's spinning up or something) and the script runs before the window opens, is there a kind of "wait" command I can put before the tell finder commands that will force it wot wait for maybe 10 seconds?
    Thanks again,
    Sean

do you own the Apple ID to which the device is locked in Find my iPhone?  If you do not own it, you cannot unlock it without knowing the former owner's Apple ID and password or having him remove the iPhone from his account.

  • Can't open Finder windows or Preferences

I can't open Finder windows or Finder Preferences.
When I click on the Finder icon in the dock, use File>New Finder Window, the Go menu, or Finder>Preferences, nothing happens. I even tried opening a folder from Spotlight and "Open in Finder" from a stack but still nothing. I ran a cleaner (Cocktail) but no change. It's like having a virus. (Safari Autocomplete and Facebook login also stopped working about a day before I noticed this).
The only thing problematic that has happened recently was while I was on familyguyx.net, the page loaded without any trigger to one of those pop-ups that repeatedly appears until you reset your browser. Since then I haven't been on that site but these other issues have started.
    Any help is really appreciated!

Do you possibly have the Applescript menu or even some text processor in your dock?
If you have the Script menu, open the script editor from that menu and type this into the untitled window:
    tell application "Onyx"
    activate
    end tell
    Then run it.
If you don't, open a text editor-if you can-and type the same thing into it. Select all of the text and look for Services>Script Editor>Run As Applescript. That should run the above script and open Onyx. Services is under the Application Name menu.
If those don't work, let me know what you have in your dock, and maybe I can figure out another way.

  • Can't Close/Minimize Windows

Frequently (but not always) I can't close or minimize windows. If I drag the window slightly (in any direction), suddenly the close/minimize buttons become responsive. The problem happens in all Apps. Any thoughts on what this could be? (Running Mavericks 10.9.3 on a MacBook Air 13'')

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • How can I close all windows in Preview?

    Hi all
I can't seem to find a way to close all windows in Preview.
Can somebody try this and see if they get the same result I do.
    1. Copy an image into the clipboard.
    2. Open Preview
    3. Hold down command-N for about 20 seconds.
You should end up with dozens of windows with the image that you copied.
    Now, try to close them.
I've unchecked 'Restore windows when quitting and re-openng apps' in System Preferences
I've typed in the 'defaults write com.apple.Preview NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows' hack in the terminal window
I've quit Preview with the 'option' button held down and 'Quit and Close All Windows' showing in the menu.
No matter what I do, the windows keep coming back every time I start Preview.
This 'force restore' feature of Lion is starting to get really annoying.

If I hold down the option key and go to Preview->File the Close Window menu item changes to Close all
I answered the OP's question but I see now that the question wasn't what he was really asking.

  • Volume eject from sidebar closes finder window

after successfully upgrading 2 machines (12" pb 1.5 GHz, mac mini Core Duo 2.33 GHz) to Leopard everything works beautifully except that finder windows close when I attempt to eject a volume (CD, DVD, memory sticks, server volumes). I usually have 2 windows in column view open and only the active window closes, yet the volume unmounts successfully. This happens in any other view (list, icon) as well.
Both computers were upgraded from the latest Tiger version and don't have any extensions or pref panes installed. The problem still occurs after a "safe boot".
    any help or ideas appreciated

I was a bit startled by this behavior as well. As near as I can determine, if the object the be ejected is selected in the sidebar then ejecting it closes that window. If something else is selected you can actually click the little eject button next to the thing to be ejected, it does eject, and the window stays open. I suppose this is logical: after all if something is selected in the sidebar, then Finder is displaying the window for the thing selected, and if that thing goes bye-bye then so should its window. The old behavior was actually illogical but we were used to it.

  • Can't open finder window

I know there have been previous posts like this, but I've tried the advice given to no effect so far. Basically, my finder window won't open--it flashes up briefly (less than a second) and then vanishes. I can open a window from the HD icon, but it won't let me double click on either the home icon or the documents folder--in both cases I get the flash/disappear thing again. I can open files from inside applications, but can't access anything through finder. I have created a new user and the problem does not happen when I'm logged in as the new person. Also, unlike some of the other people who have had this problem, I do see the icons in the left-hand column of the HD window, and the icons for applications, movies, pictures, etc. work fine. And I can even see the icons for home and documents--I just can't access them.
Here is what I've tried so far:
    1) have deleted finder plists as per instructions in earlier posts (using terminal, since finder isn't working)
    2) have installed 10.4.10 combo updater
Any other thoughts? Thanks in advance.

How about Folder Actions? Folder Actions can be assigned to opening a folder, which is where you see the problem. Perhaps something is broken there. Try right-clicking a folder and selecting Disable Folder Actions from the contextual menu. Does that have any impact on your ability to open folders?
If that actually works, the preference list for Folder Actions is
    com.apple.FolderActions.plist
Deleting it will probably remove any Folder Actions you actually use.

  • How to auto close finder window after drag and drop?

In Tiger, I would file away items on my desktop my dragging them to the hard drive and then digging down to the appropriate folder. The finder window would then close automatically after dropping the file. Is there a setting in Snow Leopard that will enable similar functionality? Whenever I complete a drag and drop now the finder window just stays open, which isn't a huge issue, but I'd still like to change it. Thanks!

  • How can I close one window without closing all open windows?

If I open more than one window, I can't close just one. When I try to close just one, I'm warned that I'm about to close more than one (all of them) but I'm not told how to close just one.

Are you sure you aren't getting tabs confused for windows? If you close a window containing multiple tabs, Firefox should give you a warning that you are about to close several tabs. To close a tab do one of the following:
    * click the x at the right end of the tab (when you only have a few tabs open)
    * open the tab you want to close, then click the x that appears
    * right click the tab and select 'Close Tab'
    * open the tab you want to close and press Ctrl+W
You can close a window using Ctrl+Shift+W.

  • How can I close 'current' window and not all windows?

How can I close the current window (only) and not all or none?
This function works well with MS Explorer.
Not a problem, just a desired function.

    Hi JLCluster,
If you just click the small x in the tab you are currently viewing, it will close only that tab. I think you are clicking the x in upper right hand corner of the screen which closes all open tabs as you described.
    Hopefully this helps!
