Can't connect from Linux machine to Mac

Hello,
Having trouble connecting from a linux machine (Fedora Core 4) to my mac. I see the mac in the "Network" dialog box ("Places->Connect to Server" on Gnome). When i try to connect to it, i get the authentication required dialog, put my info in, but no dice.
Any ideas?

Very strange. When do you get the permission denied message? Do you get the prompt to enter a password?
Are both users admins? There may be some restrictions for non admin users.
My guess is that either you don't enter the right username or password or IP (but I guess you triple verified that a million times already?), or that you already have modified some configuration of the Mac. ssh should work out of the box, after you enable it, but there are ways to invalidate it.
If you do
<pre>
ls -al /usr/bin/ssh
</pre>
what do you get?
</pre>

  • Printing from linux machine to Mac shared printer?

    I have a brand new Brother MFC 6800 that is connected to my Mac (10.4.4) via USB. I have a Linux box at home (Mandriva 2006), and I'd like to be able to print through the network to this printer.
    I've been searching the web for instructions for how to set up CUPS and/or SMB to allow me to print this way, but have only come up with a few tangential references. Almost everything I've found is how to print from a Mac to a Linux print server. I want to do the opposite.
    I'm handy enough with Un*x to edit config files, but not handy enough to know what to put in there. I'd appreciate anyone who can point me to a site that might show me how to do it.
    Quicksilver   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Chris,
       I've not done this with a Mac but CUPS is CUPS. Open the /etc/cups/client.conf file on your Linux machine and change the ServerName line to point to your Mac. That may be all you have to do because the Mac's CUPS automatically adds the local printer for you. You may have to define a queue for it; I'm not sure but I don't think so. Also, you will probably have to authorize it on the Mac. The /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file on the Mac should have a line in it that look like:
    Listen <Mac_IP>:631
    where <Mac_IP> should be replaced by the IP address of your Mac, (not 127.0.0.1) and similarly for <Linux_IP> below. Such a line should already exist for 127.0.0.1. Just copy-and-paste in a new copy of this line and change the IP address. Inside the definition of root directory you similarly may need to add an "Allow From" statement:
    <Location />
       Allow From <Linux_IP>
    </Location>
    The directory definitions are modeled on similar definitions in Apache's httpd.conf file. There may be more that is necessary; I'll see if I can find more specific information that I've saved. If you have to do more, please post it to this thread so that there is complete documentation for others. Of course a consistent configuration depends on having static IP addresses on your local network.
       I'm not really surprised that you didn't find much if you searched for strings including Mac or Apple; this is a purely UNIX question. The CUPS administration documentation can be found online at cups.org or even on your own machine at http://localhost:631/ or on your drive in the /usr/share/doc/cups directory.

  • Help with Oracle 10g Client Connectivity from Linux to IBM SAN storage

    Hello Oracle Experts,
    This is my first post. My client is having oracle 10g database up and running in IBM SAN storage.
    We have some NMS tools running in Red Hat Linux version 5. So, these tools require connectivity to Oracle database which is residing in SAN storage connected with the Fibre cables.
    How do I establish the connectivity from Linux to SAN storage. If would be glad if you can explain me the steps and also if there is any pre-installation/post-installation, patches and procedures involved.
    If it is IP based network we normally give the IP address of the host running the database server. I have no idea about SAN storage connected with Fibre cable.
    Please guide me to establish the connectivity from linux 5 to SAN.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    RaviShankar.

    Hi Rajesh,
    Actually I will not be touching the Oracle instance SAN box directly. I will only access the database from another machine. I my case it is Linux box.
    So, my question is how do you make the Oracle Client in Linux box to connect to Oracle instance running in another non ip based machine SAN storage.Install Oracle client on this Linux machine ..
    Make sure you have network connectivity from linux machine to database server. You need to connect to server where db instance is running and you need not to bother about SAN storage.
    make tns entry into client $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora file.
    Use sqlplus to connect to database using client.

  • Can't connect from mavericks (MBP) to mountain lion (MacPro) via Wifi

    i am trying to google for answers to this and i just come up with answers about connections to printers or hdmi or TV's etcetera.
    the problem is that i can connect to my laptop (macbook pro) from my desktop (mac pro) but i can't connect from my laptop (MBP) to my desktop (mac pro). i used to be able to do this but for some reason all i see if "Share Screen" or "Disconnect" and my iCloud Account is listed as "Connected As" but there is no data shown in Finder.
    does anyone know what search terms i can google for or if there is a Settings section that i should be checking?
    i tried dragging the Mac Pro icon out of the Shared section and i tried hitting disconnect as well as restarting both machines and turning off wifi on the laptop (hmmm. maybe i will shut both down at the same time...?) and so far no solutions.
    right now i have to go to the desktop to move files around and this is a major pain.
    i can see the network and i can print...
    THANKS for any help

    hi. thank you. this is really aggravating. i am checking the mac pro this morning (it is the one i cannot access from my laptop) and attached is the screenshot. does this look OK?
    also, i am starting to wonder is it possible that the "Computer Name" has changed itself on the network or is it possible that i have some control over /naming/ the computer? it seems to often be named "MyName Mac Pro (2)" which always bothers me since there is no 1 Mac Pro and i would like to get rid of the appended 2.
    but ALSO i don't recall ever having changed anything in system preferences so i am wondering if somehow the computer renamed itself or something weird has happened.
    finally, is it possible something is amiss with the fact that FINDER says it is connected via my icloud EMAIL account at the top of the Finder window on my Laptop whereas when i check just now on the desktop it shows that i am connnected as the SHORT NAME of my LAPTOP. i mean, when i connec tto the laptop from the desktop it shows me connected as the short name of the laptop but when i connect to the desktop as the laptop - it says i am connnected as the name of my ICLOUD ACCOUNT and i am thinking it should say i am connected as the name of my MAC PRO SHORT NAME.
    you know what i mean? is there a place in the LAPTOP to check where i input what name and password i am connecting to the Mac Pro under...
    THANK YOU

  • Can i connect my iMac to a mac mini (wirelessly) and control the mac mini display on my TV?

    Can i connect my iMac to a mac mini (wirelessly) and control the mac mini display on my TV?

    Look up "screen sharing" in help
    You can control your mini (which I am assuming you are hooking to your TV) complete from your iMac.
    After you set up screen sharing, you can go to the finder, under the "go" menu choose "Connect to server" and then browse.  Choose your mac mini's name, and look for the "Screen Sharing" button.
    Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Sharing.
    Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
    To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
    All users:
    Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
    Only these users:
    Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.Click Add at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Users & Groups preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list, and then click Select.
    Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
    Anyone may request permission to control screen:
    Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
    VNC viewers may control screen with password:
    Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen.It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X.

    There is nothing in your connect string to tell sqlplus which database you want to connect to.  Therefore it assumes (by default) that you want to connect to a *local* database whose name is identified by the value of the environment variable ORACLE_SID.  And there is no such database, so he gets the reported error trying to establish a connection to a non-existent local service.
    You need to specify your target database, thusly:
    SQL>  conn sys/syspw@rmanp as sysdba
    BTW, connecting to a remote database as sysdba is considered by most DBAs to be a big secruity breach.  If you really need sysdba privileges (rare) you should be logged on to the database server machine with proper OS credentials, and work from there.
    Also, TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS PERCEIVED AS SHOUTING.

  • I work on a mac but occasionally I have to work on a PC.  Can I connect my PC to my mac so I don't have to use 2 different monitors

    I work on a mac but occasionally I have to work on a PC.  Can I connect my PC to my mac so I don't have to use 2 different monitors?

    Put the monitor on a KVM.  Might be able to do a wired mouse and keyboard as well.  KVM = keyboard, video, monitor switch.
    Connect the common monitor to the KVM out and each machine's video to KVM's in.  Then you switch the monitor so it is connected to the machine you want to currently use.
    The tricky part is finding an appropriate KVM to handle the video connections for the two machines and monitor.  No guarantees there.  Many current KVM's have USB connections so there is less potential hastle with mice and keboards.  But monitors use dvi, (mini-)displayport, vga, and hdmi.  And you may need adapters/converters.  So finding a appropriate KVM may be the hard part.

  • Can I connect two monitors to a Mac Mini?

    Can I connect two Monitors to a mac mini

    Yes, but how depends on what model of Mini and what kind of monitors.  Early models only had one monitor port.  Later models had a Mini-DVI port and a Mini-Displayport.  Current models have a Mini-Displayport and a HDMI port.  The Mini-DVI and Mini-Displayport can attach VGA or DVI monitors, whereas the HDMI port can't use VGA monitors.
    Beyond that, you can get Matrox's DualHead2Go or a USB->VGA or USB->DVI adapter.  The Matrox product is a bit expensive and the USB adapters are a bit to slow for games and such.  So, again, the answer is "yes", but with limitations

    I retract my previous "No." If you can live with limited performance (slow refresh/choppy action video/no gaming) on the second external monitor, you could use a USB video adapter and a DVI-HDMI adapter to connect it to a USB port on your computer.

    Just a note about the system information that appears below your post: iOS 4.3.3 does not run on Macs, only on iPods, iPads and iPhones. When you're posting about your MBP, it would be more useful to those responding to know which version of Mac OS X you're running. Doesn't matter for purposes of this post, but something to remember for future posts.

    I'm not quite sure what you mean by this - do you mena connect to the Mac to access streaming media or perhaps you were wondering if the AppleTV can behave as a wireless extender to give network access to the PS3 - it can't.
