Can't configure my Time Machine

When I first purchased the Time Capsule I was able to successfully set it up using my wireless network. Now a few months later, I finally settled into a new apartment and am trying to set up my Time Capsule with a new wirless network and haven't been able to do it. The menu bar says that the Time Machine isn't configured. I have checked and triple checked the wireless network and it is working perfectly fine. I can't find my time capsule. Do I have to reset it? Do I have to set it up again? How do I do that? The amber light is flashin but I have no idea why at this point.

If you moved, it's generally best to do a factory reset on the TC and re-set it up from scratch.

  • Help with configuration of Time Machine backups on a wireless network

    Hello,
I was wondering if someone could help me with the configuration of Time Machine on a wireless network. I have it working some what but I am unsure if this is the best way or if it is the right way.
I have a G4 Mac mini connected to a Airport Extreme base station via ethernet.
I have a Lacie 500GB USB drive connected to the Mac mini (Lacie is formatted GUID)
I have a Macbook that I connect via wireless to the Airport and perform backups to the Lacie 500GB via wireless.
I initially had the USB drive connected to the Macbook and Time Machine worked flawlessly.
Now that I have the setup mentioned above configured, Time Machine works but... now instead of creating folders under the Backups.backupdb folder it is doing a initial backup of everything and creating a .sparsebundle file.
I am not sure if this is working correctly? Have I configured it correctly?
Permission on the Lacie? I am also controlling the Mac mini using ARD.
Perhaps I should format the drive and start from scratch and identifying the Lacie 500GB as the Time Machine backup drive for the Macbook.
I am NOT backing up the Mac mini to the Lacie 500GB
Another question is of course the initial backup over wireless will be very slow but after that it should be quicker as only files that change are backed up correct?
Hope to have some feedback on this as I believe a lot of people are trying this setup as a workaround to not being able to backup to a Airport USB drive.
Macbook and Mac mini are both using latest Leopard with updates.

James I think what you've done is correct. The thing to be aware of is that TM backs up to a directly connected HD using a Folder and deposits data into this folder in Finder format making it easy to navigate. When TM backs up to your networked HD attached to the Mac mini as you've configured for your MacBook a sparsebundle disk image is created by TM.
Now when TM on the MacBook executes it will auto mount that sparsebundle disk image on the MacBook to perform the backup and then dismounts it.
If you invoke the TM browser on your MacBook while the TM backup is in progress the TM browser has something to work with and will display the TM history. If however, on your MacBook you launch the TM browser when the TM backup is not executing you will see no history. What you need to do is to mount that network Mac mini LaCie 500GB USB HD on your MacBook and I believe you can then see the TM history.
This is very similar to the AirDisk feature that Apple dropped off from the TM feature list just prior to Leopard GM release on Occ 26.
Now having said all that, I'm a little puzzled why the TM browser launched on the MacBook isn't auto mounting your backup volume (the LaCie USB HD) as this is clearly what's required. This maybe a bug that should be reported to Apple via their Feedback process.
Hopefully I've understood your configuration and what you've posted as an issue(s).

  • Why can't i find Time Machine Back Up Device in Hard Drive

Why can't i find Time Machine  Device in Hard Drive when i have plugged it already. White light just keeps on blinking.

Understanding and resolving a blinking status light
Here are the reasons that the status light may blink:
Your Time Capsule has detected that the internal hard drive has reported a SMART error
The base station has not yet been configured
The base station has been reset.
A new firmware update is available for the base station.
No IP address is available for the base station.
A Wi-Fi base station in Extended Mode is out-of-network Wi-Fi range of a primary Wi-Fi base station.
The WAN Ethernet cable is unplugged from the Wi-Fi base station.
The Wi-Fi base station lacks a path to the Internet (or local router).
Internet access may be temporarily unavailable from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
A persistent, blinking, amber status light indicates that your base station may require your attention.
How to resolve a blinking amber status light alert
Launch AirPort Utility to determine why your base station status light is blinking amber.
AirPort Utility opens automatically if your Wi-Fi base station requires your attention. You may also choose to launch AirPort Utility at any time.
In the AirPort Utility window, locate your Wi-Fi base station and double-click on it to open the Summary window. Note: If you have more than one Wi-Fi base station, double-click on the icon for the Wi-Fi base station that has the amber circle next to it.
When the Summary window appears, double-click the amber circle to the right of Wi-Fi base station Status to open the Status window.
The Status window lists any conditions that require your attention. Respond to each item until there are no more items listed.
Eliminating the blinking, amber status light may require making changes to a specific setting, or putting a checkmark in the "Ignore" checkbox beside any option you don't wish to change. A checkmark simply tells the AirPort that you are aware of the issue and you have chosen to ignore it. For example, you may wish to leave your AirPort open without a password so that anyone can join your wireless network.
Click Update to apply your changes (the base station will restart).
After the base station has restarted, the status light should be green and not blinking. If the status light stays amber in color and blinks after the Wi-Fi base station restarts, you may repeat the steps above.

  • After a clean install, how can I continue using Time Machine?

After a clean install, how can I continue using Time Machine?
I booted from my recovery partition, erased my HD, installed the same OS, (Lion, 10.7.5) then restored from my TM.
If it asks if i want to use TM, I say yes. When I chose the drive, it seems to want to start all over, instead of just picking up where I left off.
Is there any way of picking up where I left off?

    Hi Frank,
You are sure you looking in your Library in /Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Library and not /Library at the top level of your harddrive?
When you open iCal what do you see?  Are the calendars the two default Home and Work ones?
I really appreciate the responses -- especially if you are in the UK as opposed to Ontario.
Why, do you have something against London Ontario?

How do I back up my documents from my Macbook on iCloud? or can I only use time machine or external HD?
I think I have missed something in trying to read all of the pages on apple site about icloud.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't back up a computer to iCloud.
You can use any back up software, you should always back up to a different drive.

  • Can I have several Time Machines in Mavericks?

I have several boot partitions over several disks. Am I allowed to have more than one Time Machine partition - each backing up different drives?
The same question was ever asked against Snow Leopard here, and the answer was no, "You can't have more than one Time Machine destination disk active at any one time."
Is it still the same limit today for Mavericks?
I have 1 x SSD and 3 x HDD, I just want to use one 1TB HD to back up the 500GB SSD, and the 4TB HD to back up the 2TB HD.
    Possible please?
    Thanks heaps in advance.

Called Apple Care Support and confirmed that only one Time Machine backup can be active, in other words, only one destination drive can used to perform Time Machine backup automatically.
Therefore I had to hoose the largest internal HD (4 TB) to back up all other drives (total 2.5 TB).

I don't think this was the question you were asking, but you can have multiple backup drives, now, but they are just redundant backups, not different backups.

  • How can I use the Time Machine Backups from my Old Computer?

I have two months of Time Machine backups made using my old Macintosh computer which died and I no longer have. I have now purchased a new computer and am trying to use the Time Machine back ups from the original computer, but it will not recognise them. How can I get my new MacBook Pro to use the Time Machine Backups from my old Computer? I phoned the Apple help line and they said I cannot use them and would have to delete them. This sounds crazy if you can only use the Time Machine back up file with one computer and have to delete it when you buy a new Mac. Surely there must be some way to transfer ownership (not files) from an old to the new Mac?
    Thanks

Thanks Kevin for the suggestion posted on MacOSXHints how to "Repair Time Machine after logic board changes".
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101
It seems as though I am not alone with my frustration with the way Time Machine uses the MAC address of a computer to tell one system from another. This means that if you have your Mac repaired with a new logic board, or replace your system with a new one, you can't resume backups where you left off. Reading through the readers who used the fix using Terminal, it appears that the fix does not always work. I contacted Apple again, but they were no help. Surely Apple should come out with a solution as more and more people use Time Machine/Time Capsule.
It is CRAZY that after a change computers or a switch in the computer logic board that you cannot resume your Time Machine back ups.

  • Can I use my Time Machine as an airport to print from my Ipad?

I want to use the airprint, but my printer does not have that utility. I read in another apple support, that I could use a computer as an airport.
Can I use my Time Machine as an airport for the airprint, between my Ipad and my printer?

No. Time Machine is just backup software. If you have a networkable printer that you can connect to the computer then you could possibly print to it wirelessly via your network if you enable printer sharing in your router.

  • Can I use a Time Machine Backup (on an external drive) as a "start up" drive?  I need to do a disk repair.

I am upgrading my MacBook Pro (17"; Intel Core Duo; Speed 2.16 GHz; 2 GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM) from Leopard (10.5.8) to Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  I successfully Time Machine to make a backup to an external LaCie drive.  Some issues appeared when I ran a "disk verify," and need to change the startup drive to boot up and use "repair disk."  When I tried to change the startup drive (in System Preferences) the drive with the Time Machine Backup was not recognized.  Can I even use Time Machine to create a bootable drive?  I use Carbon Copy Clone with my iMac (and can boot from the clone), but that is not an option when running OSX 10.5.8.

Only if the backup was created by Mac OS X 10.8 or newer. Use the Mac OS X 10.6 install DVD instead.
