Can't complete initial setup - Open Directory problems

"Easy to set up, easy to run" my big ***. On initial bootup, the automatic setup failed. "There may be a problem with the Open Directory." A few days later, it was suddenly working. So I set up and enjoyed one, count em, one user account. Then it stopped working again. I can't set up a Group. I can't use Workgroup Manager successfully, either. The whole server has been one big mess of fail.
Is this a common problem? Is there a fix? A workaround? Do I need to take this thing back??

Check this site out for starters

It's not just for schools, and it offers a lot of info on setting up OS X server.
It is possible that there is some hardware problem, but it's more likely that you need to setup the server correctly. If you're not familiar with OS X Server, it's not necessarily easy.

  • 10.7.2: still can't replicate 10.6 Open Directory or restore from backup

I am trying to migrate my Open Directory (OD) database from an Xserve running 10.6.8 to an iMac running 10.7.2 now. As before the update to 10.7.2, I am unable to make the Lion server an OD replica of the OD database running on Snow Leopard.
This is what I do (please let me know, if anyting I do is wrong):
On the Snow Leopard Server (SLS) in the Server Admin utility, I go to the Open Directory service, the "Archive" subsection, choose a target directory for "Archive In", and click on the Archive button. I am then asked to name my archived database and provide a password. Let's say, it is "OD Archive," the file generated will be "OD Archive.sparseimage".
I copy this Sparseimage to the deskop of my Leopard Server (LS).
I then open the same place in the Server Admin utility on the LS. In the "Restore from" section I browse to the LS desktop and "Choose" the saved Sparseimage. I click on "Restore," at which point I am asked for the password of the archived OD database. When I supply it, it appears that my OD archive is being imported.
However, going into the Workgroup Manager on the LS, and logging in as diradmin, into /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1, shows no users from my SLS having been migrated. Why has this still not been fixed?
Likewise, when I try to make the LS an Open Directory replica of the SLS, I again, even after this updated informed that my OD database admin credentials are incorrect, when they are not. I had surely expeced a fix for this by the time we reached 10.7.2.

Historically you have not been able to mix versions between an Open Directory Master and Replica, that is both would either have to be Snow Leopard, or both would have to be Lion.
I have not tried upgrading to Lion this way (I am currently leaving my servers on Snow Leopard) but I can suggest the following based on experiences with Snow Leopard Servers.
As you already appear to have done, in Snow Leopard Server make an Archive of your Open Directory setup
Make sure you also have a backup of the entire Snow Leopard Server so you can go back to it if you can't successfully move to Lion
Setup the hostname, IP address and DNS records (which might mean setting up a DNS server) for the new Lion Server
Check this using the command line
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
Make the new Lion Server in to a new empty Open Directory Master
Test this new Open Directory Master by creating a test user and then deleting afterwards
Now move on to the restoring of the Open Directory Archive, when I did this last time, I found that I was given two choices, either to completely replace the Open Directory with the one from the Archive, or to merge the two together. I found that trying to replace failed and resulted in an empty Open Directory like you report, I found that chosing merge did work successfully
If the above still does not work, then you might have to consider the following alternative approach.
On the Snow Leopard Server in Workgroup Manager export all the user accounts except the Admin and DirAdmin accounts
    Optionally export all the Groups
Optionally export all the Computer Groups
    Setup the new Lion Server
Create a new empty Open Directory
Import the files exported from Workgroup Manager
This will not keep the original passwords. You will have to set a password for each account.

  • Open Directory Problem

I can't seem to start open directory services. Using the Server Admin the light is clear indicating that open directory services is not running. The General Settings display the following:
    Open Directory is: Standalone Server
    Lookup Server is: Running
    Netinfo Server is: Local only
    LDAP Server is: Stopped
    Pasword Server is: Stopped
    Kerberos is: Stopped
When I attempt to access most of the logs I get a system error message "A Service has encountered an eroor. Try to refresh the view (mydomain.com/Open Directory). Report the problem to the admininstrator (me) if it persists. (File not found, the service may not have loggging enabled)
If I refresh I get the same error message again. I can't find an settings that enable or disable logging in the Open Directory tab of Server Admin.
I am having troubles with my mail server too, I can log into IMAP with my Mail Cllent no problem but attempting to log into SMTP fails.

    Michael:
From your post, it looks like your machine is configured as a Standalone server, which means that OD isn't supposed to be running. Did you promote to an OD Master? If not, and you plan on giving it a try, search around on the web and these forums first for guides, particularly related to the importance of correct DNS.

  • Initial setup and Open Directory problem

    Hi,
I'm new to the MAC OS X server system and trying to get one up and running on a G5.
Unfortunately I can’t get the configuration up and running, and I have the feeling it already goes wrong during the initial setup. I was hoping you guys could help me out.
The purpose of the server is providing network user accounts (DNS + Open Dir.) and providing sharepoints.
I go trough following steps while installing from scratch:
    - Install MAC OS X and run the Server install package from the OS X Server DVD (as you know, OSX Server is'n installing directly on G5)
    - Choose keyboard layout, enter license and create an account "admin"
    - Define static IP "192.168.1.1", add this IP as the first in the list of DNS Servers, add "company.local" in the search domain
    - Install as a standalone server (so I can configure dns & other network services after basic setup)
    - Check "network time server" (so time will be synced for Kerberos)
    - Proceed, install and reboot
OSX Server seems to be installed fine and I can login with "admin". Next step I take is configuring DNS.
    - create a zone "companyname.local.", use my IP as server address (192.168.1.1) and use "server" as the server name.
    - add a machine record for DNS-testing (called "gateway", with the IP of "192.168.1.254")
Start the DNS service and reboot
    - perform an nslookup with a second MAC with 192.168.1.1 as the nameserver and verify that DNS is resolving correctly.
DNS seems to be working fine, now I would like to get the Open Directory service to work:
    - change "Standalone" to "Open directory master" in the server configuration panel
    - provide a password for the directory admin
    - use "SERVER.COMPANYNAME.LOCAL" as kerberos realm, and "dc=server,dc=companyname,dc=local" as the search base
    - Save & start the service and perform a reboot to be sure all the new settings are in use
Unfortunately after this install open directory doesn't seem to work fine and also Kerberos doesn't start.
Concerning Kerberos: I get following output in the "Slapconfig log" Open Directory log file:
    Starting LDAP server (slapd)
    command: /usr/bin/ldapadd -c -x -D uid=root,cn=users,dc=maggie,dc=interesourcegroup,dc=local -w **
    Hostname server.companyname.local is from Rendezvous
    Skipping Kerberos configuration
Sorry to bother you with the entire walkthrough of the installation, but I have the feeling that I'm missing something while performing the basic install or DNS setup .. ?
    Regards,
    Seppe
    G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6) /

We currently have a static IP and a public dns hosted
by MediaTemple, so I think I can create a subdomain
on MediaTemple and link it to our fixed IP address
("private.companyname.com" >> static ip) instead of
    using dydns.. ?
    Of course.
I suppose I can then use "private.companyname.com" as
the zone name on my G5 server and use
    "server.private.companyname.com" for my local DNS?
    Sounds reasonable.
If using this DNS, what will be the Kerberos REALM
and Search Base? And do I still need to specify
private.companyname.com as the Search Base in the
Network Settings of the clients and server?
Well, REALM and LDAP Search Base can set to whatever you like. On the other hand I've seen tools contacting kerberos servers break when the REALM is not part of the kerberos server fqdn.
So I'd stick with the usual recomandations and set kerberos REALM to your domain name (if there is no other kerberos server alread running and using this).
For the LDAP search domain I'd also follow the road of using domain name space as search base.
When dns will finally be setup properly, these setting will be autopopulated for you in the GUI. So test, test, test you dns with
host $ip and host $fqdn and then go on promoting "Standalone Server" to "Open Directory Master".
    HTH

  • Can't find Initial setup of Functional unit SLD

    Dear all,
when i start Initial setup of Functional unit SLD,the sudden interruption, then i can't find it under the All Configuration Tasks   ,i only can find it under the History of Executed Configuration Tasks   .
    How can i do it?
    Thank you

There is no SLD installed by default in CE.
For this you need install one dedicatd j2ee server that will talk to remote system. After that we can use that in our development

  • Server 3 / SSL Certificate / Open Directory - Problem!

    We've updated from Server 2 to Server 3 / OS X 10.9.
We have an SSL certificate for server from Comodo.
Under Server 2, all worked just fine, with the SSL certificate being used to secure all services (configure via Server app).
Under Server 3, all works just fine, but Open Directory will not accept certificate - so Certificates / Settings in Server 3 app shows "Custom Configuration" for Settings - and on inspecting this it is because Open Directory set to be not secured but everything else is using SSL.
I've tried setting the Open Directory to use the SSL, but when ever I do it simply bounces back to being unsecured.
Does this matter?  Presumably it should be possible (as the standard setting appears to try and set Open Directory to use the SSL certificate), but not sure whether trying to fix is simply a fools errand.
Anyone got any clues as to whether to fix or not, and if to fix, how?
    Thanks in advance.

Have you check to see that the certificate is indeed "Trusted" by your server?
Above, you stated that they're in the etc/certificates folder, but that doesn't mean that the server likes them.  You can create a "Self Signed" Certificate and still have certificates in there.  That doesn't mean that anyone else on the planet has to trust them.
Open Keychain Access in your utilities folder.  Depending on how you have it configured, you may have to look around to find the certificate in question.  It may be under login, or System.
When you select your Certificate, if it's there, does it show as trusted?
Another thing you can check...  Often times Certificate authories, use Intermdeiate certificates.  Since anyone can sell a certificate, in order to have it trusted, you need to have it signed by someone else.  A good example is Godaddy.  They sell both SSL and Code signing certificates of all flavours.  In order to get them to be trusted, the "Intermediate Certificate" needs to also be installed in the keychain.  My Godaddy cert looks to be trusted by Verisign via an intermediate.
    Have a look here...  https://support.comodo.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid =1182
Not sure if it's directly relevant, but there it is.
The point is, I think you need to verify that your certificate is trusted by your server.  OD won't use an untrusted certificate.
--an afterthought--  Anything in the logs?
Open up your server window where you try to select the certificate for OD.  Also, in another window open up the terminal.  In terminal, type:
    tail -f /var/log/system.log
In the server window try to select the certificate and click done.  See what the output in terminal says.

  • How can I setup Open Directory so that name resolution can also be achieved using a LDAPv3 server (Linux host)

I have a Mac OS X Lion machine (macbook) which is used in a network where most machines are running Linux. Hostname resolution for local machines is achieved on the Linux boxes using a LDAP host. How can a similar behavior can be obtained on Lion (I found no /etc/nsswitch.conf).
I started the Directory Utility, chose the LDAPv3 line, add a line with the IP address of the LDAP server and a "base" but this does not seem to work.
The opendirectory log file is not very informative. It just says (XX.XX.XX.XX is the LDAP server IP address):
    2011-10-27 16:42:33.040 CEST - Registered subnode with name '/LDAPv3/XX.XX.XX.XX'
    Thanks for any help.

My advice is to advise everyone of a scheduled down time when it's convinient for you and implement plan B.
Plan A will simply cause you more grief in the long run.

  • Can't login to new open directory users

I have a Mac Mini Server running 10.8.2 Server. I have existing users, most with no home directory and a couple with network home directories.
However, any NEW users I add (in LDAPv3), they aren't able to login. When I create the user, the "access account" option is checked and stays checked after the user is configured & saved, and stays that way when I relauch Workgroup Manager.
However, when I attempt to login to this user from a network comptuer, the "access account" checkbox gets unchecked. I can check it again and save the account, but when I reopen Workgroup Manager, it's unchecked.
    Help???

    Good tip from Francis.
Last night I finaly was able to get things back to semi normal to summarise here are some tips that worked for me.
Things first went wrong when I tried to add a new user in work group manager. After doing this I got some quite strange behaviour.
The server appeared to hang when loggin on with the new user. but ssh to the server was working.  Finally after about 10 minutes I hit the reset button on the server it appeared to go into sleep mode then automagically it logged in the user. Wow did it work .... no,   Bad news other users could no longer ssh to the server... Arrrr.  Cause tracked down to Kerberous reported as no longer running... Clients (my family )  startign to report cant access services like email ... help...
Rather than all the pain of tryig to fix that this is what I did.
    1) Back up OD in Server Admin ( not Server.app) OD dosent show up there dont know why ??
    2) Make sure the DNS is working
nslookup, dig, hostname commands ... all reported correctly  forward and reverse MYSERVER.MYDOMAIN.COM. domain and IP address.  I even re-ordered the DNS name so that the local address 192.168.10.X was reported first  on my local netwrok before the external ip of the server.
    3) Create a completly new OD by deleatign the old one by setting is as a stand alone then re-creating is as a new  master ( use Server Admin tool )
Finally Kerbrous all reported as runnig ... Try again to add a user...
    4) Add new user in Workgroup manager open on server not remotly this didnt work.
    5) set home account with apf://fqd.name/Users/
    6) make sure home account is accessable on network.
    6) set shell
    7) in Server Admin give all permissions to services new user will need. such as ssh login as required.
    8) in Server.app ( not Server Admin or workgroup manager )
check that new user appears.  The local OD must be in the Directory Exployer search path for this to happen
and the server must be binded to this path.
I added both /Ldap3/127.0.0.1  but also importantly /ldap3/MYSERVER.MYDOMAIN.COM
    9) in Server app click on the user then select the Advanced settings. Make sure user has home dir selectd as the correct /Users folder on the server
( this was not set at first and had the value of 99  no idea why ) there are also other important settings here.
    10) Finally restore OD with perevious backup to add back the rest of the users.
Apparantly this actually does a merge not a overwrite.
End state every thign finaly working .....
except the iChat/jabber server for some reasion wont accept authanicate users.... rrrr.
Bonjour works on the local network but well the point of havign a jabber server was for family in countary A to talk to grandparents  and have private secure video phone with country B so would have been nice if that worked
    Good luck
    Hope that helps

  • Can't complete WRT54GS setup using supplied software disk

I had an old WRT54G router that had two of it's inputs die, so I decided to replace it.  I had an unopened from 2007 WRT54GS (bought it as a replacement  for the existing router but never installed it.)
After connecting it a few weeks ago I found that the installation software told me that I didn't have an internet connection, so I really couldn't go any further with it.
Funny thing is, I can go anywhere on the net that that I like, including this forum, with no problem.  So I don't know why the software installation package(Easylink Linksys Advisor) doesn't see a connection to the net.
I've set up the router with a new password (other than Admin) and changed it to WPA2, and then downloaded and installed a firmware update, but the software still stubbornly insists that I don't have a connection to the net.
So should I forget about the software's problem and continue as I am?  Would that be a problem?  Or does someone know of a fix for this...

Well, ok -- yeah, I already did the web-based thing, changed from the default password, and did whatever else I knew about.
But I assumed that the cd-based setup would do more stuff.  And "manual?"  What manual?  All they give you is the stupid cd.  I'll check to see if the manual is on the cd, if not I can probably get one from the web.
    Thanks...

  • Can't complete wireless setup for new router. Printer keeps looking for old router.

I'm not able to connect my printer to my new wireless modem. My printer continues to look for the older wireless modem. I'm using windows 8. In setup, when it gets to the window "change usb to wireless," my printer can't be found.  I printed out the HP Network Configuration Page and it shows that the new network is "discovered." On the Diagnostics Summary, the "Wireless On" and Wireless Working" passes, but "Network Name (SSID) Found" is Fail.
Where in Win8 can I find my router properties? I might can enter the printer WPS PIN there, but can't find it! Thank you for any help!

    @judyw217, Welcome to the forums!
I hope to help you with the connection issues you're having when trying to connect your Deskjet F4580 to your "new network" as you now have a new router. I have a few ideas in mind that you can try to get started!
First try power cycling the network devices. Sometimes all of the devices just need a restart!:
Turn off the printer and computer and unplug the router for 1 minute (do not press any buttons on the router).
Plug the router back in and wait another minute, next turn on the printer and computer.
Now check to see if your SSID is found (your network).
If the network is still not found, try running the Print and Scan Doctor on your computer to see if the tool can detect your printer and add it to the network.
If the printer is still not connecting to your router, check your router settings. If you need assistance checking the router settings, contact your router provider. I will let you know which options you are looking to check:
Network name and password to have no spaces or punctuation.
If using WPA2 security, switch to WPA personal.
Dual broadcast Wireless b/g/n (printer may connect to g).
    Turn Mac Filtering Off.
Firewall settings need to be at there default settings, or set to a lower security.
    Multicasting "on".
Following ports need to be un-blocked:
    Incoming (UDP) ports : 137, 138, 161, 427
    Outgoing (TCP) ports : 137, 139, 427, 9100, 9220, 9500
Just to add, here are instructions to help you with Setting Up the Printer for a Wireless Network for the HP Deskjet F4580 and F4583 All-in-One Printers

  • New Mac mini & New Wireless Keyboard - can't complete setup

I just picked up a new Mac mini, and a new Apple wireless keyboard. I'm setting up the mini for the first time and i can't complete the setup because the new wireless keyboard doesn't seem to be recognized during the initial mini setup process. Should it be?
I can use the mouse to get me to the point where it requires me to setup an account, but without the keyboard I'm unable to do so.
Is this normal? I don't have a USB keyboard or I would have just plugged it in and finished. I should be able to do this with the new wireless keyboard, right?

I had the same problem with my wife's pre 2009 Intel Mini, had to use a USB KB to do a fresh install of SL, because the BT KB wasn't picked up.
Then on my early 2009 Mini I updated it from L to SL and after SL SW update found several updates, including a bluetooth update. When it came to applying the BT update, it said turn off BT, then proceed. Next came the need for me to enter my password to proceed, but that wasn't possible as the BT KB no longer responded. Fortunately I have a USB KB handy which did the trick.
So my conclusion is you need a USB KB as well as the BT KB, to manage a BT KB Mac. (With the above two examples I used a wired mouse)

  • Can't complete setup after setting wi fi

Hello, I'm new to apple products and we just got a new Ipad2 from the institution. I was setting the thing up but when I got to the wi fi connection part I connected to a wireless network here (our wireless network is not very good but it managed to connect since it shows a check next to it). But now the "Next" button continues to be disabled so I can't get further in the setup. Anyone has any idea what's happening and how can I complete the setup? Thanks.

Seriously? Everything is communicating as usual on their network and a reboot is perscribed?
Okay. I'm also having this issue. Nothing has changed on my network. My daughters' notebooks, my son's PC, my server, my workstation, my notebook, my netbook, my xbox 360, my PS3 and any of the twelve refurbished PCs I have for sale in my shop (I work from home with my shop attached to my house) all connect without fail. I have up to 253 devices alloted for in my IP scheme within my router and I even went as far as to assign my iPhone a static IP address with all of the correct gateway and DNS info. I get no WiFi connection at all; I only see an indication of 3G. When I go back to DHCP and an IP address is shown, it is 169.254.168.99 with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 and no other info.
Any real help would be greatly appreciated.
