Can't connect HP 5500n printer via ethernet

I've a Snow Airport and an ethernet cabled HP5500n printer. However, I can't get the printer to be seen either through the base station or plugged directly into the Mac's ethernet port.
I've printed a configuration page. However, there is no IP address stated so I can't even try that.
This is an old printer that used to be linked into the network at work, which used a different kind of router.
Any ideas?
Thanks

1. Make sure that the Ethernet cable connections are secure and that the cable from the printer is plugged into the Snow's LAN port, not its WAN port.
2. Make sure that the Snow is configured to distribute IP addresses, in the Network tab of AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow. (If the Snow had been acting as a bridge instead of distributing IP addresses, and if your computer had been connecting to the Internet using PPPoE, you'll need to set up the Snow, instead of the computer, to connect using PPPoE. To do so, add the PPPoE settings such as username and password in the Internet tab of AirPort Admin Utility, and disable PPPoE in the computer's Network system preferences.)
3. Make sure that the latest version of the printer driver is installed on the computer. On HP's Web site , there is a driver for Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.5 dated 28 Jan 2008.
4. In the Print dialog window, after you choose "Add Printer", if the printer doesn't show up after a little while, click on "More Printers..." and then select "HP IP Printing" in the top menu. Hopefully, the printer will show up in the "Auto" tab after a few seconds.

  • Mini can't connect to the internet via ethernet bridge

I installed a Netgear WGPS606 (It's a print server and wireless ethernet bridge) on my home wireless network. Here's the Configuration: DSL connected through a Linksys BEFSR41 DSL/Cable router with 4 port switch. My Graphite Airport base station connects to one of the ports on the switch, and it serves the wireless computers on the network. The WGPS606 is connected wirelessly to the Airport Base station. I have a MacMini connected to one of the ethernet ports on the WGPS606. The Mini successfully gets its IP address from the DHCP server on the Airport. (Interestingly, the Airport's DHCP server is configured to provide addresses for airport clients, not ethernet clients, but it does provide an IP address for the Mini -- I assume because the mini is connected through the wireless bridge.) I can see and connect to the Mini via the local network, but the Mac Mini cannot connect to the internet.
    Any clues?

Never mind. I gave up on the Netgear print server and bought a second AirPort Express and set up a WDS network. Everything works like a charm. That's the last time I waste nearly a day of my time to save $30 bucks on a piece of hardware.

  • Can't connect to share files via ethernet

I think I followed all the instructions, but I'm not able to connect two G4s running OS X (one is Panther, the other Tiger, if that makes any difference)
I need file sharing for my work, as transferring via an external drive takes too long.
I go to the Go menu and click on Connect to Server and then enter the Computer Name in the field. I then get a box prompting me to enter my password. Every time I try, it says invalid or log in failed. I know the passwords, and I can view it in the keychain access in Utilites. I'm administrator for both computers.
I am afraid of messing around with settings beyond allowing AppleTalk and permitting File Sharing in System Preferences. One of the computers has Airport, the other hasn't (it makes no difference if turned on or off) The pane listing the either computer's name is the one I select - but there's also some sort of afp// listing on one, and something saying other computers on your local subnet(?) can reach your computer at afp - keith (etc). I also seem to see options for more configuration, such as numeric addresses. Server Name? IP address? -It's Greek to me. I'm confused!
Please, Please Please ! I REALLY NEED THE SIMPLEST POSSIBLE EXPLANATION. I've reached the limits of my capability to figure it out via either the Mac Help, or Support on the Apple website k base articles. I remember this working once - not with these two computers, but it did work - so I imagine something needs resetting or....???
    Many, many thanks for help.
wish I could award you 2 or three stars - or a constellation, for gods sake

    Great news Keith, thanks!
Yes, you came up with the right solution, but how on earth??
It might not seem intuitive at first glance, but what you're trying to do is gain access on the other Mac... Who has access to the other Mac? The other Mac's user!
Also, it wouldn't do to have it so just anybody that doesn't have an account be able to access the files on it.
Isn't it an assumption that you would use the password for the one you were on, rather than the one you are trying to access?
If the other Mac A had an account on it for both Mac A's user & Mac B's user, then both/either could log in, or you could log in as a Guest, but then only have limited access to the Shared folder.
I also thought the problem might have been needing an Ethernet crossover cable as opposed to an Ethernet cable used for a DSL connection - apparently there's a difference, and some earlier Macs don't support the latter.
Only one Mac needs to be new enough to not require a Crossover cable, it'll automatically switch a regular Cable to as though it were Crossover.

  • Connecting Canon LBP9100cdn Laser printer via ethernet/wifi hub

I have connected my Canon LBP9100cdn Laser printer via ethernet through a modem hub. We can connect either through direct ethernet hard connection or wifi, on OS10.8.3. Occasionally it just stops finding the printer. Have latest CUPS driver, have reset printing system and reinstalled driver and reinstalled printer. Turned printer off and on. Sometimes it takes a few goes to get the right random sequence, but this time I just can't get it to connect. Other computers on the system, both ethernet hard wired and wifi can still connect- all on the same operating system.

When you get this lost connection, try opening Safari (or web browser of choice) and enter the IP address of the 9100 as the URL. This should connect to the internal web page of the printer. If this does connect, then see if you can resume the queue to print again. In theory, if the print queue on the Mac pauses, then the web browser test should also fail to connect to the printer.

  • I have a 3rd party hard drive with movies on it ,it is connected to my airport extreme. The AE is connected to my tv via ethernet cable. Can I stream my movies to the Tv ?

I have a 3rd party hard drive with movies on it ,it is connected to my airport extreme. The AE is connected to my tv via ethernet cable. Can I stream my movies to the Tv ?

    Not without a player..
The AE is a dumb file server.. the hard disk you plug in is an even dumber hard disk.
There are no smarts in this setup.. not even DLNA. So the TV would have to be an extremely smart one to read raw files on a network drive.. none do that I know of.
A solution is WD live TV.. it can read files from just about any file source on network and play them to the TV.
Nothing apple makes will do that.. ATV is a streamer not a media player. Everything in the Apple world is tied up with itunes. So you must have a computer running itunes to use it.
You can download a more generic player for ipad, and put that as part of the network.. but you still need ATV to display the video.

  • Can't connect computers to printer (b210) via network because there are "other networks"

I can't connect computers to printer (b210) via network because there are "other networks matching your network name".  This makes no sense at all. I have several Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, iMac) all with the latest software. The printer works fine when using the USB connection to my iMac. Nothing I do seems to solve this problem (rebooting, re-configuring, etc.). Help.

    Hi Cgold,
If there are other networks matching your network name, then the printer will have issues connecting when you run the wireless setup wizard.
    However, there are other options:
If your router supports 'Wi-Fi Protected Setup' with either a button to push on the router, or a pin to enter, you can choose that connection option under the wireless menu on your printer.
    or
Change the network name that your router is broadcasting within the web page of your router (NOTE-this would force you to re-join all wireless devices back to the new network name you have created).
If I have solved your issue, please feel free to provide kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided!

    any other suggestions?
Do the same thing your doing to get each computer on the Internet, one takes turns connecting the cable.
If you want both computers on the Internet and printing at the same time, that's what a router is for.
Just sub one of the PC's above for a printer and you see the idea how it all works.
A Airport Express is Mac friendly method, but if you have computers that have no wireless capability then you will need a Airport Extreme for the Ethernet outports.
You can also buy a third party router from the PC store, that works too, but it's a bit more complicated and you have to install your own firmware updates manually, no Airport Utility to do it for you. But you save money.
The important thing is setting up the router securely, WPA and WEP are both cracked. New Mac's don't even support WEP encrypted because it's worthless and false security.
    What you want is:
WPA(AES) Personal with two passwords, each 20+ random letter, number, symbol characters in length. One password is used for Internet access only the other for Admin router access only, this way a user can't crack the router.
Turn off remote access, don't use hidden network or MAC Address filtering, no defense.
The long passwords are needed to defeat brute force attacks using video card based software, this type of password will take thousands of years to crack.
You can learn more about wireless networking online, have a local PC/Mac guy set you up.
Your computers are much more secure behind a router than directly connected to Internet as the router is a dumb switch, like a large security guard, only allowing certain things to pass and beating down others who try.
Also you don't wear out your Ethernet port like what your doing now connecting the cable all the time.
    Good Luck

  • Sharing printer via ethernet

I have an imac G5 and a dual usb ibook connected via ethernet, with an hp officejet 6210 AiO printer connected to the imac via usb. I'm sharing the printer with the ibook.
The way I was able to find the printer from the ibook was by selecting IP printers and then selecting "imac.local" under the "Printer Name." For "location," the Printer Info window shows "unknown." This seemed strange to me, but I had not been able to get it to work before, so I tried it. I can print with no problem, but I can't control the quality. It seems to print "Standard," based on comparing a document printed from my ibook with one printed from my imac with standard quality.
Is there another way to share a printer via ethernet or a way to control the print quality using the my method?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

Do you have the appropriate printer drivers installed on the iBook?

  • Issue with 2wire dsl router when connecting power pc g4 via ethernet

Issue with 2wire dsl router when connecting power pc g4 via ethernet. The 2wire will keep resetting. When I connect my macbook pro via ethernet to the 2wire all is ok, but as soon as i connect the power pc. . . .reset. I have emailed 2wire support. They recommended using a different patch cable. Tried that.. .. anyone else having this issue???? Any help would be appreciated. . .

Search the discussions for issues with 2wire dsl routers. This has come up before in a discussion I've been involved with, but probably not to do with the MDD. I do remember it being a design issue with the router, something that was done to it before dispatch.
Let us know if you can't find it and we'll have a look.
If you afford it, bin the 2wire and go buy something decent like a Netgear.

  • TS1398 I have an iPad mini, because of my work network firewalls I am not able to use the airprint function to print. I was told you can direct connect to a printer. I am not sure how as I have not seen any cables for a lightning connection to a printer c

I have an iPad mini, I am connected to my work wireless connection. My printer also is on the same wireless network, however I am not able to print to my airprint enabled printer through this wireless connection. Is there a way to direct connect to the printer via a cable ?
I am missing something here on the connection. I am thinking possibly a firewall here at work will not allow me to use the airprint function. Help ?

There is no support for wired printing.
It is probably a firewall issue, possibly where all inbound communications are blocked. Since you're at work, I'd call your work IT department and find out from them what you can/can't do.

  • Macbook Pro suddenly will not connect to the internet via ethernet cable.

I know this is a long shot... but I figured I would give it a try.
My macbook pro suddenly does not connect to the internet via ethernet cable. Please bear with me, as I am not very tech-savvy - I will try my best to describe the symptoms!
I connect to the internet via ethernet (we don't have wifi). It was working before I went to work, and when I came home I suddenly couldn't get anything to work (I know everyone says this, but I truly didn't mess with anything). Internet browsers just think for awhile and then turn up the 'You are not connected to the internet' error.
I went into my network preferences and curiously, the 'Ethernet' shows a green dot and says 'connected'. However it says 'Authentication server is not responding' underneath the last part that says '802.1X: WPA: eduroam' (I think that is my user profile).
When I go into my 'security' settings I can see that my firewall is off, so that shouldn't be causing any problems.
I've tried restarting the router and computer itself many times. Diagnostics just gets to a certain point and reports back 'Network Diagnostics cannot fix the current networking problems.' I've also tried switching to a different ethernet cable, and I tried both cables out on a PC laptop and it connected without issue.  Additionally, I brought my macbook along to a friend's house and it connected to his wifi just fine, so the problem appears to just be with ethernet connections.
I know it's hard to troubleshoot this kind of thing without being there and having a look at the computer yourself, but any tips wouild be greatly appreciated.

As I mentioned above, I am not very tech savvy so I have no idea why a wireless protocol would be showing up there, I'm just listing everything I see in hopes that someone might know something I can try. This is why I am asking for help here - I'm not sure what has happened that has made me unable to connect, especially since it seemingly occured while nobody was using the computer.
I guess I should clarify that I'm not a total hillbilly- normally my firewall is set to 'on', but I set it to 'off' to try and troubleshoot the issues here as I was told that sometimes it can interfere with the computer's ability to connect to the internet. If this is not the case and firewall does not affect anything, I will turn it back on while I try to fix this.
I have tried the method you mentioned above a few times - I actually contacted my ISP earlier this week and they recommended resetting the router like that. They didn't mention any known network issues.

  • Connected to the internet via ethernet, BUT...

I turned off my computer, modem, everything and uplugged it all because of a severe lightning storm Saturday. Since I turned it back on the next day I haven't been able to access the web or my mail. However, the problem must be with my G4, because I have an iBook on Airport and I'm able to connect to the web and email with it. So the cable modem and Airport are evidently working properly. My G4 network settings all appear normal. I've got a green light saying I am connected to the internet via ethernet, but I'm really not. My email won't go online and no browser works, although I don't get a "can't connect" message on the browser screen, it just stays white. I had this problem before but I can't remember what I did to correct it. I just remember unplugging the modem and Airport over and over, in different order, and resetting preferences. But I don't remember what I did, if anything, to actually make it work again. Does anyone have an idea on what I can try to REALLY connect?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Frustrated in Florida,
    EG

Tough to troubleshoot lightning in person, moreso at a distance!
    Things to try...
Type 17.112.152.32 into your browser... thinking it may be off looking for a DNS server that doesn't exist.
Launch Network Utility and see if you can Ping like that addy, or your other computer.
Results may help us get further.

  • PowerMac G4 will not connect to the internet via ethernet

I am normally a very mac savy person, but I cannot get this to work...
I have an Airport Express connected to speakers, a USB printer and an ethernet hub, which is connected to a cable modem and also a PowerMac G4 via ethernet. There is also a wireless iMac thrown into the mix. All hardware has up-to-date software.
The wireless iMac gets online, prints and plays music wirelessly.
The wired PowerMac G4 will not connect to the internet via ethernet, it is killing me.

  • Connecting to Time Capsule via Ethernet

    Hi,
I'm working on a Tiger OS and I cannot connect to my time capsule. I followed instructions in the manual, but I simply do not see Time Capsule on my desktop, and there is very little info in the manual.
I am working off of ethernet, not airport, and would prefer to used ethernet for the moment. I have it connected via LAN port to my macbook pro. There's only one ethernet port on my computer. Does anyone have any advice? I know about about Macs, but dont have much experience with network specs.
I simply need to archive data, but I cannot see Time Capsule on my desktop. Time Capsule is connected just fine to my modem, but now how do I connect to my computer? I've tried to unplug ethernet from my computer, and into the LAN port on my capsule, but to no avail.
I am absolutely clueless as to how I can use this machine at this point??
    Thanks much.

    Jean,
You probably don't have the Network Preferences set correctly.
Connecting The Time Capsule Via Ethernet
Connect one end of a Cat-5 Ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports of the TC (<•••>).
Connect the other end to your Macs ethernet port.
    Open Network Preferences.
At the top change "Location:" to "Ethernet Connection".
In the list on the left "Ethernet" should be at the top of the list. (If not use the Action Menu (gear button) at the bottom to "Set Service Order".)
Click "Apply" in the lower right.
Give it a moment to acquire an IP address from the TC.
    You should now be connected.
    Now begin your initial backup.
Now that you are reconnected to the TC, you should still have internet access during the backup.
Let us know if this was helpful. Next time start a new thread, you're more likely to get helpful responses that way.
    Cheers!
