Can't Configure/Find Airport Express

On Wednesday night, my Airport Express was working just fine as a client on my Airport Snow network. I just use it for Airtunes. My network is closed. Last night, iTunes announced it couldn't find my Express. Attempting just to do a soft reboot of it, I apparently did a hard one, because it suddenly showed up as Apple Network 6bd5d3. So, I went to the Airport Setup Assistant and started trying to configure it. First did 'Set up a new'. It finds the Apple Network, I say continue, and it connects to Apple Network, then after a few moments says it can't find my base station. When I try 'Set up an existing' it doesn't show the Apple Network at all. Nor does Airport Admin Utility. At this point, I'm baffled. Thinking it might work like my base stations, I tried connecting it directly to the computer with an ethernet cable, but that seemed to work even worse. I just don't understand why it would show up as a network under my Airport menu, and allow me to connect to it (although of course since it's not connected to the internet, I can't be online connected to it), and then have it not show up for Airport Admin Utility. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Hello jvreagan. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility (located in the \Applications\Utilities folder), to change settings.

  • I can not configure my airport express

Hi everyone, I'm currently in China and I bought and Airport express just to have a bit more signal in my dorm, however it's been 2 days and I can not configure my airport express everything seems find until the point that I choose join to an existing network and then choose my college and it get stuck for almost 20 min and after it says something about an error, then I switch off and it no longer recognized the airport it keeps looking for and airport base. Please what should I do?

The AirPort Express cannot wirelessly "extend" or "repeat" the wireless signal from another router.....unless that other router is an Apple product.
It is highly unliklely...but possible.....that the dorm would be using another Apple router to provide the wireless service.
The Express is really designed to connect to an Ethernet wall port using a short Ethernet cable connection. When you do it this way, the Express can be set up to provide your own private wireless network in the room.

  • Can't configure old Airport express

    Hi There,
I can't configure an Airport Express because Airport Utility was upgraded. I've found several posts on how to get around this but in each case, the software or automator script download links are either broken or the software/script no longer works.
I already own 4x Apple Wireless devices and am not interested in owning another one!
Is there a way to configure this device on a newer mac (10.7.5)?
    Cheers
    Ben

You must install the older utility.
Try this one and tell us which thing doesn't work.. later versions of lion use the same method as Mountain Lion.. Apple actually blocked it from working.. amazing people!!
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

  • HT5022 How can I configure an AirPort Express 802.11g on Mac OSX 10.8.5?

I can't configure an Airport Express 802.11g using a MacBook Air with MacOS X 10.8.5 installed.
AirPort Utility 5.6.1 cannot be installed on a computer running OS 10.8.5...
    Help!

As you know you cannot administer the older 802.11g AirPorts from Macs running the latest OS X versions or from an iOS device.
You still have a few options to do so:
Use a Mac running OS X Lion 10.7.2 or lower.
Use a Windows PC running Windows 7 or lower.

  • I can't configure my Airport Express after updating to iOS7

Since updating to iOS7 and after changing the name and password on my Airport Extreme I can't configure my Airport Express via my iPad (neither in the Airport App, nor under Wi-Fi in the control panel App). Please advise!

Try the "protected setup" method of configuring that adapter.  According to the electronic book "Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network", that involves selecting the AirPort Utility menu option Base Station > Add Wireless Clients.  TiVo may have more information on how to do that.

  • How can I configure an airport express to connect extra speakers to those on my Apple TV?

    Hi,
I'm using a net gear router to play music on speakers connected to my tv via Apple TV. I want to set up another set of speakers upstairs mot play the same music throat the house. Can I connect another set of speakers to the airport express and have all speakers running in harmony? any advice gratefully received!
    Cheers, Dean

You can connect (up to five practically) AirPlay Speakers and stream to them simultaneously from a single iTunes host. Your Apple TV would be one of those AirPlay Speakers.
Each additional AirPlay Speaker would be configured to join the existing wireless network. For additional details on configuring an AirPort Express for AirPlay, please see the following Apple Support article.

  • Amber Light keeps flashing - can't configure my AirPort Express

Here is my setup: Dell XPS M1530 running Windows Vista. I have my cable modem directly plugged into my AirPort Express. I have no other wireless network or router.
I'm able to connect to the AirPort Express through my wireless card and establish a connection and surf the net but the Airport Utility Software won't let me configure the device and the light keeps flashing amber. It never turns to green. I've tried every combination of resetting my AirPort Express, cable modem and computer.
I can see the AirPort Express Base Station icon on the left hand side of the AirPort utility software , when I click "manual setup" or "continue" it try to detect a wireless device but it always comes back with a the message: "An error occurred while trying to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. error -4"
    Am I missing something?

Temporarily, disconnect the ethernet cable from the Express that is coming from the modem.
Connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express, turn off wireless on the computer, and see if AirPort Utility can access the settings that way. If so, go ahead and set it up.
If you are able to configure the device, then you will get an error message that you do not have an internet connection...because the Express is not connected to the modem.
When you re-connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the Express and restart both the modem and Express, you should get the green light.
Depending on the type of modem you have, some additional configuration may be needed. The important thing at this point is to get AirPort Utility to access the settings on the Express so that you can configure it.
You may need to do the factory reset again on the Express. If AirPort Utility still cannot access the settings on the Express after this, try another computer, Mac if possible, to see if that might be the issue.
Sometimes, an internal component fails within the Express. When this occurs, AirPort Utility cannot access the device no matter what, and there are really no other options except to replace the device.
Please post back on your progress.

  • Lynksys can no longer find Airport Express

I have an Airport express that I use to stream itunes from my Dell via a linksys router to my home music system. It has worked flawlesly for over a year. I unpluged it while the room it is in was painted. Now after replugging it in, the Airport admin utility / base station chooser can no longer see the airport.
I have tried to reset it loads of times, and rerun the setup utility, but still cannot get the airport to come up in the Airport admin utility.
    Thanks for any help.

I'm back in bussiness! Thanks;) This was really helpful. Using an ethernet connection got my pc to see the AE almost immediatly.
I however used the settings that origionaly worked for me. When I ditched the ethernet cable and went back to the wirless router all of the AE settings stayed locked in.

  • MacBook Pro can't find Airport Express

Just unwrapped an Airport Express in order to simply stream music from my MBPro through the AP Express connected to my amp. But the lap-top refuses to find it, what straightforward step am I missing?

Pull down the AirPort menu bar item on your MBPro and look for a network with a name like "Apple Network xxxxxx", where the x's are the last part of the "AirPort ID" of the AirPort Express.  If you see that, select it, then use AirPort Utility to configure the AirPort Express.

  • Utility Airpot Version 5.3.2 (532.8) can't find Airport Express

    Hi,
I've been using my Airport Express base for a year whit no problems.
Since the the 4th of June, I can't connect to my net anymore. My utility airport can't see the Airport express base anymore.
I'm on MacBook Pro Intel core 2 duo MAc OS X 10.5.3 running Utility airport version 5.3.2
What's the most bizzare aspect, is that my brother who has an old Ibook G4 but is running on the same OS X 10.5.3 and the same Utility airport versione 5.3.2 doesn't have any problem at all!!
I tried even to initialize my mac so to bring it back to the state when always was working fine, but still utility airport can't see any base!! Whereas my bro keeps surfing fast and furious...
I'm getting mad over that...please help me!

I actually have the same problem (but don't get excited - I haven't fixed it yet)!
Around the first week of June my airport express wasn't emitting the signal any more but my airport extreme base station was fine.
I tried changing my password from WEP to WPA/WPA2 which I guess is more up to date and more secure - thinking that since I'd upgraded to Leopard there were incompatibility issues some how.
I've done a hard reset to the airport express (I have not tried restoring factory settings yet - I might try that) and it showed up in the airport admin utility and I tried to reconfigure it and it timed out and said that it was not able to configure it (or something to that effect).
The next time I opened the airport admin utility, my airport express didn't show up.
It is maddening, and if anybody could help the both of us out, that would be great!!

  • Airport configuration utility doesn't find Airport Express anymore

    Hi,
This morning I updated my Airport configuration utitlity to version 6.3. When I opened the new version I noticed it couldn't find my Airport Express anymore. There was an error about the AE not being in my network anymore and whether I would the utility let it forget or not... However, I was still connected to the internet. So, no big problem for now, but I would like to be able to configure my Airport Express when needed, and that's not possible know.
Anyone else experiencing the same problem? I tried to reset (soft, hard and back to factory defaults) the AE, but no result. Only way to reconfigure my AE is through the wireless networks overview on my iPhone. The configuration utility on my iPhone works neither.
The old version of the utility (5.6) does recognize the AE by the way. Seems more like a software problem to me then?
The configuration utility on my iPhone works neither.

his worked for me and Airport Utility sees all my devices now.I indeed did it through the Terminal. But behold: in another thread I found the solution to this problem. I found this:

Re: Airport Utility v 6.3 Fails to See Airport Extreme or Express
Jun 13, 2013 10:03 AM (in response to williamfromames)
Looks like 6.3 is using IPv6 to talk to Time Capsules/Airports. I know I had turned off IPv6 long ago since I didn't need it. Also looks like Apple has removed 'Off' as a valid choice for that setting.
    To turn IPv6 back on:
    Open System Preferences->Network
    Click Advanced
Change Configure IPv6 from 'Off' to 'Link-local only'
    Click Ok
    Click Apply
AU 6.3 should now be able to communicate with your device.
This worked for me and Airport Utility 6.3 sees all devices in my network. You should try this too. Good luck!

  • Cannot configure my AirPort Express (1st generation) anymore. Am using AirPort Utility 5.4.2 Setup Assistant. What do I do wrong?

I cannot configure my AirPort Express (1st generation) as base Station anymore. I had to reset it because I lost my password.
I first tried my IPads (IOS 6). These returned the message: Your AirPort Express cannot be configured with this software. Go to apple.com/nl/support/airport for more information.
As it is an old one, I have downloaded the eldest available AirPort Utility I could find on the Apple site (AirPort utility 5.4.2) to my computer. I ran the AirPort Setup Assistant wireless and the assistant found my AirPort named " Apple Network XXXXX". (I notes that the Assistant also returned the message: If this is not the AirPort Extreme you want to set up ...)
    I clicked <NEXT>
After trying to connect to Network, I received the message: Cannot connect to network or there are no AirPort base stations on the network.
To be sure I retried running the Assistant after connecting the computer and the AirPort using an ethernet cable. The error message was the same.
    What do I do wrong?
Am I using the wrong Utility software? If so, which version do I have to download and from where?
Is a first generation AirPort anyhow compatible wth 4the generation IPads or shoud I just buy a new AirPort.
I hope someone can help me...

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me. You are correct. Your iOS devices will NOT be able to administer the 802.11g base stations because the version of the AirPort Utility that they use is incompatible.
For Windows XP, AirPort Utility for Windows v5.5.3 should work. However, v5.4.2 that you have should work as well.
Your XP computer needs to connect to the AirPort's wireless network BEFORE you can access the AirPort with the AirPort Utility. You may want to try connecting your computer directly to the AirPort using an Ethernet cable.

  • Cannot configure the Airport Express

I connected my Airport Express to my router (not an Extreme Base station). I got the solid green light, I can see the network wirelessly and I can access the internet with no problems.
The problem is that I cannot access the Airport Express in order to configure it (I want to add some filtering and some additional security). The Setup Assistant is searching for an Extreme Base Station which it cannot find (since I do not have one) and so does the Airport Admin util.
Is there a way (or perhaps a different configuration utility for Win XP) to configure the Airport Express?
    Thx
      Windows XP

Thanks for the help. I was out of the country for a few weeks but now I am back trying to resolve the problem. Nothing helps, the Airport Express "insists" on the fact that it cannot find a base Station. I am not sure what else is there to do and I am closed to go back to my old 802.11b D-Link wireless router. Do you have any other idea that may resolve the problem?
On another note, why does there have to be any connection between the Airport Express and any base station? Why can’t I configure the Airport Express without being connected to any basestation?

  • Time capsule can't recognize my airport express

My system 10.5.4 was working fine until my modem died. I replaced the modem and then got my time capsule up and running. When I try to add my airport express (which I use to play music on my stereo) in airport utility I am able to find it only if I do a reset. I go through the series of questions and when everything is supposed to be configured the airport express disappears from the choices on the left of the airport utility. It then says that an error occurred. The express gives off a blinking orange light.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, LePastenague. This re-set was easy. WIth the AE base stations plugged in, I pressed the reset button. Airport Utility walked me through the remaining steps. The process was very easy, and the new router (Airport Time Capsule) is talking to the base stations just as it should.
