Can't connect Sony DCR-TRV38 to iMac

This is an older Mini DV camcorder that I am trying to connect by USB. iMovie doesn't recognize it at all. I don't have a firewire and don't know whether a standard one (from Best Buy eg) would work on this camera - i.e., is the connector the same? Can't find much about this specific model on the web. Any advice? I'd really like to transfer my old home movies onto iMovie for editing now that I have the time. Any and all advice is most welcome. Thank you.

You need a firewire cable. If your iMac has Firewire 800, get a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable. If your iMac has Firewire 400, get a 4 pin to 6 pin firewire cable. Your camera must be plugged into a wall outlet (not on batteries.)

  • Connecting Sony DCR-TRV330E (Digital8) to iMac

    Hi,
I wanted to capture some old video I shot years ago on my Sony DCR-TRV330E (Digital8) camera. I originally used this on a PC with the supplied FireWire card and all was well.
I needed to buy a new Firewire 800 cable (which I did today) to try this out on my iMac. However, although the system sees the memory stick when I connect via USB, it refuses to acknowledge the camera. I am in VCR mode and I am certain I bought the correct cable (a Belkin FireWire 800/400 9-Pin to 4-Pin) but you never know ...
Has anyone got any suggestions about whether I have got it wrong or where I could go right?
    Thanks in advance.
    D

What application are you using for capture? Since Digital8 doesn't have regular timecode, in FCP, you'd need to set Device Control to "Non-Controllable Device." In FCE, you'd use the DV Converter setting. I don't know what you'd use in iMovie or other capture or editing applications.

  • Can't connect to volume of shared iMac but used to be able to

I'm really hoping someone can help me with this as I've been struggling with it since my upgrade from Tiger to Leopard. I run OS X 10.5.2 (all updated, etc.) on two machines - an Intel Macbook and iMac, with an airport extreme base station (updated) as the router. Both are using the same account names, but have different computer names (B's Macbook, B's iMac, etc.). So, attached to the iMac is an external hard drive connected via FW800, split into two volumes (Time Machine, Video Library). When I first tried to share these after the upgrade to 10.5.0 I had various permission errors with that "Unknown" user account. That seems to have been all cleared up, and in fact the two aforementioned volumes (Time Machine, Video Library) are now completely new and on a new FW drive. Problem is, I can't connect to the "Video Library" from the Macbook, even though sharing is allowed and I can connect to the the "Time Machine" volume fine. It shows up in the finder sidebar, under the Macbook, but when I try to connect I get this..
the operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Video Library" cannot be found
When I view the iMac via the Samba share listed in the finder (since Windows Sharing is turned on via the iMac - and I tried turning this off, doesn't change anything) I see 8 volumes labeled video library, video library-1, video library-2, etc. all the way through video library-7. Now, I click on these and get the same error. But I am 99% sure that Leopard is confused and can't find the correct link to the Video Library because all of these dead links are still floating around somewhere, but I don't know how to clear it out and reset. In fact, I used to have the same problem sharing the Time Machine volume, but during one replacement of the hard drive, I changed the volume name from "Time Machine Drive" to just "Time Machine" and it of course started working fine, I can access the drive without problems, etc.
So, after all of that explaining, it really comes down to the fact that something seems to be stuck in Leopard thinking that the link to the "Video Library" volume is broken or invalid, Smaba sees it as 8 volumes (btw all other shared volumes have only one entry in the Samba view), and everything is confused. The working solution would be to rename the Video Library volume, and connect. Problem is I have over 1,000 movies/tv shows/etc. in iTunes on that drive and if I change the volume name all those links will get screwed up. Any other ideas? I've spotlight searched for video library-# to look for a preference file somewhere that is trying to remember the link, but to no effect. I am sure it has to do with the growing pains associated with the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard and the user IDs, etc. Repair permissions won't work since it's an external drive. Any thoughts?
    Thanks so much in advance.

Try unmounting the volume on your iMac using Disk Utility. Then mount it again. You may need to reboot the laptop or relaunch its Finder process (using the Force Quit window) after remounting the drive on your iMac. Remember that no process may be accessing any files on the drive you plan to unmount, or the unmount will fail. Unmounting and remounting an external drive on my iMac made it become visible on my MacBook Pro after it had disappeared.

  • Can't connect Sony TRV900

For several years I have often used my Sony TRV900 miniDV camera to capture video onto my hard drive using FCP. Occasionally FCP would not recognize the device, but I was always able to resolve the problem. Now, however, I am completely unable to get the camera recognized by FCP, iMovie or even the System Profiler. The specs:
    Sony DCR-TRV900 miniDV camera
    PowerMacG4 1GB dual processor
    OS 10.4.11
    FCP 4.5
    Firewire 400
I tried all of the following without any success:
    Replacing the firewire cable
Moving the camera closer to the computer
Removing external hard drive from second firewire port
    Switching firewire port
    Trashing all FCP preferences
Deleting all Quicktime receipts with model number and reinstalling Quicktime 7.6
Changing the order in which I turn on computer and camera and launch software
    Looking for a four-leaf clover
    Rubbing a rabbits foot
    Kicking a door
    Any new advice appreciated.

    Hi
Having a TRV-900E - I ended up in same situation - Let's hope You has not.
I connected the 6-pin end 180 deg wrong to the back of my Mac-Pro.
    Result.
    Burned A/D chip in Camera.
after - Camera could be maneuvered from Mac but no Import or Export.
    Camera recorded on tape OK
Camera Play-backed to TV (analog) OK
    Medicine - RepairShop - Expencive.
Test Your Camera on another Mac
    Test FW-Cable with other Camera
    Test other FW-Cable
    *Else read my unsorted thoughts.*
MOST COMMON ORIGIN => Test another FW-Cable.
Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
Toogle in iMovie pref: Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape:
Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Exchange formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    Using WHAT ? :
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ?
    HOW MUCH ?
    (Others don't count)
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into
    this and have a re-try.
    from LKN 1935:
Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

  • Can you connect a pc to an iMac (to move iTunes library)?

Since nobody answered my detailed request (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5225308?tstart=60) maybe someone will be able to answer the key question.
Can you connect a laptop (with an external hard disc attached already) to an iMac, and iMac recognizing both as "hard discs" so that I can move my iTunes library from the external harddisc to the iMac?

    YesEtc wrote:
...I need find a way to have the mac see the drive while iTunes is opened with the "X" drive attached and recognized...
Not on a Mac you don't. OS X doesn't use drive letters and doesn't require them.
On the PC, go to the iTunes folder (I don't know where it is stored in Windows) and copy all the .itl and .itdb files to the iTunes folder on the external HDD. Connect the external to your Mac. Launch iTunes while holding down the Option key. In the dialog select "choose library" and navigate to the iTunes folder on the external. Select and click OK. This will set up iTunes on the new Mac just like it was on the PC. You'll need to have the external HDD connected and mounted before you launch iTunes so you can listen to the music.

  • Can´t connect sony camera to final cut pro

    Hi.
I have a Sony Full HD camera model HDR - HC7 (PAL). I´ve been trying to connect it to final cut pro HD but it doesn´t recognize the camera. Already tried a new cable, already connected and disconected, but still the same
Is there anything I can do?
I appreciate your suggestions and answers.

run the system profiler and make sure the computer is seeing the camera.
I don't know the camera, but is it possible that it needs to be in some sort of vcr mode or perhaps needs a menu setting adjusted.

  • I still can't connect to wifi on my iMac 10.9.4!

I Honestly don't even know what to do know. I haven't been able to connect for a while. After I got the 10.9.4 update it would work for maybe a couple hours but know it just won't work and I don't know what else to do because I have tried everything that people say will "fix" this issues. I'm on an late 2011 iMac running Mavericks 10.9.4. Please someone give me an answer!

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
If possible, connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?
