CAN'T CLOSE MAIL

I can't close Mail and I can't shut down my MacAir
el.jeffe

Aside from force quitting as suggested earlier, this solved it for me. (I have no idea why it works)
From the Apple menu bar, select "Mail" then "Preferences"
Select "Accounts"
You should see each of your email accounts that you use Mail for listed individually and will need to take the remaining steps for each one listed.
Select your email account in the left window, and notice the last item on the screen in the right window is the TLS Certificate
Click on the selector next to "TLS Certificate:"
Choose the "com.apple.idms.appleid.prd.xxxx" listing instead of "None"
Quit Mail
After doing the above, the next time I had Mail open and selected "Shut Down..." while it was opened, it shut down without the shutdown being cancelled by Mail. As this has worked now three days in a row, I'm calling it solved.
I hope if works for you as well

  • Can't close mail, not even force quit....

I tried sending a mass email through the Mail application. It came back cannot send the message using the server smtp.aol.com then my email address. There's a drop down of the hundreds of emails I sent in BCC and I can't reach the bottom of the drop down. Nor can I close out the email. Even if I do a force quit of mail, and then come back to mail, this email returns. Any thoughts? Anyone ever have this issue?

If you got a message that says you can't send it through the AOL server, then it never got sent; it was either bounced back to you, or the server refused it after getting the To: and BCC information.
If the email is in your Inbox, you can open ~/Library/Mail/Your AOL Account Name/INBOX.mbox/Messages and delete the most recent message, then restart Mail and the problem should be resolved. If it was never sent anyway, it would be in that same path, except in the Drafts.mbox/Messages and you can still delete the most recent one from there.
To avoid this problem, don't send hundreds of emails at once unless you know your email provider actually allows this. Send the support people an email and ask them, or call them if you have a phone number.

  • Accidentally created an On My Mac mailbox  Now the mail dialogue box is open and frozen, with a soft pinging sound when I try to close...Can't restart computer until I close Mail, but can't close Mail.

This is my first day with my Mac and my hunch is there's a simple fix for this.

    Try force closing and rebooting.

I can't shut down my computer because it says mail is open.  It says to close mail and continue shut down.  Problem is I can't open or close mail now.  Can't shut down my computer at all.  What can I do?

If you cannot get mail to quit/force quit, you can always remove power from your Mac.
NOTE: removing power is a bad idea, and can result in data loss, but sometimes it is the only thing left to do.
Press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds, and the Mac will power off.
When you power back on, the Mac should reboot.

  • HT5361 I am having trouble with closing the mail app so that I can shut off my laptop. the menu bar under file doesn't give me the option to quit.  that option is lister, but it is faded.  command Q will not close mail either.

I am unable to shut off my laptop because I can not close the mail app.  Command Q doesn't work. While "quit mail" shows up under FILE on the menu bar, it is faded and not a working option.  Mail appears to be frozen.  I also can not pull up the mail page despite the app being open. Clicking on the mail icon does nothing and there are no available options under the menu bar.  Help, please!  Thanks!

    Try force-quitting (command-option-esc).

My problem is after updating to Yosemite does my mail client any longer. I can not even open the mail, and when I "forced closes" mail and try to open it again to go in the entered settings running the colored wheels around and allows me only to forcing close again? does anyone have a solution to the above problem?

You mean the default OS X mail app? Try reinstalling OS X Yosemite if that's the case.
If you are referring to 3rd party mail applications, that's a compatibility issue. Some apps don't work in the new operating system. You have to wait until the developer updates the app, or you have to revert back to Mavericks to continue using it.

  • Mail says it can't contact the mail server of my ISP. If I do a restart I'm told I have to close mail myself. When I start mail I get a message that it can't contact my ISP's server. What should I do?

I clicked on my mail icon and got the installation wizard screen. I went through with the installation, despite being worned that the certificate for a strange server "plesk" had expired. I got my mailboxes back and the ability to read my messages, but now if I try a restart I get a message that Mail can't connect my ISP' mail server and that I have to close Mail manually. I find I can "ping" the server with the utility. I have had a screen warning that my privacy might be invaded. What should I do?

    Hi johns22!
I have an article for you that can help you troubleshoot this issue with your mail accounts a little further. This article will walk you through a couple steps and help you determine the source of the issue, and can be found right here:

  • How can you close an email after reading without either deleting it or saving it somewhere?  I use AOL and it just goes to "old mail" after you have read the email.

How can you close an email in Apple iPad after reading it without deleting it.  I use AOL and in their application it just goes to "old mail" after you have read it.  In Apple's email it stays open. Very annoying.

You cannot actually close an email in the mail app on the iPad. You can tap on the drafts folder or any empty folder that you migh have when you are done reading the email and then the blank white window will appear in the mail app.
The mail app will always show emails otherwise. That is just the way that it works currently on the iPad.

  • Mail will not close how do I close mail so I can shutdown my iMac?

i just bought my first 27 inch imac a few weeks ago, I am a apple convert, today my mail will not close, the close mail tab is greyed out in to top task bar, and I tried to right click on the app and close that way but no go. is there yet a third way to shut down mail that I am not aware of as I can not turn off the imac until mail is closed, miss the force shutdown tab in pcs

Use cheng5543's suggestion first. You can also Force Quit applications by clicking the Apple symbol in the upper left of the screen and choosing Force Quit and then choose the app to Force Quit.

    Mailbox menu>Get New Mail:

  • Can't close new mail messages

If I create a new mail message and then decide I want to close it, Mail won’t let me do that. I click on the red circle in the top left corner, nothing. I type cmd/W, nothing. I select File/Close from the menu, nothing. Only way I can get rid of it is to quit Mail, and half the time I have to force quit by this point to get the app to actually close. So far, everything else in Mail seems to be working fine with Snow Leopard.
    Anyone else seeing this?

Ok, some more feedback. Just tried doing another reinstall of Snow Leopard. Figured maybe that would do the trick. No dice, still getting this goofy Mail behavior.
Upgraded my wife’s laptop, no Mail problems at all.
This is driving me nuts. Not being able to save a mail to the Drafts folder is a real problem, and not being able to close a new message after opening it is a major hassle.
FYI, I can open a received email and then close it, no problem. Just can’t close emails I've created to send. Sure hoping this is resolvable and that I'm not just having to live with this until 10.7.

  • How can I stop mail on iPad from going to next message when deleting an email?

How can I stop the mail app from moving to the next message when deleting an email?
I like to keep messages as new until I can take action on them, but this just makes an unnecessary step.  I do not have this problem on my iPhone, but I am still running 5.0.1 on the phone and have the new iPad 5.1 software.

    Hi furiousbalancing,
With regards to deleting messages in Mail, you may find the following portion of the following article helpful:
To prevent the next message from being automatically selected (and marked as read), hold down the Option key when you delete a message.
    Mail (Mavericks): Delete messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14900
You can also use Command-Shift-U to toggle a message between Read and Unread (command should be the same in Mavericks):
    Mail (Mountain Lion): Keyboard shortcuts
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11679
You can also close the Preview portion of the Mail window, which should then require you to double-click on a message to open it and have it show as read (it appears the double click on the seperator may no longer work in Mavericks, but you should still be able to drag it to make it disappear):

Google them to confirm the settings that you need for the outgoing server, then check the setting you entered on the pad.  Pay real close attention to the outgoing server name, and port.  You may need to change in on the pad.

  • HT1338 What's going on with iCloud (MobileMe)?  I'm able to sign in here, but I can't access mail on my Macbook Pro, iPhone, or work computer.  I always get an authorization error (user-id or passwork wrong).  This has been going on for almost a week now.

The single download means that you won't be able to redownload it from the store without paying, either on a computer's iTunes or an iOS device - it doesn't stop you from copying the audiobook to your other computers or syncing it to your iOS devices, you just can't redownload it. (I believe that they are all supplied to Apple by audible.com, so I assume that it's them requiring the one-time download.)
You can download audiobooks on your computer's iTunes and sync them to iOS devices, you do not have to buy them directly on the device (if you do then you can copy them back to your computer's iTunes library by connecting the device and using the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases menu option on your computer's iTunes).
What you are doing to sync them should work i.e.
    - connecting the iPad to your Mac
    - selecting the iPad on your Mac's iTunes
    - selecting its Books tab and selecting the audiobooks that you want to sync to the iPad and syncing/applying that selection.
You should then get an audiobooks option in the Music app on your iPad. If they aren't appearing there  then do they show in Settings > General > Usage > Music on the device - if you have audiobooks on the iPad then they should be listed there under an 'audiobooks' heading.
By 'restart the iPad' do you mean a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
You could also try closing its Music app via the iPad's taskbar : Force an app to close in iOS.
And do a soft-reset and retry syncing.
I assume that music and other items sync ok ?
