Can't connect Airport Express with Extreme

So after 3 hours of working on this POS,I have gone to the boards in hopes that maybe someone can help me.
Situation:
Cable Modem---Airport Extreme---Airport Express---Stereo System
Computer: Windows XP
I can connect the airport extreme to the modem and get an internet connection. Airport Utility recognizes Airport extreme. No problem there.
Plug in airport express without it being tethered to a CAT 5 cable. Airport utility does not pick it up at all. The only way I can get the utility to recognize it is to tethered it to either the CAT 5 cable coming out of the modem or a cat5 cable coming out of the airport extreme. Both cases are not doable.
I want the airport extreme and the airport express to connect wirelessly. Try to setup WDS but the only way I could do that is to setup the extreme first, then disconnect the CAT 5 cable running to extreme and then reconnecting that cable to the express so that the Utility would pick it up. Set Up WDS but as soon as I reconnected the cable back to the Airport Extreme it stop working.
To add more problems, my computer will not connect wirelessly to the extreme without going to the blue screen(the one that says comp is unstable).
someone please help me.

Did you get a solution? I have a similar problem in that my i-Mac can successfully see and use the Extreme (with a Linksys modem as I am in UK where we need a modem in most instances) but the Express to which I wish to link nd play music is 'invisible'. Neither scanning through the task bar icon or using the Airport utility 'sees' the Express even though I can as I have now put it in the same room! It did see it briefly once but not since so have factory reset it and still it hides.
Any ideas?
Mervyn

  • I can not connect  airport express with my iPad 2

I am going to wifi in my ipad I press airport express and after a while the answer in a window is that:it is not possible the shaping of my airport express with this software. Please could you help me?

You need to install an older version of AirPort Utility on your Mac. Here is a suggestion:

iOS devices will not be able to configure your older AirPort Express.

  • Can't connect Airport Express wirelessly to network so that AirTunes and internet are available simultaneously

I can't connect Airport Express wirelessly to network so that AirTunes and internet are available simultaneously.  My old AE allowed this but can't make the new one work that way.

In your instructions, you say to use the same encryption type as the router has set up. well, I am using the WEP 64 bit encryption and the Airport Utility does not have this...it has 40 bit. Is this a problem, or do I have to be using a the same type of encrytion ?
WEP is available in either 40 or 104-bit, but is usually "advertised" as either 64- or 128-bit respectively. For example, 64-bit WEP uses a 40 bit key (also known as WEP-40), which is concatenated with a 24-bit initialization vector (IV) to form the 64-bit RC4 traffic key. So, WEP 64 on the Linksys & 40-bit is equivalent.
What concerns me more is the loss of bandwidth performance you are experiencing when connecting the AX. When the AX is configured as a wireless client it is acting just like any other wireless devices (computer, laptop, printer, etc.) and not like another router. This should cause little or no bandwidth loss. True the more secure the wireless encryption used WPA2 vs. WEP, the more overhead is required for security, but the differences you are seeing seem excessive.
It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the immediate area that is preventing your Linksys from providing a good clean signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like the following to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible:
    For Macs:
    o MacStumbler
    o iStumbler, or
    For PCs:
    o NetStumbler

  • Airport Express with Extreme

    Grettings,
I have recently purchased an Airport Express with the desire to extend the range of my wireless home network. I have had no problems with the Airport Extreme (other than litmited signal coverage) but I can't seem to setup the Express to save my life. Here's what I've got:
-I plug the Express into the wall, the status light goes from green to amber to flashing amber.
-Airport Admin detects the Express but cannot communicate with it.
-I cannot update the firmware because the updater cannot communicate with the Express.
In my past expereinces with Mac products setup processes have been so simple that I'm a bit confounded by my inability to get this up and running. Is something wrong? What do I need to do?
Thank you, in advance, for your assistance!

    "Factory default" reset the AX
    - (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
Set up a Wireless Distribution System (WDS)
(Note: To facilitate setting up the base stations, place them in near proximity of each other during the set up phase.)
Set up the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) as the WDS Main Base Station, by connecting directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then use the AirPort Admin Utility, located in /Applications/Utilities, to make the following settings.
    WDS Tab
    - Enable this base station as a WDS: main base station (checked)
    - Enable wireless clients on this base station (optional)
    - Click "+" to add Remote/Relay Base Stations.

  • Can I use Airport Express with iPhone in my hotel room?

Is there a way to set up an Airport Express in my hotel room when I travel, so that the provided High Speed internet cable in the room can be plugged into my Airport Express, giving me a wireless internet connection for the iPhone? I use Airport Express often this way with my MacBook, so I don't have to be tethered to the cable.

I did this about a month ago when I was in England. I just had the Airport Express with me, and had not done any configurations. I plugged it in and had the iPhone find it. It worked in some hotels, and didn't at others. When it worked it was great. I assume with some of the hotels where it didn't work, that I needed to configure it but since I didn't have my laptop I didn't have any way to configure it. Is there any kind of "universal" or "automatic" configuration you can set it up with?

  • Can I use Airport Express with a USB Hard disk as a NAS solution?

What have people tried for NAS solutions that work really well wirelessly? Can I use my Airport Express with its USB port to attach a hard disk? Or do I need an Airport Extreme base station? Or some other solution?

The price of the Time Capsule includes the NAS backup system plus a hardware router for your network.
Macs do not support USB 3.0 and most likely won't because Apple's weight is behind Thunderbolt which is considerably faster and more versatile than USB.

  • Connect airport express with rj45

my internet connection is using a rj11 "phone cable", how can i connect my airport express with it? once i plug it into my AE it seems that my fixed line is "in use" and i don´t have internet signal on it.

It is not possible to connect a phone line directly to the AirPort Express, since the AirPort Express is a simple router only.
The phone line must first connect to a broadband modem.
Then the modem connects to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express using an CAT5e or CAT6 Ethernet cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends.

  • Can I connect airport express 802.11g (old version) with iphone3GS?

    Hi all,
I have an airport extreme that I set up 2 years ago. It works with my computer, using itunes (although it disconnects constantly).
I'd like to set it up with my ihpone but I don't see it in the wifi settings and I don't see it in the airport utility.
I have the latest iOS5 on an iphone 3GS and the airport extreme is not the latest 802.11n but the version before that one.
Should I be able to connect the iphone to the airport extreme to stream music for example?
    thanks for your help.

Should I be able to connect the iphone to the airport extreme to stream music for example?
Although the iPhone can connect to the wireless network, provided by the AirPort Extreme, you would still need either an AirPort Express or Apple TV (performing as an AirPlay speaker) to get the stream from the Extreme to either a set of powered speakers, audio receiver, or TV to hear it.
I haven't verified it as I don't have an 802.11g Express lying around, but AirPlay (which has evolved from AirTunes) may not be fully supported. I'm sure someone who has this model Express can chime in.

  • Can't connect airport express to airport extreme

I have the same question as Bob did about an hour ago. I'm trying to connect a sound system in another room to my computer. I have purchased airport extreme and have it hooked up. I've also gotten airport express, but I can't seem to get airport utility to recognize it. I have moved it to the same room and even  connected it to the airport extreme, but to no avail. Everytime I do a rescan it only shows my airport extreme and the airport express light continues to blink amber. What else can I try?

You want to "extend" your network. To start, configure your AirPort Extreme and, under the Wireless tab, enable the option to "Allow this network to be extended."
From my experience, the two AirPort units need to have configuration settings that are as close to each other as possible, including such things as network name, encryption type, and channel. Some things obviously need to be different. For example, you don't want both units distributing IP addresses.
You'll also want to enable the Ethernet port on the AirPort Express, otherwise you won't be able to use it to connect your MacPro.

  • Can't connect Airport Express to my main wireless network, just my guest account.

I go to join my Airport Express to my wireless network so I can play music from Itunes to my sound system in my living room.  That is all I want to use it for at this point.  I pull up a list of the networks available, and my guest network shows up on the list, but my main network, which all my computers and Iphone is connected to, isn't on there.  I have a Linksys E3000 with a guest account set up trhough it.  Windows 7.  I called tech support and they said something about a hidden setting.  I went and checked and couldn't find anything about this.  Also, when people come over they can access my main wireless account with my password.

Hi JWHITHAM and welcome to the forums!
Have you tried manually adding your wireless network to the iPod touch? Mine does the same too sometimes and I just add it manually. So far it works.

  • Can't connect airport express to college network

I live in halls and I have an ethernet connection in my room which I want to send to my airport express and connect wirelessly on my macbook. The network is 802.1x secured, so I have to connect it each time if I've got the ethernet cable attached.
I've managed to get the airport express working as a wireless network, with airtunes, but it won't connect to the internet, I just get a 'server not found' error whenever I try to use the internet. The warning for 'no ethernet attached' has gone away, but I can't find anything else in airport utility which tells me that I'm connected to a network.
How can I get the airport express to connect properly and give me internet?

    Welcome to the discussions!
Many schools prohibit the creation of wireless networks, so you might want to check on this before you try it.
You may want to temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express for the configuration. After the configuration is done, connect the ethernet cable to the wall jack and the AirPort Express.
Configure your AirPort Express (AX) as follows:
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons to setup your wireless network. You want to "Create a wireless network" and enter your network name, security and password.
    Then click the Internet icon
Look for the Connection Sharing setting at the bottom of the page and set this to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Update to save changes and the AX will restart

  • Can't connect AirPort Express to Linksys WRT54GX

I tried connecting the AirPort Express wirelessly after resetting it, but was unable to because it couldn't connect to our network. We then tried connecting directly to the router to rename the Base Station, but the AirPort Admin Utility does not recognize it. Can anyone help?
If you have a response respond to this, I'd appreciate it if you would post here and also send an e-mail to [email protected] as the address on here is incorrect. Thank You.

This looks like the answer i've been looking for having spent half day trying other approaches. Agree with comment below that instructions with AE from Apple are totally inadequate but frankly, disagree with solution as this disadvantages almost every grandma/pa, non computer adapt person in the world and perpetuates the approach from manufacturers that it is our problem if their products dont work. My local Apple shop is closed on Sundays so i will probably try this solution but really, if it does not plug and play with the minimum of fuss, and if the manufacturers dont support their product then simply take it back to the shop and demend your money back. I dont even bother re-wrapping such products anymore. You can bet your bottom dollar that if every person that had searched this forum for a solution to what appears to be a common problem had simply returned the product we would not all be spending our free time trying to get products working using inadequate instructions.

  • Can't Connect AirPort Express to existing WPA network

I just bought an AirPort Express and I can't connect it to my existing Wireless network where I use WPA based security.
I've both tried to use the Configuration guide and done it manually with the Admin tool but it just will not connect to my Wireless network.
Less of changing form WPA-PSk to WEP128 I think I have tried "everything".
    Any ideas?

Can you changed your router to use WPA:TKIP as opposed to WPA:AES?
When I changed my router to WPA:TKIP, my airport express connected, but with AES it doesn't!
This is not good, since according to Wikipedia, AES is superior and considered part of WPA2, which Apple claim they support (and yes I am using firmware V6.3)!
    Hope this helps!
