Can't complete Windows 7 installation - mouse and keyboard wont work

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on my new iMac and am running in to a problem. I have the comprehensive instructions document printed, and am following it. I've created the partition for Windows using Boot Camp Assistant, I've inserted the Windows CD and selected Start Installation in Boot Camp. The computer restarts and loads up from the Windows CD. All good so far. It loads some Windows files and then the installation options pop up asking me to select language, country etc. Its here that I get stuck, as my iMac's wireless keyboard and magic mouse have stopped responding.
I thought I must have missed something and have reread the instructions, but there's no mention of the iMac's peripherals not working during the Windows installation. What am I to do? I don't have any other USB mice or keyboards to hand if that's the solution.

Just a follow up question on this - does the size of the partition have to just be enough for the windows installation itself, or for all programmes you would want to install to run under Windows?
I've set the partition size at 32gb for a windows 7 installation, but im thinking if it has to be big enough for my games collection i'll need to start over the partition 50/50.

the setup that works to me now is
automatic xorg.conf with the AutAddDevices False (disable hotplug) lines
dbus and hal enabled in deamons
this lines instruct xorg to use xf86-input-mouse/keyboard instead of evdev. ie it looks like with evdev there is no point in xf86-input-mouse/keyboard

• Bluetooth Mighty Mouse and Keyboard not working in Win XP!

Hi All,
I simply cannot get my Bluetooth Mighty Mouse and Keyboard to work in Win XP via Bootcamp! The bluetooth icon appears in the tray and even shows that they are connected but they do nothing at all. One thing to note is that they show up as connected but with no password. Could this be the problem? If I reconnected the two with new passcodes for XP, would they still work when I reboot in OSX?

upgrading to vista sorted things out!

• Apple wireless mouse and keyboard stop working ... now says OS X version and bluetooth incompatible

For no apparent reason my apple wireless mouse and keyboard stopped working. I was not upgrading or installing anything, the batteries are good, nothing was changed as far as I know. Now bluetooth discovers the paired devices, connects for about 30 seconds, the disconnects ... or stays connected but doesn't work.
What's happenned ... I'm rushing to finish a big job ... any ideas? I've tried re-pairing but doesn't work ... says that OSX version may be incompatible with device bluetooth ... I'm using Lion so maybe there is another lion problem?

Hello:
Barry: What do you mean with "making devices favorites"?
This is the method:
Go to system preferences>bluetooth.  Highlight an item in the sidebar.  If detailed information does not appear, click on the little gear and select show more info.  Then click on the gear again and select favorite.
And how could an hardware-related problem be (temporarily) solved rebooting the OS?
Intermittent problems are, IMHO, most often caused by hardware.  Restarting will occasionally "fix" problems - why, I do not know.

• TS3048 I can't log in the mouse and keyboard are not paired to computer

I can't log in to my computer because both the mouse and keyboard lights are blinking

Hello:
Try resetting the SMC (no peripherals needed).

• USB mouse and keyboard not working

Any advice/thoughts/suggestions appreciated:
All 3 USB ports at the back of my iMac have stopped working.  This means I can't use either a keyboard or mouse, so have no way of logging in.  I turn my iMac on, it boots up as usual, but when it gets to the login screen, the mouse and keyboard don't work and I get a message about bluetooth set-up. (Both my mouse and keyboard are wired, not bluetooth).
I have tried an SMC reset (by turning the iMac off, unplugging all USB devices and the power cable, leaving the iMac for a few minutes and then plugging the cable back in a turning it on again).  This didn't work.
I've also tried a different version of the SMC reset where I hold down the power button whilst all the cables are unplugged and also as I plug the power cable back in.  After doing this, the fan turns on at full speed (v loud), but the mouse and keyboard still don't work.
I've also checked my mouse on a different computer and it works fine.
Has anyone got any other suggestions / workarounds?
Note I can't do a PRAM reset because my keyboard doesn't work.
Is it probably that the USB hardwear has failed?  If so, is it possible to repair this?  It is worth repairing given it is a 5/6 year old iMac (the white plastic one) which is probably on its last legs anyway?
many thanks!
Jez.

Try the SMC reset again, only this time wait 5 minutes in set 3 instead of fifteen seconds.
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Wait fifteen seconds. 5 minutes.
4. Attach the computer's power cord.
5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

• [Solved] Mouse and Keyboard Dont Work After BIOS Update

I spent the last few hours in windows 7 trying to prove to the guys over at MSFN that my problem wasn't driver or bios related by updating to the latest drivers and upgrading my bios to the most recent version. After I was finished I decided to boot back into arch to work some more on my custom kernel (since oddly it had the same problem before the bios update, the mouse and keyboard worked on one boot but once i rebooted into it again they no longer worked) and found that the keyboard and mouse no longer worked, thinking I had rebooted into the custom kernel by accident I rebooted and selected the default kernel once again only to find that the mouse and keyboard still didn't work.
Any ideas on how to fix this? I really don't want to reinstall since I just installed it last night.
Edit: Another silly mistake, i had renamed the original xorg.conf and never put back when I was finished. This makes me wonder why KDM even started up at all though.

Hello base76, welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that the mouse and keyboard aren't working correctly. I will try to assist you with this.
To start could you please provide the following:
Model and product numbers for you notebook.
Currently install operating system.
Were these working previously? If yes, were any changes made prior to them not working?
Have you attempted any troubleshooting? If yes, what have you tried so far?

• Mouse and keyboard stop working ocassionally and I have to re-boot the computer. does anyone else have this issue?

I  have a pwoer Mac with a dual quad processor and current os. If I turn off the computer at night and power up the next day my wireless mouse and keyboard do not work nor does my hardwired mouse. I have to hold the power button to re-boot the computer to get it to work.

Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.
And/or...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

• External Mouse and Keyboard Stop Working When X220 is Docked and Screen is Closed

I have an X220 with a docking station, external monitor and external keyboard/mouse.  When I start the laptop from a cold boot and it's docked, my external mouse and keyboard work fine with the screen open or closed.
If I undock and redock with the screen closed, the external keyboard doesn't work and the mouse cursor moves, but the mouse buttons don't do anything.  If I open the screen, then the keyboard and mouse work fine.
I've swapped the keyboard and mouse and still have the same problem, so it's not the kb/mouse.  This is a brand new X220 and the issue has been occurring since it was purchased.
Any thoughts?

hey mhambalek,
hard to say what's going on, though i would recommend heading to http://support.lenovo.com , do a full update of your unit.
also, if the external keyboard & mouse & monitotor is connected to your unit without the docking station, does the same thing happen?

• T510 Mouse and Keyboard stops working with Windows Update - unable to roll back, happened twice

My mouse has been working fine for a while but it stopped working followed by the keyboard, I put it down to a Windows update but because Windows 7 keeps bluescreening on a restore point I couldn't recover.  I contacted Lenovo got the rebuild disc for my machine, completely rebuilt it, all working fine, then after 2 days same issue, mouse stopped, keyboard stopped, restore points make no difference.  Does anyone know what windows update is causing this and if there is a fix aside from rebuilding, I can't keep doing this and I need to understand the cause really, not had it with a laptop before.  Gone back to using my old laptop until I can get it sorted.  Does anyone have any ideas?

I installed the latest drivers via windows update and got the touchpad back, rebooted, it went again.  Netiher the trackpoint or touchpad work.  I then thought rather than focus on drivers check the bios.  I disabled the trackpoint in the bios, still neither works, however if I disable the touchpad in the bios and enable the trackpoint, the trackpoint does consistently work.  I can't explain why the touchpad worked after a touchpad update but now fails, the ultranav driver is installed but if both are enabled in the bios it say it isn't installed, if the trackpoint is enabled it tells me I need to enable both so it clearly knows it's there.  What's curious is that this doesn't happen on the complete clean IBM build.  I can't not turn off windows updates, I'm a developer so Ioad the laptops up with a vast variety of software and I need many of the windows update fixes, either way I am surprised they are conflicting with the touchpad so dramatically.  I can't see it being a virus I'm using two layers of protection and if I blow the machine away and installed the updates via an .iso image (so it's never connected to anything else), I can replicate the problem.  It's feasible it's another piece of software causing the conflict.  Any one have any idea what could be going on or seen it before?

• Can't complete windows installation - Stuck at Press any key to boot from..

I am unable to install windows xp service pack 3 or windows 7 on to my iMac running latest boot camp installer. I can start the installation process, but when windows installer completes copying all the files on to the boot camp partition and reboots the system I get stuck at this message "PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM A CD OR DVD", which won't go away even if I wait for 10-15 minutes. To get rid of this I have to hard reset the iMac by pressing the power button for a few seconds and then boot into Mac HD using the option key.
Please advise if I need to tweak some settings to complete the installation or if you need more information to resolve this issue. Thanks!

I was able to complete the installation process by formatting the windows bootcamp partition through windows installer (and not using Mac disk utility to format the partition into NTFS format). Hope this helps someone.

• Bootcamp, Mighty Mouse and Keyboard not working

Hi All,
I just install yesterday Windows 7 (Ultimate 64bits) by Bootcamp in my iMac 21" (bought in 2013).
During the installation, the Mighty Mouse and the keyboard were not working (except the first W7 screens, selecting partition and language), and now, installation finished, i got to use an external keyboard to select username and password, because Mighty Mouse and Wireless Keyboard are not working with Windows.
I restart the computer using OSX and both are working fine.
Could you please help me?

• The menu bar goes transparent after 50-60 seconds and my mouse scroll wheel and keyboard wont work unless I click somewhere on the screen

I hope someone can help. I'm using Firefox 31.0.1
The menu bar at the top of the screen is a white transparent color and everything is working fine but after 50 or 60 seconds it changes to completely transparent, I can still read the words file, edit etc. This is where the scroll wheel on the mouse and anything I am typing stops working. Now all I have to do is click somewhere in the window and it works again but only for 50-60 seconds. I have had to click the screen twice since I started typing this because when I look at the screen, everything I have typed is not there because the menu bar went transparent again while I was typing. Its driving me nuts.
I don't remember this being a problem before today, if it was I would surely have noticed. Have I pressed something or clicked on something by accident??
I'm considering throwing the lot out the window, its really annoying, please help lads and ladies.

Hello,
According to your user agent, you are on Firefox 32. If you planned to use Firefox 31 ESR, you can grab a copy here:
* https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/
Out of curiosity, when it turns transparent, is there a "(Not Responding)" appended to the end of the window title? If you don't have the Window title being shown, it might show up if you have window titles shown on your taskbar, or in the task manager (right click on your taskbar and select "Start Task Manager"). If you do see a Not Responding, it could be a slow script on one of the pages you are viewing.
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

• Mouse and Keyboard stops working after a while

Hi, I'm not even sure where to start to find the cause of the problem. I have a normal ps/2 keyboard and USB optical mouse, both of them just stops working after a few hours. The light on the mouse just dies and the keyboard is not responsive at all.  I have to do a hard reboot of my computer. How and where can I diagnose the problem? I noticed the problem started when I upgraded to the latest kernel.

And then after a while it will just use a new address:
Oct 31 01:47:15 wdesktop usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 6
Oct 31 01:47:15 wdesktop usb 1-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 7
Oct 31 01:47:16 wdesktop usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Oct 31 01:47:16 wdesktop input: Microsoft Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical as /class/input/input8
Oct 31 01:47:16 wdesktop input,hidraw0: USB HID v1.00 Mouse [Microsoft Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical] on usb-0000:00:10.0-1
Then after that my mouse is unusable, the following is shown:
Oct 31 01:48:41 wdesktop usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 7
Oct 31 01:48:41 wdesktop usb 1-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 8
Oct 31 01:49:13 wdesktop usb 1-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 9
Oct 31 01:49:45 wdesktop usb 1-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 10
Oct 31 01:49:56 wdesktop usb 1-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 11
Oct 31 01:50:08 wdesktop uhci_hcd 0000:00:10.0: Controller not stopped yet!
Unplugging and plugging the mouse back does not work
I found a workaround for that by unplugging the mouse, removing the uhci_hcd and adding it back, so:
sudo rmmod uhci_hcd
sudo modprobe uhci-hcd
But I'm still not sure what causes the problem.

• Mouse and keyboard stop working with Mavericks

This has happened twice now since installing Mavericks.
I'll be working along, and then all of a sudden, I am not able to click with my mouse and my keyboard stops working. I AM able to move the cursor around on the screen. But, I am not able to click on anything and I can't use the keyboard to force quit the finder. The only way to get unstuck is to press the power button on the front of the Mac to shut it down and then restart.
I am using a wired Apple Keyboard and a wireless Apple Magic Mouse. My Mac is a MacPro 2 x 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac.
Like I said. this has never happened before. But it's happened twice since installing Mavericks.

Everytime I restart my computer, especially for updating maverick, my keyboard and attached mouse (both apple for an Imac) stop working. When I plug in an other keyboard, I can get into my Imac again. Would this SMC apply to this problem as well?
What should I do?
thanks, hb
